The pope also stressed the families need not only care for their children but also for the grandparents in the family. The holy father as remarks capped a vatican sponsored conference have of the world meeting of families. That is the the big event that drew him to first to philadelphia. Much like yesterday but again, good news is were not talking about rain just a few you sprinkles possibly. You can see temperatures in the lower 70s throughout the day for different meeting is here at correctional facility and papal mass, probably about 73 degrees but remember with that breeze this after afternoon so bun will up. 60 degrees currently in center city. You can see wind ten to 12 miles an hour. Is there our low pressure system staying to the south. I like that. It can hang out. We will take it on monday when we get all these visitors out of town. High of 75 in philadelphia meisha, i have to say it is so odd to look at the road Walking Around down in center city. It gives you this weird, erie but beautiful feeling. It is because we all necessity what this this is for so that makes that feeling feeltive rent. It is a very beautiful thing. Heres the view of the parkway crews are setting up the stage for the pope. He will give closing mass here for world meeting of families. Look at the this how beautiful it is. Road are all clear, closed down, nice you and this is what is taking place out there. That stage, of course, is being set right now for todays papal mass, perhaps the event of the weekend and last night that stage was looking very different, when it looks the focus of the festival of the families. Take a look, pope francis seemed amused as he watched famous performers take the mike and listened to stories of families from around the world. Each speaking of how their familys faith and strength brought them through permanent challenges. Then that voice, the the flawless voice of philadelphia 14 yearold bobby hill of the cities andorra section, no surprise, he is in the keystone state boys choir or that the pope like what he heard. The pope was serenaded by the queen herself Aretha Franklin whose rendition of Amazing Grace had him clapping and smiling. Andre bocelli and other talents wowed the crowds. Master of ceremonies actor Mark Wahlberg, more famous for his edgey rolls, wahlberg also toll the pope and audience he is also a believer in family and faith. I feel most blessed today being on stage today with the holy father and here with my fellow christians. I truly feel like today i can do anything. I attribute all of my success to my catholic faith. Reporter looking now over that stage, the the carpet appears to be going down. That mass starts at 4 00 oclock on the parkway to get a seat there you will need a very hot ticket here in philadelphia a a to have a seat to be close to the pope because we know there will be overflow along the the parkway, the city now bracing for upward of a million people, erika, back over to you. That is just so sweet. Crowd, coming from many different countries, different faiths but everyone here because of that mutual love of this great man the holy father. Now we spoke about, of course, party on the parkway before that though. Pope francis spoke to tens of thousands of people at independent hall and he really touched on hot button topics, everything from racism to immigration. Eyewitness News ReporterCharlotte Huffman joins us at independent mall with more on that speech, charlotte. Reporter it is really quiet now but it was such a different scene about 12 hours ago, when pope francis, at age 78, just completely reenergized this city and independent hall. Now it all started with the holy fathers parade around independent hall where traditional pope francis style we saw the peoples pope stop to kiss and bless children before finally a arriving here at the the historic independent hall a place that became a symbol of our country hundreds of years ago when the the declaration of independent and the constitution were a adopted and yesterday, another chapter in the history books as this American Landmark welcomed pope francis. Upon arriving he was presented with the 5foot cross, symbol of the Hispanic Community and it was fit ago this pope francis address the crowd of dignitaries and ticketed faithful in Spanish Speaking about immigration and using same lectern and ham lincoln used in the get is address. He had this message for immigrants. Do the not be discouraged by whatever challenges and hardships you face. I ask you not to for get, like those who came here before you, you bring many gifts to this nation. It was just amazing. It was something, no word i can say to explain how happy i feel. I got to sit right up front, so it was so incredible to see him in person. People seemed to soak up every word he had had to say, about 40,000 people filled this area behind me yesterday afternoon and there is no doubt they all left inspired. For now back to you. Such a powerful speaker, charlotte, thank you very much. We want to head back inside to our Nicole Brewer where we are live all morning long and all throughout the day but right new lets head back to the studio. Erika, thank you. Good morning. Pope francis as we said waking up at Saint CharlesBorromeo Seminary in wynnewood this morning to start another jammed pack day that is just how he rolled, one place to catch a glimpse of the pope was city avenue, people of all faiths gathering on both side up and down the street as pontiffs motorcade traveled to his home for the weekend. Many were moved just by his presence. Even though it is just a quick second that you have that encounter, it is enough. It restores your faith. It restores your faith in the country and people. That is a beautiful thing. Pontiff return home with the crowds still lining city avenue in the dark there all to get one last glimpse. In addition to the massive crowd, 150 seminarians cheered as holy father arrived in his fiat yesterday in wynnewood. They sang a song they are considered their anthem. All while posing with photos with the pope. Pope francis first stop after landing in philadelphia was cathedral basilica of st. Peter and paul. That is where the the pope celebrated mass with roughly 1600 faithful, during his homily the the pontiff invoked the name of the philadelphias saint Katherine Drexel asking what about you . There he challenge those to strengthen their churches and their community through the faith. This does not mean relinquishing the Spiritual Authority with which we have been entrusted but rather it means discerning and employing wisely the many fold gifts which the spirit pours out upon the church. Pope francis called on the church to place a higher value on life. Pope is known for his responsibility, and one of the first unscripted moments in philadelphia happened at the airport. Before leaving the the tarmac there the the pope got out of the car to bless ten yearold michael keithing who had cerebral palsy, up is an important moment of his trip. While mike ams family a says his disorder took his built to speak or move, they say he felt something very special at that moment. The fact that the pope, kissed him on the head and blessed him is something i would have never imagine possible for any of my children. He looked up to him and he just started smiling. To see this their emotion was the same as mine, and they took it for what it was, and just, they are going to remember this. Just a very emotion aal moment. Cant wait for this. So many people in town just for this very special occasion. Now last night, again, packed schedule for pope francis. Pope enchanted crowds on the parkway for the end of the world meeting of families, as you can see there, the the pope waves thousands of people lined up very early in the morning just to catch a glimpse of him and this is, of course, as the philadelphia orchestra played. You can see the stage is being converted into this beautiful alter. Our alexandria hoff joins us on the park which with more on how everyone is getting ready for this big event, good morning. Reporter good morning, erika. Transformation has taken place from last night to right now as most spiritual and physical. I just heard a man who, like so many others, waking up inside of the sleeping bag. He looked up and aid why is the the street wet that is a massive street clean up. Any debris left over from last night is completely gone. Main transformation that is taken place, erika as you mentioned a as the papal stage. Crews work overnight to set up what will be used as an alter during his 4 00 p. M. Mass. Heres it will be held to the public. Now this is the reason why so many people have made a pilgrimage to the parkway. They want to worship alongside the holy father. This is why so many have have been okay with sleeping out here on the parkway, in the cold overnight, for many of them, this is the second night, they have done that. So while all that energy from yesterday, i feel like it has taken it to the the point at a calm this morning. A peaceful calm but there is so many energy from the crowd last night. We had great performances. There was Andre Bocelli, a aretha frankly, they completely rocked this crowd. It ended with fire works last night. It is what every would be one is talking about. This morning, i did speak with the priest and he said despite all that happened last night there is a focal point here and that is that everyone came out here for a reason. Everyone had a reason that they wanted to see that one man and that one man was the holy father. I have two friend over here, they have made quite the journey and they are waking up from another journey, which is pretty much sleeping out here on cardboard. Guys, tell me what made it so important to come out here and to sleep on the parkway, did that add to your experience. Of course, definitely. We just needed to come. We needed to see religious leader. We had had to. It is one in a lifetime opportunity we had to take. Reporter was there anything in particular that he said, or any guess tour that he made that touched you yesterday, that made you feel like you wanted to be front row today. We were actually front row at independent hall, we were to get free tickets. Yesterday we were completely blessed for that opportunity and when he was talking about immigration and how we are all children of the lord and how we are just one people and that was amazing. So true. What you have done here is part of the pilgrimage, suffering through it in a way and that is something he has spoken to a lot. Thank you for being with us. We will be out here rest of the morning and for right now reporting live from the Ben Franklin Parkway im alexandria hoff for cbs3 Eyewitness News. So many incredible stories for this special event, thanks very much. If you are not sleeping outside on the parkway a a lot of folks will be taking septa to get here to the the 4 00 p. M. Mess. I want to check with kim that bucks county Cornwells Heights station with more on that, good morning. Reporter good morning, erika. It is slow but steady number of people arriving at Cornwells Heights train station by car or shuttle bus right now and the trains are leaving every half an hour. I spoke a little while ago with marry Louise Thomas of langhorne and she was with her Three Sisters and other friend and this is the second day being a taking septa down to papal activities on the park way. That will not fire. What she said was that yesterday they took septa and it was beautiful. They got on the train. Took them right in center city. They had a lovely day. They boarded after the concert and it was seem less. Perfectly seem less. In the trouble at all. Today they expect the same thing and they are going to be down there all day until after the mass and head back, again. Septa a says just about 700 people used the train station yesterday here, at Cornwells Heights and they expected double that today. Live from corn wells heights station for cbs3 im kim globes for cbs3 Eyewitness News. Expect even more today. Nicole, now back inside to you. Erika, thanks very much. Reporter cheers could be heard for blocks outside the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul as pope francis waved and stepped inside inside as the the organ played and choir sang, the the crowd lifted dozens of smart phones to capture this powerful moment, when philadelphia catholic history. In his homely the holy father invoked philadelphias Katherine Drexel, turn of the century heiress who had a faithful meeting with pope leo the 13th about the poor. Those words changed catherines life because they reminded her that in the end every christian man and woman by virtue of baptist many has received a mission. Pope francis called on the church to do the same and hardness the the energy of the young. How many young people in our parishes, and schools, have the the same high ideals, generosity of spirit and love for christ and the church. I ask you do we challenge them. Reporter he also made special mention of women. In a particular way, it means valuing the immense contributions which women, lay and religious, have made and continue to make. As the pontiff finished, his homily the sanctuary rang with applause as gift from philadelphia a, back to the holy father. While the security lines, some are getting a little bit long but people seem to be in good spirits bit. Many of these folks having to wait in line for a little bit of time here to get through some Airport Security type of checkpoints and metal detectors as well. Fortunately looking down, folks wore comfortable shoes as they knew it might take a while. For many smooth sailing and lines werent too long. We dont mind waiting, if there is a higher purpose and when you have that higher purpose you dont mind waiting, hours and hours. Not bad at all. Great way to say that. If you are heading out to the parkway today the earlier you head out, im telling you, the shorter the security line will be. Pack the the patients. Keep a smile on your face, bring some water, you will get through it and find a spot, i promise. Great opportunity, it is a mile and a half to get on the other side of the bridge, give them something to read, they can learn what they say the pope. Reporter for this woman it is a walk of confirming things. My family tells me, i will meet jesus. Reporter others wondering if the spiritual experience awaits. That is what were here to find out.
