much money as his rivals in that state. santorum picked up victories in other big races, that one being tennessee as well as north dakota and oklahoma. with just one victory for gingrich in his home state, by the way, santorum's super pac declared today it is time for mr. gingrich to step away saying "with gingrich exiting the race, it would be a true head to head race. newt has become a hindrance to a conservative alternative. let's bring in the political panel. michael smerconish is a nationally syndicated radio talk show host and contributor, a.b. stoddard, columnist for the hill and we have with us steve days, nationally syndicated radio show show host. still holding on to endorsing newt gingrich. steve, you endorsed someone. this super pac for santorum says it's time for your guy to get out of the race. what's your response? >> if i was running rick trum's super pac, that's exactly what i would be doing. i don't think it takes a genius to come do the conclusion if santorum was allowed to go one-on-one with romney in michigan and ohio, he would have won those states. i think that would have dramatically changed the complexion of the race. i don't think you've got to be a mastermind politically to figure that part of this out. >> but we were talking earlier this week about the would have, should have, could have whole scenario here. in reality though, gingrich finished third or fourth in every primary where he was on the ballot last night. why would that be convincing to anyone that he should stay in? >> well, i think he's having -- going to have a hard time making that case. i think when you have people like richard vigry who is really one of the godfathers of the modern conservative movement issuing press releases telling newt to step aside for the good of the country, i think when you see what they're tweeting today and what kind of things they're posting on social media and on their website, it's clear they are now fighting for legitimacy in this race. i'm concerned as a newt supporter. they had built up some really solid support in kansas. they have a caucus there on saturday. right now it's all about every delegate you can get. now they're not going to go to kansas and focus all of their attention on mississippi and alba ma instead, but yet these are all proportional states. you have to compete everywhere for a delegate you can. i think the next 48 hours or so are going to be difficult for newt to continue to make the case he is viable in this race. >> but it is about the delegates. and how you acquire them. we know the golden number, 1,0044 here. that's the name of the game. it's set in place. >> it is. i think steve as a newt gingrich supporter gives you a pretty blunt candid assessment of the difficulty his candidate will face. i don't see a scenario where newt can get to that number and with gingrich in the race, i don't see a scenario where santorum can get to that number. i do see a path for romney and i think that the best that santorum and gingrich both in staying in can hope for is to deny -- to deny pardon me, romney, that number of dels and hope there's chaos at the convention. >> let me bring you in, a.b. you've got santorum's team this morning focusing in on gingrich but when you look at the numbers out of ohio, rick santorum was leading in the average of polls, perhaps around four points, maybe a little greater than that. he lost that lead. and i think most people believe it is because of the answers that he was giving to questions and really his presentation, not about newt gingrich. >> well, no, but that's true. it's just that, tamron, he -- he would have won, steve is right. he would have won if you combine the gingrich and santorum votes in these pivotal contests. santorum would have won. if gingrich had stepped aside and endorsed rick santorum, weeks ago, and had really said, this is truly about stopping mitt romney. if it was truly about stopping mitt romney and not helping him, he would have gotten out and helped rick santorum. he pretends that rick santorum isn't a real conservative. if he's so concerned about a real conservative, he needs to choose rick santorum over mitt romney. everybody knows that. there's no disputing rick santorum is more conservative to someone like newt gingrich than mitt romney is. so yes, santorum has lost his leads. he's made a lot of mistakes. i also think that even privately, mitt romney's team would admit to you that they could have lost michigan and ohio without their money edge. that's significant. santorum made a strong showing across a big breadth of the grassroots of the party in lots of different parts of the country these last couple weeks. he might not have a direct path to the nomination but gingrich has none. >> let me switch over to mitt romney because he should be, michael, the 4headline here. we're talking about the fire happening with the more conservative in the party who still do not find mitt romney to be their credible choice. i want to play what the mitt romney said this morning in his only post interview with cnbc. basically he says i've got the money and i've got the time. let's play it. >> i'm prepared to fight all the way to become the nominee, and you know, i was pleased with our success last night. obviously we've got a very strong lead in dels. we've got the time and the resources and a plan to get all the delegates and we think that will get done before the convention. but one thing i can tell you for sure is, there's not going to be a brokered convention. >> so michael, that sounds good on paper but as we played earlier with joe scarborough saying that alabama, mitt romney in his opinion will lose, mississippi, that's a loss, louisiana, that's a loss. this is a republican candidate who will not be strong in the south, but steve writes in his article, listen, this is knot about the social conservatives versus the establishment because if he's a rhino or not, his party will get behind him eventually if he's the nominee. >> yes and no. some weaknesses were exposed for governor romney and the fact that he can't get to 30% in any of those southern states thus far is a real problem in terms of turnout in the fall. and i would couple that, tamron, with the observation that turnout in this primary season, despite what happened in 2010, lags behind 2008. so there's a real enthusiasm gap. even if romney captures the nomination as i still think he will, you have to question what kind of turnout is there going to be against barack obama in the southern base. >> steve, is that a concern for you? >> yes, i think what's happening here is there's a deeper fissure that is erupting within the republican party. it started a little bit four years ago with mike huckabee challenging the establishment. then we had tarpz and bailouts and crony capitalism reigning supreme. what you're seeing now is flat out class warfare, the crony capitalists. mitt romney can not win sam's club republicans that are not mormons anywhere in battleground states. if he can't win them in michigan and ohio, you cannot win the presidency if you can't probably need to hear the audible voice of god to back mitt romney. >> and that doesn't come. >> that's probably what it would take for me to do it. >> i don't think that comes around very often. so i'm going to take that as a know with biblical backing there. steve, you stumped me on that one. i was thinking it the voice of god. thank you, a. b., michael, as well. up next, conservatives say they it's not as if they will vote for president obama. would they stay at home? >> well, i think you just heard steve why he thinks many people like him are going to stay home. that's really the challenge for mitt romney. when he started this, look, republicans four months ago were convinced they were going to win this election. now the president is at 50% approval rating. the economy remains stable and improving if not slowly. unless that is reversed, he's a much tougher incumbent contender than he looked like in the late fall. so republicans very flefrs this is slipping away. rick santorum lost a lot of critical time talking about the evils of contraception and college education when he should have been fighting mitt romney on obama care and romney care, something that gal vaizes the party and the days and independents who can't stand that law. he wasted all that time. now that independent voter who's might want to see obama go but see that generally things are getting better, look at someone like mitt romney who can't take the health care fight to president obama. that was a missed opportunity for santorum, but again, a real burden around the neck of mitt romney as he tries to appeal to the party and beyond. >> jimmy, was there any good news for mitt romney? willie geist this morning on "morning joe" pointed out how everyone said he needs to win ohio. he did. santorum once said a win is a win. we've all said that. the guy won. was there no good news for him last night? >> no question. i mean, in one part, the occupy movement was inspired by the civil rights movement. martin luther king junior at the end of his life was looking forward to coming to washington, d.c. to mobilize against poverty. he was going to occupy washington, d.c. until justice was done. as it turned out in the aftermath of his death, the forces stayed in the city in washington, d.c. for two months. so the occupy wall street borrows in a sense reaching back to the civil rights movement and yes, we should participate because these are grassroots efforts that are geared toward some of the universal problems that is afflict all vulnerable people who happen to be economically as well as racially at risk. >> and those being jobs and income inequality first and foremost. ask you about this education department report released yesterday about african-american students, particularly males, there's far more likely to be suspended or expelled from school than their peers. the numbers are such. black students made up 18% of the students in the sample but 35% of the students suspended once and 39% expelled were african-americans. and we know that education is of the utmost importance but when you look at these numbers, do you see some type of injustice especially when we're talking about black boys so easily put in a category of being problematic? >> absolutely. the kind of criminalization and demonization and the stigma associated with young black boys makes it very difficult for even otherwise enlightened teachers to deal with them. so that when johnny and sally, little white kids are acting up, don't do that anymore and you sit down and you behave, whereas young black boys in particular and black children more generally are targeted. then they end up becoming more vulnerable to juvenile detention which leads to juvenile detention centers which leads to jail and so they get criminalized and put in the system all together when their white counterparts are not wheated the same. it's the same thing with drugs. young white kids do far more drugs than young black kids. yet, black kids suffer disproportionately. this is an overall pattern of discrimination against young black boys and girls. >> this is a report from the education department and too many people won't see this. this go unseen or untalked about far too much. thank you very much, professor dyson. a great pleasure having you on. >> thanks for having me. >> up next, the ipad 3 is finally unveiled. apple promises the quality of a display like you've never seen before. but first, there's a lot going on today. here's things weise thought you should know. dennis kucinich has fallen victim to his state's newly drawn congressional map. marcy captor defeated the two-time presidential candidate in last night's ohio primary. the former allies were pitted against each other in a new district drawn by the state's republican-controlled legislature. and britain's prince harry took to the dance floor in jamaica to celebrate his grand another mother the gene's diamond jubilee. at dinner last night, the prince offered up a little humor with an unexpected but familiar quote. take a listen. >> her majesty has asked me to extend her great good wishes to you all and is sorry she can't be here so you're stuck with me, but won't because every little thing is going to be all right.
