Jim were back waiting for the playoff to commence. The last time there was a playoff at the Farmers Insurance open was three years ago 2012. Remember this . Kyle stanley coming into the 72nd. Had the threeshot lead. Third shot. It hit at 2 00, as you say off that slope and he wasnt as fortunate as jason day. Or even lucas glover. That led to that miss for double. A triple bogey would drop him into a playoff and on the second playoff hole Brandt Snedeker hit a beautiful little shot here. Went on to save par while kyle stanley missed his par attempt giving snedeker the victory. And that 16th hole very possibly will be back in action here. Its the second playoff hole, if necessary. Of course, kyle stanley would go on to end the very next week in phoenix for a happy ending to that story. Its not every day you see a fourman playoff but thats going to be the case. Were going to be coming up to the 18 and the theres already a huge throng here. And after the tournament ends at 18 theres going to be a Memorial Service today for billy casper. Weve been talking about the great legendary golfer and man from san diego who passed away yesterday. Some family members are here. Ive seen lee eder and his wife sharon here. Of course, lee with his own tremendous record and history and difference making in the game. Its going to be quite a moment. But meantime, 18 is going to serve as the back drop for the first hole of this playoff and we have guys who can hit it a long way. Nick can i tell you whats going to happen after they hit their tee shots . Seriously, its flip a coin between these four guys. The facts that its four, id be feeling the same thing. With a twoman playoff you go into match play mode. With three others, you have to dodge bullets. Lots of ways to make four. As weve just seen, even if youre down the fairway because that hole location its so difficult to get it in the right area. The key shot is the tee shot is the key thing. But no one is going to wedge it in. Jim for jason and harris, their firstever playoff appearances. Of course, jason ended up winning the match play last year against Victor Dubuisson in extra holes but knost thats not officially kept as a record by the pga tour as being a playoff. Nick well, it feels like it because it is sudden death this is pretty exciting to be honest and im trying to get a gut feeling on whats going to happen. With four guys there are too many permutations. Peter will someone try to play aggressively and win it on 18 or lay back and wait for somebody to lose it . Nick as i said, if they hit the fairways im sure theyre going to be going for it now. Roll the dice. David im going to run out there and kick somebody if they dont. Nick you have to roll the dice and if you can reach it, chance it you hope you can hit it on the back of the green or you hit the career shot and it pitches on the back of the hill and stops. Or it becomes unplayable. And unfortunate unfortunately jason days was unplayable from over there. Jim do you fancy any ones chances over anyone else . Nick i dont know, they all hit the fairway just about . Scott stallings was the only one who missed the fairway. Three of the four guys hit the fairway before. The key is hit the short grass first and lets see what happens. I still i think thinking about it, j. B. Holmes and his caddie were having a good look at that lie. Maybe it was a sketchy lie, a little downslope and in that particular moment, the breeze did get up. Right now theres definitely less breeze than there was when j. B. Played the home. Maybe he thought the fact hed just had two long bunker shots and made a mess of both of them guys, were going to play 18, 16 17 and 18 and jeff daily of farmers since insurance is going to help us with the draw. Scott, you finished first. Youll draw first. Then jason then harris and j. B. Ok . Three. Ok, four. Harris . Ok. Harris youll lead us off. Jason . Scott, youre four. Nick these are the fortune cookies. Worlds of wisdom as well. Swing smooth. Jim word of the day is . Nick be aggressive right now. This is it. Got to go for it. Jim probably a good position to be in, first up. Nick yeah. Jim the only man of this group to birdie the 18th today. Played the north and south courses the first two days. Dead right. David right of the bunker and you never know. Nick might be ok. He is five yards longer than earlier on and looks ok. David hes got the wind helping the cut. If he can move it far enough from there from left to right. Nick could have a lie. Jim now j. B. Hes looking anxiously right also. Nick the same deal. Hell be on the bank of the bunker. Jim hes in the sand. Nick yeah, thats layup. Decisions are made. David if hes got a decent lie he might be able to reach from there and maybe put in a situation where he has to take a leap at it. Nick i doubt it. One slip and its all over. Jim jason who made the most aggressive play in regulation at the 18th, over the green in two. He loves it. Nick he loves it. And hes got the iron power to get there. Peter well, hes on a little bit of a downslope however. So well have to see once we look at the lie. Jim that is what you call center cut. Right on it. Scott stallings the last. To play the tee shot. Nick a little shorter swing. Is it swooping back . Oversweeped it. Oh, in that meg thick stuff. Wedge. Megathick stuff. Wedge. Jim definitely up there. Advantage jason day off the tee first playoff hole. Male announcer ] ours was the first modern airliner, revolutionary by every standard. And that became our passion. With jason day in the best position off the tee here. Big decisions going to be coming up from Harris English, who blew it far enough off the tee might have a chance to do something. Holmes in the bunker and stallings with the easiest right now nick decision. Jim yeah. Peter stallings has no chance of going for it from his lie. Hell have to lay up. Jason day has 235, just a little bit of a downhill lie so i would think perfect for his 5wood. David we have j. B. Holmes at 238 and not a great lie in the bunker but Harris English as you said 242 and i think he can get enough elevation. The lie is kind of matted but he might think about going at this try and carve something out of this. Nick as he got a 5wood in the bag . David he does. Nick thats going to be a max with that club. Jim looks like stallings is way out. He and John Yarbrough are just trying to figure out where to lay this up. Peter 229 total to the hole. Its a matter of what does he want for his third and how far can he advance this . Nick hell do well to move it 150 yards. Peter not possible. Jim swings off the right side of the fairway and that will be just fine. Nick that might be a good angle because youre then playing away from that 2 00 position. You can go right at the flag and hop it past. So good move. Peter jason day has pulled an iron here. Nick his 3iron. Thats his power club. Peter hell be the last to play i believe. Jim its going to be english trying to weigh a very important smith. He along with brian smith crunching numbers. David he would like somebody else to go in front of him. Hes going to lay it up. Nick i think thats wise. Is there a mound in front of him as well . David the mound doesnt really come into play, its low enough. The little stone pine that he would have to get it up or left of which he could do. Nick i think he simply cant get there with that 5wood. Simple as that. Doesnt want to risk it. David you do want to hit it on the fairway if you lay up. Oh no. Jim oh, my goodness, thats a disaster. Nick that is a big mistake. He made a mess at the sixth the fourth hole same way. Hit a bank, pulled it left, took a double, i think. Jim now j. B. David this one the sand is pretty soft and the weight of the ball is enough to again it could be ironic if he were to go for this one and not the last one. This is just a layup. Nick great extension through the ball. Jim now the most fascinating decision of all. Jason day last time said ill go ahead and hit it long and that almost cost him. Nick hes not going to belt it. Hes got to hit this 100 . Peter hes got a 2iron, no the a 3 and this is where his high ball flight is really an advantage. One of the marshals in the way. They have to signal him to move back to the side. Nick just a full, free swing and middle it. Peter and he went to the right side of the green nice and high. Nick oh, my goodness. He didnt get there. Wow. Im surprised at i dont think that was intentional peter, was it . No. Peter i theres no reason to lay it up over there i wouldnt think. Jim we said the breeze has been picking up in the last hour. Peter and it has picked up considerably but i think that was a slight mishit off the downhill mishit off the downhill lie. Nick i think hes fine because he can use the slope in the middle of the between to sort of bend it a bit. Jim the most concerning issue right now is Harris English is again, we keep talking about just off the fairway is the nastiest thickest lies you get out here. Well have to check the lie with peter and david but hes going to have to try to somehow sling one over the water. Oh. David actually, its half in and half out of the thick stuff which im not even sure helps. Nick well, its going to jam the hosel and swing the clubface left. But you can open it up a touch more. Jim better, though, than we first thought. Name way better. At least hes got a ha a chance. David yeah, hes got that slope to the right. Hes not going to be able to spin it but if he can run it up and around, he may be able to get it back close to the hole. It would take a heck of a shot. Peter in regulation stallings had 1307 yards left for his third shot. In the playoff he has 104. As i say the wind has picked up a bit but he should have a good feel for controlling the distance of this shot. Nick good feel and a great angle. If he pushes or pulls it, hes fine. Shouldnt miss that bowl. Peter that got caught up in the wind a little bit. Jim easy. Nick whoa. Steady eddy. Just went outside of the really nice range didnt it . Like a sixfooter. David j. B. , 95 yards and couldnt spin it the last time. Brian smith lastminute numbers. If he can throw it to the right of the flag and a little long, thats the steepest slope. Nick be careful. Thats the one that grips. Straight at it. Land it there let it hop past, come back. He went a little long last time and it gripped on the back ridge. David surely. Nick thats the one. Jim hes going to love this. Beautiful shot by j. B. Holmes. Nick makes this one a little easier because its just all or nothing. Try the impossible. David he cant land it halfway up the slope, it will go to the back. Hes got to land it just on the green. Nick yeah. David he hoisted it way up there. Went long. Jim back of the green. Nick the layup cost him. Completely. Unless, of course, theres the miracle putt. Why is he announcing when theres one more man to play . I wouldnt like that if it was me. Jim jason day is still peter he doesnt have a good angle, jim from here. Jim thats what i was concerned of. Peter hes trying to find the spot on the ridge where he needs to get the ball to funnel it toward the hole. Hell definitely have to carry it to the top tier try to get the speed right as it comes off that ridge. David there are a couple of very nervouslooking ducks in this pond since that last one of them looks paranoid. Jim the lucas glover shot. David it is not clear to him what is going on here. Nick youre right. Land it right on the crest of that ridge. Jim what a gorgeous shot. We have a four on the way for sure for jason day. With a win jason would move to seventh. Stallings would move into the top 10. So would Harris English. J. B. Would move him to 12th. You talk about all the things that are happening in the game of golf and the term changing of the guard is a little stale now because a lot of people could argue that thats been in progress here for several years with Rory Mcilroys four wins in three years but if youre looking for young stars, more to build on other than just rory mcilroy. This is a young fellow right here Harris English who has game but jason day would be on everybodys list. Nick hes been on my list for a couple of years now. Trying to follow in the footsteps of adam scott now. So a 1001 shot. Keep going then. Keep going, oh jim right on track. J. B. Stepped in at the end to watch the very last part of that because it went almost right over his mark, which hes going to put back to its original spot. Id just go ahead and why not . Five for english. The midway point on friday, coleader coming into saturdays round. Hell have a tie second finish here. Nick this is one that prugh had. Left edge firm. Jim he didnt take long. Nick a little too wide. Its only a fraction. Wow. Jim he was anxious to hit that one. David youre right jimmy. He got that out of the way quickly. Nick and then there were two. Its all on j. B. s shoulders now. Jim it is. Nick just to stay alive. Jim if he makes it and then once we clear the green here, theyll be heading to the 16th hole. Thats j. B. s wife ericka. Its not an easy putt. Made it look easy, though. Hold on to that. Says you see there, fellows i didnt need to go for any green. I can make four by leaning on my wedge. Jason day is also in with a birdie. So now to two. Theyre going to be escorted by mark russell over to the 16th hole. Heres what were going to do.
