He is not out of this thing. Those at four under even behind that. They will have a chance tomorrow at riviera. Retief goosen goes into the final round with a twoshot advantage. Jim theres lineup tonight on cbs. [captioning made possible by cbs sports division] Eyewitness News begins with our eye on a big saturday snowstorm. The snow has been falling all afternoon. It piled up very quickly and its going to keep piling up into the evening hours. Now, the snow quickly covered area roadways and highways. Plows and salt trucks are out in full force in many areas. This Eyewitness News cam video shows trucks on the ben franklin bridge coming into philadelphia. But there are still many roads out there that are pretty treacherous at this hour. And right now storm scan3 shows the heavy band of snow thats covering the Delaware Valley. Its going to be with us throughout the evening before ultimately changing to ice and then rain. Good evening everyone, im Natasha Brown. Thanks so much for joining us. Most of our area is under a winter storm warning right now. We have Team Coverage from all around the region showing you the impact of this storm. Were beginning tonight with meteorologist kathy orr shes live on the sky deck. Kathy. Natasha, it is raining snow here on the sky deck. You can see its accumulating on me already. I measured 3inches since it all began. We wont need the yard stick but you will need a ruler to measure this one because in many locations well end up with three to as much as 6inches of snow with some locally higher amounts. Lets take you back to storm scan3. I want to draw your attention to the south and east. You can see Cape May County where you see the pink and green, that is the mixing line moving toward the north. Its going to take some time to get into philadelphia. It will be the 9 oclock hour perhaps by the time we see a changeover in the city so more snow to come. You see those darker returns of lavender in baltimore and washington, one going through Cumberland County right now, that is a heavier band of snow that could snow at a rate of about a half inch to an inch an hour as those bands move through. A winter storm warning has been expanded along the i95 corridor to the south and to the east in new jersey and also New Castle County delaware. Were talking about 3 to 6 inches of snow. In the lower parts of south jersey and also through central delaware were talking about a Winter Weather advisory for a lighter accumulation. Heres a look at snow amounts right now. Camden reporting in over 4inches, drexel hill three moorestown new jersey three jenkintown three, houghs church reporting one. A lighter accumulation as you head towards the poconos. Theres not enough moisture up there because the storm is actually to our south. Look at visibility. In reading down to a half mile. In philadelphia less than a mile. In wilmington a mile. So you can see where the heavier bands of snow are right now. Temperatures are going to be critical with this. Were watching them slowly rise in wildwood still a the 30. Well see a changeover to rain in about an hour or so. We can see everywhere else we are stuck in the snow for at least the next three hours. Heres what to expect. That steady snow through this evening. If youre going out tonight, i was just on the roads, they are snow covered, they are slick and it will take twice as long as it typically does to get to where you have to go. An inch isnt heavier bands snow travel and remember it will be changing to rain but late. Now through 8 00 p. M. That snow heavy at times between eight and 10 oclock a changeover to freezing rain and rain making it through philadelphia. 10 00 and midnight mostly rain throughout the region. Were watching the future weather. This is the forecast that well see that rain line getting through philadelphia by late tonight and then towards the Lehigh Valley by about 1 00 a. M. But right now i think in allentown and reading we are going to stay mainly snow and sleet. Heres a look at your accumulations. 3 to 6 inches through most of the region. As you head further south toward atlantic county, southern parts of Cumberland County and even kent county, delaware, one to three and through wildwood along our shore points in south jersey a coating to an inch there. Now, that is the very late of the from the sky deck. My colleague Justin Drabick is out and about with the mobile weather lab. Were going to be talking to him. Hey, justin, we got you up on satellite. Good to see you. All right, kathy, thats right, were actually out on eakins oval in center city with the cbs3 mobile weather lab. Snowing pretty good but not quite as heavy as it was and then i do have our cbs3 weather watcher measuring stick here. Again this is the way you do it Old Fashioned old school way. Im taking different measurements around the region. Were approaching that 3inch mark here at eakins oval. Maybe 20 minutes ago it was two and a half. We had decent snowfall rates down here. If you just pan dune little bit towards the parkway its tough to see some of those buildings in the background so again low and visibilities so thats going to be an issue as far as driving goes and driving has been very slow all around center city this evening. Thats going to be the trend. Saw a couple plows finally come through the region. Well break it down here with the cbs3 mobile weather lab and bring our tv out here. Temperatures Still Holding steady at 26. 2 degrees but again we are forecasting that slow rise. Eventually well get that changeover from south to north. Wind 1 Miles Per Hour. Actually people are out walking around, see a few people sled down the art museum steps. Thats the late of the in the cbs3 mobile weather lab. Next time you see me well be driving and ill give you road conditions. Thats the latest here. Back to the studio. Snow is piling up quickly in cherry Camden County this evening as well. This is iwitness cam video from evesham road. You can see the snow was coming down pretty hard earlier this afternoon there. And the snow is creating slippery conditions on the roads. A car spun out on southbound 95 near the Commodore Barry bridge. The driver got some help pushing the vehicle back onto the highway. You do have to be very careful if youre going to be out and about tonight. Now, plowing and salting operations are in full swing all around the area but travel as you have seen in many areas, it is tricky. Our Team Coverage continues tonight with Eyewitness News reporter matt rivers live in warminster, bucks county. Matt. Reporter natasha, you just showed video of that car spun out on 95. Certainly not surprising to those of us who have to travel out this evening. Certainly the roadways not very good. We are in warminster as you said. Lets show you were right along street road here in warminster right merns road intersection. Cars are certainly start to spin a little bit when they go off the line there. Four wheel drive definitely the name of the game tonight. Natasha, youll remember over the last five weekends now weve done Winter Weather coverage on the weekend and the last couple weekends it has been is it a plowing operation for penndot or a salting operation. This weekend no doubt about it it is absolute al plowing operation as a penndot official told us here in warminster not long ago. Were in the heart of the storm. We have three to five hours where were going have the heaviest snowstorm. We have 400 trucks out right now. As you can see the main roads are little snow packed but we got material down. We had 400 trucks out since the middle of the morning putting down material and we had a lot of residue from the last storm. Reporter and speaking of those trucks we have some video now for you from Lower Gwynedd Montgomery County from a penndot salt yard. Eyewitness news was there as those penndot operators rolled out getting trod put salt down on area roadways and plow as much of the roads as they can. A penndot official told us a little bit earlier that what they also are concerned about moving into tonight is as you heard kathy say when those temperatures rise, this snow found in some sort of sleet or freezing rain, that creates ice and as penndot official said you cant plow isoits something theyre concerned about. Back here live in bucks county, were going to be here through the rest of the night. Were going to be talking to drivers, seeing how these roadways are. From the looks of it i would stay inside natasha probably better off for all involved. For now live in warminster bucks county, matt rivers cbs3 Eyewitness News. Really good advice, matt. Thank you so much. You guys take care out there. From the roads to the air and the rails we just talked to the folks at Philadelphia International airport. A ground stop is under way on all arrivals. Planes are leaving the airport but there are delays due to deicing. As for septa several routes are being detoured. Check septas web site, that is for a list. Dart has some route suspensions and detours as well and new Jersey Transit is also experiencing some detours. Now, when you arent near your television, head to cbsphilly. Com for the latest updates on the snowstorm and any community cancellations. Also, you can always connect with us on social media using the cbs3 snow. Also tonight residents they are forced to run out into the cold after fire breaks out at a Camden County apartment complex. We have details on the investigation. Thats straight ahead. Plus, theres some new video just into the news room of a serious snowrelated crash in Delaware County. We will have a report from that scene. Coming up were going to talk about when the changeover will occur in philadelphia and after this storm what the weather looks like in the seven day. Will we finally catch a break from the cold . Thats coming up as e yoplait. With a smooth and creamy taste your whole family loves. Dont miss yoplaits exciting new flavors creamy caramel and cookies n cream. Back now live on Eyewitness News, youre looking live at Center City Philadelphia from the cbs3 mobile weather lab. The roads are covered in snow as you can see there. Be very careful if you have to be out and about tonight. Meteorologist kathy orr and Justin Drabick will have the latest in just a couple of minutes. Now, the snow is piling up in Delaware County right now and theres been at least one serious crash there. Molly daily of our sister station kyw news radio filed this report from chadds ford moments ago. Reporter traveling south on route 1 in chadds ford and i just passed a scene in the northbound lanes that i drive back home. Theres a car thats wrapped around a utility pole up on an embankment a fair distance from the road surface. Now, as a result of that accident, route 1 north is closed. Thats at brinton bridge road. Ive been on the road for about an hour and so far i havent seen a snowplow. Reporting from chadds ford, molly daily, kyw news radio for cbs3 Eyewitness News. Well, now in other news tonight an Apartment Fire forced 22 adults and 14 kids into the cold in lindenwold Camden County today. Flames ripped through the Emerald Ridge apartments on gibbsboro road about 3 oclock this morning. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting from the rooftop of that building. They were able to quickly contain the blaze despite battling the extreme cold. Trying just do the best we can do with what we have at that time. Luckily the winds have died down so that was a contributing factor. Four units were damaged and there were no injuries luckily. The cause of this fire is still under investigation. We have our eye on the storm and right now storm scan3 is showing some of the heavy snow across the Delaware Valley with reduced visibility. I want to draw your attention here, you can see through Cumberland County where you see that lavender through baltimore and washtub see the darker colors, that is the heavier snow and when we see that, were looking at a snow rate of about a half inch to an inch an hour. Now, through baltimore and washington that heavy snow is right along the line between the snow and the sleet and the same thing is happening in dover so you may see a little burst of snow before you see that ice seem and of course a little bit further to the south you can see the rain building to build in. Its trying to move through the Delaware Valley. Right here through cape may a little bit of an ice seem and then that will be changing over to rain so everything starting in the south and the east as far as the mild air and it will be moving toward the north and west. And its going to be very difficult to scour out a lot of this cold air and thats why those snow accumulations have increased a couple of inches on both sides. Instead of two to 4inches for philadelphia youre more like three to six now. Our eyewitness weather watchers saying its yes its cold, its snowy and the roads are terrible. In philadelphia the temperature 24 degrees and joe is saying still snowing. Shovel or not with freezing rain predicted flyers tied at two. Its a good night to stay inside. Also want to show you a picture, some of the beautiful pictures that our eyewitness weather watchers are showing. In chesterfield new jersey snow falling in the backyard with many locations picking up about 3inches of snow already. Take a look at one place where were seeing some snow but not a lot of snow at jack frost big boulder. This is where they want it. There are very good skiing conditions and youll pick up about possibly 3inches of snow there because you are on the Northern Edge of this particular storm. We are going to be seeing more snow in philadelphia and our suburbs than up in the poconos. Visibility reduced in philadelphia and in trenton down. 8 of a mile. Even in reading about a half mile visibility with some of these heavier bands of snow. Northeast philadelphia. 8 for visibility. Temperatures will be critical as we slowly warm up. Thats when well see the changeover but at least the next id say three hours we will be in the snow. Even washington still a little bit of an ice seem at 30 degrees. Its 33 in richmond so its going to stay cold around here. Storm timing, steady snow between now and at least 8 00 p. M. By about 10 00 seeing that changeover and then rain late around that midnight hour pretty much everywhere. Now as far as the snow is concerned, we are looking it coming down at a pretty good clip at least for the next id say three hours justin. Justin drabick is live in Spring Garden driving on area roads. Justin, i was coming in, most of them were snow covered and you really couldnt travel faster than 10 or 20 miles an hour. Reporter yeah, thats right, kathy. You got to take it slow out here this evening. Best recommendations for traffic because its not good out here at all. We just turned offspring guard. Plow did go through there but it was all packed down. Rear wheel drive cars are sliding all over the place many people have their hazards on. Best bet just stay inside. We just turned down 17th street. Good solid 3inches of snow is on the ground and you can see pretty treacherous here. Were going like you said about 10, maybe 15 Miles Per Hour at best. Thats what you got to do here here in center city. We have seen a few plows around that come through from time to time. But again decent snowfall rate going on. Every now and then it gets up to about a half inch per hour as visibilities have been reduced. Its that powdery snow. Its pretty slick. Right now were holding a temperature right now of 27 degrees in the cbs3 weather lab so were just slowly climbing back up to that 30degree mark but you can just see these roads all snow covered throughout center city. So, just take it easy this evening. If you can stay inside, thats your best bet. And venture out tomorrow cause we are tracking a little bit of a warmup in our forecast and for those exact numbers lets send it back into the studio. Kathy. This will be a very welcome sight. Thanks justin. As far as snow accumulations 3 to 6 inches over a wide area, one to three as you head towards interior south jersey and the shore and a coating to an inch down the jersey shore. A as we look ahead were looking at conditions that are definitely going to improve. Theres a slight chance of a little ice with this. Other than that mainly snow changing over to rain. Overnight temperatures will be falling down into the 20s, highs tomorrow in the 40s. Some more melting going on. We do expect rain overnight and obviously the warming temperatures and then next week staying fairly cold, in the 20s and some 30s. Wow. All right, kathy thank you so much. Rob ellis is in with sports. All right natasha going if the snow to the ice. Flyers take on the predators at the wells fargo center. Phillies ace cole hamels met the media today. Just days after being quote as saying basically were in the going to win here and i may want out. Lesley van arsdale is with the team in spring training. Reporter chase utley was the latest veteran to arrive here to clearwater but today was all about cole hamels. At this given moment im a philly. Reporter over the off season cole hamels was quoted as saying he wants to win and he knows thats not going to happen here. He didnt confirm or deny that he made those comments but he seemed more optimistic now that the phillies can compete. I like my chances with the type of bullpen that we have. You know, still being able to have cliff, you know, a couple of the other starter that is we have been able to sign, theyre great guys and, you know anybody can surprise you at any given moment, you know, still having chase and howie here theyre big catalysts in any sort of lineup. If we can be consistent and you know, do the things the right way, you know, then we can surprise anybody. Reporter manager Ryne Sandberg would love to keep him here. Who won want cole hamels pitching opening day . But then again, theres the other side of the organizational sized it and the transition that were in right now so thats a whole another part of it. Reporter cole also said he would love for this team to prove people wrong but he is just one piece of the puzzle. Reporting in clearwater, lesley van arsdale, eyewitness sports. Cbs3 mobile weather lab well, it may not be a traditional snow day for the kids around the region but theyre still having a lot of fun today. These kids in turnersville Gloucester County are having a blast in their snow tubes. That looks fun. Yeah. Kathy has a last check on the forecast coming up next.
