Having a great time was a blast. And as you can tell tonight many people are saying the Solar Eclipse was well worth the wait. Good evening im jessica dean. Im Nicole Brewer in for ukee washington. Now how much people got to see depended on where they were. It was only several states that felt full impact of this eclipse and this is what they were treated to from oregon, to south caroline, the sun was blocked out along the path of totality, feeling midnight in the middle of the day. But much of the rest of the country was still able to see a sliver of the eclipse, here in our area people rushed outside to get a view of the highly anticipated event and we have team three coverage including chief astronomer derek pits in missouri but we will start with meteorologist Katie Fehlinger live in philadelphia at at the Franklin Institute, katie. You know, scientists are really hoping to use this eclipse to learn much more about the sun but here at Franklin Institute, guys, there were plenty of other lessons to go around, take a look. It is all inspiring to actually witness witt your own eyes. Reporter metaphorically speaking of course. Folks were well aware they needed to protect their vision some brought their own devices or they used tools provided by Franklin Institute like card game viewers. Cool to see. Or these, which offered safe viewing spaces. We showcase different method for safe viewing so people enjoyed the experience safely, without any harm to their eyes. As the eclipse happens you will see that light get covered up by the moon. Reporter of course, Franklin Institute used the eclipse to provide a fun, educational experience. Crazy cool because it looks like a crescent and i really want to be an astronaut as well. Really fun reporter unable to view the eclipse there was another 17 short years from now in 2024 and jessica and nicole the next one coming up in 2024 promises to put the Delaware Valley closer to the path of totality. So that would be something we will ekerly anticipate. Live from the Franklin Institute aim meteorologist Katie Fehlinger, cbs3 Eyewitness News. If were you center city around 2 30 this afternoon you saw people standing around, every where, looking upward, offices emptied many headed down to the street to get a glimpse of the eclipse, big crowd of workers, stood outside Municipal Services building. Pedestrians were also stopped in their tracks by the celestial event. I just turned 40 on the 13th and never seeing anything like that the day in my life. Reporter some of the best viewing was at the beach here in our region. Alycia nieves experienced eclipse fest with many others on the sand in ocean city. Sounds like i great spot, alycia. Reporter im not sure how i got tough gig of being at the beach during the Solar Eclipse, i cannot even say that with a straight face. It was awesome. Best part of being here was really a sense of comradery during the eclipse an effort for everybody who wanted to see the eclipse, look up at the sun they got the chance to do so. It was a day at the beach in ocean city, new jersey unlike any other in the last 99 years. We can sue moon on the right side just almost like a fingernail touch on it. Reporter rare Solar Eclipse visible with certified iso glass owes or viewers was in the sky for over two hours. My god, unbelievable. Reporter for those who didnt have eclipse glasses we shared ours. Oh, that is so much better. That is incredible. That is awesome. Im living. That is unbelievable. Reporter our spirit of sharing during this Rare National phenomenon was learned was a trend happening on the beach. Who need a pair. Reporter we saw life guard who brought 10 eclipse glasses and had people lined up for a day at the beach with the view they will never forget. Make sure everybody gets to see. Reporter while most of the day there was eclipse excitement there was eclipse concern. Life guard called everyone out of the water and had everyone gather around the life guard stand between 2 30 and quarter of three when it was the peak that everyone was going to have to go out of the water. Something was happening. Just left him not to stair directly at the sun because it can hurt your eyes obviously. Reporter and as i mentioned earlier there hasnt been an eclipse like this in a century so here in one really knew what to expect. You heard there a second ago was life guard taking precautions mentioning earlier they might to have evacuate water. If it got too dark or glare on the water. But none of that happened. There were no evacuations but awesome view during an amazing day at the beach. Reporting live from ocean city , new jersey, alycia nieves for cbs3 Eyewitness News. Group of viewers were doing more than just watching the eclipse today, they were collecting important data, as well. Eyewitness News Reporter greg argos is live in wayne at mccabe Nature Center and nasa gathering site and greg, that is a unique way to enjoy the eclipse. Reporter it was there, guys. A few hours ago this place was pack, 300 folks gathering here , of course, they wanted to watch the eclipse but they were gathering important information. Temperature, wind speed, things like that and all that data going directly to nasa. Yeah, that is so awesome. Reporter 1 30 monday afternoon the moon started its trip across the sun and for hundreds gathered here at the Nature Center in wayne, necks started to turn upward. Im exited to like see what happens. Moon starting to go and sunnies pretty cool so far. Reporter 300 people gathered, some packing shares, other imaging they are at the beach. Im wondering why we are not watching from the pool right now but you know, this was local, and support local. Reporter all excited about missing history, many for first time. I think it is really cool that i can see such scientific happenings in real life. Reporter others remembering the 1979 event. I remember in grade school doing something at our lady of Mount Carmel School in doyletown making a pin hole thing when i was younger. Reporter what makes it so unique is fact it is nasa a data gathering sight. We have petitioned nasa to be a observer site. Reporter he ace park ranger and made sure students gathered information about temperature, win speed and cloudiness. Record your observations. 220, 85 degrees. Reporter minutes later moment our region experienced the most coverage, the sun 76 percent blocked and all eyes looking up. And here at the center, most people pretty impressed. It was really cool. It is amazing. Im glad we came. I thought it would be darker but i guess it was okay just okay so most people really, to coin the experience here over pennsylvania few hours. All that data will be collected by volunteers here at Nature Center and compile aggregated and sent to nasa over next few days. We are live, from wayne im greg argos for cbs3 Eyewitness News. Come on next time do better , according to that little girl. Thanks, greg. Eclipse was an experience to remember for Franklin Institutes derek pits, he helpedded west to view the show. He joins us live from saint guess he have missouri a town on the path of totality. So derek, it is raining a few minutes before the total eclipse but you were still able to see it. We were still able to see it. Dramatic sighting here because we had cloud all morning and just before the eclipse began the deck got thicker and we were very worried we wouldnt get to see very much at all but in the final moments before the moon completely covered the disk of the sun the cloud thinned out enough to see last bit of the sun being covered by the moon. We got more cloud cover after that and then miraculously again, thinning of the cloud to see totality. We could see the corona, prominences around the edge of the disk of the sun, it was spectacular and the clouds just added another level of drama to it. As we say it is one of the most dramatic eclipse we have ever seen. You gave it a wonderful picture of what it was like but what impressed you most about this particular event. What im impressed with most is not length of the event because totality could be as much as seven minutes, and 30 seconds so this was a quarter of that but what impressed me was how many people were so excited to be part of this experience, so exited to want to get out and learn bit and really make the effort. So many people drove to the path of totality so they could experience this. That was what impressed me about this, let alone the view which again, even though it was looking like it would be cloudy, it was truly spectacular from here. Derek, before we let you go this was your fifth attempt at seeing a total eclipse, tell us what made this one stand out for you among those five. Well, what made this stand out was the appearance of the corona it was not as large as we expect it to be and i could see structure there and even though we had the thin cloud cover i could still see very good details around the edge of the disk of the sun but could even see diamond ring effect and it was really just, just beautiful and darkness around the region as we came into totality really impressed everyone. You could hear yell and screams of joy as the eclipse progressed rolling across the field. Great event. So special. Yes. Derek, thanks, we appreciate it. Thank you. Still to come on Eyewitness News other eclipse fest coverage still going strong. Check these out of planes seen next to the partially eclipsed sun where this was taken in our area, and more stunning eyewitness photos. Plus controversy continues , protesters once again gathered at frank rizzo statue the reason supporters cancelled a rally today. And heat advisory has been issued with just one dog day of sum inner store im meteorologist lauren casey and let you know when to expect highs in the 90s and zero sevens in your full forecast coming up, don. Eyewitness News Reporter joe holden is live at the statue with the future hanging in the balance, joe. Reporter good evening to you guys, the statue is, still surrounded by some members of the Philadelphia Police department, the barricades remain up here but it really appears at this moment Philadelphia Police have been in a somewhat of a stand down mode, the crew remaining here that was protesting is still out in the middle of jfk boulevard, members of the Philadelphia Police strike force and bike patrol pretty much making sure that they do not get hit by traffic, jfk boulevard is still opened but matt my photographer if you can swing around it is causing a jam up because members of the Philadelphia Fire Department are also responding to something, were working to find out what that is but all of this over an issue that has really torn some philadelphians apart. The frank rizzo statue, in place across from city hall eight years after the mayor died in 1991, some claim his legacy tarnished by intolerance. Rizzo raised hell in our neighborhood. I was young when he was the police commissioner. And then he became the mayor. Reporter last week a boiling point statue was vandalized his mural on south ninth street too was targeted by paint balls. Arrest where is made. For rizzos son former councilman frank rizzo, sharp divide over his fathers life work is painful. Tough time when you know the man that they are attacking, you know, my father was not a racist, matter of fact, he protected blacks, asians, whites, every race in the city of philadelphia. Reporter city leaders are calling for calm and civil debate over what to do with the statue. Todays protest featured those condemning rizzos legacy. For other side they stood down after mayor Office Confirmed that mayor jim kenney will meet with them but only if they cancelled their planned rally today. He was a great man protect all and i can tell you story after story after story about how he applied the law, equally. Reporter were back live here at what has become a very small protest chief inspector with the Philadelphia Police Department Tells me they are in absolute stand down mode because it appears that they have stood down as well. As far as the demonstrators, in support of the keeping the frank rizzo statue here they tell me they will be out here unclear yet but they will say that they will be fight to go keep this statue, where it is, city leaders pressing for civil conversation from this point forward.
