The Iraqi Government called on shia militias for support. A local lawmaker says 4,500 fighters have gathered outside the city, but people in the sunnidominated province of anbar may express opposition to the use of shia forces. Ramadi has been one of the key cities in the campaign. Last month iraqi forces retook the Northern City of tikrit with the help of usairstrikes. Their big goal is mosul, the Islamic State groups main stronghold in the country. But before advancing north, they must regain control of ramadi to cut the militants supply line from syria.
