I think at a minimum, Susan Collins has voted for every Supreme Court nominee that either party has put forward, except for Amy Coney Barrett during the trump administration. She was up for reelection. Susan collins was, but she had suggested it was a little too close to the election to vote for it. So, at a minimum, i think shell vote for it. If you look at kind of the broad landscape, Lindsey Graham has suggested that he would vote for Michelle Childs, a judge in South Carolina. There should be other people interested in Michelle Childs as well. The interesting thing to me with lujans absence, is the white house forced to recalibrate, is the white house forced to pick a more palatable choice to get a is Supreme Court justice through. Thats according to three people with knowledge of the committees activities. The times says its unclear what evidence lawmakers are examining but likely in the mix, the draft Executive Order that circulated among the former president s attorneys that would have authorized the pentagon to seize Voting Machines in key swing states. The former president is also doubling down on his idea of Pardoning January 6th Rioters if hes reelected. In an interview with news max he criticized republican Lindsey Graham who called that suggest inappropriate. Heres a reminder what senator graham said on sunday followed by trumps new comments. Well, i think its inappropriate. I dont want to reinforce that defouling the capitol was okay. I want to deter people who did what they did on january 6th. And those who did it i hope they go to jail and get the book thrown at them because they deserve it. Well, Lindsey Graham is wrong. Hes a nice guy, lindsays wrong. Senate minority mcconnell was asked about trumps suggestion of those pardons. Heres what mcconnell had to say about that. Lets start with mcconnell, how significant do you think it is that mcconnell is breaking from trump and wont offer any support for rioter who stormed the Capitol January 6th . No, 165 have pleaded guilty and i want to see these people who defouled the capitol have to face their charges and basically say what trump said as ridiculous which is a very good thing which shows that at the end of the day, trump trump encouraged and incited rioters to come into senator mcconnells and senator grahams place of work and defile it. And they know that, and they are not looking favorably on Donald Trumps suggestion. Now suggestioning pardons for january 6th rioters is certainly extreme even for trump tch. I dont want to overstate this the idea that theres some daylight between republicans and the former president. Whats your assessment right now . Weve seen some polling that trump numbers have ticked down among republicans. Do you think he still has a firm grip on the party . Donald trump still has his grip, but it definitely is quaking and quivering in places where there are plenty of Republican Voters who voted for trump, but they might be be categorized as softer trump, so to speak. And they would be okay with another republican stepping up and filling the mantle. Youve got the hard cores, the maga, the Conspiracy Wing that certainly is going to follow donald trump every step of the way. But there are plenty of other republicans who could go for someone else, if the choice presented. But the big if is, will donald trump back away and let another choice even, you know, semi prevail. In terms of markets we obviously saw the implosion in markets in january but there has been relative calm over the last couple of trading sessions. Yesterday, the s p 500 rallied into the close ending high. The techheavy nasdaq also ended higher. And we got stronger than expected data which provides a boost to sentiment, the boost jobs report showing nearly elevated 2. 9 , this results in people voluntarily quitting their jobs. There seems to be a mounting consensus that the economy is rising. Thats the story. The quit rate includes tom brady, hes part of the great resignation. Alphabet and General Motors also reported yesterday, did the Companies Meet expectations . Fill us in. Well, jonathan, al fall bet has been front and center in the last 24 hours coming in with a big beat yesterday after markets closed up. A beat on both the profit line and revenue line and announced the 20 to 1 stock split which mean alphabet could become eligible for the dow jones. Weve seen a massive rally of alphabet on the last hours and the stock. Thats one to watch today. General motors also delivered results today, and they delivered better than expected earnings. Revenues shy of expectations but importantly they said that looking ahead, the Chip Shortage of the Semiconductor Crunch seems to be easing. Finallister bucks delivering a disappointing earnings report. The company said new restrictions in china weighed on resulted and starbucks is planning to raise menu prices and reduce some spending to offset higher costs. A difficult story for starbucks but a bright one for alphabet. You mentioned General Motors. Tesla is recalling 55 million vehicles with selfdriving software to prevent rolling stops. What can you tell us . Well, let me go over the detail with you, anytime theres a recall, of course, its important to get the details right. Tesla will disable the feature with an overtheinternet update. That will allow vehicles to effectively go through interceptions with always stop signs with a slow speed. Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer said the party is working on legislation to fund the government for the rest of the fiscal year ahead of a February 18th deadline. This comes after Congress Passed two shortterm resolutions. One in september. Another in december. Kicking the can down the road to february. Lets start with negotiations on a new spending bill. Are you optimistic that congress can pass an omnibus measure before February 18th to avoid a third resolution since this began, or are we kicking the can down the road again . Well, let me answer the question this way, i sincerely hope were not kicking the can down the road but im not going to promise you were not. Im hesitant to shut down the federal government. And well see to see where they go, to discuss it and doubling down. We heard from senator manchin, we played some audio earlier today in which he proposed that build back better is dead. But we know that there is at least some hope the president has floated the idea, trying to revive at least pieces of that legislation in the weeks and months ahead. But give us an update. You have heard anything from the white house or congressional leadership about further negotiations . So, let me say this, ive got pieces of this bill that really narrow that start with electric vehicle, all everybody is talking about, General Motors and their revenues, every car company is, because of Global Warming using evs. And there are pieces of build back better and its also a funding issue. But there are many other things in there, child care, senior care, that have to get through. There are people in america that need things in that bill. We saw this week, i talked to the white house, ice talked to leadership, ive talked to senators. Weve got to figure out how were going to get this done. Joe manchin doesnt want to call it build back better anymore. Well figure that out. But we have to debt it done within that bill. Weve been talking to each other, how were we going to do it, we can Start Talking respectfully and figure out how its going to get done. And im one of those people committed is getting pieces of this bill done. Its complicated. People dont understand the reconciliation process. We cant bring ten bills up to reconciliation. Its going to get done but no action thats successful. Certainly what democrats eyeing what would be a Tough Midterm slate, the importance of that bill cant be understated. Hours before the taliban took control of afghanistan last summer, Senior Biden Administration officials were, frankly, scrambling to figure out actions they needed to take in order to pull off a mass civilian evacuation like we saw last august. Thats according to leaked notes from a White House Situation Room meeting, as compiled by nsc officials, that axios obtained. As you know well, all of this matters not just because of the way the americans watched the afghanistan situation unfold, but because these documents finally highlight that the Biden Administration was making these really crucial and, you know, numerous decisions, again, just hours before kabul fell. As youll remember, just before the former afghani president fled the country in fear of what was going to happen there. Certainly, though afghanistan has faded from the National Headlines over the last few months, it is important to have all the reporting weve had in the last few days about the ongoing crisis there. Thank you for bringing that to our attention. Switching gears, we know one of the loudest and most influential voices in the extended biden world belongs to jim clyburn. It was his endorsement that basically helped biden win the South Carolina primary back in 2020, that started his comeback, that led to the nomination. Clyburn strongly favors judge Michelle Childs to replace Justice Breyer on the Supreme Court. What is the case he is making for her . I had a chance to catch up with Congressman Clyburn by phone last week, and we talked a lot about the case for the judge Michelle Childs to replace breyer. A lot of things came up of people Remembering Biden said hed nominate a black woman. But childs is from North Carolin South Carolina, a southern. She brings a Holisitc Southern Perspective to the court which, as you know well, is a rare perspective in the chamber right now. Clyburn is really thinking not just about demographics, experience, or someones background, but the places they grew up. That unique experience shed be able to bring because of that. Also, perhaps, a nonivy league law school graduate. Obviously, the president is hes got a 50 50 senate, though right now the democrats are down a vote because of the strokes effort by the new mexico senator. But what about his hopes of getting republican support . What is his strategy for gaining bipartisan backing for whomever he ends up picking for the open spot . Clyburn told me in addition to engaging heavily with the white house, including the president and Vice President and others, he has been personally courting senators Lindsey Graham and tim scott. Of course, both republicans from South Carolina, which is another interesting kind of political dynamic or twist in childs eventual case or potential nomination. Clyburn has been discussing the merit of childs as a nominee. He told me he hasnt asked those two whether or not they will vote to confirm her, but since the conversation and since the news came out, both senators said favorable things about childs. Senator graham said he couldnt think of a better person to be considered to serve on the Supreme Court. You know well that bipartisanship is rare, and it is incredibly rare for republicans to Say Something positive about anything President Biden puts forward personnel wise or policy wise. So this suggests that someone like childs could have bipartisan support and maybe even get more than 50 votes needed to be confirmed. Certainly bipartisanship rare indeed, despite the president s hopes. The gop has largely said no. One more here, give us a 30,000 foot take about the Politics Around the pick. We know that bidens poll numbers arent great right now. Hes had some setbacks with the virus and inflation and so on, although some encouraging trends with both in recent weeks. Tell us how the white house and democrats at large are viewing the Supreme Court pick as a chance to build some momentum for the party. You cant talk to folks about the white house or democratic strategists or people with the National Democratic party who say they believe the focus on the Supreme Court will not only help the Democratic Party contract themselves with the Republican Party and what they stand for, versus what they say republicans are fighting against, but theyll really be able to energize people around the historic moment of nominating and selecting, eventually, the first black woman Supreme Court justice, which, of course, is historic and something that dems will try to celebrate. Of course, voters of color who might otherwise have been happy with the administration and democrats, the way they failed to deliver on things like build back better, so far the implementation of the infrastructure bill, and, of course, voting rights.
