It has been tumultuous 24 hours here at the opening of the democratic natatnal convenention in philadelphia. The convention began one day after Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman schultz resigned following the release of nearly 20,000 emails revealing how the Democratic Party favored Hillary Clinton and worked behind the scenes to discredit and defeat Bernie Sanders. Before the convention began , sanders addressed his 1900 delegates. Was there. Now senator sanders we have got to defeat donald trump. We have got to elect Hillary Clinton and tim kaine. [booing] senator sanders brothers and ,isters, brothers and sisters this is the real world that we live in. Trump is a bully and a demagogue. Trump has made bigotry and hatred the cornerstone of his campaign. Campaign, he has insulted mexicans and latinos, he has insulted muslimsms, he hs insulted women and africican americans. [booing] hillary [booing] [chanting] we are going to fight. We are going to fight for Bernie Sanders. Bernie sanders is the only one with integrity. We are going to fight this week. We are going to fight the tpp. Delegate foronal bernie from the great state of texas. I love bernie, but the problem is, weve all seen what happened this morning. Clinton is slipping behind trump. Im scared for my Civil Liberties. I carry the constitution around with me. Im scared donald trump is going to win now and now that t clintn is sagging behind trump, the most misogynistic, racist person republicans of ever nominated, i dont know how else to say it. Our democracy is in danger if trump becomes president. Im going to vote for clintotonf she is the nominee. Bernie beats trump. Everyone knows this. I dont understand why it has to be like this. Im a bernie delegate from new jersey. Im proud to be here to represent the agenda bernie has been pushing for the last year. The thing that struck me the most is that when he said we have set the agenda for the future in america. You think about the young people who have supportrted bernies campaign. We need to have a vision that goes well beyond the president ial election. That is what excites me the most. It pains me when bernie asks us to support Hillary Clinton, im sure it broke his heart as well. Hillary is the perfect candidate for the democracy that we have an bernie candy bernie is the perfect candidate for the democracy we want. Im from the state of washington and im a bernie delegate. I was on a Platform Drafting Committee and the p platform commmmittee that voted in orlan. Will you be voting for Hillary Clinton . Right now, i came as a delegate and i earned a lot of votes to represent bernies values and im here to represent those values on the p platform d also from the state of washington. We were 84 bernie sananders. They asked me to represent their voice and that is what im doing. As voting, i have not made that decision. It is heartbroken. It is not just about politics. Yes, it is political, but there is a feeling, a movement, inspiration that has beenn created. How do you change that and go for the person that you dont think would make the best president . Yes, we hear the lesser of two evils. It is a set day for many of us. Amy once the Democratic Convention began, supporters of sanders repeatedly broke into chants supporting bernie everytime Hillary Clinton was named. During his speech to the Convention Sanders again urged his supporters to back Hillary Clinton in november. Senator sanders i have known Hillary Clinton for 25 years. I remember her, as you do, as a great first lady who broke precedent in terms of the role that i firstst lady was supposed to play. She helped lead the fight for universal health care. Her in the United States senate and i know her as a fierce advocate for the rights of children, for women, and for the disabled. Clinton will make an outstanding president and i am proud to stand with her tonight. Thank you all very much. Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren also spoke on the Opening Night of the dnc. She accused repupublican nominee donald trump of fanning the flames of fear and hatred. Senator warren we are here tonight because america faces a choice, the choice of a new president. On one side is a man who inherited a fortune from his father and kept it going by cheating people, by skipping out on debts. And man who has never sacrificed anything for anyone. Himselfo cares only for , every minute of every day. On the other side is one ofof te smartest, toughest, most tenacious people on this planet. A woman who fights for children, for women, for health care, for huhuman rights. A woman who fights for all of us and who is Strong Enough to win those fights. We are here todaday because our choice is Hillary Clinton. Im m with hillary. Im with hillary. Amy First Lady Michelle Obama also spoke and gave one of the most impassioned speeches of the evenng. Mrs. Obama i wake up every morning in a house that was and i watch my two beautiful, intelligent, black young women playing with their dogs on the white house lawn. And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all of our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States. [loud cheering] , dontama so, look, so let anyone ever tell you that this country is not great, that somehow we need to make it great again, because this right now is the greatest country on earth. [loud cheering] mrs. Obama and as my daughters prepare to set out into the world, i want a leader who is worthy of that truth, a leader worthy of my girls promise, and all her kids promise, a leader guided every day by the love and hope and impossibly big dreams that we all have for our children. First Lady Michelle obama. In a minute, we will be joined by two guests. , from berkeley, california robert reich, former labor , secretary under president clinton and professor at the university of california, berkeley. He was a Bernie Sanders supporter. Hedges, aia, chris pulitzerprize winning journalist, awardwinning author, activist. His most recent book is wages of rebellion the moral imperative of revolt. He supports dr. Jill stein. [music break] amy people make the world go round by philadelphias own the stylistics. That is where we are, in philadelphia. Welclcome to democracy now im amy goodman with juan gonzalez. Juan as we continue to talk about the democrcratic national coconvention, we are joined by o guests. Joining us from berkeley, california is robert reich, former labor secretary under president clininton and d profer at the university of california, berkeley. Here in philadelphia is chris hedges, pulitzerprize winning journalist, awardwinning author, acactivist. His most recent book is wages of rebellion the moral imperative of revolt. I would like to begin with robert reich. You are a Bernie Sanders supppporter. You are now backing hillaryy clininton. Your perspective on what you saw last night. The possibility of the Democratic Party uniting behind Hillary Clinton or the sasanders supporters g going with jill stein. Robert it is very hard to tell what t the delegates are going o do. It is harder to o tell what thte electorate is going to do. Ththis is an agonizingng time fr many Bernie Sanders s supporter. With a great deal of reluctance initiallyy, because ive known for hiHillary Clinton for 500 ys , endodorsed berninie sanders ad worked my heart out for him. At this particular juncture, there is a great deal of sadness and d a great deal of regret. But having worked so long and so many years for basically thehe progressssivideals thahat Bernie Sanders stands for, i i can tell you that the movement is going to continue, it is goining to grow. At this particicular point in te , i dont see any alternative but to support hillary. I know hillary, i know her faults, i know her strengths. I supported Bernie Sanders because i ththought he would mae a better president for the system we need. Hillary clininton going to be te nonominee. I i support her not only because she will b be a good president ,f not a great president , but franankly becaususe im tremendy alternativeut the and the alteternative, as a practical matter, is somebody who is a mega maniac and a bigot , somebody who will set back the Progressive Movement decades, if not more. Amy chris hedges. Reducing the election to personalities is infantile, at this point. Of inverted system totalitarianism. We live in a system where Corporate Power is seizing control. There is n no way to vote againt the control of goldman sachs, etc. We have seen an assault against Civil Liberties under president obama. We have seen the executive branch misinterpret the 2001 authorization to use military force as giving its right to assassinate american citizens, including children. We have failed out the banks, pushed through programs of austerity, this is in a bipartisan effort because they have both been captured by Corporate Power. We have undergone a corporate coup detat. I just came back from poland, which is a case study of how neoliberal poison destroys a society and creates figures like trump. Poland has gone into a neofascism. But dislocated thehe working class, deindustrialized t the country, destroyed public institutions, and ththen it poisonons the political system d we are now watching them create up to 30,000 to 40,000 armed militia. They have an army. The parliament, nothining works. The political situatition in the United States has seized up in the same f form. Is trurumped a repugna personality, but in terms of megalomania and n narcissism, Hillary Clinton is not far behind. , which got t to break away is exactlyly the narrative they want us to focus on. Weve gotot to break away from political personalitities and understand and examine and critique the structures of power and the e Democratic Party, beginning under bill clintonon, has s carried water for corpopoe entities as assiduously as the republican party. This is someththing that ralph nader understood l long before e rest of us and stepped o out vey coururageously inn 2000. We will find him to be an amazingly propheticcigure. Nobody understands Corporate Power better t than ralph. This is why i support dr. Stein and the green party. They were pulling at exactly the same that the green party is pulling now, about 4 . Weve got to break out of this idea that we can create syststematic change withthin a paparticular elect in cycle election cycle. Weve got to be of to step out into the political wilderness for a dedecade. Of climatatesue change, on the destrtruction of civill libererty, including at toto privacy, whwhat does not et ananymore becacause of wholesale government surveillancee. We h have no abilityty. This w whole debate e over the wikileaks is insane. Did russia . Ive printed classified material given to me by the mossad. I never exposed to that mossad gave it t to me. E. Is what w was published true or untrue . These emails arere appalling, including cacalling dr. Core wil cornell west trash. It exposes the way thehe system was rigged. The denial of independence, the superdelegates, the stealing of the caucus in nevada, the huge amounts of corporarate moneyey d super pacs that floated to the clinton campaign. Andton has a track record it is one that has abandoned children. She and her husband destroyed welfare as we know it and 70 of the original recipients wewere children. , but trump isrump not a phenomenon. Trump is responding to a phenomenon created by neoliberalism. We may get something more vile, even ted cruz. Remember youice, i talking about your time as labor secretary when p president c cnn signed off on welfare reform and you described walking the streets of washington dc wondering where the protests were. You vigorously objected and there was also an issue e that Hillary Clinton and it was also a bill that Hillary Clinton supported. Can yoyou respond to thehese argumentnts . Robert it is not just t takinga walklk in the political wilderness. If donald trurump becomes prpresident ,t, it is irrevocable negative c changes that will happen in the united s states, including appointments to thee suprem court that will not just be political wilrness. They will l actually change and worsenen the strture of the country. I could not t agree wiwith chris hedges more abouout his critique overall of neoliberalism and a lot t of the structural problems that we face in n our political economy today. Iveve writttten about them ande done m more about it. I have been n in the center of power and i h have been doing everything i possisibly canan an individual and as a mobilizer and organizer to try to change what we now have. I think that v voting for donald trump or equal eating Hillary Clinton with donald trtrp is insane. Donald trurump is certaiainly a product of a kinind of system ad a systematic undermining that has occurred i in the United States for years with regard to inequalityty of income e and w h and political power, bubut we dont fight t that by simply saying allll right, lets just have dononald t tmp and hopope t the system impmproves itself and hope that things are so bad that people rise up in armed resistance. That is insane. That is crazy. Be very, ave to do is very stratategic as progressive. We h have got to look at thlolog term. We have e got to undnderstand tt Bernie Sanders brought us much further along than we w we before the sananders c campaign. We owe a lot to Bernie Sanders. His courage, his inintegrity, hs power, the fact that most people under 30 voted for Bernie Sanders. If you look at the people who voted for r Bernie Sanders under 30, there were more people than voted for donald trump andnd hillarary clinton together under the age of 30. We are building a Progressive Movement in this country. But over the next four years, i dont want donald trump iie retrievable he make it difficult to move forward. I understand that Hillary Clinton is not perfect. Ive known her for 50 years. I met her when she was 19 years old. I know her strengths and pretty wellll her weaknesses. She isis not perfect. As chris says, she is also very much a product of many of the problems structurally inin this country right now. We fight t the structural problems, yes. Handinhahand, chris, with you, shoulder to shouldlder, im very short, maybe its my shoulder and your rib cage, it doesnnt matter, i will continue to fight. Many peoeople are watching and listening and will continue toto fight. We must t continue to mobilize. I hope bernieie sanders does wht he implied to do and that is carried the moment thee movement forrd. Lend his name, his energy, his email list. This is not t the end of anytht, but we have got to be practical abouout what we e are doing andy strategic. Working with and through to change the power of strucucte in the couountry. Jujuan chris, you h have writtn that liberals are tolerated by the capitalist elite because they do not question the virtues of corporate capitalism, only its excesses and c call for tepd and ineffectual reforms. For that have also been set of fdr in the 1930s . Chris did not b back bernie he said that hee would d work within the democrac structures and support the nominee. I think we have now watched Bernie Sanders walk away from his political moment. I think he will come to deeply regret what he has done. He has betrayed thesee people wo believed in this Political Revolution. We heard the same rhetoric around obama in 2008. Olitical campaign rages raises consciousness, but it is not a movement. Hearing is furious spin. Liberals arere tolerated withina capitalize capitalist system. They are used to speak to people to get them to betray their own interests in the name of fear. I admire robert, but if you listen to what he has been saying, the message is the same message of the trunk campaign and that his fear. That is all the democrats have to offer and all the republicans have to offer. The fact is from Climate Change alone, we have no time left. I have four children. The future of my children by the becauseeing destroyed of the fact that the fossil fuel industry, along wiwith the animl agriculture industry, which is areres important, deststroying the ecosystemem on whicich we depend for life and neither partrty has any y intenn of f fixing it. Amy what should Bernie Sanders have done . E . Chris he should have walked out and run as an independent. Of take up the invitation dr. Jill stein . Chris yes, he should have run on the top of the ticket, as she invited. Bernie has a very checkered past. He campapaigned for clinton in 1992 a and in 1996, after nafta, the greatest betrayal of the working class in thisis country since the tafthartley act of 1948. After the omnibus crime bill that exploded the prison population. It is a monstrosity what weve done. 400,000 people locked in cages in this country. Half of them never committed a violent crime. That is alall bill clinton and t he went out and campaigned. In 2004, he called on ralph nader not to run so he could support a war candidate like john kerry. Talk about the iraq war. 60 of the Democratic Senators voted for the war, including Hillary Clinton. The idea that somehow democrats dont push us into war defefies american historyry. Amy y robert reich. I can say at allll this particular point in time many of the things thatat chris hedges is saying, i completely agree withth. The real question is what do we do right now . Whatat do we do to mobilize and organize a lot of f people who e not momobilized and organized ad how do we keep t the energy buililding . I disagree w with chris with regard to beBernie Sanders. I think Bernie Sanders h has ben a great and is a great leader riright now of the prprogressive cacause. What i think we ouought to do is develop a thirdparty outside the democratic andnd republican party, m maybe the green party,o that in the year 2020, four years from now, we have anothehr candidate, it may be bernie sasanders, i think he is probaby going to be too old by then, but we have a candidate that holds the democrats accountable. That provides a vehicle f for a lot of the energy of the Bernie Sanders movement to continue to develop, that fields new candidates at the senatee, in congreress, at the state level, that actually y holds democrat feet to the f fire and republblicans feet to the fire, ththat develops an agenda of getting money out of politics, and severing thehe link bebetwen extraordinarily concentrated wealth and political power in this country. That is what we ought to be doing. G. But in order to do that, we , i i thinke again that hillary will be a g good president , i if not a great one. This is not just t tracking in fear, chris. But i do f fear donald trump. I i fear the portals that i saww yesterday thehe polls thahato yesterday. The polls are indicative, they show donaldd trump doingng exceedingly well, beating Hillary Clinton. Right now, givenen our twoparty system, given our winner take all system with regard to the electoral college, it is justt too mucuch, they risk to go, to say, im going to not vote fofor the lesser of two evils, im going to vote executive with the want to do. Anybody can do that, that is a free country. You u vote your consnscience. You have to o do that. Im justst saying that your conscience needs t to be aware ththat if you do not supupport hillarary clinton, you are increasing the odds of a truee, clear, a and present danger to e United States, a menace to the united statates. You aree incncreasing the possibility that there will not be a progressive movemenent, the will not bee anything we move ad in the future because the ununid ststates will really be changed for the worse. Ththat is not a ririsk im prepd toto take at this point in time. Im going toto do exacactly what ive been doining the last 40 years. Im gogoing to conontinue to bey head against the walall to build and cocontribute to buildiding a Progressive Movement the d day after electition day. Im going to try to work with Bernie Sanders and anybody who else anybody else who wants to work to strengthen a thirdparty and maybe it is the green party for the year 2020 and dodo Everything Else i was just talking aboutut, but right now, as we lead up to elelection everyonone must urgrge who wawas listetening or who was watching to o do whatever theyen to make sure that Hillary Clinton is the next president and not donald trump. Amy we are going to break and then come back to this debate on both sides. Chris hedges is with us, pulitzer prizewinning journalist, awardwinning author, and activist. You were just listening to robert reich secretary under president the former labor secretary under president clinton. He was a Bernie Sanderers supporter and now says he will vote for Hillary Clintonon. When we come back, we will hear some of the words of donald trump and get response. [music break] amy this is democracy now im amy goodman wiwith juan gonzalez. Juan in n a moment, we will rereturn to ourr debate, but fi, letts turn to dodonald trumps nomination speech at the rnc in cleveland. Said sanders supporters would vote for him in the fall. Mr. Trump i have seen how the system is rigged against our citizens, just like it was rigged against Bernie Sanders. He never had a chance. Never had a chance. Supporters will join our movement because we will fix his biggest single issue, trade deals that strip our country of its jobs and strip us of our wealth as a country. Democrats will join our movement because we will fix the system so it works fairly and justly for each and every american. Juan that was donald trump talking at the convention in cleveland. Robert reich, donald trump and chris hedges agree on one thing, that bothtrade deals the republicans in the democrats have negotiated over the past few years have been disastrous for the American People area people. You were part of the Clinton Administration when nafta was packed past. Talk about this. Trump is clearly using trade and immigration as for makining the people who have really been hurt by trtrade, by globalization feel that he is going to somemehow be onon their sidide. He is not going to be e on their side. He is right in a very narrow respect, that trade has hurtt people, working people. The buburdens of trade have e fn on thohose people who o used toe good, unionized jobs in america. Wtoe failure of naftata and the , chinese ascension into the wto, all of wto, all of those programs, the failure e was not to have nearly strong e enough anand forceful enough labor and environmental side agreements. Number two, not to have adjustment mechanisms here in the unitited states for people o lost their jobs s to help them t good jobs that w were new jobs r the jobs they lostst. Could havers in t trade compensated the losers and still comeme out ahead, but they did not. That is a a structural, politicl problem in thihis country that e have to address. It is also a problem with regard toto technological displacement. Technology is displacing and will continue to disisplace more good jobs in the future, but we haveve no strarategy for d dealg with that. Right now, the burdens of technological displacement are falling oncece again on the working middle class, lower income people who have very few alternatives. Driving a greater and greater wedge between those who are lucky enough to have ririch parents or be well educated or be wellconnected and everybody else. We cannot go o on like this. Thisis is unsusustainable. Donanald trump and Bernie Sandes are symptomatic. There arises are both symptomamatic of this great wave of antiestablishment angnger tht is flooding american politics. Although, on ththe one side, you have authoritarian populism. On the Bernie Sanders side, you have Political Revolution. I prefer the Political Revolution and im going to continue to work or that. I think we have to acknowledge to facts. We do not live in a functioning democracy and we have to stop pretending that we d do. Privacy, youcerate cant use the word liberty. That is a relationship between a master and a slave. His is capitalism run amok this discussion should be about capitalism. When capitalism is on altered or unregulated, as it is, it is designed to increase profit and reduce the cost of labor. It has done that by deindustrialized the country. The clinton government enable this. The last convention was in cleveland. Are disneyfied and people are living in poverty , appalling poverty three blocks away. Putting poor people of color in cages all across the country. Why . , corporateplus labor entities cannot make money off of surplus or redundant labor. When you lock them on a cacage, they make 40,000 or 50,000 per year. We live in a system where under section 1021 of the National Defense authorization act, the executive e branch can put the soldiers in the street in clear to carry out extraordinary rendition of american citizens deemed to be terrorists, strip them of due process, and hold them indefinitely in military prisons, including in black sites. We engage in torture. Robert talks about building movements. You cant build movements in a political system where money has replaced the vote. It is impossible. The democrats bedside manner is different from the republicans. Trump is this kindnd of grotesqe figure. He is like the used car salesman who rolls back this be dominant. But Hillary Clinton is like the managers of goldman sachs. They both engage in criminal activities and crimp clintons record exposes this that have preyed on the most withinle vulnerable ththis country. And to somehow speak as if we are in a functioning democracy or speak as if there are any restraints on capitalism or speak as if the Democratic Party has not pushed forward this agenda obama has done this, he has been as it seek we as to wall street as the bush administration. Amy roberert reich. Is aert chris, i find frustrating conversation because i agree with so much of what you have said but the question i is what do we do o about it . Wee are in a better position today in the sense that Bernie Sanderss has h hped mobililize, organize, and energized a lotf americicans and educated a lot f americans about the very issues you have talked and written about and those e that i have written about. The question is, what is the action . What is the actual political strategy right now . Let me just put in my two cents. I think political strategy is not to elect donald trump, to elect hihillary clilinton. And for four years, to develop an alternative, another Bernie Sanders type candidate with an independent party. Outside the Democratic Party, that will take on hillaryy clinton, assuming that she is elected and that she runs for reelection, and that also develops the infrastructcture oa thirdparty that is a true, new progressive party. That is precisely what we are trtrying to do. Ththere is a point whehere you e to draw a line in the sand. That is part of the problem with the left. We havent. I i cover the war in yugoslavia. I find many parallels between what is happening in the United States and what happened in the breakdowown of yugososlavia. What caused the country to decide disintegrate . It was the economic meltdown of yugoslavia and a bankrupt liberal establishment that after the death of teedo until 1989 or 1990 spoke in the language of democracy, but proved ineffectual in terms of dealing with the plight of working men and women who were cast out of state factories. Fact that these neoliberal policies, which the democratic partrty is one of the engines f, have created this right wing fascism. This protofascism. Go back and look at the y marr republic. Republic. Of course i find trump a violin disturbing and disgusting figure, but i dont believe that voting for thehe democratic twoblishment the insurgencies were against figures like hillary c clinton, who spoke in that traditional feel your pain language of liberalism while serving corporate e power and selling ot working men and women. , thesee through the con game. I dont think Bernie Sanders educated the public. Asfact, Bernie Sanders spoke a political candidate about the reality the public was experiencing because even barack obama, in his state of the union address, was talking about economic recovery and everything was wonderful and people know that it is not. Let me just finish. Let me finish. When you dispossess that segment , half the country lives in virtual poverty, and you continue to essentially run the government that has been seized by a cobol, in this case corporate, which uses all the machinery of government for their own enrichment and the run with her empowerment, at the expense of the rest of the citizenry, people finally reaeat and thatat is i you get fascism. You dodoery time exactly what trump does which is fear, fear, fear, fear. The fact that we are going to build d a movement after h hilly clintonn that is not how itt works. Me try to inject some hope in thihis discscussion rather t than fear. Ive been traveling around this country for the e last two years trying to talk to tea partiers and conservatives and manyy people who are prorobably goingo vote for donald trump to try to undersrstand whahat it is that y are doining and how they view america and why they are acting in ways that are so obviously against their selfinterest. Hehere is e interestining thing ive found. This great a antiestablishment wave occurring on the leleft in the right has a great overlapap, isyou will, and that overlap a deep contempmpt for what many people on the right call crony capitalili. Those e people on the riright, y workrking people, theyey are nol white, many of them are, many of them are working class, many have suffered from m trade and techchnological displacement ana government that is really turning its back on them. Aboutf thehem feel as angry the Current System and about corporate welfare and about in politics as many of us on the Progressive Side do. If it is possible to have a multiracial, multiethnic coalalition of the bottom 90 tt is ready to fight to get big money out of politics, for more isality, for a system t that not t rigged againinst average, working peoeople, where there ae not goining to be e all of these from those e ofupp us who havavpaychecks s and we dont even realize that larger and largrger portions are goinio big industries, conglomerates, concentrated industries that have great mararket power becaue it is all hihidden f from view the more cocoalition building we can do from right to left, multiethnic, multitiracial, left and right, to bubuild a movement to take back our economy juan i would just like to interrupt you for just a second. I wanted to ask chris one last question. Regardless of you are voting for jill stein, other folks are going to vote fofor clinton and trtrump. Where do you feel this Massive Movement that has developed, where do you feel it would have a better opportunity to grow under a clinton or Trump Presidency . I dont think it makes any difference. He tpp is going to go through enendless war is going to bebe contininued. We are not going to get our privacy back. T the figure in the executive branch exercises that much power given the power of the war industry a and wall strt is a myth. Juanan even on immigration . Chris on immigration . I mean, lets look at obamas record on immigration. You cant get worse than obama. Amamy robert reischch. Robert equating donald trump and d Hillary Clinton is absolue nonsense. Ananybody who equates the two of them is not paying attention. It is dangerous kind of talk. Chris that is not what i did. Amy this is aa discussion that will continue. Chris hedges, i want to thank you for being with us. Former clinton labor secretary robert reich. Professor at the university of california berkeley. Doesnt for the broadcast.
