Will be taking closer look at how major sea ice lost affecting the climate and john. Doctor walt meyer joins us tell us bore this. Ard space good morning, doctor, thanks for joining us. Good morning, thanks for having me. We understanded the arctic losing sea ice faster rate than recent years. Have you figure out why these changes are happening . Well, the reason why the arctic is losing ice in short it is getting warmer, and it is particularly getting warmer up in the arctic, and thats part of a feedback system, where we are seeing losing the ice causing more of the suns energy to be absorbed during summer having effect on the arctic climate, look to go what were studding this summer, and also, outside of the arctic, as well. What is nasa doing to understand the sea ice changes . Well, nasa, been looking at sea ice for well over 35 years. And now we are we have a new mission this summer called the rise, and thats going to send an aircraft up over the arctic ocean here at the peak of the summertime. And were going to be flying through the clouds, and over the ice, and really look to go at this and better understanded the interaction between the atmosphere and the clouds above the ice and the ice cover. It will help us better understanded the processes causing the loss of the ice, and looking toward the future of whats going to happen down the road. Now, are these changes just right now in the arctic or could it affect other climates like ours in the u. S. If so, how much . Well, the arctic is not like las vegas. What happens in the arctic doesnt stay in the arctic. Weve seen store business this, even as recently as last winter pot area vortex, due to the jet stream, in dips, and waves in the jet stream, when you get these cold air from the arctic, and that, we think, is caused in part by the loss of the sea ice. So what happens up with the sea ice, the arctic, actually does affect the weather in philadelphia, and throughout the United States potentially. Wow. You know, when it does come to the arctic losing the ice like this, what are we seeing in the longterm trends . Well there is year, actually, we have gotten bit after respit.
