We have just heard that the German Foreign minister and john kerry are meeting in vienna. The u. S. Has stonewalled so far. What can we expect from the weekend . Not much. The germans will be looking for some indication from the americans they understand how serious this issue is taken in germany, in particular, and perhaps also that the state department, the secretary of state will be able to give some indication there will not be retaliation from the american side. There have been fears expressed that the americans might reduce intelligence cooperation. That would be very bad for germany. Ironically enough, in view of what this dispute is all about, germany relies very heavily on the United States for intelligence cooperation. I think in vienna over the weekend we will hear words, hopefully expressions about how important the transatlantic cooperation continues to be. Clearly the german party is the one that is wrong. The u. S. Seems to be defiant. How fundamental are the differences here cap go differences here . The expulsion is so dramatic. And it is a cold war tactics between two countries that constantly repeat how important their alliances. There is a fundamental difference on this issue of espionage. If you look at the morning print editions of the Washington Times and u. S. Post, it it was frontpage news. But this story is competing with an incredibly big news agenda at the moment. Look at the International Crisis the Obama Administration is facing right now. You have the israelipalestinian violence. You have iraq and afghanistan in different ways looking at a breakup. All three of those crises have emerged in the last 4 to 6 weeks. On top of that you have longterm crises like the war in syria, the crisis in ukraine. Maybe this story has to get even bigger to fight for place in the public mind here in the u. S. It has been making headlines for a couple days here. We know the u. S. Secretary of state john kerry will be meeting with his german counterpart on sunday, face to face. Yeah, and i think on that level, it is clear this dramatic move by germany will make an impact. It will be absolutely wrong to underestimate how dramatic this move was. One analyst pointed out to me germany could very easily have expelled a much more junior intelligence official, but they chose to go for the station chief. That is absolutely a dramatic gesture, and one that is serving as the wakeup call it was intended to pay, i think. There is no way john kerry can ignore that this weekend. But no one should expect them to make any big promises. As we were just hearing from simon, there should not be any Great Expectations of this. Look how far apart they are in the overall attitude to intelligence. Intelligence services for the u. S. Are not simply about fighting terrorism. And tuesday, six some 600 rockets have been fired. Israel has intercepted most of those aimed at major cities. Our correspondent tania cramer is standing by in jerusalem. What is being said about these rockets being fired from lebanon . Because of tension, there has been occasional rocket fire coming from lebanon to israel. Lebanese forces have arrested two palestinianlebanese men on suspicion that they had fired rockets into the israeli territory, that they belong to hezbollah.
