We begin with germanys decision to expel a top u. S. Intelligence official. The foreign minister the move was necessary. Politicians here in berlin have been seething over alleged u. S. Spying, saying washington has never answered key questions. With two suspected journal german Double Agents discovered, the government apparently felt things had gone too far. The u. S. Embassy in berlin is at the center of a diplomatic scandal. Germanys foreign minister says the decision was the right one. He intends to discuss the matter with his u. S. Counterpart at an upcoming meeting on a rants Irans Nuclear program. We want to rebuild our partnership and our friendship on a foundation of honesty. We are prepared to do that. That will be my message to john kerry when i meet him on the weekend in vienna. The opposition wants germany to send a stronger message to the u. S. And respond with actions as well as words. It is not credible to be on one hand extremely angry about these spying cases, but on the other to be negotiating this free trade deal. But the government says the current Global Situation makes a functioning relationship between washington and berlin especially important. We would be fooling ourselves to think conflicts could be diffused and Solutions Found without close cooperation with the u. S. Despite the ongoing scandals, german and u. S. Intelligence Services Continue to work closely together. For more, lets talk to our political correspondent, simon young. We have just heard that the German Foreign minister and john kerry are meeting in vienna. The u. S. Has stonewalled so far. What can we expect from the weekend . Not much. The germans will be looking for some indication from the americans they understand how serious this issue is taken in germany, in particular, and perhaps also that the state department, the secretary of state will be able to give some indication there will not be retaliation from the american side. There have been fears expressed that the americans might reduce intelligence cooperation. That would be very bad for germany. Ironically enough, in view of what this dispute is all about, germany relies very heavily on the United States for intelligence cooperation. I think in vienna over the weekend we will hear words, hopefully expressions about how important the transatlantic cooperation continues to be. Clearly the german party is the one that is wrong. The u. S. Seems to be defiant. How fundamental are the differences here cap go differences here . The expulsion is so dramatic. And it is a cold war tactics between two countries that constantly repeat how important their alliances. There is a fundamental difference on this issue of espionage. President obama seven that big speech on the nsa back in january that the u. S. Will continue to spy, even unfriendly governments, where it thinks it is necessary. That is a crucial difference. At the end of the day, the bottom line is, partnership and the alliance between these key western countries remain strong and important. Simon young, thank you very much. Rebuilding trust between the allies certainly will not happen overnight. And losing the trust did not come quickly either. It was last summer when the first revolutions from Edward Snowden grabs public attention. Lets look back at how the scandal started. The National Security agency was propelled into the headlines when the story broke it was running massive surveillance programs to grab phone and Internet Data also in germany. Former nsa contractor Edward Snowden was the source. He later sought asylum in moscow. The u. S. Wants to try him on espionage charges. Although german politicians asked the u. S. Government for answers it is to waiting for, the matter was declared closed last year. But in october, it was revealed the nsa had tapped chancellor Angela Merkels phone. There were suspicions that the americans were running a listening post to monitor activities all over the German Government district. Ever since we began talking about the nsa, i have told the u. S. President at spine among friends is unacceptable. In march, looking into more allegations of spying in germany. And then the alleged bugging into Angela Merkels telephone. Now the row has escalated again. A german official has been arrested on suspicion of spying for the u. S. And there are suspicions that an employee of the Defense Ministry was also a u. S. Spy. As a response, germany has expelled the top u. S. Intelligence official in the country. Sense lets go to Richard Walker in washington. If you read the u. S. Papers, you will not hear a word about this there. Is this a nonstory in the United States . I think it is right to say it is a nonstory. If you look at the morning print editions of the Washington Times and u. S. Post, it it was frontpage news. But this story is competing with an incredibly big news agenda at the moment. Look at the International Crisis the Obama Administration is facing right now. You have the israelipalestinian violence. You have iraq and afghanistan in different ways looking at a breakup. All three of those crises have emerged in the last 4 to 6 weeks. On top of that you have longterm crises like the war in syria, the crisis in ukraine. Maybe this story has to get even bigger to fight for place in the public mind here in the u. S. It has been making headlines for a couple days here. We know the u. S. Secretary of state john kerry will be meeting with his german counterpart on sunday, face to face. Yeah, and i think on that level, it is clear this dramatic move by germany will make an impact. It will be absolutely wrong to underestimate how dramatic this move was. One analyst pointed out to me germany could very easily have expelled a much more junior intelligence official, but they chose to go for the station chief. That is absolutely a dramatic gesture, and one that is serving as the wakeup call it was intended to pay, i think. There is no way john kerry can ignore that this weekend. But no one should expect them to make any big promises. As we were just hearing from simon, there should not be any Great Expectations of this. Look how far apart they are in the overall attitude to intelligence. Intelligence services for the u. S. Are not simply about fighting terrorism. They are for understanding better the motivations of other states, and that includes france. All right, Richard Walker therefore is in washington. Thank you. To the middle east. Palestinian authorities in the gaza strip say more than 130 people have and killed by israeli air attacks. They have exchanged rocket attacks for five days now. Neither side appears ready to back down. Israels Prime Minister says a Ground Invasion remains possible. A rocket from neighboring lebanon hit israel on friday. More on that here. The rocket crashed down on israels road in the far north. It was launched from lebanon. Lebanese soldiers later found two rocket launchers and dismantled them. No one in the region was hurt, even after Israeli Military countered with artillery fire across the border. It is not clear to launch the rockets, but similar attacks in the past have been linked to al qaeda. The conflict is set to continue. The israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to press on with military operations in gaza, despite calls for a ceasefire. No International Pressure will prevent us from striking the terrorists. In gaza, the death toll continues to rise. Three people were killed when Israeli Forces bombed this apartment and apartment building. The situation is miserable. People are cautious because women, elderly, and children are being targeted. People are afraid to go out or gathering groups. As you can see, all of the shops are closed and everyone is staying home. Meanwhile, Palestinian Militants continued rocket attacks on israel. And tuesday, six some 600 rockets have been fired. Israel has intercepted most of those aimed at major cities. Our correspondent tania cramer is standing by in jerusalem. What is being said about these rockets being fired from lebanon . Because of tension, there has been occasional rocket fire coming from lebanon to israel. Lebanese forces have arrested two palestinianlebanese men on suspicion that they had fired rockets into the israeli territory, that they belong to hezbollah. It could be an attack in light of the ongoing operation in gaza. There is some talk that the u. S. Could step in and mediate here, but israels Prime Minister has said International Pressure will not change anything right now. Yeah, we understand the american president obama had called to offer a ceasefire, which would be based on the understandings from november 2012. At that time the secretary Billy Clinton had brokered an agreement with the egyptian leader mahmoud morsi. The new egyptian governor is more than in this case. But again, he is exploring all options to restore calm, that might include intensifying the u. S. Response. At this moment, we do not know how much diplomacy is going on behind closed doors. Both sides continue the fighting in no one is backing down. Tonya cramer on the story for us from jerusalem. Thank you very much. We are talking about Thomas Muller. He was born there. And our report looks at how locals plan to support the hometown hero. The bavarian town of pahl is usually a sleepy place, but that has all changed since the start of the football world cup. Here at the town hall, reporters turn up daily. All of them want to know more about pahls most famous inhabitant. After thomas scored about three goals, media interest increased massively. He is a fascinating person because he is so natural and authentic. In the village, we have taken it in our stride. Of course we are pleased, but we are pretty relaxed about the whole thing. Residents are extremely proud of Thomas Muller. The local bakery as a special item on display a pair of his old footballing boots donated by his family. As a child, he often came near to buy sweets. He was a lively, cheeky boy, and funny, just like he is now. He had a good sense of humor. But it was his talent that really stood out. It he learned to play football on this field and joined Bayern Munichs junior team at the age of just 10. Since then, he has come a long way. Here he is seen training with the National Team in brazil. They say that his success is well deserved. He has great instincts and he uses them. That is a rare quality. Most players are pushed into a routine, but thomas does not allow that, and that is a good thing. It is not just his sporting prowess that makes him popular. The smalltown boy has not let success go to his head. Though he has earned a fortune, people here say his feet remain firmly landed on the ground. He speaks just like us. He does not act like a renaldo or a beckham. Around here, and he is just like one of us. The world cup against argentina will be doubly exciting for residents of pahl because of their personal connection with Thomas Muller. I say Thomas Muller is going to shoot two goals for germany on sunday, and i am seldom wrong. If germany to become world cup champions, the quiet village of pahl, bavaria is likely to get louder for a while. They will not be playing that music. They might. It still works. Result fans of not quite recovered from their teams devastating 71 loss against germany in the semifinal. So, zulu are brazilians going to cheer for after their historic defeat against germany . I can only support germany. They kicked us out of the tournament, but they are still better than argentina. Next up, a bakery for a cup of coffee. Maybe the baker can tell us why brazilians are rooting for germany. Germany played the best football modern and wellorganized. I give germany 10 out of 10 points. They have a welldeserved run. Germany have the better team. It is now clear that support for germany is more than just a gut feeling. I would not go that far. I think the atmosphere is really very a subdued. There was a lot of emotion and anger and outrage poured out by people in the immediate aftermath of that semifinal defeat to germany. Now they have calmed down, gone back to everyday life, and really, they have really they are not that excited about the match tomorrow. It has been raining as well for the past 24 hours. It feels very, very dull and gray here. Everyone has taken off their yellow and green tshirts. Everyone in the bars and restaurants are back in their normal uniforms. The world cup hearty atmosphere is very hearty atmosphere is very much over. That is unfortunate. Brazil do have to play tomorrow. It would be nice if the fans would turn out to show support and gratitude to the team after a difficult world cup, but it remains to be seen if the people here are in the mood for that.
