This morning, it does appear the hostage standoff is winding down. Kenyas military announcing that most of the hostages have been rescued. But intense exchanges of gunfire are taking place between the military and the terrorists. The red cross is saying at least 68 people are dead. At least 175 others are hurt, including several u. S. Citizens. Nbcs ron allen is live in nairobi with the latest. Ron . Reporter good morning, brian. Yes. Winding down is one way to describe it. But the situation here is its pretty a lot of anticipation. Its also somewhat tense, as well, there are still, perhaps as many as 15 or more hostages who are being held by these gunmen. We believe theyre about 10 to 15 gunmen, as well. The military here insists theyve been able to free some of the civilians. But an exact count of whats on inside the mall is difficult to come by. Its several hundred yards down this road. Weve been pushed back because there is still sporadic gunfire, explosions wi s we can hear, ev though were this far away. A delicate situation, obviously. But the military says they have the gunmen confined to one area of the mall. We dont know how big an area it is. But the safety of these innocent civilians, men, women and children, being held, is the paramount concern one of the paramount concerns of the government. Weve seen military ambulances come in and out. Trucks come in and out, here at the perimeter. Weve seen some of the troops here taking more aggressive positions. Clearly, beginning last night at night fall, the military stepped up its efforts here. The government seems determined to bring them this as soon as possible. Back to you. The politics are difficult. As we saw again this spring. And thats sometimes where the resignation comes from, the sense that our politics are frozen and nothing will change. I cannot accept that. Our tears are not enough. Our words and our prayers are not enough. If we want to honor these 12 men and women, if we want to be a country where we can go to work, and go to school, and walk our streets free from senseless violence, without so many lives being stolen by a bullet from a gun, then were going to have to change. If the majoritys going to run the minority over with a train, the minority has the ability to stop them. If harry reid says, im going to run the republicans over, im going to ignore the bill passed by the house of representatives, im going to ignore the will of the people and do this on a 51vote threshold, it should be an easy decision for republicans to stand united and support house republicans.
