Just two days after millions of pepeople poured into the streets of washington, d. C. , and cities around the world, the historic womens march on washington, President Trump has reinstated the controversial global gag rule which womens rights advocates fear will increase unsafe abortions around the world. The policy originated during the reagan era and bans u. S. Funding for any International Health Care Organization that performs abortion or advocates fofor the legalization of abbortion or evn mentions abortion. Even if those activities are funded by nonus money. Trump signed t the order susurrounded by seven other men. White e House Press Secretary sn spicer was questioned about the move on monday. Of all the actions he could have chosen today, he chose what message is he sending here . This easy the elevation, reduction of abortions as an American Value . Here home, f americans expect signature on legislation . The president , no secret, has made it clear he is a prolife president. He wants to stand up for all americans, including the unborn. I think the reinstatement of this policy is not just something that echoes the value, but respect taxpayer funding as well and ensures we are standing up not just for life, life of the unborn, but for also taxpayer funds being spent overseas to perform an action that is contrary to the values of this president and i think continue to further illustrate not just to folks here in this country, butut around the world, what a value we place on life. Amy the global gag rule is s sn by many as a majajor global barrier to access to crucial Womens Health services. In this animated video, the president of planned parenthood s its a the policy works. This role, also known as the mexican city policy, was first put in place three decades ago by president reagan. Current u. S. Policy restricts organizations from using u. S. Funds to pay for abortioion. The gag rule goes further by dictating what they can do with their own n money. This means if a clinic receives even one dollar of u. S. Assistance for family plalannin, itit is doctorors andnd nurses d in what t they can d do to help their p patients. They cannonot counsel l a womana full r range of hehealth optiois legalllly availablble to h her,r her to another provider for specialized cacare, or even give her pamphlets w with medically accurate information. That is why they call it the global gagagule because e it prevents doctors from talking to patients of providing Services Legal in their own country and in the u. S. And it keeps people from participating in the democrcratc process of their own country. This means clinics closing their doors, more unintended pregnancies, and more unsafe abortions. Any furtheher prochoice group naral eeteted trumps reinstatement of the global gag rule officially turns his antiwoman, antichoice rhetoric into policy. Meanwhile, democratic senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and democratic congresswoman nita lowey of new york announced they would introduce the her act to repeal the global gag rule. Well, for more, were joined now by dawn laguens, executive Vice President of planned Parenthood Federation of america and the planned parenthood action fund. Dawn laguens, welcome to democracy now the significance of this gag rule. I mean, do you see it as retaliation for what happened to days before you had this ,istoric womens march President Trump is obsessed with numbers, the march looks like it than his times larger crowd for his inauguration, which seems to be his top concern riright now. Is thihis i dont know if it is retaliation, but i do know it is the targeting of the most Vulnerable Women in the whole world with a policy that is going to mean women will die because of this action. It is outrageous contrasted with the march, with the voices of women around the world saying they expected more. Amy so explain exactly how this works. What happenens is, and this s a more expansive version, by the way, of the global gag rule, worse than anything that happened on under Ronald Reagan because theyve extended to apply not just to Family Planning funds, but 8 million in Global Health aide. It m means any organization that takes one of those dollars to do the cap revenge and come to do hiv aids counseling, to do Family Planning work, if they speak honestly to their client, to their patient about the e ful range of Reproductive Health care options available, if they refer or advocate, or even as you said mention abortion, they willll lose that funding. And they will not be able to provide those other servivices because, unfortunately, alreadyy rtion dollars canannot pay dollars cannot pay for abortion internationally, u. S. Eight dollars. Amy in the United States, i was listening to cnn and one of the critics of planned parenthood when someone said, at least in , what abortiones Services Provided in the country or Something Like 3 of the services that planned parenthood provides at the clinics . Planned parenthood provides about 97 of services that are Preventative Health services. Amy s so what are they bother providing abortions . Abortion n as part of the ful range of Womens Health care. It is a legal right. I think one of the things that sean spicer forgets when he says that theyre going to export American Values, and American Value is access to our constitutional rights. Abortion is one of them boast of amy recently information was put out, again, and the United States and the gag order applies outrnationally, put information that abortions are at an alltime low, largely attributed to contraception. Orderll the global gag affect access to contraceptionon fofor women around ththe world . Principled organizations around the world will be forced to make a choice as to whether they accept those Family Planning dollars that they used to provide all kinds of Family Planning services if they also are going to stay true to their mission of serving women with a full range of Reproductive Health services or at least informing them. I mean, in many cases, this is just about if a woman is going to ask about an abortion, that they cant refer them to someone who could provide a safe, legal abortion at have to let them be out in the world trying to figure this out on their own. Women,ly is insulting to their intelligence, and their freedom. Amy is this going to go to effect immediately . Organizations are going to immediately have to decide whether theyre going to sign and abide by this gag rule. Organizations like save the children and cair oppose these kinds of regulations, oppose global gag rules because they know it hurts women. I want to remind people that when barack Obama Took Office eight years ago and reversed the global gag rule, there were some 70,000 women a year dying from these policies being in place. That has dropped down to 20,000 now at the end of the years. Were just very fearful this is going to cause that number that loss of life, maternal mortality, to skyrocket. Amy how will this affect planned parenthood in particular . You hahave your national seriesf clinics around the e country, network of clinics whwhat about internationalally . We do a lot of support were internationally. We do not take u. S. Aid dollars internationally. Of course, we are concerned about the rights and health of women across this country. Some of the same people who advocate for these policies in the global gag rule also are the people who are advocating for taking away the rights of women in america. We are very cononcerned. As you know, these are the saved people trying to defund planned parenthood and take away access to Preventative Health Services Like Family Planning, for millions of women in this country. About thet to ask you confirmation hearing that will happen today for tom price. Last week, Donald Trumps pick for the head of health and human services, appeared before his hearing. Price is a member of the g carty to party caucus. He opposes abortion, has voted to cut all federal funding for planned parenthood come also supports advertising medicare was of democratic senator patty murray of washington said women are deeply concerned about prices, nation. This is editor murray lessening price at last weeks hearing. Are deey y concernened about the imimpact this could he onheirir accccess to healalth ce thatat they need. Ive h heard from many of them. According to planned parenthood, demand for iuds, a form of lasting contraception, is up 900 since the election. I want to ask you, will you commit to ensuring all 18 fda approved methods of contraception continue to be covered so that women do not have to go back to payaying exta costs for r breath control . What i will commit to an usher is that women and all americans need to know that we belilievtrongly ththat every single american ought to have access to the kind of coverage and care that they desire and want. My that is congressman price his second confirmation hehearig will take placace today. Dawn laguens . Very concerned about the history of tom price, as you mentioned, 65 times voted against the Affordable Care act, has been a leader in the defunding and fight against planned parenthood services. As you heard him, will not commit to protecting the Preventative Health services. Were a lot about the 20 Million People who may lose insurance coverage. We dont hear very much about the 55 million women who are getting no copay Birth Control today, saving 1. 4 billion into their Family Budgets every year that they are threatening. This is going to have a big impact. I call it the mom tax. Theyre going to shift 1. 4 billion back onto the ledgers of families in this country. And that is going to be a big shock to people. It will mean a lot of people dont get the cacare and coverae in the Birth Control option that would work best for them. Amy dawn laguens, thank you for being with us executive vice , president of planned Parenthood Federation of america and the planned parenthood actionon fund. Were here in park city, utah, the Sundance Film Festival. When we come back, were going to look the first News Conference of the new press Secretary Sean Spicer. Stay with us. [music break] amam the womens march on washington saturday. This is democracy now , democracynow. Org, the war and peace report. Im amy goodman. We turn to look at p President Trump, the media, and what the new Administration Calls alternative facts. On saturday, trump visitited cia heheadarters speaking of front of the cias memorial wall. He told the agency he had a running were with the media. Pres. Trump so i can only say that i am with you 1000 and the reason you are my first up is as you know, running war with the media. They are among the most dishonest human beings on earth. And ththey sort of made it souod like i had a feud with the intelligence community. I just want to let you know, the reason you are the number one stop is exactly the opposite. Exactly. And they understand that, too. Amy that was just the beginning of the new administrations attack on the press. According to the Washington Post company after trump returned from the cia, he turned on the television to see hundreds of thousands of protesters taking part in the womens march on washington, an image showing large patches of white into space on the mall during his inauguration. Many outlets were broadcasting images showing how the size of his inauguration was far smaller than obamas first inauguration in 2009. Despite objections from his advisers, trump ordered this new press Secretary Sean Spicer to walk out into the White House Press room and read an Emergency Press statement. This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration period, both inperson and around the globe. Even the New York Times goes for printed a photograph showing a misrepresentation of the crowd in their original tweet, in a paper, which to show the full extent of the support, depth, and crowd in intensity that existed. These attempts to lessen the enthusiasm of the inauguration. Re shameful and wrong the president t is committed to unifying our country and that was the focus of his inaugural address. This kind of dishonesty in the media, the challenging the bring about our nation together making itit more difficult. Theres s been a lot of tatalk n the e media about the respsponsibility to hold d donad trump acaccountable. Im here to tell your goes two ways. Were going to hold the president accountable as well. Amy that is w white housese pra greater sean spicer. He left these days before taking questions. On sunday, chuck todd confronted counseselor to the president Kellyanne Conway about spicers lies. Dont be so overly y dramatic about it, chuck. K. You are saying it is a falsehood. There giving sean spicer he gave alternative facts to that. Alternative facts . Alternative facts . Chuck for of the five fax he uttered are not true. Alternative facts are not facts, there are falsehoods. Amy then on monday, sean spicer held his First Official press briefing where he was grilled about his commentss from saturday. Spicer cleaned sometimes we can disagree with the facts. Before i get to a policy question, a question about the nature of your job. Is it your intention to always tell the truth from that podium, and will you pledge never to knowingly Say Something that is not factual . It is. It is an honor to do this. Yes, i believe we have to be honest with you and at the people. I think sometimes we can disagree with the facts. There are certain things that we may not fully understand when we come out. Our intention is never to lie to you, jonathan. Our job is to make sure you are in the same boat. There are times when you guys tweet something out or write a story and you publish a correction. That doesnt mean you were intentionally trying to deceive the mecca people, does it . Affordede should be the same opportunity. A talk more about President Trump in the a we are joioiney two guests. Here in park city, Brian Knappenberger with us, director of a new documentary called nobody speaks. Inin new york, Mark Hertsgaard s with us, investigative editor at the nation magazine, and author of seven books, including on bended knee the press and the reagan presidency. Yoyou have this raging press secretary who storms out into the press room. They say he is going to hold a press briefing. A press conference. Series ofkes these lies. Says it was the largest inaugurationon. Not only in n u. S. Hisistory, bn the world. It is extraordinary, even listening g to the c clips you t playeded. Remember, we are on day three of this trump admdministration. What were s seeing is an extension of w what we have seen in the lasast year from candidie trumump. His rise was really a result of an allout assault on the press. One thing after another. You would be rate the press. He called them names, s scum, sd he was going to open up liable laws and sue you like you have never been s sued before. He would go around the press. He would attack even things like satire, like saturday night live with the casast of hamilton. Anything that threatened him or anything that approached an adversarial question at all, he would just go crazy with. I think were in a period where this is somethiing we have to woworry about. We just dont know what this guy will be capable of doing with the executive brbranch at his control. Amy Mark Hertsgaard, your First Impression of President Trump, presidency, dealing with the press . You heard mr. Trump say it, he is in a war with the press. It has been longstanding. There is an old saying in media circles, it is never wise for an elected official to pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel. That is reference to when hundred years ago when it was newspapers that dominated the press. I think donald trump is going down a very dangerous road. Having written a book about the White House Press corps and how in general the White House Press corps wants to get along with any president , whatever the party, they want to have access to white house officials. They like to do that inside baseball kind of coverage. I think what might be happening here, though, is that donald trump and his administration sean spicer the press secretary may end up provoking the Washington Press corps in the Mainstream Media in general into becoming an adversarial press, which is not what they want to do, the media, but it is what the constitution and american civics calls on them media t to do, told elected officials accountable by asking tough questions will stop in general, that is not the way the Washington Press corps operates. Yet i think they now have a choice. Trump is so aggressive against thatand spicer as well, the Washington Press corps is either going to respond back to be adversarial or theyre just going to take it. I think that that is probably not going to end for either party well, and certainly not for the white house. I think they are going down a dangerous road theyre going to regret. Them a habit of telling falsehoods and a very thin skin. You mentioned that he orderered sean spicecer to go out and get that statement on saturday. With easily demonstrable falsehoods. That placed his political base, the one out of three americans were going to stick with donald trump no matter what. I dont think it will play to that middle one third of americans, some of whom voted for him in november. Amy i want to go back to mondays press conference with the press Secretary Sean Spicer. I want to go to this clip right now of sean spicer. He talked at thehe end of the ns confererence about how demoralilizing i it was for the press to be critical of thee president. Lets see if we can get that clip. I think over and over, theres this constant attempt to unundermine his credibility in e movement he represents. It is frustrating for not just him, but i think so many of us that are trying to work to get this message out. Im agent is to john, part of this is a two way street. We want to have a healthy dialogue, not just with you, but the American People because he is fighting for jobs, fighting to make this country safer. When youre constantly eating told that can be true, we doubt you could do this, this wont happen, and that is the narrative when you turn on the television every single day . It is a little frustrating. Amy there you have sean spicer. That it is demoralizing when he presses critical, brian . It is demoralizizing whehen e presses crititical. What a comicical statement alml. What is the purpose of a free and independent press . It is to be critical, to speak truth to power. I think they got to get over it they are in the business of running the country now, and focus on what they need to be doing and understand this is critical to the way things work. Amy lets talk about nobody speak free trials of the press. This is a remarkable film or you look at the lead up to this film and all that took place in President Trumps supporters, specifically, peter thiel. Tell us what you found and why you have spent this s time lookg , suits against the press, and what it means for today. This film actually started as the kind of deep dive into the hulk hogan gawker media case in which hulk hogan was suing gawker media for posting a sex tape of him. I was interested in the First Amendment v versus privacy c ca. We started making of documentary, but then we realized afterwards, there wwe a 140 million sentence against gawker which force them into a group c. That it was revealed that peter wasas actually fundnding hulk hogans lawsuit. The film became sosomething. Didifferent. We statarted looking at this notion of peter thiel funding this lawsuit that led to the death of this online website. That of course was before he spoke at the rnc, became a trump supporter. Eventually, became part of the trump transition team. That was an opening that we needed to look at, how many really has a leverage against desk money really has a leverage against those who have a next to grind. Amy lets go to the secondary. This is margaret sullivan, the former public editor for the neNew York Timeses. Trump h has done a a number f things o over e courursef his give us a ahat should great chchill of cauause for coconcern. Amamong them are his lack of transparency, his inaccessibility, his extremely harsh criticismsm, and evenen ae of jouournalists. S. Trumump to excuse me, i was to n television. You are a real beauty. Try getting it out. I dont know if youre going to put ththis on television, bubutu dodont knknow what yoyoure t g ababout. He is beenen but severus and his criticism of the press. Is ththis what i it is goingo be l like covering if youou aree presidenent . Pres. Trump yes, it iis, davi. He called t the media and reporters scum. You saidid over and over agagain that thehey are dishshonest, thy are cocorrupt. Pres. Trump they do not want to give a straight because e the press are liars. They a are the most dishonest human beings. Amy Brian Knappenberger, director of nobody speak, trials of the free press. A clip from it and the significance of this and tell us more about peter thiel and also what the attack on gawker made for journalism, whether or not people like gawker, and s sheldn adelson and whwhat happened with him in the takeover of las vegas paper . Gawker is a controversial site. A lot of people hated it, but i think even if you think that they might have done something wrong, the fact that this first of all, enormous verdict, the fact thehey would have lost this case, and the fact that it could d have been sort of the secretive working behind the scenes chess moves behind the scenes in order to get rid of themem was disturbing to a lot f people. We also look at the secretive purchase of the Las Vegas Review journal i sheldon adelson. This is an extraordinary story of a free presess where the Las Vegas Review, the reporters were informed in a meeting, big meeting, the paper had been bought. That is next ordinary thing for anyone in any company. Wow, we have new owners. Being reporters they said, who is our new owner and what are their expectations, what is their perspective . I think it is a natural question. The answer they got was, dont worry about it. Just do your job. You dont need to know who owns you. The reporter said, wait a minute, what is our jobs . That is our jobs. Ththey immedediately went to wok trying to figure this out, who bought the paper, and so we follow that story, which i think is the nexext ordrdinary tale of journalism, trying to figure o t who bobought the paper. Ththat is their boss, so their jobs are on the line. Amy peter thiel and Donald Trumps relationship, the image of them hugging at the tech meeting in new york at trump tower when all of the other tech leaders were there. It is extraraordinary. As far as i i can telell, they d not really know each other before the gawker verdict. I think trump, when he heard about was quoted saying, i love them. Clearly, they are likeminded in many ways. If think amy and what all of this bodes for now . I think we have two things gogoing on. We have this vulnerability of the press to potentially people with a lot of money, dont you nears, whoho might have an ax o grudge who are thinskinned that dont want to hear a word of criticism. And unfortunately, now we have one of those people in the executive brancnch of the united statates government. Amy finally, i want to go back to Mark Hertsgaard in new york to the medias coverage of the womens march all over the country. Covering the march for the nation. It was striking to me just how. Arge this demonstration was ive covered a lot of demomonstrations in my career. You show some of the pictures, amy. This was very possibly the single largest political demonstration in United States history. Just a washington event. If you add in new york, los angeles, were even the police amy i think large angeles was larger than washington. Amy even police have 500000 and los angeles. This was the Biggest Little protests in history and somehow most of the mass media, the Corporate Media, missed that point. It was happening right in front of them. Yet they are not inclined to go out and cover social movements. They had pictures of it, but that nobody on the ground. After i came back from witnessing the protest, i turned on the television and watched cnn and then cbs, and they discussed this without the benefit of an actual journalist being on the panel. There was a republican political hack and democratic little hack talking about the supposed meeting and aims of this march, but nobody you had been on the ground who did journalism 101 talk to the people who are there,e, ask them why theyre dodoing it. I want to give a quick shout out to democracy now you guys were broadcasting live 10 a clock a. M. To 3 00 p. M. , and that is what journalism should be. Thatng back to this film youre talking about, very much want to watch that film. I think it points out that this is a moment of truth for the american media. The Corporate Media included. They will either stand up to the Trump Administration, which is very clearly engaged in a war on the media. The choices are either to stand up to that and fight back or to get rolled. I think if they stand up, they will find the American Public is ready y and waititing for real journalism. Amy people can bench watch democracy now coverage of the womens march on washington at democracynow. Org. And also to adjust to say, the media very much focused and maybe President Trump was aware of this, he took on continually comparing the crowds of his inauguration to presidenent oba. And the fact is, the New York Times headlines add, the womens march was three times larger in washington, d. C. , then his inauguration crowd. Brian knappepenberger, thank you for being with us, good luck on your premier today. Mark hertsgaard stay with us as we talk about donald trump and the environment. My interview with Vice President al gore here in park city. Stay with us. [music break] amy this is democracy now , democracynow. Org, the war and peace report. Im amy goodman. We are broadcasting from the Sundance Film Festival here in park city, utah. On sunday, i moderated a panel that included former Vice President al gore, talking about what Climate Policy might look like under the Trump Administration.
