william gay ran in this mark sanchez fumble to give the steelers this 21-point lead. and a lot of people turned the off their tv. but the second half, a completely different story. the steelers did not score after half time and the jets chipped away at the lead. full highlights and reaction of this later in the show. chicago bears quarterback jay cutler getting a lot of heat online for sitting out in the second half to a close game with the packers. he says the coaches pulled him because of a bad knee. the packers didn't look all that great. that was the difference. you'll hear bears start brian urlacher rip everyone who is questioning cutlers injury later in the show. first, though, let's get to the news live at 5:00 a.m. ahead of tomorrow's state of the union address, republican leader ves drawn the battle lines on republican spending, they say. the president's speech will call for investment in key areas like education, infrastructure and technology. republicans insist the nation's budget cannot afford that kind of spending. appearing on nbc's meet the press, house majority leader eric cantor insisted serious cuts need to be made. >> this week, we will vote on an issue having to do with the presidential election fund. we're going to vote to cut that. that's ads 500 and some million dollar expenditure. we're going to see hundreds of programs experience analysis and cuts just like that. >> but let's deal with -- $500 million is a drop in the bucket. i realize it's real money. but in terms of the federal budget, that's nothing. you're not tackling entitlement. what about defense, is defense on the table? do they have to be? i'll get to entitlement in a second if you want, but we've always said this, every dollar should be on the table. >> that's the question, do you go after the ones that count? senate majority leader mitch mcconnell praised obama for pivoting towards the political center of late, but blasted the president's economic plan. >> running up debt, making us look like a western european country is the wrong direction. that's the direction they took the first two years. the american public issued a massive restraining order and i don't think we're going in that direction any longer. this is not a time to be looking at pumping up government spending in very many areas. meanwhile, senator dick durbin said contrary to what runls are saying, democrats are keeping an eye on the deficit. >> it is part of the stimulus, but we're sensitive to the deficit. i was part of the president's deficit commission and they said, be careful. don't start the serious spending cuts, the deficit reduction, until we're clearly out of the recession in 2013. maybe it will be sooner. but that warning is something we shouldn't forget. we learned in history with president frankly roosevelt that after the great depression when they started hitting the deficit breaks too soon, they went into a double dip recession and higher unemployment. we've got to go beyond that. we've got to make sure this economy is growing with more jobs and more business success. >> while the tomorrow of tomorrow night's speech will be on the economy, president obama also will press, we're told, for national unity. in a video e-mailed over the weekend, president obama made it clear that his remarks would be geared towards the political center in an attempt to reach out to members who may have been alien ated by partisan fight or be perceived government expansion. meanwhile, minnesota republican michelle bachman will deliver her own speech message in concert with the tea party express. on capitol hill, lawmaker res reaching across the aisle and partnering up to sit next to each other during the state of the union address. senator mary landrieu with senator oh olympia snowe and senator chuck schumer with senator tom coburn. are you going to sit with a democrat at the state of the union? >> i'm going to sit where i usually sit and we don't have seating assignments for most of the our members. they can sit anywhere they want to. so more important than any appearance of sitting together is what we do together. and the american people are more interested in actual accomplishments on a bipartisan basis here in the next six to nine months and they are t seating arrangement at the state of the union. >> maybe we cut back a little bit on all the jumping up and down, which i think frankly distracts from any president's speech when it's interrupted every 30 seconds by people jumping up and down because the president isn't speaking to congress, he's speaking to the american people. >> washington post conservative columnist george will dismissed the state of the union address entirely calling the event overrated. >> we've turned this into a panorama where every president try toes stroke every erogenous zone in the electorate. >> what do you think about george will saying that? >> as the house moves forward to repealing and replacing health care, republican mitch mcconnell is vowing to make health care an issue, as well. harry reid has said he will not bring the house bill to the senate for a vote where a democratic majority makes repeal unlikely. the "new york times" is reporting that since the government took over fannie mae and freddie mac, taxpayers paid nearly $6 billion in financial fraud for the companies. reports say $132 million went to defend fannie mae in lawsuits and investigations into accounting irregularities that occurred long before the subprime lending crisis even started. your tax dollars at work. jared loughner, the suspect in the tucson shooting spree will be arraigned in a federal court in arizona today. more charges expected in the case is likely to take years to play out. federal prosecutors have asked all additional hearings for loughner be held in tucson. geeb reeel giffords' care is increasing, but she'll stay in icu due to fluid build up in her brain. giffords will continue to receive therapy until she's ready for transfer to a nearby rehabilitation center. this incredible story keeps getting more incredible. the woman who raised a child stolen from a new york hospital 23 years ago is facing kidnapping charges after she now finally turned herself in. an petaway turned herself into authorities yesterday and was arrested for her alleged connection to the 1987 kidnapping of 3-week-old carlina white who is now 23. she was on the run for breaking probation for an attempted embezzlement conviction in north carolina. carlina was reunited with her familiar last week. jack lalanne westbound has died from complications of pneumonia. he began his career in 1936, opening the first modern health studio at a time when doctors said working out with weights would give people heart attacks. he later became a tv icon through a workout show that spanned 34 years. lalanne celebrated his 60th birthday by swimming from fisherman's wharf to alcatraz. he was 96 years old. if you turned off the jets/steelers game at halftime, you missed a lot. highlights of the jets' comeback, ahead. plus, what is oprah's big secret? aaron, meanwhile, struggled after the half. aaron urlacher, who could almost go all the way. bears put in second stringer todd collins. but in two drives, he went 0 for 4. with under a minute to go in the third, they put in caleb haney, an undrafted 25-year-old out of colorado state. what do you know, the kid looked good. leads the bears down the field capping the drive with a 32-yard pass to johnny knox. bears on the board. still down 7. packer estopped by the bears' defense. so hanie got another shot. this time, though, b.j.raji rumbles, 18 yards touchdown. a nice little dance. but hanie, look at this kid coming back. 35-yard touchdown pass to earl of vanderbilt university. few minutes later, same score, hanie gets a chance to be the hero in front of his home crowd. he's picked off again by shields, second of the day. packers hold on to win, 21-14. it was not pretty. the packers go back to the super bowl for the first time since 1997. the big story, though, was jay cutler. a lot of people questioning whether or not he should have come back in the game. here is some postgame reaction. >> the decision not to play, was it the doctors who made that? >> we gave it a go, but he couldn't really play it and throw so they pulled me. >> jay was hurt. i don't question his toughness. he's tough as hell. he's one of the toughest guys on our football team. he doesn't complain when he gets hit. he practices every single day, so no, we don't question his toughness. >> urlacher defended the play of others. urlacher said of drew, quote, who?
