No, it increases the risk period. Good evening from austin texas. It has been a remarkable news day today. Something truly rare happened. We got a work at the inner workings of a premeditated ends justify the means lie. It involves candidate barack obama knowing and willfully misleading the public. No one died, its not a case of corruption, its politics at its most elemental and it comes thanks to David Axelrod. Obama misled nation when he opposed gay marriage in 2008. Many suspected at the time that candidate obama was just pretending to oppose full Marriage Equality because not enough of the country supported it. But the evolution of these politics are convoluted and fascinating. Wear in mind that president obama did not voice support for same sex marriage until 2012, 16 years later. What happened in between, a political calculation . Carfully articulated campaign position, lying. Even u. S. Senate candidate barack obama, circa 2004 sounded different from the 1994 state Senate Candidate that filled out that questionnaire. I have been clear. I am not a supporter of gay marriage. I think that the term marriage itself has strong religious roots and a strong tradition that means Something Special to people in this country. What i believe is that marriage is between a man and a woman. I believe that a marriage is between a man and a woman. Obama won that senate race, and in the new book believer my 40 years in politics. He says that barack obama did and it appears that candidate balm was good enough. Opposition to gay marriage was particularly strong in the black church, and has he ran for higher office, he grudgingly accepted the course for more pragmatic folks like me. Here is candidate with rick warren. I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. For me as a christian for me, for me as a christian, it is also a sacred union. God is in the mix. Youll note the applause that line received. In other debates an campaign stops, candidate obama spoke of civil unions. It would be equivalent of making sure that all of the rights conferred by the fate or requality for same sex couples as well as for heterosexual cull ps. For gay marriage, i do not support gay marriage, but a support a strong version of civil unions where i think the state has to recognize the same rights and responsibilities for gay people and samesex couples as they do for anyone else. Obama was elected president , and then game to this evolution in 2012, just sixth months for the election. I have to tell you as i said i have been going through an evolution on this issue. As a certain point i just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that i think samesex couples should be able to get married. With a hat tip to Vice President joe biden who obama said got out over his skis because biden voiced his support for gay marriage before president obama did. And in the president s state of the Union Address and by that time samesex marriage was legal in 36 states. I have seen gay marriage go from a wedge issue, to drive us apart, to a story of freedom, now legal in states that seven in ten americans call home. Whether obamas choice was political that advanced the cause of gay rights is up to question. Joining me now is dan savage. The man from the stranger. I think we have had conversations about this before, what is your reaction to this news . We news this all along. We joked i wrote at the time when the president was opposed to Marriage Equality in the campaign, and in his first term, that he would pretend to oppose Marriage Equality and we would pretend to believe him. We would hold his feet to the fire. Franklin roosevelt sort of did the same thing. It was political theater and effective. No one in the lbgt Civil Rights Movement believed him when he went from being pro Marriage Equality in 1996 to for it again. Thats not the way that people involve on this issue. They evolve from opposition to support. I never heard of a case, except for the president , when we are supposed to buy someone devolving and revolving. I agree that the country was not ready in 2008 for a candidate who supported Marriage Equality. The president made his discomfort with the political calculation he made part of the drama and the performance of his office. It benefitted people in this country tremendously. I basically agree, but sort of strategically. Let me give you this thought experiment. Say there is a young, conservative libertarian coming up in the Ron Paul Movement saying i dont think we should get rid of the minimum wage. He gets office, says of course i believe in the minimum wage, and then working with libertarian activists to get rid of the minimum wage, and then someone says of course he want today get rid of it the whole time. I would be angry. Fundamentally people had been had. I think would be mad if he succeeded and i dont think you could. The minimum wage is hugely popular and people have a personal stake in wages in a way that people begin to understand that it did not affect them even if they opposed same sex marriage for other reasons, a gay couple down the street marrying had no impact on their lives. If we did away with the minimum wage or had a real debate, people would be in terror of being exploited. No one is exploited or used in samesex marriage. Can you imagine yourself in that room or being the person, barack obama, going out and looking pastor rick warren in the lines saying it is between and man in a woman when in your heart of hearts thinks that is a morally odious view . That would be very difficult. Sometimes he said things that upset us, like good is in the mix. That toss you have. So what is in the mix when a samesex couple marries . Satan . Do you think ultimately, and i wonder about the story David Axelrod chose to include this in the book, and this ultimately closes a loop, right . It brings the trajectory full stop, and in the judgment of history, how does this factor into how, from a civil rights perspective, Barack Obamas presidency is judged . Im not sure how that factors in. But i think we cant be so naive to think that politicians are 100 straight with us all of the time and we dont want them to be 100 straight all of the time. It is not getting out in front of the country, not getting out over the skis to use the president s expression is part of the performance of politics and its not a violation i think of the pack between politician and public if is part of what politics and moving Public Opinion is all about. And the president , like i said, and i said for a long time since he came out in support, before his reelection campaign, he brought the country along. He helped create this change that made it possible for him to be open about his position all along, really. And i guarantee i believe in my heart that axelrod ran that by the president before he published it. Thats probably right, thank you so much. Joining me now is the Senior Editor at the new yorker. Author of obamaos. How does this work from a legacy perspective. It seems like this sews it up neatly. This are the kinds of decisions you make to become president , and the proof is in the putting and that we will probably see Marriage Equality in all 50 states before this presidency is over. I president obama saw a parallel here in the Civil Rights Movement. And the armed forces by president truman. And i think that obama thought that it would have been a mistake for the Civil Rights Movement to start with things that had to do with intimate relations and marriage. Dont start with those laws. Start with the military. And then public accommodations and voting. And ease it along in that way. I think that was his strategy. It is regrettable that he had to dissemble. That he had to disguise his real position. I dont think there is any question. It was a case of ends justifying means. Whether you think he would have been better off and gays would have been better off and we all would have better off if he expressed his true opinion in the 2008 campaign, and thereby possibly lost the presidency and yielded it to a republican, whose position was to amend the constitution in order to prevent gay marriage i think that strategy was brilliant and justified in the end. Justified. How often do you think, i had conversations with politicians off of the record and they will say things off of the record they cant say in public. I wonder how much of a politicians life at all levels, particularly the higher levels, is this divided conscious between what you believe and what you can say . I think that is true. That is certainly true in politics and true in a lot of areas of life. You have to take it you have to take things a step at a time. You have to be cognizant of reality and of what the real bars are to progress, and how to get around them and get over them. That is a fact of political life. I think has dan said, it doesnt really break the bond of trust fully between the public and politicians. You know i think, for example, of bill clintons support of Capital Punishment. It is not quite a parallel, his goal in seeing he was for Capital Punishment was not to abolish Capital Punishment where as obamas goal was to essentially pave the way to gay marriage. Does anyone believe, i certainly dont believe in his heart of heart that bill clinton favors Capital Punishment. I think he made that sacrifice to his own integrity for a higher cause. And i think that is essentially what obama did. Do moe, the lesson here, which is a very important one every time we have elections is that youre elected more than a person, youre electing a coalition of folks. The interests that determine the agenda of the people you put in power. In this case, people elected the coalition that was on the side of gay rights and what they got was gay rights. Jon stewart is leaving the daily show. Hpaste . Lets see. The paste didnt seem to do much for me. The whitestrips made a huge difference. Thats not fair crest whitestrips work below the enamel surface to whiten 25 times better than the leading whitening toothpaste. Crest whitestrips. The way to whiten nbc news today decided to suspend Brian Williams for six months without pay. The suspension is Effective Immediately and lester holt will continue to anchor the nightly news. We believe it is the appropriate action. Back with more in a moment. Weather reporters bearing witness to a storms pour has become a cliche. They have once again upped their game. I give you anchor in a car. Good evening from the snowbound and eerily quite streets of new york. Were out and about in new york where very few others are. Hey, guys, you know google street view, right . That would be a good show, dont you think . In nearly two years we have been on the air, lots of clips have appeared on the daily show jon stewart. Usually they were to make a story or tell a point never until to mock us for doing something foolish. And that is the thing with jon stewart and the daily show dont slip or he will make you pay. He announced during a taping today that he will be leaving the daily show which he has hosted since 1999. It was an essential source of media and political criticism and keeping things very funny. His first trickle down from social media was confirmed by Comedy Central says his comedic stewart plans to leave the daily show later this year, they have not announced the exact date. Joining me now is david carr. A pretty big day on the media beat today. I would say, you dont know which way to look, chris. This bit of news is pretty it is kind of sad, isnt it . About stewarts exit . Yeah, it is. Yeah, you lose a little hole in all of this, lets face it. He created a whole runway of comedy that now were seeing more and more of with, you know, of course steven colbert, jan oliver, larry wilmore. But he is the originator and reigning champion and going out on top, i would say. The thing about the daily show that always struck me, and has struck me more the more that i have come to host a nightly news show, is that it was in some ways the way that the barrage of particularly cable news, and coverage of things was digested, distilled, and sent up. It was a critique of the media, but also had substantive points to make. Caller most definitely, and i teach at Boston University once a week, and when you talk to those kids, they dont call it fake news, they call it the news. Its a digest of the news, it teaches them things about what is going on in the world and it filled a whole in their diet. Do you think he is replaceable . Can you imagine a daily show with a new host or do they can have to go with Something Else . Caller it is straight up satire. I certainly wouldnt want to wander into those giant footprints. And you know in the instance of colbert, which is a little more sin you have to admit that jon stewart wore the uniform better than most. Enough so that it is a little hard to imagine what he will do next. You know he did a great job with rosewater, the film he directed, but in terms of a straight up talk show, he never excelled at interviewing all that much. If youre thinking about well, hes going to do straight up comedy somewhere i dont know, he is a satire guy, right . My sense from watching him during the presser of rose water is that was a passion project and i think he loved doing it. And my sense, i have no access into his thinking, is he probably just want today do different stuff. Youre extremely accomplished and wealthy. You could make independent art house films, and i respect someone willing to walk away from Something Like this to under take other endeavors, dont you . Yes, and with the timing of it, and if you were a close student of the show, i think every once in awhile the fact that he was a little tired was becoming more and more manifest. One of the things that i think well miss though, chris, is only Lauren Michaels was able to find and promote talent. You have steve carell, steven colbert, jon oliver, olivia munn, ed healms. Jessica williams now who is absolutely incredible. Yes, it just i do wonder about where that sort of apparatus that will make that comedic talent, some of them have blossomed into huge deals. David, do you have any response, i think im too conflicted for a million reasons to comment on the Brian Williams situation, but im curious what is your news since it is kind of a bomb shell we just dropped. I dont think it is much of a bomb shell. I think that your feeling is not going to be an uncommon one which is one that bears significant sadness. I dont think anybody is going to wish Brian Williams ill. They dont think he is a jerk or perpetrator. He is a guy who made a mistake. And i think it was very good of nbc to step up, take discuss i can of this narrative, and come up with the suspension that is very, very deep. Very, very serious. And see everyone every can see where they are from there. And it is really a good outcome of a terrible situation. And it is obviously there is no perfect way out of this. But you knew whatever is going to happen would have a profound effect on his career and sort of what goes on with the nightly news. I think when i spoke to the people at nbc about it, i kept trying to bring up business, and what they said is we want to know if he can cover a hurricane, combat, or call a politician on a lie. That is what we care about, and that is what they will find out over the course of time. I thought it was a good move. David carr of new york times, thank you. A pleasure to be with you, chris. If you just hit refresh on the googles news page, you would find no shortage of terrifying headlines like this, this, and this. The latest developments in the Measles Outbreak ahead. A new York City Police officer has been indicted in the shooting death of a young man. Over the last 12 months, the deaths of young unarmed africanamerican men at the hands of police have dominated headlines and sparked a nationwide protest. We know their names, michael brown, eric garner. They are just a few. Their cases all ended the same but, no indictments and no punishments. They say a wrong was committed when they pulled a trigger and took the life of a person. It came after taking the life of this man. Two rookie nypd officers entered the same dark stairwell as him. Investigators say liang was holding his gun in the same hand he used to open the door and the gun went off. The officer has been indicted. As you know an indict is not a determination of guilty or innocence. Just a admission there is enough evidence to go to trial. In just over a month, 121 people from 17 states in washington dc have been diagnosed with the measles. It does not bode well as were coming off the biggest outbreak. It is part of a big multistate outbreak that seems to have started in disneyland. The cluster of cases that is most scarey is in illinois, eight of nine people are babies under the age of one. The last is an adult. So far the illinois cluster has not been connected to the disneyland outbreak. Meanwhile today in washington, senators from both parties talked about waying to prevent further outbreaks. Dr. Mark seauier was quick to point out that things are getting worse, not better. Were all crossing our fingers here that maybe were near the end, but the case number went up by 20 just this last week, so im not sure were dont with this yet. Not surprisingly Health Officials say most of the people infected were not vaccinated. That is a problem considering that some parents are purposely not vaccinating their children. Eli, my 10 month old son has received all of his vaccines on schedule, but is not old enough for mmr. And my daughter who is fully vulnerable because of her cancer. This herd immunity is the only thing protecting my two Young Children from being exposed to measles or whatever the next outbreak is. Now we have a best selling author atul gawande. I have seen you talk and write about the change between the doctor and patient relationship with two things. The rise of the internet and the declining trust that people have in the medical profession. How much of that is driving what were seeing here in terms of vaccinations . I think those are significant. You add to it that these are diseases we dont seem to remember which is ironic. These conditions, people will say measles, is it really that dangerous . And we forget that childhood viral illnesses were major killers not that long ago. And in my own childhood, i developed mumps which has since been something that we have controlled with vaccinations. And i was one of those kids, because there was thousands with mumps, i developed the most severe form, and i was just lucky i survived. You can die from the disease. What we have now, which is the real surprise is a generation who has had this kind of dire illness and range of illnesses that shorten lives eliminated from our memory. And that same generation that benefitted from it is the one that doubts giving it to the next generation. So, i guess the question here is, and this pertains to the new book you have out about end of life care and how we make these difficult decisions in concert with medical professionals and family about end of life care, and the vaccinations. Which is how do you go about rebuilding a trust so you can have conversations or reconstituting medical authority at an age where it seems to be on the decline . I think this is where story telling is incredibly important because we dont remember the stories of what happened to people when there was a time when Infectious Disease was the most dire thing that families worried about. Now it is injuries. And were rightly concerned about accidents, guns, and other concerns like that. Abroad you see the stories and you begin to understand what happens, and it is similar at the end of life. We havent really brought the stories of what the experience is of dieing in a hospital, dieing in intensive care, and making it clear that is a kind of suffering that doesnt extend peoples lives, it often shortens peoples lives when we dont have that kind of approach. So i think were beginning to understand that we need to bring the stories and be able to make them public. A pleasure, thank you. Thank you. A growing number of democrats are refusing to attend the address to Congress Last month. Plus, after the death of kayla mueller, president obama talks about the refusal to pay ransoms. The family of kayla muler, the american aide worker has been been confirmed that she was quilled. Some of her family and friends paid tribute to her this afternoon in a press conference. The family of kayla muler, the american aide worker has been been confirmed that she was killed. Some of her family and friends paid tribute to her this afternoon in a press conference. She was a free spirit standing up for those suffering and wanting to be their vote. Im not sure how to live in a World Without kayla, but i do know that were all living in a better world because of her. Muellers family also released a copy of a letter. It include as passage that i read earlier. Today president obama defended his policy of not paying ransom for hostages. My Immediate Reaction is heartbreak. I have been in touch with kaylas family. She was a Outstanding Young woman and had a great spirit. And i think that spirit will live on. The one thing that we have held to is a policy of not paying ransoms for an organization like isil. The reason is once we start doing that, not only are we financing their slaughter of innocent people, and strengthing their organization, but were making americans greater targets. It is as tough as anything that i do, having conversations with parents who, understandably, want, by any means necessary for their children to be safe. A senior u. S. Official told nbc news the family was emailed a photo appearing to show kayla dead with trauma injuries. Not inconsistent with the kinds of wounds sustained in an air strike. Last friday, isis claimed mueller was killed in an air strike and showing where the air strike occurred. She was captured after leaving a Doctors Without Borders hospital. She worked with an organization giving aide to refugee continuing humanitarian work that took her to many territories. In 2010, a blog post reprinted at the website forkayla. Org, this is really my lifes work, to go where there is suffering. I suppose like us a all, im learning how to deal with the suffering of the world inside myself. In every case of the hostages killed, they were deeply selfless people that put themselves at tremendous risk to serve the people of syria and tell their stories and end the suffering. Those are the people that choose to work in the area of the horrible civil wars. There is at least one other hostage that is held in the region. What i can tell you is that we are aware. We have avoided discussing the individual cases of americans being held hostage, but were aware of other hostages being held in the region. We learned what the official legal u. S. Respond might look like. New details with president obamas question to fight isis is next. Ill never look back, i will just look younger new olay total effects with more vitamins than the leading prestige moisturizer to fight 7 signs of aging. In just 4 weeks, skin looks up to 10 years younger. From the worlds 1. Olay. Your best beautiful six months after the u. S. Started a Bombing Campaign against isis, president obama is authorized to send to congress for a vote. The Senate Democrats and the Broad Strokes of the new umf say they will rule out enduring offensive ground operations, will automatically sunset after three years and will replait the former aumf. The bill would authorize military action against isis and its associated forces, and it would have no geographic limitations leaving the Administration Free to expand to other countries. It is expected to be delivered to august as early as tomorrow. I think it is a good discussion draft. I think it has a good limitation of three years that will place is beyond the president ial election. Give the president a year whether or not he needs a different kind of authorization from congress. Where i think there are improvements that have to be made, is it still have as very broad provision, and there is no sunset of the original aumf, and without that the president could say when the now authorization terminates he or she will rely on the old one. This is a real issue i think will have to be addressed. In fact that is precisely the legal argument made by the white house right now. They are engaged in connectic activity against isis. They say that can do this under the old aumf, so why are we debating this or talking about it at all if they have the legal justification of what theyre doing. I think they realize that is a week constitutional argument. That old authorization theyre relying upon allows a president to use forces who are responsible for 9 11. Well, isil was not even in existence on 9 11, it has been at war with al qaeda, so it plainly, i think by its terms, unless you use the most broad interpretation, but it is all the more reason why it should have the same sunset as any new authorization so the new president cannot fall back on this at a later point when the new resolution expires. That key provision in the 2001 aumf that you proposed sort of rolling into this new one sunsetting, that key phrase is associated forces, right . That gives them the latitude to strike at a variety of targets, some that didnt even exist in 2001. Are you concerned that will provide the same kind of wide latitude to future administrations . I am concerned about it, and this is why it will be the subject of a broad negotiation. And that is if you have a limit that prohibits the use of Ground Troops in a combat mission, and it cannot be interpreted in a overbroad fashion, that could give you some issues for the geographic limit, so the narrower the authorization in terms of one provision helps you potentially with other provisions. I would be less concerned about that associated forces language. If on the other hand there is no geographic limitation, that term could become very significant if, for example, the president wants to after boko haram. That is not what is intended right now but you could read that associated forces to include libya and other parts of africa as well. It seems to me as well that one of the issues that will come to the fore is that there will be some members of Congress LikeLindsey Graham and other republicans that will want this to be broader. How will you get to a language that can get majorities in both houses . It will be a challenge, and it will depend on the type of coalition that they want to build. It could consist of the grahams and the mccains and it is very republican oriented with a few democrats. But i think they want something that enjoys the support of majority members on both sides of the aisle. I think it is a challenge that can be met and what they put forward is a good starting point. Not to be overly frank here, but isnt congress rendered irrelevant in the era of the war on terror with the aumf and the administration already engaging in the activities that seek legal authorization for . I hope it isnt, but yes, for the last six months, congress has been awol. We have not had a debate in congress over it so youre absolutely right we have sidelined ourselves by saying that we have to we have not said we declare war when we ask the president. This is a chance for congress to reassert itself to show it is an equal branch with a check and balance. And i hope that we insist responsible it and make meaningful changes to this resolution. Congressman adam schiff, thank you. That is all for all in. Thank you for joining us this hour. We have breaking news tonight awkwardly concerning our own network. Nbc news announce they are suspending Brian Williams for six months without pay. Brian williams will be suspended from his role as anchor of the evening newscast and the shows managing editor. Tonights announcement, which just happened in the last hour, comes less than a week after mr. Williams publicly apologized for saying he had been on board a
