we begin this morning with tragedy averted. this week, americans marked the martin luther king holiday, a day supposed to be championing nonviolence. but we're now learning that someone may have had a very sinister plan for one tribute to dr. king. authority say a potentially -- authorities say a potentially lethal bomb was planted on the parade route of a martin luther king jr. holiday celebration in spokane, washington, on monday. city employees spotted the device just about an hour before the parade which was re-routed. a bomb disposal unit safely disposed of the bomb. so far there are no suspects and no clear motive. for the first time, arizona officials are publicly describing the chilling surveillance video that shows a tucson gunman shooting congressman gabrielle giffords at close range before unleashing fire on the crowd. according to the pima county sheriff's department, the footage reveals that judge john roll appears to have died while trying to save the life of one of giffords' employees. meanwhile, we are now learning more on giffords' condition through her husband, mark kelly. nbc's jay gray has our report. there are thousands of things to love about her. >> reporter: right now what mark kelly loves the most is his wife's unyielding spirit and strength in the face of such a devastating injury. >> she had a gunshot wound to the head. so it's going to be a slow process. >> reporter: all still difficult to comprehend for the man who spends most every hour at her bedside. >> i'm still in a state of disbelief. you know, i look at her and see what was -- see what was done to her, and consider what recovery's going to be like for her. it's going to be hard work. you know, it's just not right. >> reporter: in a wide-ranging interview with tucson nbc affiliate kvoa, congresswoman gabrielle giffords' husband, astronaut mark kelly, talked about signs of her recovery. reaching out to touch his hand. their wedding ring, and his face. >> she's getting a little better each day. she's going to recover. there's six folks that don't get that opportunity. >> reporter: including little 9-year-old christina taylor green, brought to the town hall meeting by a neighbor who was wounded in the shooting spree. >> she kneeled down and said, "christina, this is congresswoman giffords. and someday maybe you can grow up to be like her." and those were the last words that christina ever heard. >> reporter: as for the accused gunman, jared loughner -- >> i've barely thought about him to be honest. a couple of days ago i actually had to ask somebody what his name was. i haven't been watching the news or reading the newspaper. i've just been trying to take care of gabby. >> reporter: the labor of love that he admits can be overwhelming. >> it's been hard to kind of just wrap my head around this whole thing. >> reporter: for now he does the best and only thing he can -- >> just take one day at a time. >> reporter: each of those days a little more precious, a little more important than the one that came before. jay gray, nbc news. the nation's capitol is the center of global attention this morning as president obama plays host to chinese president hu jintao in a meeting of the top two powers. nbc's tracie potts joins us with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. he's got a busy day starting with private meetings with president obama, and then a sitdown with some of the top ceos from american businesses and from chinese companies that are investing in the united states. the issue here is china's currency. it is rising, but it's so low that it keeps chinese goods super cheap. and that makes it very difficult for american businesses to compete. they'll talk about that today. also at issue today, china's record on human rights. critics are pressing president obama to address this during the president's four-day visit. he's also being criticized for throwing a latvish state dinner considering china's. chinese stars are being shown 300 times a day in new york's times square. it is amazing. a lot of people around the country being exposed to the president's visit. also i should mention that here on capitol hill today, while that is going on at the white house, here on capitol hill they'll be voting on whether or not to repeal health care. lynn? >> thank you very much. and last night on the "rachel maddow show," she asked house minority leader nancy pelosi if democrats are looking to use the proposal to repeal health care reform as an opportunity to convince americans of the law's benefits. >> what is most convincing of all, though, is having the bill come into effect and people seeing what it means in their lives. what we're seeing is that those that had to remove pre-existing conditions, important to children and women, allowing a young person to stay on his or her parents' policy until he's 26 years old, the lifetime limits. all of those things, having preventive care, not have a co-pay, for example. as people understand what this means to their health and economic security because of reducing cost, i think will have -- people will have a more favorable view of it. when people say they're opposed to the bill, some of it is because it doesn't do enough. and that's never put into the calculations. you're opposed to it so you're opposed to any health care initiative. no. some people thought it should do more. >> lean forward with rachel maddow each night as she tackles the biggest stories of the day. don't miss the "rachel maddow" show weeknights at 9:00 p.m. on msnbc, the place for politics. in other news around america, in pennsylvania, an enormous natural gas explosion rocked a residential neighborhood killing a utility worker. that blast occurred as firefighters and utility employees worked to patch up a rusted and ruptured gas line. four other workers and one firefighter were transported with injuries to local hospitals. in texas, a few cows had to move out of the way of one police chase. a burglary suspect led police on a high speed chase that ended when his vehicle crashed through a fence and into a cow pasture. the suspect was arrested. none of the cows were hurt. in florida, an elderly woman was dragged through a parking lot after two female suspects in a passing vehicle snatched her purse. the 78-year-old was the latest victim in a string of drive-by purse snatchings. police say she sustained bruises and cuts all over her body but should survive. in new york, every day's a great day for a workout, right? even outside. look at this guy. one 58-year-old had gone for a swim and a run every day for more than three years, rain, shine, or sleet. he started it as a way to relieve stress, but now he says he can't think of any other way to start his day. now for a look at your national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. even yesterday, bill. >> ice in his veins. it was nasty. yesterday was just a miserable day. >> didn't even want to walk home. that just makes me feel like a complete slacker. >> no, smart. let's talk about this morning. you look out the window, once again at the raining or drizzling out there. you need the umbrella and the galoshes, too. as far as areas to the north, this white is an area of light snow over northern pennsylvania, from scranton up to binghamton. then the pink is light freezing rain. that's all we need after about a half inch of ice yesterday in the hudson valley through connecticut. a little coating of freezing rain this morning. thankfully a lot of locations are above freezing. it's just wet on the roads. it's only extreme northern portions of pennsylvania through the hudson valley and high terrain of connecticut and massachusetts that will have to deal with icy stuff this morning. here we go again, one day after another. now around the country, the next storm system is taking shape. we're getting rid of this mess in the east coast. a little rain out there around jacksonville, florida. the next storm is now coming down into wyoming. this one is going to be like a mini snowstorm. it's not going to be a blockbuster storm like we've had a couple of this winter. this will be snow that will produce three to six inches, two to four inches over a wide swath. here's already winter storm warnings for kansas city. snow should break out after noon. st. louis, snow should break out after dark. by tomorrow, you'll have a couple inches on the ground. you can already see the winter weather advisories are in the white. even as far south as little rock and memphis could deal with a little bit of wintry weather. now our computers are predicting the snow. and this is what it's showing us. the bull's eye through today, into tonight, around kansas city. as much as six inches. after that, it's a weaker storm. the white coating if you look at the picture, three to six inches. through st. louis, where the mississippi and ohio river meet, along the ohio river, cincinnati, lexington, louisville, going to get coated with snow. pittsburgh, southern areas of ohio. west virginia, and then eventually this one looks like it could even clip washington, d.c., philadelphia, new york, and southern new england with about two to four inches of snow. maybe three to six. that will be thursday night into friday morning. so the other story -- very cold air in the northern plains. windchill now minus one in minneapolis. so the forecast finish today, drizzle exiting the east. and then we'll watch our mini snowstorm broeaking out in kanss city. >> can't get enough of it. thank you very much. apple zings, ibm ticks, and boeing flies. your first look at this morning's business headlines is straight ahead. coming up, more bad karma for lebron and the heat. a tennis player giving new meaning to flying off the handle. you're watching "first look" on msnbc. winter can be beautiful.
