We begin with breaking news about what looks like a new International Push to end the fighting in Eastern Ukraine. There are reports that ukrainian and Russian Foreign ministers will hold talks on wednesday here in berlin with their french and german counterparts. At least thats according to french diplomatic sources and has yet to be confirmed. This comes after Ukrainian Tanks and aircraft resume their assault on cities held by prorussian separatist. The number of civilian a number of civilian casualties have been reported. The violence continues to escalate in Eastern Ukraine. The shaky 10day truce has expired, and kiev has resumed military operations against prokremlin separatists. Russian president Vladimir Putin blames his ukrainian counterpart for the failure to extend the ceasefire. Unfortunately, president poroshenko decided to resume his military operation. We were not able i mean myself and my european colleagues we failed to convince him that the war is not the way to establish sustainable, solid, and lasting peace. He accuses the kiev government of hampering peace efforts. It counters that militants use the ceasefire as an opportunity to stock up on russian arms. The German Foreign minister has called on both sides to keep open communication channels. We must build on the limited contact, which has been established between the ukrainian and russian governments. If we can maintain and strengthen that, we can establish a shared Border Patrol which can prevent arms and fighters from advancing across the eastern ukrainian border. As military operations intensify, prospects for peace are fading. We turn now to our correspondent joining us from kiev. We are getting reports of civilian casualties. What are you hearing where you are . It is quite difficult to assess how many casualties there have really been in eastern parts of ukraine, but officials here in kiev say there must have been a lot of casualties. They say that this day has been the most successful way of the antiterror operation in Eastern Ukraine since it was taken in early april. They say they have regained control of a Border Patrol checkpoint at the border to russia. They have freed three settlements formerly held by prorussian rebels, and they say they have destroyed a rebel base next to the city of slovyansk. According to different reports, several hundred or even more than a thousand rebels were killed in the strike. Do we have any idea how long the offensive might last . Ukraines president , petro poroshenko, was very determined in his latenight televised speech yesterday. He said basically, he was still ready for peace and further negotiations, but, obviously, prorussian rebels did not comply with any of his demands, so now he was ready to attack and to free ukraine from prorussian rebels, so we are likely to see this antiterror operation to last as long as it takes. We have to leave it there. Thanks so very much for now. You are welcome. Sanctions against russia over its crane over its role in the ukraine crisis appear to be a success so far according to the International Monetary fund. The imf reports that growth in russia is slowing and that capital is exiting the country. As to the it adds the Chilling Effect it has had on investment could force moscow into isolation. The pressure on russia is getting higher, but some of its biggest trading partners in europe worry their business could be heard as well. Analysts predict the russian economy will expand by a tepid. 2 this year. The imf report puts the blame squarely on growing uncertainty and deterioration of confidence coinciding with the conflict in ukraine. It also prognosticate a deep recession of tensions continue. And ever tougher sanctions take their toll. The imf is only one source of pessimistic forecasts for russia. Fully half of all german firms doing business there now predict recession. That forecast comes from a survey done by a german business association. Exports to russia were down sharply in the first four months of 2014. A breakdown of the figures shows german trade with russia reached a volume of nearly 77 billion euros in 2013. Analysts estimate trade with russia secures some 350,000 jobs, and german firms have invested some 16 billion euros in russia. The imf also points out the ukraine crisis has puts the ruble under pressure, with the result the capital is being transferred out of russia. An estimated 100 billion worth in this year alone. Israel has launched air strikes on hamas in the gaza strip. The attacks come after the bodies of three missing israeli teenagers were found in the west bank. Thomas is denying any involvement hamas is denying any involvement. The boys families have been thanking wellwishers for their condolences. Thousands converged on the central israeli town. The focal point of a nationwide outpouring of mourning. A Burial Service for the three murdered teenagers. The people of israel have suffered a great trauma. Since thursday of two weeks ago, we have been living as if we are in a movie, but it has a terrible ending. I no longer have a brother. But beyond their grieving, everyone is also wondering what israel wilderness. The security cabinet was scheduled to meet after the burial to formulate a response. Some want to see a massive strike in gaza or the west bank, but others favor a more restrained reaction. One way or the other, israel has placed the blame with radical,s islamists radical hamas islamists. Both suspects are hamas operatives who have served time for carrying out violent acts of terrorism. This is the reality we face. These people they have a culture of kidnapping. Israeli Security Officials suspected hamas soon after the boys went missing. Once their bodies were discovered, the army stepped up military operations in the west bank. The homes of the two main suspects are largely destroyed. The Israeli Air Force pounded gaza with airstrikes. Palestinians in the west bank had their own mourning to do. A young man was shot by israeli forces. Concern is mounting that this would mount the beginning of another bloody chapter in the conflict between israel and the palestinians. Our correspondent is on the ground in israel and joins us for the very latest. We have already seen a retaliatory strike from israel. Can we expect more in the coming days in gaza . Well, i mean, there seem to be at the moment, as you said in the report, two different lines of thought here on the political level. Those who called for a restrained or measured response we do not hear much from them and those who call for a harsh, hardline response. Mr. Netanyahu went into the Cabinet Meeting tonight saying he has three missions he is aiming for. One is to find the kidnappers, to catch the kidnappers, and those who helped them. Second, to weaken hamas in the west bank and also to operate against hamas in gaza and also to expand if necessary. Some analysts believe i mean, we have heard the statements before that israel is not really interested in further escalating. It is already in escalated situation right now. For israel, it is important to create deterrence against hamas, and that is what they need, to feel they are continuing to do so, but what happens in the next coming hours and coming days is very important. What can we expect in terms of the palestinian unity government . This is a big question because there is a lot of pressure on the palestinian president to stop this reconciliation process. Israel has said it time and time again they called after peace talks a couple of months ago, and they have said they cannot sit with hamas and continue this reconciliation process. But the palestinian street is saying towards that. There is also palestinian tensions and also, it is a difficult situation for the civilian population right now. Thank you very much. Sarkozy has faced several legal battles since he left office in 2012. Allegations include accepting donations from former libyan dictator moammar gadhafi. He is yet to be convicted of a crime, but analysts say images of the former president in Police Custody could cost him his political future. This is a singular event. The very idea that he might have to spend a night in the cell is extremely demeaning. Such things happen too many people, but not to someone who wants to leave the country. Political opponents have seized on the scandal. The far right National Front leader said the case demonstrated a complete failure of the french political system. The use of combat drones is a controversial one in germany, and the defense minister has long and hard about whether the German Military should be equipped with the unmanned aircraft. At the moment, the government is leasing unarmed drones from israel for aerial surveillance. The defense minister has spoken out in favor of using armed drones. In a newspaper interview, she suggested the government would lease newer models that could be armed on a casebycase basis and only with the approval of the german parliament. Joining us for more on this is our political correspondent. First of all, fill us in if you could on this debate in germany. It is a very emotional and divisive one. Yes, this ethical debate on whether drones should be used in combat has been raging here in germany for a couple of years now. Most importantly at the moment, it is dividing the grand coalition between Angela Merkels conservative christian democrats and the social democrats who do not all agree that this should be the way forward. Proponents say it would make combat much safer for troops. It would provide safety on the ground. Opponents say it would push germany further towards what could essentially become a kind of technological warfare far removed from human decisions where casualties, of course, would be a big issue. In this traditionally pacifist nature nation, this could be a step towards germany changing its military policy that prevents it from being involved in any Foreign Military intervention. You think that is the case . We might, as time goes on, see it as that in hindsight, but most important way, this is the first time the German Defense minister has come out and position herself in this whole debate, and it will certainly provide an essential step in making german troops more flexible, more able to respond to the needs of international missions, if the german bundestag should vote in favor of engaging in these. Incidentally, tomorrow, german chancellor Angela Merkel will be meeting with the nato secretary, and of course, germanys response capabilities look set to be on the agenda as well. The debate over armed runs continuing. As ever, thanks very much. The first session of the European Parliament was marked by discord following the election of germanys Martin Scholz as head of the European Parliament. He lost in european elections, but was returned to his post by european deputies. Now he faces a tough task of uniting an increasingly factitious group of lawmakers. Parliamentary elections in may saw the rise of the far right and eurosceptic parties who want to dismantle business as usual in brussels. The first session of European Parliament was marked by a symbolic show of dissent. Eurosceptic meps turned their backs as the european anthem was played during the opening ceremony. Many were angry at what they called a done deal the reelection of the parliaments president. The socialist is the first mep to fill the post for a second consecutive term. Nobody in the European Union can ignore this parliament. This unique institution. Either on the National Level or on the european level. We are a source of democratic legitimacy in europe. Three political groupings in the European Parliament put forward their own candidates, including the far left. We want to make the point that young peoples futures are being stolen by the way the politics have worked until now. They must be engaged, must be given a real opportunity to shape their own lives. The second term came about through a backroom deal with the european peoples party, the biggest grouping in parliament. They agreed not to oppose his candidacy in exchange for other top eu positions. The European Court of human rights has upheld a ban on the muslim burqa in france. The court said france had acted legitimately an outline in outlining the full face veil in the name of social cohesion. A young french woman challenged the law, which first came into effect in april 2011. She argued the legislation restricted her religious freedom. Women who wear the full face burqa in public in france face fines of 150 euros. To turkey now, and the Prime Minister has confirmed he will run for president. His candidacy has been rumored for months and was announced at a rally in ankara. He is tipped to win the august poll, despite months of protest against his government and a string of corruption allegations. The turkish presidency is largely a symbolic one, but erdogan is trying to change the constitution to give the resident more powers. The incumbent says he will not seek reelection. Tens of thousands of protesters have marched to hong kong to call for greater democracy in the southern chinese financial center. The annual july 1 march marking the handover of the british colony to beijing in 1997 was one of the biggest ever. The mostly peaceful crowds carried banners and posters calling for more autonomy and for political tolerance. There were isolated unrest as some demonstrators tried to break through police barricades. Many protesters staged an overnight sit in to draw attention to beijings one country, two systems policy. Ok, some world cup news, and argentina has eaten switzerland 10 to reach the quarterfinals. Beaten switzerland to reach the quarterfinals. It was dramatic. The turning point came after 118 minutes when one player cut through the swiss defense. Switzerland pressed on for an equalizer in the dying seconds, but the argentinians hung on for the win. They will face belgium or the United States who play later today. Our Sports Correspondent back with us in the studio this evening. Another very tight match right down to the wire. Its the same as we have seen in all the matches so far. Another tight one. Switzerland came out with a game plan. They have a very experienced coach. He has won the Champions League twice. He set them out with a game plan to close argentina down to defend, and they put three men around messy every time he had the ball, and it worked for 117 minutes. The only problem with a strategy like that is if you can see the goal, its all out the window, and that is what happened. Switzerland had to throw people forward. It was a great display up until that point, but it was one brilliant run. He is obviously amazing and a time he gets the ball. Can he win this for argentina, though . Everyone keeps saying he cannot win the world cup on his own, but he is doing it so far, so why not . He keeps winning the games and supplying either the perfect pass or getting the goal himself when it comes down to those crucial moments. Do not forget argentina are getting a bit of a hard time because they are not playing that well, but they have players right across the pitch getting better. They struggle against switzerland, but they are improving, and he has shown time and time again that he can make the difference. It eats on form and argentina get better, they are only two games away from reaching the final. A lot of people wondering if argentina could win this cup. Stay with us. Well be right back. After that game yesterday, germany are through as well after overcoming up. 21, but it certainly was not easy. It was not. The game remained scoreless, but germany broke the deadlock. It took 92 minutes to finally put an end to germanys misery. Back home, the fans went wild, mostly because until then, there had not been much to cheer about. Sloppy soccer, but a fantastic only goalie. I was impressed with his performance as goalie. Cheerio were aggressive from the start. Time and again, they outplayed the German Defense. Germany was beaten, and the desert foxes almost went in front. In the second half, algeria tired, but Thomas Mueller could not make the advantage pay. In the second minute of extra time, germany finally had the lead. It was 20 in the 119th minute, but the game was not over. Germany hung on for the narrow victory. We are back with jason in the studio. Just like argentina today, germany scraping through. Are they still title contenders . I think they are. I think anyone in the competition at this stage is a title contender. It was the same with the netherlands, brazil, argentina. All these top teams are struggling because they are playing against teams coming out with a strategy to defend. Its very hard to break these teams down. All the teams left in the world cup at this stage are good, solid teams, and they are struggling. I think youll see more open football in the next round, and germany will have to know that they have to up their game. The coach has already said french forwards are much more dangerous than the algerians, so they have to really be on their guard, but he also said even teams that when the world cup often had bad games. That was a bad game for germany yesterday. The important thing is that they won. They are through, and they can look forward to the next round. The victim is supposed to get under way in a matter of minutes belgium versus the United States. What do you think the outcome will be . The warning i have a favorite in this one. All the other games have been tight so far, so i assume this will be tight. Belgium, the dark course of the tournament, still have not really turned on the style yet. They have played well, but people are still waiting to see whether they can live up to high expectations. The u. S. Affected to play expected to play very hard, robust style. They did not play well against germany, but they should play well against elgin. So far, all of the Group Winners have run all of the Group Winners have won so far, and belgium are the Group Winners. Thank you for joining us, jason, and thank you for p. M. With us here at the journal thank you for being with us here at the journal. We will see you next time.
