In of the last hour the ntsc held a press conference here is what we know. The crash happened shortly before 8 00 this morning at six and booth streets in chester. Investigators say the train crashed into a backhoe with two workers inside. In addition to the two fatalities there are 35 injuries tonight. They were taken to local hospital. Some service is affected on north easter corridor. And the train has not yet been moved off the track. We have live team coverage. Lets begin with Eyewitness News reporter a knee too oh at the scene with it latest on the investigation. Anita. Reporter hey good evening natasha. After that deadly crash this morning, still few answers but a lot of questions remain of the biggest one being if amtrak dispatch must november workers where and when trains will be passing why was anyone on the tracks . Like most days you hear the amtrak train rolling through pennsylvania. But sunday shortly before eight a. M. It was the sound of a crash that startled the near 305 people on board the train. All you could see is a lot roof dirt and debris. A couple of fire flashes. And then came to a stop. Reporter Officials Say the train traveling from new york city to savanna georgia collided with backhoe. People actually jumped off the train. Reporter derailed injuring 35 passengers on board and killing two workers on the ground. What is not clear is why the equipment and the employees were on the traction. It does concern me. It has to concern me. Something like this, you know hitting a backhoe on a track, i mean, how could that, dont they know that trains come by here. And there had to be some kind of communication failure. Reporter thats what they are trying to figure out. Investigators covered video and data reporter that will show how fast it was moving before the crash. We will be looking at mechanical operations, signal, track, argue man performance, and survival factors. The men who died are identified as backhoe operator and a supervisor. Eyewitness News Reporter joins us live from the collision scene with more on the victims tonight. Reporter right, were told that this accident happened at this bridge west sixth and booth street you have just above me. This is an active scene 10 hours after the. Weve seen a number of trains passing through in the past hour or so. You can see police have booth street blocked off at this intersection. You can see a few oaf those ntsb investigators working on the track. They are trying to get work done before night fall. They say the victims families have been notified but Transit Agency is not releasing their names. Heres what we do know about them they are amtrak employees. 40 year veteran an 20 year veteran. Congressman bob brady believes they were doing scheduled maintenance on the track. New york senator told reporters that the two employees were a backhoe operator and a supervisor. He says its likely that human error was involved and that no equipment is ever to be operated on an active track. He says amtrak has a 20 step protocol for anyone to be on the track, that was likely not followed. He called for amtrak to review their safety procedures. Now the lead investigator on this accident offered his condolences to the victims families. Said only local agencies will be able to release their names to the public. Reporter well in a tar sharks the numbers weve gotten both from the hospital buts the total number of passengers transported and treated at actually 36. At this hour almost all of them have been treated and releaseed. Of the 16 southbound amtrak passengers transported only one remains in treatment but it expected to recover. The rest were either seen out of precaution or suffered only minor injuries and have been released. It was the same cases win the croucher medical system the spokesperson says among four facilities they saw 19 passengers in total. Two of which are still being treated at Taylor Hospital with injuries that go beyond minor. Too early to consider them serious. Into. Reporter when you check out photos just into cbs newsroom. They show after math from inside. Cars with not only twisted melt but collapse frame insulation. In one photo you can see a window had fallen into and a seat. These you are astounding images when you consider 340 passengers, just 35 or 36 were taken to hospital and at this hour only three have been admitted for further treatment. A number of them were taken to 30th street station following the crash in search of a new way to get to their final destination. Cherri gregg spoke some of them about this experience. Cory snyder, she was headed to dc for work until train 89 got to chester and hit a backhoe lodged on to the track just before eight a. M. Definitely felt it. It was very jar ring. In one of the cars some of the seats actually moved reporter snyder was one of the passengers and seven crew members on had on board the train. She like most are luckily will lucky with no injuries. Reporter red cross volunteers escorted passengers to a near by church. Some taken to the hospital. The rest were buffed to 30th street station, where they received, food, water and blankets. Given the lost of two lives most say they are grateful. I was a little shaken up at the end of the day day im blessed im still alive. What do you do in a situation like that you thank god you are okay you hope everybody else is as well e septa Officials Say many of the un injured passengers were placed on buses and driven to wilmington. Of course their next step is to catch another train to their final destination. At 30th street station cherry greg, wyw news radio Eyewitness News. This was not the first time an amtrak train has crashed in this same area in chester. On january 29th, 1988 a train with 130 people on board slammed into happen maintenance vehicle. The track was supposed to be closed at the time. 24 people were hurt. None seriously. The ntsb says the fault fell on both amtrak and a Tour Operator who fled his post after the crash. Then resigned. Its been less than a year since the deadly amtrak derailment in philadelphia on may 12th 2015 a train flipped off the traction while rounding a curve, eight people died more than 200 injured. These winds associated and the backside of the system today. Those winds were whipping last night. And through the day today check out high wind gusts amazing up to 51 Miles Per Hour today in mt. Pocono, 52 at the airport in philadelphia. Winds starting to relax a bit breezy but certainly not the kind of wind we were dealing with the first half of the day. Winds gusting into the 20 mile per hour range. Cold air settled in across the area. 46 degrees right now in Center City Philadelphia feeling more like 39 degrees. Pocono a little bit more snow is in the near future in the Higher Elevations as we head into the night.
