Good morning from philadelphia where Democratic Senate candidate John Fetterman is campaigning today joining Canvas Launchers here in the state. Democrats want to win in pennsylvania going to have to really bring out big margins here in this democratic stronghold but they are also going to have to pull moderates of course. Senator Amy Klobuchar of minnesota is a strategic suggestion to Drawing Fetterman on the Campaign Trail yesterday. And what was billed as an intimate conversation. 45minute q a money for the action that essentially served as a bit of a test drive for the highly anticipated debate on tuesday, against doctor oz. Focus on federal health and candidate fetterman himself made him feel the voters discussing the effect in his recovery. Here is what he had to say. I asked pennsylvanians all across the campaign, has anyone if you had a personal Health Crisis in your life . And people have their hands up. And i said, what about your parents . Or your grandparents . And two thirds or more of the hands were up in the air. And i would say, i sure hope that you did not have a doctor in your life making fun of it or making jokes about it. Or saying that you are not able to work. That last but there was a comment on doctor oz, Whose Campaign has kind of used to this moment to doing fetterman on some of his missteps. My colleague dasha burns pressing doctor oz on, that just lost. Week he said the Dossier Doctor he himself would say these things about his own patients. So well see how that plays out on the debate stage but that message that you just heard from fetterman really resonated with voters who i talked about that event ranging from super liberal supporters to a republican who recently decided to support fetterman and not only was he impressed by seeing fettermans demeanor at the event but also by his messaging on issues like inflation and of course crime. As we discussed earlier in the. Show. Its those are expected to be big topics ahead of this debate, where the Democratic Senate candidates in pennsylvanias really pulling out all the stops. President biden was here earlier this week and former president obama cotton adds just the other day deporting fetterman. So we are going to see these big pushes in these final stretches notably dr. Oz does not have any Public Campaign events on his schedule today. But as for fetterman and even the governors race between josh shapiro and dark mastriano, it is really full speed ahead in these coming weeks to election day. Sam . Julia thank you i was going to say that i appreciate the fact youve opened up the surliness on day to do this. I just a quick question. You mentioned crime. This is the crux of the campaign that they are waging against John Fetterman. That he has been weak on crime because he supported sentencing and pardons. And that is the attendant governor this is been a weak spot for his record. What is less known to me, at least, is what the futterman response to that attack out has been. You mentioned that some voters were impressed by it, but this is actual deflections an explanation . And why were they impressed by it . So, fetterman a great point you bring up because doctor oz really has been honing in on crime attacks, especially in campaign ads. And government kind of pivot when you get less on that particular asset aspect of his record. He would rather talk about his record on gun violence and addressing that issue, his time as a mayor and having to face the expected gun violence firsthand. And he talks about reducing the particular aspect of crime. And you can point to a record. And while his record was say on releasing criminals from prison which is what doctor ozs line of attack is. And betterment views that as giving American Citizens A Stepping Stone to make their event through the Criminal Justice system, he is really trying to focus on the positive us of his background. And he is also highlighting that doctor oz has no background on crime. Doctor oz, he says, doesnt have a plan to address crime. So while it is easy to go with the national gop line of democrats are bad on crime, republicans are going to be tougher on crime, fetterman says what least i have a plan. At least i have a record. Dr. Oz was a lot easier to talk about these issues because he has no plan and no record and fetterman and voters yesterday also making it that he does not want to defund the police, he wants to make sure that the police are funded. I think that over the last few months, and even the last couple of years, americans have seen saint thanks to the january Six Committee, the trump very definitely did all he could to overturn the results of a legitimately held election. Like he said, at the outset. He had no intention of actually it meeting that he lost. It was going to do everything he can to be able to remain in power. On top of that, knowing that the crowds that could be incited had weapons that he urged them to really ascend on the capital and put lives in jeopardy. People lost their lives during that attack. And at the end of the day we had an election of a little more than two weeks. And what we have to do is make sure that every american gets out to vote, and ensures that whether it is making sure that we protect Social Security and medicare, which kevin rick are the and republicans have absolutely publicly committed to and as we know. It make sure that we preserve our safety reforms that we passed. Make sure that we can continue to lower Prescription Drug costs. That is really what americans are focused on right now. But i think that the poisonous nature of where the Republican Party has turned is really adding fuel to the fire to help us ensure that we need to remain in the majority with democrats. You mentioned that we have another election coming, up obvious. Trump putting aside what happens in 2022, clearly has his mindset on running again in 2024. He seems to certainly be preparing for another president ial run. Just take a listen to what he said. Iran twice. Iran twice. I did much better the second time. And now, in order to make our country successful, safe and glorious again, i will probably have to do it again. For the record, he did not win twice. But putting that aside, in your mind how does his presence and flirtation with another run, both impact the 2022 elections that you are focused on, but also beyond and how you think the power were very sophistication into his, comments whether from congress or Fulton County or Georgia Investigation into his conduct, leading up to the production on january six. How does that flirtation affect those overtimes to . I think the fact that there were thousands of documents that were labeled top secret, particularly those that were focused on the threat that we face from iran and china, were founded literally strewing all across his residence in maralago. They show you because you dont but you get donald trump was willing to put america in. Whether it was a total disregard for our National Security interests, that actually put americans protecting us around the globe in jeopardy. To literally being willing to jeopardize our democracy. And lead himself in power. And on top of that, you still have some very solidified support because what you should really support he has, the lack of support the as my country. But he is overwhelming support in the Republican Party. And it shows you that the Republican Party of today does not care about preserving our democracy. Does not care about the Kitchen Table issues that matter to americans. Like reducing Prescription Drug costs, which are driven by democrats in congress have done. Like making sure we passed gun safety reform. And showing that people who shouldnt have guns are less likely to be able to get them. Making sure that we can lower the costs of your groceries. And see gas prices come down. Those are the things that my constituents talked me about every day. And that are the reason that we need to make sure that we maintain the majority in congress first. And the 2024 we reelect joe biden as president of the united states. And that is what i think americans will. Do congressman, very quickly, because we are running up against a commercial here. But we want to take a look and step back at the big picture. And the past couple of weeks, we have been getting a better sense of what a gop Like Congress might look like if they win. A few days ago, House Republicans introduced what they are calling a National Version of floridas socalled dont say gay bill. It is one Banning Instruction on gender identity, sexual orientation, and can run through serve third grade. This new federal bell is called, someone obviously, the stop the socialization of children act. If it were to become law, its impact would be far more sweeping. Attacking any federal funding institution, not just. Schools we also see a national ban on the. Marchand senator Lindsey Graham already talked to when you introduce legislation to ban access across the country after 15 weeks. Also on the agenda, a new trump era tax cuts for the rich are made permanent. Which many economists say contradicts the promise to reduce inflation. Thats a policy sign where the impact may be limited, as president by biden could ultimately veto any of these bills presuming they actually make it through the senate. But there will be no such restrictions when it comes to investigating. The party as promised investigations into hunter biden. And the alleged politicization of the department of justice, drawing down in afghanistan and war. Now to the discuss, this former florida congressman msnbc political analyst nathan jolly. Sam laying out what republicans have in Stock Legislatively and investigatively, what do you think the democrats have done from a strategic standpoint, in highlighting those proposals . Are they done enough to introduce the implications to the American Public . For the potential midterm election, about what could be happening in if republicans are control of congress . I think democrats naturally are kind of leaving it on the field for november 8th. Typically in the Media Information space, midterm voters are asking themselves, are we going in the right direction or wrong direction, it is often consulted with questions around the economy. But i think democrats have done a good job, saying wait a second, the right direction wrong direction question, the cycle is on your perfect your personal freedom and personal liberty and whether you want a government that actually will protect your rights to about. Protect your decision on health care. And allow you to exercise your own freedom and protect human identity. I think democrats are doing a good job. The, reality, though as you mentioned the, open is that the republican agenda. If republicans win in the, house in particular more so than the senate. If they win the house you can expect to. We will impeach joe biden, and they will pass culture or legislation. Simply for the matter of the contrast, creating contrast between the party, and laying the field for a 21 president ial. Ron this doesnt have to make it your, body because a number of these issues they can talk these into appropriation bills. The annual budget that has to pass, to keep the government open, cant contain a rider saying that notably funds provided can go to a Public School district. Which allows the conversation around sexual orientation. I would also say that the dont say gay and fort is not about instructing, students is about simply allowing a teacher to acknowledge and engage in conversation. It wasnt to say, hey suture im having questions about my own sexual orientation. Who should i talk to . I want to bring into this conversation, msnbc analyst and former Biden White House official chris wall alex. You just heard what former congressman jolly said. I guess my question for you, is for someone who has been in the white house, this current white house, how do they view the forthcoming, or potentially forthcoming, to realize how . Is there any sort of Strategic Thinking about how to work with some of those members, who may not be from the more extreme wings . Or do they view this as just sort of a likely, no holds barred fight for the next two years . Good morning, great to be with. You what i will say is some of these republicans are just impossible to work with. And what they are going to do is really trying to bog down the administration. And slow down all the progress. Oversight hearings, subpoenas, investigations. A lot of the progress made under these president s will come to a halt. And much of the action will then turn to executive orders, and working in the senate. Assuming that holds. So very little, i think, can get done with republicans. That is not across the board of what we have seen is that this president , more certainly based in recent memory, has been able to reach across the aisle and gets a big things done. Im thinking of the gun legislation, the infrastructure bill, among others. But most of that will come to a grinding halt. Because Marjorie Taylor greene of the world and others are looking at their own ambitions and really trying to reverse the progress we have seen. Some things may get by. Child tax credit. There may be some deals around that. But for the most part it will stop. I think that is even optimistic, to be honest. But we shall see. David, your expertise here. Because you have been there. Where the denim is going to be like . Lets presume that a republican majority in the house with Kevin Mccarthy, elected speaker, that does not necessarily the. Outcome it is possible that he doesnt actually end up as a speaker, although i would say that is the likeliest outcome. But what is the dynamic look like in this Republican House . There is obviously been dysfunctional publican houses in the past. Will this one have that level of dysfunction or will it even harder for somebody like mccarthy to call these members . It is a great, question. Sam you and i were on together when the Mccarthy Tapes broke on january 6th and i said look this might hold the speakership in peril. You said no, i think you will get through. And sense that he indeed has consolidated, is i dont know if i would call it the crazy caucus. In mys own congress, the crazy caucus was ten or 15 people. Now it is the majority of the caucus. So the dynamic is an interesting one. Because rather than Kevin Mccarthy trying to keep this caucus and check, he is just fully embraced it. So i think what you will see is a caucus defined by its investigations. As cristobal said. And i think a year, ago the mayor say no we will impeach joe biden. They will impeach joe biden. And the forecasts are some of that this week in releasing a letter with geo doj. Saying the issue is going to be around hunter biden and whether or not hunter biden was paid for work he did while joe biden was in office. But was paid once he left so they didnt have to disclose out. And whether or not joe biden and heard any benefit from that. Who knows what the facts are. Clearly if they are worth x, do you do with a follow. That this is going to be a republican which. Hunt but that will be the house dynamic. How quickly they move to impeach joe biden regardless of the facts and information. And cristobal, before they get to the next congress, you do have a Lame Duck Section to deal with. A couple months where members may have lost their election, but are Still Holding office. That can, be historically, a time for incredible lights relative progress. I am thinking back to after the 2010 election, when we have things likely start treaty. The repeal of dont ask dont tell. All that happened in lame duck. What are your expectations for this lame duck . And a personal level what would you like to see democrats prioritize during that compliments period . Great question. I do think i would take one step back. I know we are minute showing expectations and this is all really the assumption the democrats will lose. I would not go so far as to say that pressure will happen. I think there are a lot of headwinds, a lot of structural issues. With the elections, especially in the house. And the deaths have an uphill battle. But i do not think we should assume that it is going to change so dramatically that we are going to be stuck in a situation with the last chance to get some Real Progress will be in the lame duck. That being said, there are some components what was formally known as building back, the thing can pass a lame duck. We will think about Child Tax Credit issues, im thinking about other issues that deal with that families will need right now.
