Its often said art transcends cultural differences, and that holds true for the work of famous japanese poet. As well see in our next report people in both japan and china are remembering her legacy 120 years after her birth. Reporter kaneko musuzu was born in 1903 in western japan. Her poems have been translated into 13 languages including english, thai, and persian. Another country where they have become popular is china. More than 50 collectionsor work have been published there, and some poems are even included in Elementary School textbooks. She was the translator who helped ignite this boom. She first came across kanekos poems when she was studying at a university in yamaguchi. As a student of japanese literature far from her homeland wu found kanekos poems resonated deeply. Translator reading kanekos poems was comforting for me. I could feel my mood brighten as i read them, as if i was rediscovering my inner child. Reporter since she began translating her poems into chinese one experience in particular has stood out for wu. In 2008 an earthquake in Sichuan Province left more than 80,000 victims. At an Elementary School in the disaster area students read wus translation of a poem by kaneko. Its about a tiny droplet of water from a flower known as misu hagi. Miso hagi on the bank of the stream. No one knew this flower. The stream flowed all the way to the far away ocean in the big, big ocean a tiny, tiny droplet was always thinking of that unknown miso hagi. That droplet was a dew drop from the lonely miso hagi. One of the School Children who read the poem wrote the following comment. When i read the poem about the miso hagi flower i thought of my family members who died. The water droplet is me, and the flower is my family. Just like the droplet yearns for that flower i will always think of my family. Translator it moved me that the child had read the poem so deeply. The words must have had some healing power. I think kanekos poems express things that are universal, being shared by all people, emotions and sensations that all children share because they are so familiar. I think that is why kanekos words transcend all borders and the reason why they affect people everywhere. Reporter kanekos simple words expresses a universal message that conjures up a sense of nostalgia, and that is why they resonate so deeply with readers around the world. And now heres a threeday outlook on the worlds weather. And that wraps up this edition of nhk newsline. Im raja pradhan in tokyo. Theres much more to come on nhk world japan, so please do stay with us. Welcome to newsline in depth. Today we look at the concept of peace or rather the absence of it in the world we live today. Russias invasion of ukraine usually dominates the news cycle but in the middle east the decades conflict continues to smolder. When indian Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu returned to power last december he assembled what has been the most rightwing government in israels history and it has stoked tensions with the palestinians. The gaza strip is home to 2. 3 million people. 45 of them children no more than 14 years old. The Israeli Government restricts the flow of people and cargo often preventing people from leaving their neighborhood. And thats led to a severe shortage of food, daily necessities, and jobs. Human rights watchers called it an open air prison. Its not easy to leave the gaza, but one group managed to recently. They flew to japan to learn about peace education. We joined them to find out what insight they gained and how they will apply it to the complex situation back home. Reporter at the beginning of 2023 a group of palestinian teachers traveled to japan, a journey that took them 48 hours. Translator it was arduous with checkpoints and airports, but we are very happy to finally be here. Reporter he was one of those who made the trip. He teaches High School Biology in Southern Gaza where classes always take place under the shadow of a possible attack. His students are curious about the world outside, and news of his trip to japan sparked a lot of excitement. Reporter anxiety and sleep disorders are a part of life for many students and worsened significantly after a military escalation in 2021. For 20 days missiles and rockets damaged schools and leaving 60 children dead. He wants to help his students their trauma and he hopes hiroshima might have some clues. Translator im very interested in learning how to teach students to find inner peace. Reporter the group also wanted to find out how the city devastated by an atomic bomb in 1945 maged to bome bot a thring moder city and an International Symbol of lasting peace. Hiroshima educators make sure peace isnt just taught but ingrained. They make it their mission to ensure the students fully comprehend what happened and never take for granted the peace they now enjoy. The gaza teachers were in a fifth grade class in which students were learning about a girl who lost her entire family to an atomic bomb. Reporter he says he was impressed by the amount of interaction in the classroom and how it helped students consider the concept. Translator i think it was great that they were actually discussing peace in class. The teachers from gaza then spoke about the conditions under which their students live and what they are learning. When the students heard about children whose ability to learn at school peacefully is under threat, they realize the issue isnt something relegated to history textbooks. Translator i can see that everyone is doing the best they can, but its really sad that schools have been destroyed and students have died. Translator i want to tell lots of people about the horrors of war and the situation in gaza. Reporter after class the teachers from gaza and hiroshima discuss their common goals and vast differences. Those from gaza said it was almost impossible for them to discuss peace in the classroom when theres conflict all around. Reporter the following day the group visited the hiroshima Peace Memorial museum. They were greeted by an atomic bomb survivor who lost her parents when she was 12. Reporter he wrote an entry in the Museum Guest Book that spoke of a common experience and shared goals. Translator what happened in gaza is the same as what happened in hiroshima. We hope to see an end to wars and destruction. We want to build that kind of world. We are with you. When the teachers returned to gaza what did they share with their students . Nhk worlds Jerusalem Bureau chief joins us from gaza to tell us more. Tiichi violence between the israelis and palestinians has intensified since the start of april, and we know there have been air raids in gaza. What is the Current Situation . Reporter the tension is still really high here. A clash two weeks ago was triggered by the Israeli Police raiding the alaqsa mosque. Weapons are fired from gaza which st. Controlled by the hamas. Israeli forces claim they attack mainly military sites in gaza. So thats the reality the students are facing every day. Reporter thats right. And they seemed really encouraged when the teachers told them the students in the holy country cared about what was happening in gaza. We saw the students asking him to share with them what he saw. What did he tell them . He talked about the difference in the way teachers interact with the students in japan, how there was much more than you usually get in gaza. And he immediately got them working in that way. But how does he plan to incorporate lessons on peace for his students whose daily lives are full of destruction and violence . Well, as he mentioned its not easy to talk about peace in gaza. They have been under siege for 25 years now. And with the government in israel leaning to the right, its hard for people to envisage anything else. They simply cant raise the c concept of peace to children who are emotionally scarred so far from that kind of life. Its difficult to even guarantee them a Safe Learning environment. It is 30 years when the israeli and pal staestinians started tok about the future of the state but theres no such state yet. So for palestinians just talking about peace can feel like giving into the israelis. Well, youve covered the middle east for years, but what are your views on the prospect of peace for the children of gaza given the difficulty of even talking about it . At this point i dont personally hold out any hope of peace. There havent been any peace talks since 2014, and now one foreign minister has publicly said one palestinian village should be wiped out. Thats unprecedented. And Palestinian People are divided themselves. The first step is united the west bank and gaza politically. I didnt say i cannot see peace ahead, but i also know there are people like hamdam and his students who are trying to nurture peace and solutions at the grass roots level to prevent the conflict from becoming i intend to find hope however small in the efforts by the people. Thank you, taiichi. We leave you with a video of children in gaza who fly kites in hope every march as a way of encouraging children affected by the great east japan earthquake of 2011. The fact they can have compassion for others who are suffering is a strong message about the power of peace. Thats all for todays newsline in depth. Thank you for watching. Going ok city .
