Reporter rahel, jim, good afternoon, there are so many questions surrounding this incident. New Jersey State Police are actively investigating our assignment desk just spoke with them few moments ago, and they are still trying to find out and piece together how all of this did come together. Now, here is what we know. Take a look at the smashed out win shield of the black suv on the streets. Trooper say the driver lost control new jersey turnpike, came to rest crashing into those wooded areas there, after police say a dumbbell smashed right through the win shield. Were told the driver, 757 year old man, was hit by the dumbbell, 50 pounds in weight, and was seriously hurt. A female passenger was in the suv at the time and was not injured. The incident happened in old man township salem county around mile marker 6. 6 in this turnpike southbound lanes. Special questions for investigators of course, is where did this weight come from . Troopers arent shedding much light on possible answers but from chopper three, we can make out an overpass that crosses the turnpike, this suv would have just passed under that bridge, and then we see on the roadway, where it did lead to the turnpike. Now again, no officials comment from investigators as to where this crash investigation does stand though that 75 year old man who was hurt in the drivers seat of the suv right now is being treated at crozerchester Medical Center behind me, of course stay with cbs3 Eyewitness News, for the latest on this developing story. Our anita oh, live where residents are without power, in some cases without cars. Good afternoon. Reporter good afternoon, rahel. Thats right, this is more like a massive crater. Take a look at the damage here. There is not much left of this street. This is a massive sinkhole, that started with a 6inch water main break, they put up barricades, to make sure the neighbors here are protected as they walk along the sidewalk here, what they are doing, capping off the sides of the water main that are still salvageable, where the water main that broke is out of the grounds now. Theyll have to inspect the sewer expected to happen tomorrow, but, workers here, who have been at it all day yesterday, and continue today, say there is still a long road ahead. The street ate my car. Those are not words melissa banks ever thought she would say, around 9 00 sunday morning thats exactly what happened when sinkhole swallowed up her car and one other. I heard something that sounded like a bucket of a back hoe hitting the ground. I looked out front and my car was completely in a hole. It started with a 6inch water main break on the 2300 block of east boston street in fishtown, which then gave way to this massive sinkhole. As walking down the street, that little kia, no long area kia, just fell right into the street. Opened the door, heard a lot of commotion, then looked down the street, my car was halfway in the sinkhole. After hours of work, crews were able to pull the two cars out. But whats left behind is more like a crater. The total lost, possibly 40 feet by 50 feet, gone under the street. Philadelphia Water Department spokesman, john did i jewel yo, says because this block is structurally undermined, long road ahead to fix it. It will not be an easy process. Even though losing his car is not the best outcome, hena daniels is staying positive. Kind of disbelief. At least it wasnt our house. At least somebody got hurt, you know, just a car. A lot of neighbors here staying positive again, taking live look at the damage here, more like a crater, thanks to this water main break, and a sinkhole. I also want to mention that fire that you see keeping workers here warm who have been here for more than 12 hours yesterday, and will continue throughout the day today, we do know that this entire block still does not have power or water. Theyre hoping to get the water back on for just a few customers, when they tap off the sides of the water main that are still salvageable. You do have more sunshine than anything, at the moment, over head. We sort of seen intermittent clouds, sunshine, it will be here the rays of the day. Cold overriding headline on this day, eventually are going to as you mention see nice warming trends. And it is a nice one. Lets start things off though with very quick check, just where we came from, it was a really frigid start folks. It is the coldest temperature we reported since valentine day, interestingly enough of this year. But 12 was where we bottomed out this morning, happened around 5 00 this morning, 20 the best we can muster up right now. And we are expecting to eventually hit maybe 28 degrees or so. But, you know, with that low sun angle, again some clouds, here and, there high up in the atmosphere it, will limit the warm that can take place certainly. With just this kind of cold thats in place, you will not get too much more movement on the thermometer. Sun, clouds, expectation everywhere for the rest of the day. Stays dry. Dont have to worry about any additional precipitation. Thats Something Else that will change with time.
