As many people are counting on Social Security but there are a lot of questions about the Financial Health of this system. Cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger has the store friday new york. She has answers about the problem and program that still confuses lot of people. Jill, what are the most popular common questions. I got dive bombed with emails after our segment on tuesday. People still dont understand what it takes to qualify for Social Security retirement benefits. So let me remind you, you have to have work at least ten years, okay, buthhe you can draw benefits it varies and that depend on when were you born. Were 1938 your full retirement age is 6 rises incrementally. Born after 1960 the age is 67. The other big question that i have been receiving is about whether people should take their benefits early. Now assuming you got those ten years in the system you can claim benefits as early as age 62 but remember, big caveat there the benefit is permanently lowered for the rest of your life. For some folks as much as 25 percent less and that could also affect a nonworking spouse who is planning on claiming half of your benefit. On the other hand if you delay your retirement until have after your full retirement age you get like a little bonus, another 8 percent a year until you reach age 70 when you c out. Wow. I know you got bombarded with questions, is what the other big question youve. Reporter most frequently asked question was when should i file. You want to know the answer. It depend circumstances. The general rule is that when you delay Social Security it makes Financial Sense if you live long enough. So, i hate to say this but you tell me when you die i can tell you when to collect Social Security. If you live beyond 78 itoii makes sense to forgo between the ages of 62 to 66. If you live beyond 82 and a half, maybe you have nice longevity in your family it certainly makes sense to delay until you are age 70. But, conversely if you are in poor health or you really just need income today probably claim at 62. For more answers to your Social Security questions, you can go to jill on ask jillmone take care.
