Some of our friends that were with us Say Something is going on. Some of the aides brought some papers, and you saw President Trump and Prime Minister abe actually reading the paper, and they had a little flashlight, you know, so that they could see. And right after that when the dinner was finished, they went into another room where they made a official communique. And when they came back, they werent smiling as much. Exports were up 2. 6 due to increased shipments of cars and smartphone components to the u. S. Andnd china. Corporate Capital Investment was also up by 0. 9 . Not all figures were positive. Public investment was down by 1. 8 . Consumer spending was also in the negative, off by 0. 01 . Its the first time in a year for the figure to go into the red. For 2016 as a whole, japans gdp registered positive growth of 1 in real terms and nominal gdp was 537 trillion yen or 4. 7 trillion. For more insight, my colleague, a uchida spoke with the dean of research at the Asian DevelopmentBank Institute in tokyo and an expert on the japanese economy. How do you evaluate the latest gdp figures . It showed the consumption is stable and investment has recovered a little bit, but consumption may still remain very stable, unless we can do something about aging population. Aging population relie on social securities, and so they tighten their consumption. As far as the investment are concerned, there are some recovery. However, rural area investment is still sluggish. I think the new finance site like a Hometown Investment trust fund, which can promote startups in rural region will be required. What kind of risks and challenges do you see for japans economy in 2017 . The President Trump and Prime Minister abes discussion in this time was mainly focusing on security issues, so thats why the market reacted very stable. However, once they Start Talking about trade issues and economic issues, the news has the Current Exchange marketet. So im concerned that productivity in the Exchange Market may exacerbate that and cap the flows. Then the stock price of japan and u. S. Will be unstable. So, that is the first risk. Second one is oil price. Japan relies on oil and natural gas a lot, and japan have been benefited by Lower Oil Prices in the past two years, but if the price of oil recovers a little bit, then that will have some risks for japan. And last risk is about aging population demographic. And japan and retired people are increasing. That has a very big impact on government budget deficit, so i hope that japanese elderly people will keep on working much longer after their retirement, but the wage rate should be based on productivity. That will be a very important thing for medium and long term. Okay. How much is Monetary Policy supporting growth . Okay, in the short run, Monetary Policy supports because Monetary Policy, pririnting mon and purchasing government bonds, then that will contribute social securities to elderly people. But japanese biggest problem is infrastructure, denim graphy and they cannot do anything about it. If the population becomes older, the impact of Monetary Policy becomes less and less because young people can benefit from Monetary Policy. Their wage rate will go up and so on. However, the elderly people is outside of those Monetary Policy. Okay. So, which prompts your call for structural reform. Yes. I see. Okay, i want to go back to what you mentioned about trump and abe. They did have a meeting over the weweekend and we saw that, you know, they didnt emphasize their differences regarding the economy. You mentioned a little bit earlier, too, but how do you see the relationship between the two affecting japan Going Forward . I think there are lots of coordinations we can do together between japan and United States. Many people are focusing on conflicts. However, it is not only manufacturing industries. Japan is supporting services industries, retails. So we should talk about not only manufacturing but also other sectors. At the same time, japan can contribute Energy Sector, and trump is going to implement Infrastructure Investment in United States. He starts off with the dire situation in northern california. Jonathan. Hello. Well, we have been talking about the intense amount of rainfall that has been falling in the northern portions of california. And because of that, the good news on one side is the fact that the drought situation has been really, really cleared up in a good portion of the state of california. Where on the flip side, theres been a lot of extra water in the area, and thats starting to fill up the reservoirs. And one of those situations is causing an accidental problem, because the spillway in which the waters supposed to seep out has the possibility of collapsing, which is water flooding into areas that it should not be entering. Let me show you the video to give you an idea of the situation taking place here. About 180,000 people near lake orville in northern californiaa were o ordered to evacuate immediately sunday after authorities said an auxiliary spillway was in danger of imminent collapse. That order went out sunday afternoon after engineers found a holole that was eroding back toward the top of the spillway. Water levels were less than two meters from the top of the dam friday as levels of the reservoir rose due to heavy rain and snow during the winter. So, again, in one aspect, the water has been coming from the continuous rainfall thats been in the area. The rainfalls helpful. The potential flooding from the spillway collapsing, thats the serious danger. And so, officials are continuing to monitor the situation as we go forward in time. The weather is going to help just a little bit because i it going to stay dry for the next couple of days. We have to go closeser to wednesday, thursrsday before we see rain comining into the picture. So, at least were not adding on to the issue, but that concern of collapse has been on the minds of the officials there, and so there have been attempts to bring in bags of rocks to be placed there to try to support the spillway fromm collapsing. And so, hopefully, theyll be able to take advantage of the drier weather pattern in the meantime. We go toward the end of the week, lets say around thursday, friday, before we see that rain coming back into the picture. Theyre not the only ones dealing with kind of a potential issue there when it comes to the weather. Down toward the Desert Southwest we have a couple areas of low pressure thats going to bring a mix of some stormier conditions, maybe a bit of Winter Weather as well. Its a bit of a mess there.
