New dna evidence convinced a jury to find him not guilty in august, days later, he cut the first birthday cake, ever to bear his that i am. It was a long, tough road, but through it all i have been so blessed. Reporter wrights attorneys recently filed this this civil rights lawsuit against city of philadelphia and 11 Police Officers involved in his investigation. They claimed false evidence, coerced confession led to wrights Wrongful Conviction and they want compensation. I think we have the best system in the world. But, it is not a persist tell. Reporter Gordon Cooney is one of the lawyers who exonerated John Thompson a louisiana man who spent 14 years on death row. They proved prosecutors withheld evidence and won 14 milliondollar for their client, but the u. S. Supreme court overturned the decision, making it difficult to get compensation. Federal law now presents very few opportunities for compensation, for somebody who has been wrongfully convicted and it is really then up to the state legislator. I am an advocate for those guys that dont have a voice. I got one, just have a voice. Reporter wright went to harrisburg with other people, and they want pennsylvania to become the 38th state, that supports those, the system failed to protect. On the cbs3 healthwatch, actor is crediting the test, that diagnosed that cancer with saving his life and he says more men should get a test earlier. Health reporter Stephanie Stahl is here with more on stiller and his controversial test. A lot of people talking about this. Psa is a blood test that can detect Prostate Cancer but many experts say it can do more harm then good sometimes leading to unnecessary treatment of cancer, that isnt always deadly. This is pretty complicated, and confusing situation. Now as actor ben stiller he was screened ahead of schedule. Fortyeight yearold ben stiller is now cancer free and credits a psa drug test, stiller on Howard Sterns radio showed said he wanted to tell his story to raise awareness and encourage other men to be tested. At first i didnt know what was going to happen. I was scared. I was scared. You know, one thing it does is it just stops everything in your life. Reporter stiller says his doctor decided to include a psa test in an annual physical exam when he was 46, even though he wasnt considered high risk. It is unclear, why that was done, four years early. American Cancer Society recommend psa test starting at age 50. I think that he was very brave to come out with it. Reporter doctor allen wein chief of neurology at the penn medicine said while is there debate about screenings for Prostate Cancer ben stiller is helping raise awareness that men need to have conversation was their doctors. It is shared decision making. Im a great believer in that if you tell asians what the facts are, then they should be able to choose whether they want something or not. Reporter stiller had his prostate removed with less invasive robot assisted operation and was able to avoid radiation which can cause side effects like incontinence and impotence. Had he waited until age 55, to be screened, i think ben unfortunately the outcome may have been different. Reporter now biggest risk factors for developing Prostate Cancer include age, being africanamerican and having a family history.
