that the congressman asked a porn star named ginger lee to lie about their relationship and it claims he offered her help from someone on his pr team to do it. the question now, did anthony wiener use congressional resources? nbc's kelly o'donnell joins me now. kelly, quite honestly, you have a lot of people critical of the media saying this story is salacious but when you look at this new allegation from this adult film star, she is claiming that the congressman offered her some kind of help. the question is was it private pr team or was he referring to congressional aides here? >> reporter: members of congress always have a political operation that runs their campaigns and a separate team that works for the government. and anthony wiener when he announced this news conference yesterday that was so explosive around so humiliating, did he not do that from his official congressional staff. he did that from the friends of anthony wiener, the frequent type of name for a political committee. so pr help, if in fact it was offered, may have been an outsider, not a government employee. that's the kind of question though that really opens the door to a deeper ethics investigation. there's been a call for that, as you know. top democrats have said that is appropriate here to find out did he use government equipment, phones, computers, blackberries, that sort of thing. wiener says he did not but we already know he has admitted to many lies and he's also said he may not be aware of every communication he had during this time of a few years with at least six women. so the big questions now as women come forward with accusations is what they're saying true, does it open new doors he hasn't answered? the pressure is building. the republican national committee chairman had no hesitation to say that wiener should resign. in a statement he said, congressman wiener's actions and deception are unacceptable and he should resign. we do not need an investigation to know he lied and acted inappropriately. we need a resignation. and that's a subtle reference to the top democratic leadership in the house that is saying that an ethics robe is tprobe is the ne. democrats are not publicly calling on him to res sig -- resign, and chuck schumer, i'm told he was called by weiner before he came public with his comments but the senator didn't know the extent of it until the news conference, and schumer has said that he believes that wiener is a good public servant but he's deeply saddened by what's going on. if wiener thought being tearful would end it, that is not the case. the pressure continues to build. >> it does. kelly, what would be a time line for an ethics investigation? >> reporter: they can be very lengthy. and sometimes what happens is the political pressure works faster than the committee does. they are not here this week, so likely it would be next week when they would have an opportunity to call a meeting, decide will they go forward, that kind of thing. it could play out over time. they could do interviews and all of their work happens in secret. so in other cases sometimes the pressure is so great someone will step down first. in a case on totally different circumstances, charles rangel of new york, he weathered it and was ultima thely censured but stayed in office and was re-elected. it can play out differently but the ethics committee is unique in congress in that it is evenly split, republicans and democrats in equal numbers to make it as less partisan as possible, and the ball could be in their court very soon. >> kelly o'donnell live for us on capitol hill. thank you, kelly. joining me now is chris lahain, a clinton adviser during the monica lewinsky scandal. thank you so much for joining me. >> thanks for having me. >> you heard kelly mention charlie rangel. i know in a couple other pieces people have brought up david vitter and how he managed to survive his own sex scandal after the madam came out and said he had been with prostitutes. how does anthony wiener survive this one? >> i think there's a couple factors at play. first and foremost, how do his constituents feel about him? it's a safe democrat district. do the constituents stay with you? secondly, what is going to happen on the legal end? obviously, additional facts or at least reputed facts are coming out on an almost hour by hour basis. does that potentially create additional legal exposure, particularly with the age of women, does it create deeper ethical issues? thirdly, how will the republicans handle a potential ethics inquiry? do they want a head on a stake or will they approach this a different way. i think lastly, and i think kelly was getting at this which is what type of pressure do the other democratic members in the house put on him? that ultimately be the driving factor in all of this. certainly you look around and today you have david vitter in the senate. you obviously have newt gingrich running for president. you had other folks who have weathered similar scandals, but he is without question in a deep, dark, unspinable place right now. i think a lot of the factors that are going to play out are beyond his control at this point. >> you in this "washington post" article, you talk about the novelty and the shock value, that may actually hurt congressman wiener because of the whole twitter and a lot of people didn't even know that quite honestly or how to send a picture via twitter. now it's exposing the audience to a whole new kind of salaciousness that's available. >> you have an interesting synergy behind this story. you have the work press corps, the washington, d.c., press corps sort of ping-ponging off each other. obviously you add in the novelty element of this being at least to the best of our knowledge the first political twitter scandal of this era, a social media scandal and that creates an enormous amount of energy and the story. he would be in a very difficult place no matter what, but if he had answered this and dealt with it in the first 24 or 48 hours as opposed to digging a deeper hole over a seven-day period it would not have gotten to the level it is now. >> when you think about it as well, it's one thing to hear someone is having an affair or even an alleged mistress to come out, but here you have photographs, which also makes the story linger on and on. but let me ask you what do you believe should be his next move? as kelly pointed out, nothing on the record from him today. i got to be honest, i was watching that news conference yesterday and at some point i felt like i wanted to scream at the television and say, just stop, just stop. you have said what you needed to stay, go away, and it almost was as if he felt that taking the punishment there would somehow be seen as him repenting for what he's done wrong here. but what does he do next? >> it did certainly seem like your pound of flesh press conference. it reminded me of the old batman show when i was a kid, ka opinika-pow, ka-boom. it reminded me of the mark sanford press conference where you sort of went out there because you felt you had to vent to put it behind you but you weren't necessarily prepared to answer all the questions. at this point going forward, i think he should really embrace the ethics inquiry, call for it, say he wants to use it as a vehicle to get all this information out there and basically use that as a shield for all these questions that are coming forth. every time a question comes up, you say if there's an ethics inquiry, i'm cooperating fully. all the information will come out through that vehicle. it gives you some place to go rather than trying to answer questions. >> the other big story, the u.s. economy -- the bigger story here, and fears of the double dip recession ended up becoming the focus of a news conference with president obama that he held today with german chancellor angela merkel. merkel was formally welcomed earlier today for her official visit, the first european leader to receive the red carpet treatment from the president. in about four hours the president and the first lady will welcome the chancellor to the white house for a state dinner. after talks on a wide range of issues the two leaders held that news conference and president obama faced new questions about last friday's disappointing jobs report. >> i'm not concerned about a double dip recession. i am concerned about the fact that the recovery that we're on is not producing jobs as quickly as i want it to happen. this month you still saw job growth in the private sector but it had slowed down. we don't yet know whether this is a one-month episode or a longer trend. >> nbc's chris tkristin welker s from the white house. jobs and the economy the topic. >> certainly the economy is taking center stage at the white house. you heard the central question they're trying to answer. are these recent disappointing numbers a blip or is it reflective of a larger slow down in the recovery. the president has long held the message that recovery takes time. there will be bumps on the road. they're opening that these new numbers are just reflective of one of those bumps, but they're getting some discouraging poll numbers. recent poll shows that 59% of respondents disprove of the president's handling of the economy. so that certainly is not a welcome number. on top of all of this, the chairman of the council of economic advisers, austan goolsbee, announced last night he would be resigning to head back to the university of chicago to resume his teaching position there. so there will be some new faces certainly as they move forward to deal with this. tim geithner, the only remaining senior member of the original economic team here at the white house. so a lot of changes, but again they are trying to focus on that central question, is this just a blip or is this something longer, some larger trend that they need to be concerned about? >> what else can you tell us about this state dinner later this evening? >> reporter: well, they will be awarding chancellor merkel the medal of freedom, which is certainly a very large deal. she has expressed throughout the day how honored she is, but underlining this pomp and circumstance are some differences between the two nations, namely over libya. as you know, germany did not support the nato-led military efforts to libya. president obama and the chancellor certainly discussed that today. however, they put a bit of a positive spin on it. president obama saying that germany's efforts in afghanistan have allowed the nato-led efforts in libya to really resume and continue as they need to. so certainly some serious topics here, but also some pomp and circumstance. the main purpose of this visit is to express the strength between the two nations. >> kristen, thank you so much for that live report from the white house. and coming up, is there a connection between a missing nursing student in california and the unsolved murder of another nursing student? >> there's a few pieces of information in evidence. what the police say is, first of all, through various interviews they have con doesn'ted, about 25 in total with family, friends, and persons of interest, persons of interest, not just one, also information obtained from her cell phone just prior before it going dead. there were some calls and things like that that were made, a collection of evidence from inside of the vehicle, and also where the vehicle was found along with those surveillance tapes. they've got a lot of information to go on, a lot of pieces to this puzzle they have already put together, but unfortunately, they have not been able to find michelle's body. >> can you tell me anything more about this video from the garage? as i mentioned, michelle le apparently told her co-workers she was going out to her vehicle. >> yeah, that's right. she said, hey, look, i'm going to go outside to my vehicle, had her keys in hand, and went out there. what happened in between that point we're not exactly sure. but we do know that there was some surveillance video nearby that may have captured the car, may have captured someone waiting by the vehicle, may have captured someone going into the garage. so what it appears is investigators, they have a lot of their key players and a lot of the key pieces and they're just -- they're waiting for a couple more to come in. >> speaking of key pieces here, there's a question as to whether or not michelle le's disappearance to be linked to another murder and kidnapping, a young woman also a nursing student with the same last name, the same spelling, le,e esshe wa nursing student as well. >> that was in april 2010, she was kidnapped, her body was found just 12 days later. the case is still ongoing, and so -- and, of course, with the same last name, they're both nursing students, both from the same area. this is, of course, something where you say they've got to be connected. there's got to be some sort of connection. but investigators are saying, whoa, not too fast. we have some other people we're moving forward with, and they've come out and normally these types of cases, if they don't have a lot, they're saying we need some tips which they do need to find michelle but the family is holding out hope, as they should, because her body has not been found. although there is some information to say she may have been murdered, this could possibly be a homicide, it's very hard for a family in this type of active investigation to cling orn to that and to say, my gosh, my loved one has been killed. >> okay, michelle, thank you very much for the latest on this story. we'll keep following that one. interesting case. no end in sight for a massive wildfire burning hundreds of thousands of achers in eastern arizona. thousands of people have been evacuated out of the line of the fire and the blaze is still expanding. look at some of these new images. smoke and it's reached as far as iowa and is being fueled by high winds, lightning, and very dry conditions. officials are now saying an abandoned camp fire may have sparked the flames. for an update on the situation on the ground, joining me on the phone from springerville, arizona, is terry, from the fire information team. how many people have been evacuated at this point?
