Air forces launched operation gomorrah, bombing the city for a week. Their aim, to destroy hamburg, demoralize german civilians, and cripple the nazis. Target is the church of Saint Nicholas, the tallest tower in the city. Changed themorrah face of hamburg forever. Tens of thousands of people died. Countless others were scarred for life. Later, Saint Nicholas still stands in ruins. It has been left this way as a memorial to the bombing and a reminder of the firestorm that swept hamburg from july 24 until august 3, 1943. How long can i wore last when it is already over a war last when it is already over . She was 18 years old when the bomb fell. She came away severely injured. Her mother and brother were killed. Its the first time she has come to see the church. Able to say to be this today, she says, to know that im not alone. When july comes every year, its not easy for me. Helge had lead a fulfilling adult life despite her early trauma. A fulfilling adult life despite her early trauma. But the horrors of her youth are more and more present in her mind. From the Observation Tower of Saint Nicholas, every view of the city is different from when helga was a child. It is a glimpse into the destructive power of war. It is the City District she lived in until the raid. She says, the air raid warden came and asked, who did we have here . Because i was traveling so much. My mother said, this is our he lga. This is the last thing i heard my mother say. Operation gomorrah left at least 35,000 people dead. Most were women and children. Many burned to death in their homes or the streets. Others suffocated in the air raid shelters. A dry spell before the bombing had turned hamburg to a tinderbox. The firestorm ripped through the city at hurricane speed. When the smoke cleared this is what was left of the apartment building. Today, newer buildings have taken its place. The once lively neighborhoods were wiped out. Today rows of glasswalled Office Buildings stretch on here, block after block. Hamburg remains one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The firestorm plays a central. Art of his Family History hisemembers that grandmothers memories loomed large at family gettogethers. Whether it was christmas or easter, he says, the story of the bombings was told time and time again. Researchers have shown the wartime trauma can be passed down through generations, even to the grandchildren of survivors. Participated as a study in the subject. Archive. Us to the photos and documents tell the story of a neighborhood changed forever. Helga is one of the volunteers who helps run the archive. She was working in air defense when the allies flew in. That saved her life. All her neighbors died in air raid shelters. Helga was 16 years old. A photo of the Appliance Store where she worked as a teenager reminds her of what once was. After the war, the store was gone. Only in the past few years has she been able to speak about her experiences. Says. Lucky, she i went and stood at the entrance of the building. I was looking for my parents. I was trying to get home, but it was not possible. The people on the street were falling over. They breathed in the hot air and they were dead. These days, it is hard to believe. There were others who just got sucked into the air. Some of the streets were paved with asphalt. Others were still stone. On the asphalt streets, the asphalt boiled. The people who walked into a died a miserable death. Died a miserable death. You could not get them out because you could not go in and help them. They died wretched deaths and in theling asphalt boiling asphalt. These are the things that imagined. Happened. You cant imagine. Before, and after. These are the streets helga grew up on. A journey through time. With hisr was grandmother when the bomb struck. His grandmother wrote an account of the event shortly before she died. We were trapped in the apartment, she writes. I was terrified my children and i might be burned alive. The wholeather saved family from the burning building. He tied to get the bed sheets and lower them down three stories from their apartment window. If it were not for what they did, he would never have been born. His mother still admires her fathers courage. She calls him a hero. Passing the tower of Saint Nicholas once again, we drive to the district. Were the allies right to bomb . It is a question that he and his generation ponders. He tells us he is not glad that hamburg was carpet bombed, but he is glad the allies went to war against hitler and that they won the war, even at such a high cost. Otherwise, he says, he would have grown up under a dictatorship. We turn onto the street where it all happened. Kindd not suffer the same of damage, but empty spaces still testify to the war. It used to be buildings here, she tells them. We used to come down this way when we were kids. I was just them, but i remember but i remember, clearly. The bombardment scarred the psyches of even the youngest survivors. Until a few years ago, the bombing was a taboo subject. Germans accepted that their country was to blame for the war. The suffering of german civilians was not discussed openly. That is one reason it has been so hard for people to cope with the past and overcome their trauma. His mother said she still afraid of fire and would never consider moving into the top floor of an apartment building. A few floors up, maybe, but no higher. It was horrifying looking down below, his grandmother wrote. The air was filled with phosphorus and smoke. His grandmother did not return until shortly before she died. She wanted to show her grandson the street where it all happened. Many survivors feel the need to share their experiences. Helga is one of them. Back at Saint Nicholas church, an exhibition is set to open in the basement vault. The architects family also lived through the firestorm. He shows her the development of the project. Is where the exhibit will be, he says. The concept is based around the story of the church itself. Saint nicholass history is closely tied to the history of the city. Everything the church suffered through, hamburg suffered through as well. He belongs to an association of Saint Nicholas patrons. The group hopes young people will visit the exhibition. Films, photos, and personal belongings from survivors such as letters and clothing help bring the story to life. An excellentit is idea. She says what is most important is that this sort of violence never happens again. During her visit, but time or place the bells just for her the chimer plays the bells just for her. After the air raid, she says, i was in a visitor hospital with 12 beds. There was no one left to visit me.
