In 2013, the government put up a statue to a serb ruler known for having subjugated the albanians. One night, a group of Ethnic Albanians tried to topple him from his pedestal. They did not succeed. But the statute did suffer damage. An Expert Commission has found it was put up illegally and it is slated for removal. In the meantime, police stand guard. If she expected this to have a major impact, she miscalculated. In todays europe, destroying things is not a virtue. The political organizations in macedonia have not yet outgrown these radical and extremist methods. The controversy has fractured the governing coalition. But the construction goes on. Nobody at the agencies involved is willing to give an interview. The Culture Ministry has put 500 Million Euros into the project so far. Macedonian art historian believes the project not only sidelines the Ethnic Albanians, but the population as a whole as well. The project was meant to show the macedonians are a european people, the people of culture. In fact, the buildings are rather dubious. Not just architecturally. The powers that be are using them as an excuse to divert attention from the important problems like unemployment and corruption. The art historian says if the projects initiators wanted to build on the authentic roots, they should have restored old town. The majority of the residents are muslim albanians. When spains late dictator died almost 40 years ago, the country made a dramatic switch to democracy. Most spaniards quickly banished any memory of the dictatorship years. Amnesty was rented to his henchmen to make the transition to democracy as peaceful as possible. To this day, no Spanish Court has dealt with the crimes from the franco regime. Many of those who carried out orders of torture and murder under the spanish dictator are still friedman today. The victims never got justice. That could change soon with help from overseas.
