Hours, at 4 30 this afternoon, pope francis will appear at Independence Hall to address the crowd there. He will speak about immigration, and religious freedom. It is expected to be a centerpiece of his philadelphia visit. We have a crew already on the mall ready to bring this to you live including what will be a papal parade, little procession, around Independence Mall, and that certainly will be an opportunity for pope to once again become very spontaneous in his response to the crowd. Well, pat, the parade across the ben franklin today has been rather light, to say the least, this is a live picture from our camera, on top of the Veterans Multi Service center. This is where many will cross into philadelphia. There is a good group there, but it is rather quiet all day long, so walking over to the city from camden, new jersey. And the excitement will be building as you can imagine to a fever pitch as Independence Mall. Really within the next hour or so pope francis will deliver his message to the world from the same lecturn that Abraham Lincoln used for his gettysburg address. So, i learned something very interesting about that. It is actually set inside a ceramic plastic case. And so thatting in can happen to it, so that the holy father can hold onto either side. Oh, okay. Yes, it is really supposed to be like a great otherwise it is such look, dont touch, even when the popes involved . Such a thin lecturn, that it is really hard to make sure that it is actually stable. And i was thinking the word i was thinking of was plexiglass, thats really what it is. More than 20,000 Ticket Holders will be there, and they are going to be hearing him, going to be powerful moment again, our jan carabeo is live for us, january, im sorry, did i steel a little bit of your story when i was explaining about the lecturn . Reporter you know what, it is okay, pat, thats great part of the story. A very fitting area to have the pope come here and talk about immigration and religious freedom. After all it is the most famous and most historic square mile in america after all. As we go closer and closer to pope francis arrival here, were enjoying number of beautiful performances, by multicultural groups, members of the immigrant community, this is a shot of the dancers taking the stage right now, than is the ticketed area where were coming to you live right now. Visitors are still arriving here, that why you see some white chairs still empty. There are 24,000 ticketed spots just this this area. Check it out, check this video out. This tells the story little better right now, thousands of people are packed into the general access area, many of them have been here since 6 00 a. M. When the secured areas opened. Were told that along the streets there are at least five rose of seats waiting for the pontiff. Theyve been watching the holy father on these jumbrotrons, all over the area. When he arrives here, pope francis will first bless the cross, and then walk to the front door of Independence Hall, park superintendent Cynthia Mcleod will greet the holy father there, take him through the hall to the state, so what a treat for her. Thats where the pope will speak about row lidge us freedom and i am graduation. There is perhaps again no better place than this. This crowd is ready to see it. Take a listen. I really appreciative about the tone that he is bringing, talking about partisanship, or different business, bringing people together, see how we all share the same human at this. This is like a moment that were excited about it, hopefully remember this moment for the rest of our lives. Back out here live on Independence Hall, in old city, you can see, it is now becoming a party, as everyone gets anxious visiting the holy father again, expected to speak here sometime around 4 45. Getting excited, too, pat, jim, back to you. Looks like a crowd out there. All ticketed so i think well see it fill in very quickly, especially when the people have tickets, they usually come little late thinking gee, im get in, i have a ticket. So well see how that transpires over the next couple of hours. The crowds are keeping a steady stream coming on to the parkway, waiting to see the pope during this world meeting of families, this family festival that is this evening. It is a good group right now slowly making its way in here, greg argue owes, at 22nd and the parkway i believe right now, where the excitement continues to build. Lou things out there, greg . Theyre fueling up right now, waiting for his holiness, of course, i can tell this really has transformed the parkway. Normally were packed with cars, now like i mentioned earlier, packed with people. Tens of thousands of people expected to arrive. They are living as we speak. Of course theyre here to see his holiness as he arrives around 7 30 tonight for the festival of families. Now, i want to introduce alex and his beautiful wife ann from wayne, pennsylvania. You guys just got in here watch do you think about the crowds so far . It is great. There is a ton of people, as you said it, keeps filling up. It is beautiful event celebrating the family. Both of these guys are Catholic School teachers, correct . Yes. So anna youre here with child begin deed. And you wanted to come out regardless, i mean, despite the crowds, the possible stress youre here . Absolutely, because it is the world meeting of families. Were starting our own family, were lucky to have both of our families here with us. My family came down from boston, his family from north wales. So you see the entire family right here, everyone just getting into town, tens of thousands of people packing the parkway. And alex, i have to ask you, you want to get the shot of the pope. The blessing im sure, too, right . Of course, definitely, anything we can do to help the baby out, but yes, great day. Any baby names pick out . Maybe francis. It is climbing the rang now. It is climbing the ranks specially because you guys are here. Little bit after wait of course, pope francis is expected to arrive at Independence Mall any second for his address there. And then around 7 30 tonight, hes going have the papal parade, where tens of thousands of folks all throughout the area here will line the ben franklin parkway, and of course try to get that amazing picture possibly even a blessing. We will be here all throughout the evening, of course you can interact with us on social media, cbsphillypope. For now live on the parkway, greg argos, cbs3, Eyewitness News. All right, greg, thank very much for sharing those stories, thank you. And were all positioned all over the parkway, our colleague, nicole brewer, i can actually see her over there in the distance. We would like to go to her live now. Nicole, how are you doing over there . Reporter yes, im just down the way, good afternoon, guys. Were here in front of the main stage on the parkway of course, where the festival of families is planned for later today. Of course an alist line up of celebrities, also the pope expected to address the crowd tonight, but take a look over my shoulder here, ill show you whats happening at this hour. Ahead of show time, already opened up the gates to those folks lucky you have no have a seat. Soso hearing a lot of music coming from a that way. Stage is set, crowds gathering, many traveling across the globe to be part of this historic occasion, in some cases, just crossing the city or the state, including pennsylvania governor tom wolf, who actually came here to the parkway earlier this morning, like the pontiff. He was out working the crowd, shaking hands, taking selfies, you know what they say, when in rome, or in this case philly. But speaking of the holy father, short time later Governor Wolf did get some face time with pope francis, as part of a group that welcomed him at Atlantic Aviation at the Philadelphia International airport. The governor told me he was looking forward to meeting pope francis, and having that opportunity to speak with him directly, Governor Wolf expected to make a speech on independent malls later this afternoon, so he will have a chance to speak with pope francis. The city of philadelphia is the perfect host city for the papal visit, like all pennsylvanians, just very proud to welcome the pontiff. I think this is real a prepare re ate place to be, the message he bridges, fairness, justice, openess, thats what pennsylvania is about, william penn founded this commonwealth on the basis of freedom of conscious there is nation, our democracy born here in philadelphia, Perfect Place to talk about justice and fairness. Justice, fairness, his humility, his humanity, thats all that has rest own ate dollars with people across the globe, they call it the francis effect. Real when it comes down to is people just really like him. Thats what is expected to draw the crowds, perhaps million or more, here on the parkway. So such exciting day, pat, jim, i know youre enjoying this as much as i am. We send it back to you or rather we sends to break and have more coverage after this. Welcome back everyone for pope francis visit to philadelphia. Its been an extraordinary morning so far, from the time that he landed at the airport then the motorcade over to the basilica, and now hes taking a little bit after respit, if you will, at the seminary. I understand he was to have lunch, then little rest, and hell need it because he will be meeting the fateful, my goodness, when he finally gets to Independence Mall then here to the ben franklin parkway. And the fought full making their way from all part of the delaware valley, including from new jersey, so we will go check in with cleve bryan over near the ben franklin bridge, cleve, how are things going over there . Reporter jim, pat, its been wonderful day, getting the second wave of people. There was a lot this morning, the after back fast crowd, now the after lunch crowd. See many people taking that hike up the bring bridge, it is a mile and a half to get over the bridge. Total of about 5 miles from downtown camden, to where the pilgrims want to go. Bike brick aid going, little exciting little while ago, group from newark, international people, broke into a Worship Service right there at the foot of the bridge. Speaking of international, people from all throughout the world, coming from curse, now in camden, this is irmeana. Tell me why you are making the trek over the bridge to see the pope today . It is very important for me, because we are catholic, and great day to meet the pope, see the pope, and just being in his area, in the vicinity of this humble, humble man. For a lot of people, pilgrimage is a spiritual journey. Will you be feeling something, are you feeling something now as you are about to go over the bridge . Yes, yes. Of course you do. It is ablation g for united states, for all over the world. And you feel it, yes. Reporter these are the store thats were hearing from people, gahm, the philippines, ex which door, dominican republic, people from all throughout the world are coming to camden so they can hop over the bridge to see the pope. It has just been an extraordinary day so far here in camden. They say the numbers are little bit lower than they expected. But it is not about volume. It is about quality. And the people that have come here just have had the spirit of energy and excitement to see the pope. We expect to see a lot more tomorrow, pretty much what the feeling is here tomorrow will be the bigger arrival for crowds as they go over to see the public mass. But again, this is just a wonderful trip for those who want to make t they are bringing water, theyre banking bike sissel, you can push strollers, the restrictions here, are fairly loose, as far as what you can bring, as long it is nothing dangerous, there is a check point that everybody goes through, with state police, the Delaware River port authority. Water being given out from the red cross, there is portapotties you can use, so this is everything thats available to make this as enjoyable experience as possible. Reporting live in camden, cleve bryan, cbs news. Well things seem to be going well there, pat, thats good news, we have another music check now dealing with what do you think is this is . Cool jazz . Im not sure. But whatever it is, good stuff. Good stuff. Will keep everybody entertained throughout the evening. Holy father out of the seminary. And our jim mel worth, with our sister station kyw news radio; joining us on the phone, to tell us about that experience, jim, what was that like when the holy father pulled up, and all the seminarians burst into song . The young man at the seminary becomes 150 of them lined up on the stairs of the seminary, now, known for months this moment was coming, and, you know there is watched security fences went up around the seminary, then finally, as the in you famous fiat came into site, along wynnewood avenue, huge cheer from the crowd, and a song they describe as their anthem, their version, where he is a jolly good fellow, translated means lord save our father, list on the day we call on you, after, that bit of surprise as the seminarians prompted by seminary rector ship, tim thigh senior, sang song we all know, happy birthday archbishop charles chaput, his 71st birthday. Posted for quick photo, then the pope went into the seminary for much deserved rest between todays event, before he heads back down to Independence Mall for this afternoon event. Certain print done by the lenox cop . Thats far from what we are, understandably so, with the excitement recalled awe way from him, so little difficult to see exactly what was going on, with all of the excitement as the seminarians finally got to be around their leader. Okay, they sure did. Jim, thank you so much. Always a pleasure. You know me, the consumer reporter. Jim donovan has the answer to my question. So yes, there was a company, lenox, created and donated 40 set of china in it vintage republican pattern, for the popes visit, pardon the glasses, im getting to that age, the five piece settings were valued at 258 apiece. They also donated gold trim flat wear, stem wear, several platters and serving bowls. And in addition, lenox is donated a five piece set of china with the vatican seal in hopes pope francis will use this for his meals when he returns to the vatican. I dont know, i think that is a little too fancy for him. I was going to say this is a bit fancy smancy. All donated between August August 24th and september 14th, macys delivered to the seminary more than quarter Million Dollars worth of home decor item. Can you imagine that . About that was not just for the holy father . Yes. Bedding, tables, lounge chairs, part of some of their collection, as well. And sleeping on sterns and foster model bed from make is with ecofriendly foam mattress. I think thats great. Specially in light of the fact that he has sky at did a. Exactly, need good night sleep. He will come out of that sleeping tonight at the seminary. It is a miracle. It is a miracle i feel so much better. So our vittoria has been on the road, i think in her sneaks as opposed to her high heels this time. And she is joining us, i think, from Independence Mall, torrey, tell us what it is that you experienced today. Im getting emotional, as a catholic myself, from philadelphia, this crowd that this crowd gives to you, it touches your heart. I was so fortunate earlier on today i started my morning at st. Joes Prep High School right at 17th and girard, right in our own community in philadelphia. And i was accompanied or i accompanied 450 student, friends, family, from all over the country, even from canada, from puerto rico, a group of jesuits. And we walked from st. Joes Prep High School all the way down to Independence Mall. And i am a telling you, these kids were so excited for this moment. A moment that theyll never forget in their whole lives. I have to be honest recalling i felt like i was back in high school where my nuns, i went to saint bass attack add any, i felt like my nuns were leading me. The president of the school, which is father john, father john, he was just fantastic. He said he actually met pope francis years ago when he was in argentina, that was fun story, but the excitement felt, not only with the walk with the student but even coming up to the ticketing areas you had to hear what some our own Philadelphia Police officers said. They said weve never had so many thank yous in one day, just been amazing, and i think that really speaks volume, as to the community that is coming out today that are just grateful to take in this occasion, grateful to be here, and to feel what this feels like. And if you can see behind me, part of my shaking, i cant stop shake willing, really magical and powerful feeling, take a look at Independence Mall. Thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of people. Really, pat, jim, it is just such an honor, and i really cant even believe that im here right now, as im sure everyone thats supporting with us today can only on top that far i just want it say if you are watching at home, you know someone in the crowd, ill be holding this up, cbs philly pope. Weve been ive been trying to take as many pictures as possible, videos, sharing with you guys, my experience as well as the st. Joes prep experience, and really powerful day. And i cant wait. I cant wait to try and get my glimpse of the people, too, so i feel like im in the midst just like everyone else experiencing this magical and poor full day. And tomorrow, i went to Lasalle University college, and tomorrow i will be doing another pilgrimage from Lasalle College all the way down broad street and throughout the north philadelphia community, down through to the parkway. And even though getting pie work out today, definitely work out, havent minded doing, and i cant wait to do that tomorrow, as alumni of lasalle, again as a catholic. So amazing, i just want to flip around this camera for a second, to give you good visual. Im managed to get my way on top of this platform. But look at the crowd beneath me. Thousands and thousands of people, if you can try and see, the location that were at right now, obviously Independence Mall. Right between fifth and sixth here, on market street, and the festivities have been going underway for quite some time as you know. And folks here at have been so patient. Really just so filled of gratitude to be part of the moment and history. And it is funny im actually catching smiles, like, she is smiling at me through the gate there. Even i think not just to be on television right now, but to be here and get her glim p of pope francis. So really, ive just been im left speechless, guys, really i am. It is a very powerful, powerful feeling. You can feel the energy in the air. Really just touches you right at your heart. So it is a very lucky and h. U. P. Bling feeling, and im very grateful to be here on behalf of everyone. Back to you guys. Tori, thank you. If she can get pope francis to holdup her cbsphillypope, i will take her on a shopping trip. And that might motivate her to run right up to the front of the line. You know tori, she and i, consumers at heart. Oh, goodness. Okay, so, gospel, smooth jazz to gospel. Wonderful. It is absolutely amazing, from the Embassy Suite. Balcony overlook that area, so great shot. Now, if youre headed down to see the pope, youll encounter enormous lawn enforcement presence in the center city area. Not only local, but national guards, members as well. Good tunes going on there right now, great weather, here we are 28 floors up from the 17th and parkway, logan square, i mean, it is jam packed now. Every time i look bun down there, more and more people filling in, why not . Shaping up to see late as noon and early evening for the festival of families. Thats great news right now. Lets break it down for you, tell you whats happening. Just some clouds over it us, storm scan3, no threat of any rain tonight for sure. Check it out, mid to high level cloudiness, every now and then we get peak or two of sun. Bulk of the rain stays well to the south. Check it out. We zoom out. Low pressure system stuck over the carolinas with the heaviest rain off sharp, some of the rain trying to get into the southern delmarva inlay. Key prior your here, most of this rain is kept to the south. But the wind flow is coming out of the northeast, so it is a nice first weekends of fall. Check it o we have nice breeze to deal with, temperatures right now in the low 70s, pretty much uniform across the entire region because of the clouds continued northeast breeze, as far as the set up goes, again, i mention High Pressure area, kind of locks in the dry air, thats what were dealing with right now, and it is a battle between this high and low. As of now i think the high does win out. Keeping that low pressure just far enough south to keep us dry during the day, at least most of the day sunday. We still have to they in the chance for maybe shower late in the day. So heres what to expect this weekend, again gusty northeast winds along the coastal reason on, so minor coastal flooding along the coastline and in the Delaware River area, as well. It will be cooler, nice start to fall though. More clouds are around. Again we have to throw in the scatter shower chance coming in for sunday afternoon, so heres what to expect again as far as that Coastal Flood Advisory goes. It is from this afternoon all the way until midday sunday through much of south jersey and delaware, high tide coming in at 6 42, on the ocean, back base, well see high tide about an hour or two after that. So heres your sunday forecast, again the big main event going on here with the papal mass, again, the 4 00 4 00, cool, breezy, slight chance for shower, poncho in case. But again it is pretty small chance at this 4 00, are 5 00 temperatures, 72 degrees, by 7 00 ranks things up, 666789 so little cool and breezy sun, but i think well luck out and make it through most of the weekends on the dry side. Out here right now above the parkway, looking great. Comfortable temperatures right now in the 70s. More pope francis coverage coming up right after this. I am never getting married. Never. Psssssh. Guaranteed. You picked a beautiful ring. Thank you. Were never having kids. Mmmmmm. Breathe. I love it here. We are never moving to the suburbs. We are never getting one of those minivan . We are never having another kid. Im pregnant. I am never letting go. For all the nevers in life, state farm is there. Looking liver at Independence Mall where there are a series, where there are series of different ethnic groups, who are performing, to entertain the crowds there. There are thousands and thousands of people, who have gathered, to be part of this celebration, with a the holy father. And we are anticipating his speech at about 4 30 or his arrival anyway, to the parkway at about 4 30, jim hell go behind Independence Hall, will bless very sacred cross that will then be shared with latino churches throughout the country, come through the center door, he then will greet the immigrant population of philadelphia and it will be an extraordinary moment, extraordinary moment to see that interchange. They are pretty much two hubs of active at this time right now, at Independence Mall, saw vittoria short time ago. But also here on the parkway, as we get ready for the festival of families tonight, we would like to check in with nicole brewer, just across the mart, broadcast, nicole, how are you doing over there . High there, jim. High pat, doing great, like you weve got great view of the papal stage as you said will play host to the festival of families later today, seem where ever this pope goes he draws a crowd, a n this place to different being take a look at this hour where were seeing, the gates have been open, people, those lucky enough with ticket are now inside. Again, anticipating tonights performances, it will be an impressive line up, of performers annuitant ers, there dont tape also educate, we have aretha franklin, jim gaff began, so, just a lineup hereof a list celebrities will essentially be upstaged by this man, message of humility, may be more popular than any entertainer i can think of. I was out mixing, mink link with the crowd, spoke to group from st. Agnes church in west chester, chester county. Who planned to spend the week it pope watching. Heres what they had to say. From different beliefs, not only that he is a catholic, but i think he uni nice people from the friend, you know, in toward believe and bring them together. And hes so joyful, and hes so sign sewer, that i think thats why people really draw to him. We can see. We can feel t the pope is present. We can see it. We can feel t the pope is present. There certainly is an energy in the air here in philadelphia. As part of this papal visit. We know that he will be watching the concert tonight on that stage, you see here, he will be speaking during that program. Hell also be mixing and mink bling we know that there will be papal parade. This is what i am looking forward to, get took see pope francis in action in his element reaching out to folks and letting them have their time with the holy father. If i had to guess that the e moment where the pope will really shine. So many people throughout the course of today have called him a rock star. But i have to say, he is a bigger deal than any act ive seen come through this city. So, jim, pat, ill sends it over to up. I know you agree with me. Absolutely we agreeing with you nick thanks so much. Busy schedule, 4 45, pope francis expected to make his address at Independence Hall, 7 30 at the pope will arrive here if he festival of families. And that will be about an hour long celebration with the popes Closing Remarks coming around 8 35 this evening, around city hall, the parkway, some papal processions, one of them from the festival of families, going up around city hall and coming back down the parkway. Joint by very special guess, give us perspective what it is like to be in the presence of bill, professor of theology at st. Josephs university. So great have having you here. Such less trick at this here in the city and in this crowd, like none other weve seen where . I draws people in because he lost being with the regular people, good fortune of actually meeting him twice, one at the end of the june, then about a week ago. And what we see on television is the real person, so a person of tremendous charisma, warmth, care form people, i think thats what draws people in and makes them so pop lay. I think weve seen that, just his interactions, a loft pomp and circumstance surrounding his visit here to the united stay, seems most comfortable, moles at ease just when the people, just having those intimate exchanges. Sure. Go gets a choice to have lunch with congress or to go to deal with the homeless and deal with folks serving chattily churches, he would prefer the later rather than going to congress. That comes as experience from archbishop from many, years, would go actually daily shanty time to be with the poor. Figures the marge on eyes comes though who wish they do reach it. Youve been in his presence presence, seen people flap link, just to touch his in a sense, have him bless them. What was it like for you, just in that moment, just, you know, in his energy, his space . It was amazing. I had an occasion to greet him, shake his hands, he spent some time talking to us, we had gift for him from exhibit that i was working on. Practicing his english, trades out the english with psalm 133, and we said were looking forward to greeting him in philadelphia. Yes, and what do you think this means, just for our city, just to have him here, be the last leg of his trip here, historic trip to the u. S. . I think tremendous boost for philadelphia. We talk about philadelphia as the city of brotherly love. His message clearly that of love. World meeting of families that preceded his visit here, they talk about the sit of brotherly love and sisterly affection. We think about the importance of religious freedom, the commitment of our country to really welcoming immigrants, speaks very well that he chose this as the last place to come because those messages are something he want to communicate. We know the festival of families later this evening, it looks like thousands of people gathered there, and kind of the party scene, about 6 00. You can hear the drums already. Weve got the party theme going on here, along the parkway this evening. Hell be here among this crowd there is energy, than will be totally different setting. I think whatever fatigue hes experiencing among the travel will disappear, because he will get energized by the people. He will see the spirit, their face, enjoy the muse, i think well see smiling face. What about the mass for tomorrow, along the parkway, what are you expecting . Hard to know how many people will actually come. I think many of just philadelphia have been bonds lettering too many people have been scared away. But i think well see large crowd really drawn to celebrate the crowning event of the world meeting of families basically celebrating communion and union through the celebration of the eucharist, which is meaningful i think for people who are not even catholic. They can see bringing a community together. I think it will be powerful experience. Thats what i was going toy say, i am not catholic but you dont have to be to connect with this pope . I agree. We saw the pope when he made to israel. He took us in, closer jewish friends, and shake omar and eude, muslim and a jew. Did he not want to do it alone. All about brotherhood and sisterhood of all people. So i guy with you the name we had message dollars transends just something for catholics or christians. Really for all people every good will. I am so looking forward to the rest of the festivities tonight and tomorrow. So glad to have you here. Thank you so much. Youre develop welcome. Of course well keep you here for little longer, we will be coming back a little later to talk to professor here. Thats the very latest here on the 28 floor of the Embassy Suites high above the ben franklin parkway. Pat, jim, we send it back to you. The, all right, thanks very much. Bill, extraordinary gentleman, has his degree in theology. He will give us some real terrific insight, especially about the speech at the holy fathers going to give at Independence Mall. Again the speech that will be considered his center pete of his presentation here if philadelphia. So we have more entertainment. First we would like to take a look at local student with a performance after lifetime. They will be dancing at the festival of families. Our january can carstarphan has a story about their great opportunity. It is not a spelling lesson in the least. Inside this north philadelphia gymnasium. Im going to be really prepared because i have been working really hard . During the rehearsals . Always dancing in front of my family, this time in front after crowd. Susan Martinelli Shea the founder, program that started there ten years ago to help the kitchen teammate, matter and respect. Last week she and 44 student learned they will dance at the celebration of the families on the parkway. That will excitement has in you turned into focus of the at least a hour of practice i day. The student len perform swing number and this tango, a special dance, in honor of the holy father. I never new that i would dot tango, which the pope eights favorite dance. Now the group doesnt know if the pope will get to see their performance, which is schedule for early afternoon. He is not expected to be at the festival until late their day. You just never know with pope francis. My hope is that he sees jumbo hunks tron somewhere. Even if pope francis is not able to see them, the fact we are able to be a life in a time time experience is really significant for us. Until then, in the ear will whip up, and threat back to ballroom. There are two stages for the festival of families, main stage, smaller logan square stage, where student from jayz schools will perform, 12 45, saturday afternoon. Thanks for that report. Isnt that great . Look who joined us. Thats Ukee Washington, no, this is Eyewitness News family, so here we are. Exactly. You are doing wonderful job today n here and out in the field.
