Hotlycontested president ial race. Turnout was high in an election which pitted incumbent who who kenyatta against his old rival, lila odinga. We will meet a female comedian from gaza who is becoming an inspiration to young women. I am sarah kelly. Welcome to the program. It is great to have you with us. South african president jacob zuma has again survived a vote of noconfidence. The motion and parliament followed a string of corruption scandals. Zuma has faced several similar votes in the past, but this was different. This was a secret ballot, making it more likely that lawmakers from the ruling and it anc party might vote against him. Some did, but not enough to remove the president. And therefore, the motion of noconfidence in the president is accordingly negative. Critics and the anc reporter in a surprise move, a secret ballot. The opposition hoped that would boost the antizuma vote within his own anc, that that was not enough. Just a few minutes after his victory, supporters cheered their president. Mired in corruption scandals, the veteran leader had once again beaten off his opponents. The anc is there. It is powerful. It is difficult to defeat the anc. Reporter outside parliament, the opposition insisted the vote is damaging to zuma because some of his own anc members voted against him. Do the right thing and resign. He clearly has not got the mandate of his party. People today voted to say zuma must go. Reporter earlier in the day, thousands of protesters had marched on parliament to demand zumas removal. He may have won the vote, but his victory will do little to boost his popularity on the streets. Sarah for more, we are joined by christine, who has been following the story for us. Christine, how is this being seen . Obviously, this is a victory for the anc and jacob zuma. Does it mean they fully support him, though . Christine no, it does not mean that. We saw today parliament was anc defending the anc. Everybody who stood up on the part of the anc to take part in the debate nobody defended jacob zuma. Everybody defended the party. You could tell this was about the party. They could not come out and accept an Opposition Movement to oust their leader. That was political suicide. That is never going to happen on the part of anc mps. We heard a party saying to the public of south africa, we have to save the party. That means we have to protect this guy. Sarah why is the opposition also seeing this as a victory . How is that possible . Christine we went to secret ballot. Some anc members voted in favor of ousting the president. Some were saying this would not happen if this was an open ballot, so we have a small victory. They are looking at this uncertain number it is a secret ballot and saying, we managed to convince some anc mps to vote with their conscious and do the right thing vote with their conscience and dodo the right thing. They will go to the public and say some mps were brave enough to vote against the president. Do the same in the general election. Sarah talk strategy. How do they capitalize on that backing from the public . We have seen protests in the streets, in cape town, pretoria, johannesburg. How high is public anger against zuma . Is it concentrated in cities, or more broad . Christstine i listen to local radio stations after this outcome. South africans found him, furious, enraged. On social media, people were angry at the anc for once again protecting the president. You know where it was quiet . The rural areas. This is where the anc support base lies. In those places, people are happy about the outcome of this motion of noconfidence. In the urban areas, you will always have the numbers. You will always have the people screaming and saying the president needs to step down. Where it matters most for the anc, rural areas, you are not seeing that. The opposition has a lot of work to do, to convince people in rural areas that this is not the party for you, come the 2019 electionon. The anc goes to an elective conference in december, less than three months. They are going to choose a new president. Zuma is not coming back in terms of anc leadership. It will be interesting to see what happens in december. Sarah the most important the fact that there are elections in two years. We will see how these dynamics affect that. Christine joining us in the studio. Thank you. Meantime, votes are being counted in kenyas general elections, including a neck and neck race for the presidency. Turnout was high for the vote, which pits incumbent president Uhuru Kenyatta against Opposition Leader raila odinga. It i is a battle between lononge political rivals. Reporter here in the city, many waited hours for a chance to cast t their ballolot. And in this opposition ststronghold, they will likely vote for change. Despite e steady Economic Growth under president kenyatta, 40 of kenyans remain unemployed. Foodod prices are on the rise. E. Many blame the government for failing to anticipate shortages resulting from an ongoing drought. Many people here are supporting raila odinga. He and his National Super alliance have pledged to stamp out corruption and improve the lives of kenyas poor. They are expecting it to be peaceful. We want our candidate to win. We want as president raila odinga. Reporter a stalwart of the opposition, odinga is making his fourth and likely final bid for the presidency, in a boat that could play out along ethnic lines. He has shown an ability to appeal beyond his own rural community. But it might not be enough to defeat archrival Uhuru Kenyatta, the son of the countrys first president. He has the backing of kenyas cuckoo your of a kenyan ethnic group that has overseen infrastructure developments. The economy continues to improve. After casting his ballot, he urged all the candidates to accept the results peacefully. President kenyatta my competitors, as i have always said, in the event they lose, except the will of the people. I will accept the will of the people. Let us come together, pull this country gather, and move forward. Reporter for his part, odinga has signaled he will accept the results as well. Odinga i will say also that in the unlikely event that i lose fairly, i will definitely accept the will of the people. Reporter but after narrowly losing the last two elections and facing a final chance to defeat his archrival, a loss for odinga would prove difficult to swallow. Sarah joining us now by phone is the chief observer of the European Union Election Observation mission to kenyan elections. Thank you for joining us this evening. What has been your overall impression today . Was this vote free and fair . Guest well, you are asking me to protect the future, and i cannot do that. Actually, our mission is a very comprehensive one. We have 130 observers, many of whom are still in the process of observing the counting of votes, ththe of votes. And it is s very importantnt. What i i have seen today is that people got up at the crack of dawn to cast their votes. The research amounts of people that had to stand in line for hours and hours. The fact that they stayed and were patient, quietly waiting for their moment to vote, i think shows how dedicated people are in kenya to really express their will about the future of kenya, and how much they would like these elections to be credible and transparent. Sarah it is great to see so many people getting involved in this process, this democracy. Even the irregularities of the past, what lessons would you say have been learned . Do you think the right steps are being executed to prevent them in this particular vote . Guest what is clear is that enormous amounts of energy and effort have gone into healing the wounds from the past. I have spoken to a number of very competitive leaders, who have made years and years of effort toward peace and conflict resolution. The same goes for vibrant Civil Society organizations that are bringing people together. That is very important. Of course, elections are also a moment to determine the fate of the nation. And unfortunately, trust is still not very widely available. Mistrust is very much an element of Kenyan Society today. What i can only say that i hope is that a credible protest could contribute to overcoming the wounds of the past and building up that trust in a more democratic future for kenyans. Sarah the chief of the u. N. Mission to the kenyan elections. We thank you for telling us about the important work you are doing in the wake of the results of that general election. In other news, u. S. President donald trump has issued a warning to north korea. He made the statement during a briefing at his golf club in new jersey, where he is on what the white house is calling a working vacation. It comes a day after pyongyang issued its own threat, reacting to new u. N. Sanctions against the regime. This was trumps response. President trump north korea best not make any more threats to the united states. They will bebe met with fire and fury, like the world has never seen. He has been very threatening, beyond a normal statemenent. And asas i said, they will be mt with fire, fury, and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before. Thank you. Sarah that was donald trump addressing north korea a short while ago. Meantime, a leaked government report says that americans are already feeling the negative effects of climate change. That is no surprise to climate campaigner al gore. He has released a new documentary to go after politicians who dismiss climate change, including the one in the white house. Have a look. This time lastt year, the u. Was in the middle of its election campaign. Trump it is supposed to be 70 degrees today. It is freezing herere. Speaking of Global Warming, we need some Global Warming it is freezing reporter while the electn campaign raged on, former Vice President al gore spoke to climate experts and documented the effects of, change around the world melting glaciers, floods, and hurricanes, to name a few. In 2015, he was present at the settlement of the paris climate agreement. Less than two years later, trump withdrew the u. S. From the same deal. Gore the majority of Republican Voters in the u. S. Think we should have stayed in the paris agreement. A plurality of Trump Supporters thought we should have stayed in the paris agreement. So he has decided to just do the bidding of the large carbon polluters, who are important to him for r various reasons. Anand i cannot i thougught te was a good chance he would come to his senses, but i was wrong. Bettina in his documentary, al gore shows what Technical Solutions are available on a global scale. Even now, he still belieieves glglal warning couould be stopo. The fact the u. S. Government is still keeping its latest climate report under wraps is a scandal. Gore it will be hidden and varied by politicians w who are taking lots of money from the carbon polluters, whoo feel that the truth about the Climate Crisis is still inconvenient for them. It is unprecedented. Bettina in the meantime, al goress documentary acts as a reminder of these uncomfortable truths. Gore this is our home. Sarah you are watching tw news. Next, a feminist comic from gaza. Dont go away. The Dw Media Center. See it live. Find i it again. Hear more of it. Discover i video and audio, podcasts, and leg which courses. In the Dw Media Center at media center mediacenter. Dw. Com. Sarah welcome back. A quick reminder of our top story. South africas president , jacob zuma, has survived a noconfidence motion in parliament. Summa faced a secret ballot after a string of corruption scandals. Dozens of his colleagues in the ruling anc party did vote against him, but the motion still failed by more than 20 votes. In gaza, one teenager is defying norms by making it a busisinessf mamaking people laugh. She is pt of a group that uses comedy routines to take men to task over issues like Sexual Harassment area as the only enough comedian in a maledominated society, she faces tough challenges. Reporter hey, sexy. Did i just hear you right . Did you just stupidly catcall me . Reporter these guys in gaza have never seen anything like this in real life. That is too much. She just beat up two men. What is she, rambo or something . I dont like that she grabbed the men, but a woman also needs to defend her honor. Reporter if just one of the men watching things about the traditional roles of men and women in this islamic, macho society, they have achieved their goal. The comedy group calls itself [indiscernible] which roughly translates to hey , man, cut the craft crap. we are criticizing society, but not giving answers. We are showing the viewer that something is wrong. Think about this. Reporter three women approach her. They know all her clips and are huge fans. She wears jeans and no headscarf, an exception in gaza, which is run by hamas and dominated by men. Her video claims to show everyday situations here in a comic life light. In this one, she plays a bride who is literally being measured upup by her future motherinla, like a cow at market. Her hair and eyes are checked for quality. The role of the motherinlaw has to be p played by a male colleague. She is the only woman in gaza involved in making the skits, which always end with a small feminist rebellion. Here, while the firmness of herr butt is being measured, the bridetobe fights back. Listen up. I dont want to get married. Get lost, motherinlaw, and take your son with you. Go get lost reporter she shows us that a woman can have a strong personality, and needs to defend herself. The other family is more skeptical. Other fan is more skeptical. I do not think we can change society and suddenly leave the house without a scarf. Reporter the actress had an experience similar to the one shown in the skit. During a break in filming, the woman, who studied law, tells us the details. The man in question was a distant relative of her mother. He proposed, but with conditions. A guy wanted to marry me but said i had to give up acting. He wanted me to forget everything that is important to me. He wanted me to dress and behave like all the other women do in our society. I rejected his proposal. I did not find the got i did not find the guy that bad, but i support all she wants to achieve. Reporter the group has to make some compromises. She can never be the only woman on set. Her mother always has to accompany her. Gaza is a world strictly controlled by hamas, and she often has to deal with angry criticism, and even threats. In this clip, she plays a traffic officer. In reality, a woman doing this is inconceivable. The drivers all of the men sit and stare like she e is from another planet. As a woman, of course, she has nono authority. [speaking arabic] reporter it seems like a harmless video, but while her male colleagues were applauded for their performance, she was criticized and insulted on social media for hers. The main thread a respectable woman does not do these kinds of things. Even some of her relatives have distanced themselves. People said a lot of horrible things about me that i was a disgrace, for example. It hit me hard. I said to my mother, i give up. I dont want to leave the house anymore. But my mother has always picked me up and encouraged me. Reporter instead of giving up acting and waiting for a prospective husband to get her a ring, she and her mother and friends buy her own jewelry. She wants to have a career, to become a famous actress in the arab world, one who uses humor to change society. It is a dream, and one that she refuses to let die, despite the harsh realities of life in gaza. Sarah the issue of gender is not only being addressed in gaza. There is uproar at google headquarters in Silicon Valley. This is really not funny. Helena humphrey has the story. Helena indeed it is not. One engineer at the search giant google has been fired after releasing a manifesto against the genderer food gender diversity programs. The memo states that biological differences were to blame for the fact there are fewer women in tech jobs and leadership positions. The ceo said in a statement that while he supports freedom of expression, the memo crossed the line in terms of harmful stereotypes. The engigineer behind the documt says he will be pursuing legal action against the Silicon Valley firm. One thing in that memo was true, though. Not many of the tech jobs at Silicon Valley firms go to women. Thats take a look at the numbers now. At google, just 19 of tech posts are occupied by women. Ebay has the greatest share among big tech firms. There, 24 of technical jobs, 43 in all positions. But social media platform twitter has a paltry 15 share of programming work for women. Lets bring in our financiall correspondent on wall street. How is that google controversy going down where you are . Jens well, there is quite some discussion. First of all, the firing of the person, and now the discussion over here starts, what happens to freedom of speech, if google might be filing something in this respect. It is not news that is stock moving at this point. Tech ceo had a pretty good reading. He said the problem is not the biology of the employees. The problem is the biologys of the mentors. Meaning that a lot of the higherranked engineers are male and they tend to hire and promote their group. That is probably where a lot of the problems lie not just in the tech industry, but in other areas as well. Helena talking about other areas, what about the trading for itself . Is there a gender balance . Jens not really. If i look around here on the floor, we have a good 500 people on the floor, and maybe a handful of women. Maybe five woman or so. Not many. This is the trading floor. If you look at the broader financial industry, and Financial Advisors, only 18 of Financial Advisors in the u. S. Are female, and they only get about half what men earn. That is another problem. I talked to a lot of successful women on wall street. They are saying it is not that difficult to get an entry job, that when it comes to promotion, that is a whole different story, and there is no real equality at this point. Buddies still like to hire and promote each other. It will take a long time to change that in a broader wall street sense. Sarah jens in new york. Thank you very much. President ial visits are always destructive. Security is paramount. But what if the leader of the free world pitches up next year airport for 17 days . That is exactly what the u. S. President is doing right now, holidaying in new jersey. For anyone in the vicinity, it means they wont be taking off from their local airport while trump was in town. He is grounded. He owns an airport which falls within a 10 mile radius of Donald Trumps private golf club. No planes can take off or land during trumps trip. The shortterm Economic Impact on us is significant. It is tens of thousands of dollars in current revenue that we lose. Reporter in florida, lantana airport has to shut down when the president visits maralago, 25 days so far this year. The forced closures impact local businesses. We have customers that, their first question when the call is, am i even going to be able to train their with President Trump coming down so much question mark we have customers going elsewhere or not even starting with us because they are nervous about President Trump coming in. Daniel all president s go on holiday, but on his 45th, donald trump is ahead of his predecessor. The cost of the taxpayer, more than 50 million. Every visit usually requires local airports to close. It may be equal treatment, but that provides no consolation to the locals losing out when trump comes their way. Sarah that is the latest from the business desk. Sarah thank you very much. We have time for a quick reminder of the top story we have been following. South african president jacob zuma has survived a noconfidence motion in parliament.
