Weighs in on clintons email trouble and the conflicts posed by the Clinton Foundation. The good news, thank god, is there is no evidence of anything thats been illegal. Dickerson new cbs Battleground Tracker numbers give us the first look into the political impact of the f. B. I. Directors move in the states that matter the most. Its all coming up on face the nation. Good morning and welcome to face the nation. Im john dickerson. With a little over a week to go before election day, the ban lash from f. B. I. Director comeys decision to make public the discovery of possible evidence tied to the clinton email server investigation has been intense. Theres been a lot of confusion. What we know is that thousands of emails were found on a laptop belonging to former new york congressman Anthony Weiner and his wife huma abedin that could have some bearing on the investigation into whether or not Hillary Clintons use of a private email server violated the law. Weiner is under investigation for charges of sending sexually explicit texts to a 15yearold girl. Abedin is a top aide to Hillary Clinton. The couple is separated, but she reportedly transferred state Department Emails to her personal yahoo account in order to print them for secretary clinton. We begin our coverage with cbs news justice correspondent jeff pegues, who is outside the f. B. I. This morning. Good morning, jeff. Theres been a lot of speculation that director comey wouldnt have taken this turn if he didnt have Something Big in these emails if they have read, but they havent gotten an email to read the emails yet, have they . They have not. As of late saturday night, as we reported, they have not secured this warrant. Thats important to this process. They cannot legally look at these emails until they secure that warrant. The warrant that seized the laptop, that pertained to the Anthony Weiner investigation, so they knew they require a new search warrant to look at these new emails. John . John jeff, there is a chance they could be duplicates or not relevant to the case. Is a that why there has been some news that the Justice Department was against the idea of director comey sending a letter announcing this latest turn . Reporter listen, one of the cardinal rules here is you dont kiss dis close information about an investigation, and certainly close to an election, so that is something that is at play here. John any chance director comey would turn over any of this early . Well, as you know, the pressure on him to do that is increasing. F. B. I. Director comey over the years has been someone who likes to do things by the book, and so any new revelations could jeopardize what investigators are trying to do. So it is unlikely that he will release any new information, but the pressure is growing on him to do that. John all right, jeff pegues outside the f. B. I. For us. Thanks so much, jeff. Joinings now is republican Vice President ial hopeful indiana give mike pence. Welcome. Its nice to have you here, governor. Thank you, john. Christa before we talk about this latest revelation in the f. B. I. Server case. Lets step back for a minute. Both you and donald trump think this was wrongly decided in july when director comey found no evidence of an exchange of classified information. Whose fought is it that it was wrongly decided . I think thats an open question, but ultimately its the director of the f. B. I. s decision last july to not go forward with recommending charges was deeply troubleing to millions of americans, and us included. It followed on the heels of when former president clinton met on a private aircraft with with the attorney general, and days later the director of the f. B. I. Literally laid out a case of the mishandling of classified information on a private server that Hillary Clinton operated while she was secretary of state and had a private Family Foundation taking money from Foreign Corporations and foreign countries. And then two days later, the director of the f. B. I. Went to capitol hill and literally undercut his own decision by confirming to the congress that what Hillary Clinton had said about classified information was not true, that she had emailed classified information, that there had been emails marked classified. So i think it was deeply troubleing to millions of americans, but we commend the f. B. I. And the director on their decision to keep their word to the congress and move forward. Dickerson heres whats confusing, though, troubling allows you to be in both places without saying its exactly somebodys fault because youre alleging the attorney general put pressure on the f. B. I. Director, which is a pretty strong claim, and that that changed his mind. Do you think it changed his mind, he was going to go and brick charges but he changed his mind because the attorney general put pressure on him . John, im not alleging that. You just suggested it. Dickerson but why bring up the meeting with clinton . I think because the meeting itself was very troubling. Dickerson whats troubling . Because of an industrious local tv reporter, you found out that former president clinton got on a private aircraft, had a private, clandestine meeting with the attorney general just days before f. B. I. Decided not to recommend charges in a case where we have a fourstar general today who is facing very serious legal consequences for mishandling classified information, and yet here again we see a double standard where the American People believe that theres a different standard for Hillary Clinton and for the clintons than there is for the rest of us. But what the decision this week showed is even 11 days before an election, no one is above the law. The f. B. I. Director has step forward, kept his word to the congress and the American People, and told us theres more information and an investigation is now reopened. Dickerson you say its troubling. Mr. Trump has said hed investigate Hillary Clinton if hes made president. Would part of that investigation be this meeting between the attorney general and bill clinton as a part of the investigation into Hillary Clinton . I think that. Dickerson if its troubling, it seems like its worth investigation. At the end of the day, i think the American People have a right to know why when she was secretary of state in charge of all of our Foreign Policy and operating a private foundation dealing with foreign governments. Dickerson im talking about the meeting between bill clinton and the attorney general. Is that worth investigation . I think the mishandling of classified information in this case, which is a violation of the law for any other american, is worthy of investigation. Lets be clear about this issue. Hillary clinton refused to turn over 33,000 emails. Dickerson absolutely. I truly do believe that as we approach this election Hillary Clinton ought to turn over those 33,000 emails to the public, to the press, and let the American People fully examine the correspondents of her record and her communication about that work. Dickerson Trump Campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said suggesting comey is a partisan is dangerous and unfair. But donald trump is going after comey and the Justice Department on this issue for the last fur months. So was that also, what Kellyanne Conway said, dangerous and unfair . I think questioning the decision by the federal bureau of investigation this summer is something that millions of americans have didnt and donald trump has expressed that frustration of millions of americans, john. Dickerson but he said its politically moat secretary of , which she says is dangerous and unfair. What were seeing now is the old play books of the politics of personal destruction that the clintons have rolled out through their career, and theyre targeting the director of the f. B. I. And questioning his personal integrity. Dickerson but these are Donald Trumps word. Governor, these are Donald Trumps word, this is a disgusting example of just how badly career politicians have rigged the system. Thats taking a shot at the f. B. I. And director comey for that original decision. That original decision is really incomprehensible to millions of americans. To arrive at place where even in his Prime Minister before the congress and in that long press conference that he gave, john, that literally Hillary Clinton had classified information on a private server, that she said she didnt have, that she emailed classified information, that she said she didnt do, all of these things misrepresented, mishandling classified information, and then to conclude that she was extremely careless and there would be no recommendation of charge, that to me is the kind of double standard that the American People are wary of, but i think people are very encouraged by the decision this week by the f. B. I. To say we have a large volume, as is being reported in the press, a large volume of new information, and were going to investigate it in our own timely way. Dickerson 21 Million People have voted. Is there any real evidence that this election is being stolen based on what you ail and the trump team have been watching as this voting is getting under way . I dont think theres a suggestion about it being stolen as much as frankly. Dickerson trump said if he lost information it would only be if it was stolen. He used that word. When donald trump and i talk about a rigged system, i mean, the documented overwhelming bias among many in the National Media, got a lot of respect for you, john, a lot of people in the National Media with overwhelming negative coverage of donald trump, gives the American People the feeling that the National Media gets up every day and does half of Hillary Clintons work for her, but we also know that voter fraud has happened in polling places and precincts around the country, and were just calling on every american to find a way to respectfully participate in their local election process to ensure that when we achieve that victory on november 8th, its also a victory for american democracy. Dickerson youve said republicans should come home. Why arent they coming home yet . Its close to the end . Well, donald trump has a message to make America Great again. Its reached out to millions of independents in this country who are tired of gridlock in washington, d. C. Frankly, hes appealed to millions of democrats around this country who are tired of trade deals shipping jobs overseas and liberal policies. After a 17way republican primary, you know, theres some differences and some texs within our party, but my message as i travel around the country this week is its time for republicans to come home to elect the trumppence team. Time for republicans to reelect republican majorities in the congress. And time to come home to make sure that not only for this weeks news but for a stronger military, a stronger economy, a Supreme Court that upholds our constitution, that we ensure that Hillary Clinton is never elected president of the United States. Dickerson all right. Governor mike pence, thanks so much for being with us. Good luck out there. Thank you, john. Christa we interviewed Vice President on thursday, a day before the f. B. I. Directors announcement, but Hillary Clintons email server, as well as hacked emails showing more coziness between the Clinton Foundation and corporations and foreign government, were on our minds when we sat down in the Vice President s ceremonial office. I asked him if it was inevitable there would be a conflict between the Clinton Foundation and Hillary Clintons role as secretary of state. I think theyve acknowledged that, that they could have done it better. The good news, thank god, is theres no evidence of anything thats been illegal, but its, you know, like, for example, they now said that when she went i hope, if she wins, hell get off the board of the foundation. I think theyd make changes if they could go back. Dickerson should they just shut it down . It does too much good to shut it down. I have not been, you know, the numberone defender of the Clinton Foundation, but its done too much good. So shifting it to the control of others beyond the clintons i think would be, you know, i think its going to be necessary if she becomes president. Dickerson trust and honesty has been a big part of this campaign. Voters dont trust either of the two candidates. I looked back at promises to keep, and i talk about your grandfather, and his lesson, which was Public Servants are obliged to level with everybody. Whether or not theyll like what he, the public servant, has to say. Do you think that applies to Hillary Clinton dealing with this private server that she set up . Well, i think its a combination of a couple things. One, i dont think shes understood the gravity of setting it up. She thought it was okay to do. And then when this woman has been so battered over the last 0 years, i think then when faced with this is a problem, i think instead of just cutting it and dealing with it immediately, theres always an inclination to overthink it. But what i really do believe and my grandfather said, i think people reward you being straightforward. My state of delaware was a red state, not a blue state when i got up there, and i say things and people come up and say, well, at least i know where the kid stands. I still think its the best policy, but when you have been on the other end of a consorted effort, justified or not justified, to undermine your credibility, i think you probably are in a different place in terms of how your instinct responds. Dickerson if shes in that other place with those instinct, does she need somebody to push against those instincts to keep what your grandfather. I do think she does, and i think she notion she does. And i think she also knows when shes elected shes going to have to be prepared to be more open as president as to what her feelings are about things. But, you know, theres a double standard, john. I get all this credit for being authentic and, you know, now even biden gaffes are now, biden tells the truth kind of thing. But im a guy. I go out and if i Start Talking about my bow ini get filled up, my son died, people say hes a good, decent father, honorable man. If she were to do that, wed have a chorus of shes playing the woman card here, shes crying, a little bit like michelle, my time Michelle Obama said something strong, well, shes an angry black woman. Theres a sector of the electorate that. I think that has a tendency at least over 30some years of hillary to cause her to close rather than open. Dickerson when people talk about your candor, what they say is you, you know, you Say Something true maybe ahead of time, before its all been worked out, and thats worked well for you politically. What i hear from voters about her is even when shes saying something that may be right, what they hear from her sounds like shes not being straight with them. But hillary says herself, look, im not that good a candidate. Im not bill or barack. And a lot of that is personal style. I do think she is more measured and she makes fewer mistakes than i make or most people i know, but i just think its more. It doesnt go to interintegrity or honesty. It goes to her style. Dickerson do you send emails . I dont. Let me back up. Occasionally ill get an email from family member, but i dont have my staff send emails. If they do, they text me something, but i am sure i have some emails, but the answer is no. Dickerson are you happy these days you dont . Im very happy that i dont have an awful lot of email, but who knows. The ways the russian hack, they may have hacked into anything i have. I dont know. Dickerson donald trump says, how do you know its the russians who hacked into the dnc or into wikileaks . How do you know . Think about what that says to the rest of the world. Here the Intelligence Community of the United States government, the most poe tebbit military in the world with the most significant intelligence capability in the world, says flatly, we know it was russia and we know it was putin or we know it was the russian, and a candidate for president already is fawning over putin says, well, how do they know . What does that do to the confidence of all our allies . Here you got a guy heading the grand ole party, and it is a grand ole party, saying, well, you know, 17 american soldiers kim this was done, but i dont think they know. I dont think they know. What does that say . Its a little bit like the president going out and saying, you know, they tell me we got a good military, but i dont think they have much capacity. Its bizarre. Dickerson is it politics, or do you think theres something more . I dont know that she just doesnt know. I know i get criticized for saying this, he just may not be informed enough to know what hes saying. It just. Some of it is so out of the box, john. So far out of the box. Its hard to believe that he could be so devoid of the facts. So its either deliberate attempt to undermine or it is totally uninformed. Dickerson if we hear 17 intelligence agencies, if we read that in the press, how do we know . How does he know as a candidate . Hes being briefed. Hes being briefed. Intelligence guys are coming in. Dickerson so hes just not reading this on the internet. This is not the internet. You had the head of the Intelligence Community, mr. Clapper came out and confirmed in front of all of you, this is what we have determined. Dickerson question about obamacare. Yeah. Dickerson 25 premium increases on those who buy insurance through the federal exchanges. Yeah. Dickerson ameliorated buys up to these, but some insurers are leaving the program. Is it in peril if the next president doesnt get some legislation the fix it. New york i but i appreciate as usual the way you ask the question. Of all the people who have insurance, 85 dont get their insurance through the insurance plan, this exchange. That 25 doesnt apply to 85 of the population. Of those that it does apply to, as you said, the vast majority will get an increased subsidy for the increase in the premium. But there are things we have to do. We should be in a position where we are providing a greater subsidy for young people to get into the marketplace that cant afford to get in because when theyre in, what that does is bring a whole group of Healthy People into the system. Instead of whats caused this increase in premiums, which is very sick people signed up and got in. There are other things we have to do. Dickerson if those fixes arent made, though, the trend line is. If things stay as they are, no legislation to fix those problems youve identified, then it seems in peril. I dont think its in peril. Its not working as well as it should, but heres what happens. You still have no one can be denied Hillary Clinton for preexisting condition in or out of the system. You still have children being able to stay on their parents Hillary Clinton until theyre age 26. You still have women not being able to be charged more than men. There are a whole range of things that are still justified, but its not as good as it should be. It would not imperil it, causing it to be not able to function. Christa where is this on the priority arist of the new president . I think its going to be very high on hillarys. Well, assuming its hillary, on her priority list. Dickerson it has to be . I think it has to be. I think its important. Christa well have more of our interview with the Vice President in our next half hour. Coming up next, new Battleground Tracker polls taken after the f. B. I. Made the announcement on friday. Well tell you whether it looks like this october surprise will have any effect on the election. With new cabinets this wfrom this shop, house, with handles designed here, made here, shipped from here, on this plane flown by this pilot, who owns stock in this company, that builds big things and provides benefits to this woman, with new cabinets. They all have insurance crafted personally for them. Not just coverage, craftsmanship. Not just insured. Chubb insured. Dickerson and were back with anthony salvanto. Anthony, you went into into the field after this news came out. What did you find . Well, everybody has heard about it almost immediately by saturday. And partisans went right away into their respective camps some republicans said this is bad. They expect the emails eventually read to be further damaging to Hillary Clinton. Democrats said, well, its probably more of what we already know, and its not so bad, theyre not changing their vote. There are some of the folks who were unsure on the fence who said it might make them a little less likely to back Hillary Clinton, and what that tells you is as with many controversies that come up in the campaign, its not as much about eroding support for a candidate and its not for her, but it is limiting in the sense that she may have trouble now reaching out beyond the voters that she already has, those who are on the fence, and maybe a little bit limiting there. Dickerson quickly, how many are on the fence . Very few. Very, very few. Youre talking about less than 10 in most of these states, sometimes as low as 2 to 5 . Dickerson one thing democrats have been hope, praying, is that what they say is these views are baked in about what they think about Hillary Clintons server. In fact, she even said that. Did you find any of that evidence in the polling . Yes. Some of the argument here is that this goes to those honest and trust worthy numbers which weve talked about all year. Theyre very low for Hillary Clinton and theyve been low. Thats part of what they mean by baked in. In fact, onethird of her supporters also say shes not honest and trustworthy and are voting for her anyway. Theyre making their decisions on other criteria of how she compares to donald trump on a number of other metrics. The october surprise isnt what it used to be in the sense that today we are so divided and partisans are so hard and fast in their views that when they get new information, they dont necessarily process it in a decisionmaking way. They filter it through what they already think. Christa all right. So theyve already made their decision about Hillary Clinton and new information isnt going the change their mind. Anthony, well look forward to talking to you later in the show. And well have more to come. Back in a moment. Youre making money now, are you investing . Well, ive been doing some research. Let me introduce you to our broker. How much does he charge . I dont know. Okay. Uh, do you get your fees back if youre not happy . dad laughs wow, youre laughing. Thats not the way the world works. Well, the worlds changing. Are you asking enough questions about the way your wealth is managed . Wealth management, at charles schwab. Right. In. Your. Stomach watch this . Yikes, that ice cream was messing with you, wasnt it . Try lactaid, its real ice cream, without that annoying lactose. Lactaid. Its the milk that doesnt mess with you. Impressive linda. It seems age isnt slowing you down. But your immune system weakens as you get older increasing the risk for me, the shingles virus. Ive been lurking inside you since you had chickenpox. I could surface anytime as a painful, blistering rash. One in three people get me in their lifetime, linda. Will it be you . And thats why linda got me zostavax, a single shot vaccine. Im working to boost lindas immune system to help protect her against you, shingles. Zostavax is a vaccine used to prevent shingles in adults fifty years of age and older. Zostavax does not protect everyone and cannot be used to treat shingles or the nerve pain that may follow it. You should not get zostavax if you are allergic to gelatin or neomycin, have a weakened immune system or take high doses of steroids are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. The most common side effects include redness, pain, itching, swelling, hard lump warmth or bruising at the injection site and headache. Its important to talk to your doctor about what situations you may need to avoid since zostavax contains a weakened chickenpox virus. Remember one in three people get shingles in their lifetime, will it be you . Talk you to your doctor or pharmacist about me, single shot zostavax. Youve got a shot against shingles. Through internet essentials, comcast has connected over 3 Million People in need to lowcost internet at home. Welcome to a brighter future. Comcast. Dickerson welcome back the face the nation. Im john dickerson. We have more Battleground Tracker numbers. In pennsylvania, Hillary Clinton holds an eightpoint lead over donald trump, 4840. North carolina shows a tight race, clinton leads trump there 48 to 45 . Its also a threepoint margin in colorado where Hillary Clinton is at 42 and trump is at 39 . And in arizona, a republicanleaning state where clinton is doing well, trump leads by just 2 points, 44 to 42 . We continue with the mastermind behind the Battleground Tracker along with our friends at u governor, thats cbs news director of election anthony salvanto. All right, anthony, inside those states, what are you seeing in terms of turnout for beth sides . Okay. The first thing you want to look at is the party split, how Many Democrats there are for Hillary Clinton, how many republicans there are for donald trump. Because on the latter, donald trump has lagged among republicans relative to how Hillary Clinton is doing with democrats throughout this campaign. Thats still the case. So hes still not getting that full support from republicans, and she is getting close to 9 in 10 democrats, and thats adding up to effectively the difference in a lot of these states. Thats sort of mixed in there with a little bit of a growing gender gap. I keep my eye on that. The difference between how men vote and how women vote. More women leaning toward Hillary Clinton, more men going toward donald trump. Dickerson so in pennsylvania, our finding is that 78 of the republicans are behind donald trump. Would that explain why hes down eight points in pennsylvania . It does. And that sounds like a lot and it feels like a lot, but its not enough. What that tells you. Dickerson 78 is not enough . 78 is not enough. A typical republican will get close to 90 . Even when you heard governor pence talk about republicans needing to come home, thats what hes talking about. Theyre probably seeing the same things in their data. There are a lot of republicans for donald trump, but not enough to make up the difference numerically. Christa so hes having huge rallies, but he needs more than the big rally groups. Dickerson let me ask you now about in terms of changing the dynamic of the race. Theres a lot of voting thats already taken place as we talked about with governor pence, 21 Million People. Does that make it harder to shift things now . It does. 21 Million People have already cast ballots. Of course, those votes are in the bank. Places like North Carolina, and at least on party registration, its not a perfect measure and doesnt mean we know how you vote, but party registration, democrats are outpacing republicans. That tells you now Hillary Clinton doesnt have as far to go from here to election day, and donald trump needs to change minds, but get consistent turnout from here to election day or even on election day. That makes it a little bit harder. Dickerson anthony, thank you so much. Joining us now is Clinton Campaign senior strategist joel benenson. Joel, for the last four months clinton ally, people in the Clinton Campaign have told us that the f. B. I. Director made his determination about the clinton server, and theyve been using him to prove that that story is over and done. With now it seems like the Clinton Campaign is really going after the f. B. I. Director. Are people going to believe it, that switch in position . Well, i think you had an intervening event here, john. The f. B. I. Director took an unprecedented action that weve seen in the last 24 to 48 hours. A former Law Enforcement official, both democratic and republican, having served in the administrations of prlts from either party, have said this is contrary to policy at the department of justice, the statement he put out on friday, and its unprecedented. You dont take actions within 60 days of an election. He did that. Now we need to get to the facts. And i think in fairness you cant compare what happened in june after a long and thorough investigation versus a statement that he put out, unprecedented, told his own employees in a letter, i didnt want to create any misleading impression here, but thats exactly what he did some the bottom line is we need to know the facts. Weve called on him to release any information he has right away. But now it turns out, i think theres another news report that says he actually has no information, which makes this all very curious and very questionable, and i think thats why you see Law Enforcement and hear Law Enforcement professionals questioning what he did. Dickerson you know, it seems that the strategy here from the Clinton Campaign is to basically keep raising questions about him, keep pointing out that theres been criticism of him. Thats something donald trump has been doing for the last four months. Is that really the conversation you want to have going into the closing end of this election . Well, no. In fact, were going to have a closing election about what kind of country were going to be. Were going to answer questions when they come up as you just poised them to me, but i think what vote rergs talking about and thinking about now, and i think anthony just mentioned this, is what of these two candidates is going to make this the kind of country we want to be, one where the economy works for people like them, not just those at the top, a person who really has the steadiness and what it takes to be commanderinchief and n a challenging world, someone who knows how to work with our allies as opposed to donald trump, who has threatened to abandon our nato allies and called for more countries to have nuclear weapons. I think at the end of the day, thats what youre going to see. The other thing thats important, and i think anthony touched on this a moment ago, john, is we are seeing record turnout in the early vote. He mentioned North Carolina. Mecklenburg county yesterday alone compared to four years ago the same day, the saturday nine days out from the election, the number of voters was up 16 over what president obama turned out in 2012, and he carried that county by 34 points. Dickerson joe, let me ask you one more question, you mentioned that this is unprecedented, what the f. B. I. Director did, but isnt that essentially the result of the unprecedented acts that Hillary Clinton took by having an offthebook server, by deleting emails based on whatever emails she decided would be delete, isnt she and isnt this an unprecedented moment because were in an unprecedented case where the secretary of state had her own hope serve center. Look, shes addressed. This director comey addressed it after a thorough investigation in june. What happened on friday, we dont even know if it has any relevance. Thats why were saying, lets see the facts here. The action he took was unprecedented. He put out a statement to congress, which he has no obligation whatsoever to do so, and probably no requirement under any circumstances. But then he said in a letter to his own employees, we have to avoid creating a misleading impression. We now know he has no facts, and he made a Public Statement about a potential inquiry. He has no information. He should put out all 2 facts he has, clarify. This and i think thats totally reasonable under the circumstances and the critique hes getting from other Law Enforcement professionals. Dickerson joel benenson, were out of time. Thanks so much for being with us. Well be right back with our panel. Ck b st onto the shag carpeting. And his pants ignited into flames, causing him to stop, drop and roll. Luckily jack recently had geico help him with renters insurance. Because all his belongings went up in flames. Jack got full replacement and now has new pants he ordered from banana republic. Visit geico. Com and see how affordable renters insurance can be. Dickerson were back now with our politics panel. Susan page is u. S. A. Todays Washington Bureau chief, ben domenech is the publisher of the federalist. Amy walter is the editor of the Cook Political Report and Patrick Healy covers politics for the new york times. Susan page, whats the real fallout of this disclosure from friday, or do we know . We dont know for sure. Well know as more polling goes on. I think it does do a couple things. I think it helps donald trump consolidate support among republicans who have been reluck tan the support him. I think its hard for Hillary Clinton to deliver some voters who probably were going to vote for her and its enthusiastic. And its a lifeline to Senate Candidates like pat toomey and kelly aidea and marco rubio who have been in danger but now are in a stronger position to argue voters ought to reelect them. Dickerson what do you make the clinton response to this . It was to go right at comey and to keep it up. Theyre on war footing. Thats what the last nine days could be like. They were going to hope it would be trump and fitness they would be talking about most. Now they have to deal with headlines and clinton and f. B. I. Thats not what they want. They have few targets, john. They cant go after really huma abedin and Anthony Weiner. They decided they cant throw her under the bus. Comey is who they have. But it creates such awkwardness. This is president obamas f. B. I. Director. It gets back into Loretta Lynch and the bill clinton meeting like you brought up. So whether they can move undecided voters in places like North Carolina and florida when the last week is all the people are talking about is trump is able to make that case, its going to be a really big challenge for them. Dickerson and we see what governor pence is doing, what donald trump is doing, which is using this as a magnet to attach all kinds of other things, the revelations this week about bill clinton and his foundation and using that to enrich himself, the general, as donald trump said, the general drama that surrounds the clintons, and if there is this fight between the Clinton Campaign and the director of the f. B. I. , isnt that playing out the drama right in front of voters as they are. It is. Certainly talking to a lot of republicans, particularly in the senate to susan pages point this week. I was hearing that line from die hard over and over. You ask for the miracle, i give you the f. B. I. I think in in case, what it does is it forces a situation where the Clinton Campaign had wanted to focus in these final days on trying to expand the map, on trying to increase a potential likelihood of winning the senate. I think it prevents them from doing that. It gives a lot of momentum i think for republicans and for people like mike pence to make the case, come back home. You have to stop the clinton machine. You dont want to relive the 90s scandals all over again. That puts the Clinton Campaign in a difficult position. Theyre still the oddsonfavorite to win. They may be stumbling toward the end here. Dickerson the alternative argument, any republican if donald trump is having trouble, any republican who thinks they cant and the number of times this week in talking to republican strategists. The number of times they brought up that overheard video of donald trump talking about sexual abuse, thats the thing thats hurting republicans getting to yes about donald trump. Is this really going to interrupted that is the question . Is Hillary Clintons problem going to help them get over their problems and worries about donald trump . So theres been a remarkable consistency in the pattern of this race from the very beginning, which is when the spotlight is on one candidate, it benefits the other candidate. When were talking about donald trump, Hillary Clinton poll numbers go up. When we talk about Hillary Clinton, his numbers get better. Hillary clinton, of course, was doing great when we were focusing not just on the tape, but i would argue the real slide for donald trump began after the first debate and when he got into the fight with miss universe. I think that really cemented where the focus was, which was about temperament. I hear this over and over again who are conflicted between someone they dont trust and somebodys whose temperament they dont like and the temperament piece is a bigger determine unanimous. I dont know this changes to trust. Im going to go back to trust. I dont trust her and im going to vote for him. The temperament piece still seems a bigger challenge for trump than trust does for Hillary Clinton. The other question is whether or not this focus on comey is not just to try to, because they dont have anything else to do, but to try to help shore up their own flagging base, right . Have a bad guy, which is james comey and the f. B. I. To, get their base all fired up. See, theyre trying to steal it from Hillary Clinton. Theyre trying to still it at the last minute. Dickerson theyre all but saying the word ribbed. The great irony is all these editorial boards were saying that criticizing james comey is undermining the rule of law, et cetera, et cetera. This time the rule of law, the Clinton Campaign has turned it around on him. I understand to the point about 2 inability of them to find somebody else to point to. The real problem is abadin testified in june she had turned over all the devices. She was not aware that these emails were on this device. And its one of these situations where they cant find someone else. They have to have comey. Dickerson theres such awkwardness within the campaign. This is Hillary Clintons closest aide. Its not as if they can put her on the 2 hot seat and sort of grill her. But their bigger advantage is that Hillary Clintons operation has built a real ground game, states like florida and North Carolina, which they feel like they have to win, and now they need to clarify the message to energize those people and get them out. Frankly, if they cant do it with trump and fitness, comey may be in defending our girl, as Michelle Obama said, may be really the hope they have. Of course, they have a reasonably good case against the f. B. I. Director. They have people serving republican Justice Departments saying this is inappropriate what hes done. Its a violation of guidelines. But the Clinton Campaigns problem is that the reason theyre in this fix is because Hillary Clinton inexplicably chose to have a private email server and that bill clinton went to Loretta Lynch when their planes were intersecting on a tarmac and head made it impossie for her to stop him, which he might have been able to do. If that meeting hadnt taken place, she wouldnt have recused herself. And we know she was a posed to. That race was already. We were already seeing signs of tightening in these battleground states and nationally before we had this f. B. I. Investigation. The spotlight was no longer on donald trump. The debates were in the rearview mirror. He hadnt gone on to twitter to attack anybody. The focus was on the Clinton Foundation and obamacare. Dickerson what did you make of the race tightening then . Did you feel like that was. I felt like that was real, but i felt like it was driven mostly by your last point, the news about obamacare premium, which affect so many people across the country. I think thats the sort of thing that matters even more to voters than some of these email issues. But we have to keep in mind, so many millions of people have already voted at this stage. Early voting starts so early this year that a lot of people have already cast their ballots and it remains to be seen whether that can make any difference on the president ial level. That being said, i do think it could be a situation where the final story lines of this Campaign Today is could the republicans do better when it comes to the senate as opposed to expectation . Oos. Hes going to be in michigan next week, new mexico, wisconsin. Hes got other states to worry about. How do you read those trips . Well, whats really interesting about where were seeing this map shake out in a police like North Carolina, which was a real push for the democrats in 2012, obviously obama didnt carry it after he carried it in 2008. She seems to be doing well. Shes struggling in the rust belt straits. Not struggling. Shes ahead but not by the margins obama was. The challenge for donald trump has always been, if hes going to win this thing, he has to get into 240ez socalled blueball states where but wall states where the democrats havent lost for years and years an years because hes going to lose a place like North Carolina. He could lose in a state like florida. Because arizona is in play. You have to go to where the most opportune environment. Is and thats where w white, workingclass voters. It may not working, but at this point its likely his only shot. Its a danger, though, because Kellyanne Conway, Donald TrumpsCampaign Manager is a pollster. Last night she made the case that michigan and new mexico, they have seen some change in their numbers, some reason to give them hope. I said, you know, kellyanne, dont you need to be on the air in states like florida and pennsylvania and North Carolina in a bigger way where you really need to win, and she said, well mr. Trump wants to go to these places. Mr. Trump thinks we can still win with the voters that amy was just talking about. It goes back to the danger at the beginning of this campaign, which is that you have an outsider what who so believes in his own ability to win over the people. He sees the adulation at these rallies. He thinks he can win anywhere and he needs to be focused on the state he has to win. Christa a week left. Thanks to all of you. Biden signaled hes not interested. We want to conclude with the Vice President s reflections on his 47 years in Public Service and what he plans to do next. What does it mean to be an obama whisperer . Well, you know, i had the advantage, i think its fair to say, of knowing an awful lot of the people we brought into the cabinet longer and better than barack. Excuse me, than the president. And although they had enormous respect for the president , they werent as used to dealing with him as i was. So i have. And he doesnt wear his feelings on his sleeve all the time. So. Dickerson you wear them on both sleeves. Unfortunately. The president kids. He says, joe and i, we make up for each others shortings. He makes up for mine. He has very few. So i have his confidence. I am a close friend of his. He knows he can trust me 1,000 . Dickerson the number of lunches you will have with the president is doctrineling. Yes. Were still going to hang out a little bit. John youre going to hang out after its over . Yeah. Dickerson you might have longer lunches. Yeah. Dickerson do you talk about the exit . We do. We talk a lot about what each of us are going to do and what we might be able to do together. The bottom line is both of us feel that there are the things that motivated us to get into politics and theyre still the things that shape our lives and our interest and make us happy. So youre going to see the president deeply involved in a lot of the things hell continue to be involved inch and im not going away. You know, everything from this issue of violence against women to income inequality to the cancer moon shot. Im going to devote the rest of my life to this. Dickerson whats it going to feel like . I dont know. I dont know. I must tell you, i. I know theres an awful lot that i have access to do. But i have never. From the time ive been 26, every morning ive gotten up, i have. Somebody hands me a card that has my schedule on it, and, you know, i know what im about to do. I know what i want to work on, so its going to be an adjustment. I honestly dont. I have enjoyed. I have been so proud of being involved in Public Service that im not sure exactly how im going to do it other than the structure of, you know, american political system. Dickerson youve been asked a thousand times if you regret deciding not to run. Was there every a moment in the last year where you said, boy, im glad i didnt run . Well, i guess yes in that some of the vitriol that exists today, its not some of the stuff. I just am glad my grandkids, how do you respond to a guy on stage when he. I mean, im just happy. Let me put it another way. A woman who runs my office has a daughter that is in i think sixth grade. I called her on columbus day, which was a holiday to, check my schedule the next day, and i said, did you watch the debate, and her comment was, my daughter had a girlfriend over from class. They were supposed to watch the debate. The first few minutes i had to turn it off. I didnt want my daughter seeing this debate. The stuff of, you know. Anyway, there are sometimes im. But look, i think i made the right decision. For my family and for me. And i think hillarys going to be a hell of a good president. Dickerson in 1972 when you announced you were running for the senate, this is what you said. God almighty, you did your homework. Dickerson were divided people. We have too often allowed our differences to prevail among us. We have too often allowed ambitious men to play off those differences for pllg gain. We have too often retreated behind our differences when no one tried the lead us beyond them. It feels like you could give that speech today. I could, but i tried my best to lead us beyond them. I think for a significant period of our time we did. You know, history runs in cycles. You know, i say the young people out there, they said, well, why get involved now with the dysfunction in government. We were more divided substantively when i ran and made that speech than today. The vietnam war, the womens movement, the Civil Rights Movement was still not finished. The whole environmental movement. It divided families. It divided friends. Those things. People didnt speak to one another over them. And yet my generation did, we did get involved. We did make a difference. We did change things in the 70s and the 80s. And it is. It moves and the abuse of power is always, always just right there and reached for by people who shouldnt be in power. And you need people to speak up to us. Speak out against it. And thats what i have tried to do my whole career. I dont make myself out to be a hero. I dont think youll find anybody in public life i dealt with that i have ever not tried to bridge differences with, not be honest with. Dickerson on your last day of office, what are you going to do . What am i going to do . Im going to go home and begin to figure out what i do for the rest of my life. And i think its going to. I hope to be able to do the same things im doing now out of office. Dickerson mr. Vice president , thanks very much. Thank you, john. Appreciate it. Oh, its actually. S your sfx short balloon squeal its ver. Sfx balloon squeals ok can we. Sfx balloon squeals im being so serious right now. I really want to know how your coffee is. Its. Sfx balloon squeals hahahaha, i had a 2nd balloon goodbye oof, that milk in your coffee was messing with you, wasnt it . Yeah. Happens to more people than you think. Try lactaid, its real milk, without that annoying lactose. Mmm. Good right . Yeah. Lactaid. Its the milk that doesnt mess with you. Dickerson thats it for us today. Thanks for watching.
