In fact the heat is getting turned up this afternoon. Lets get a first look at the forecast with meteorologist Katie Fehlinger life on the cbs3 sky deck. Is it hot out there, katie . Were in nice airconditioning right now. You know this is the first day, guys, ive actually had to step inside in between hits here because being out here for too long is just too unbearable. Its brutal outside. Ill be honest. Lets go ahead right to the maps and well show you just how excessive it is. Everybody is in the midst of some type of heat alert. Youve got excessive heat warning where im standing here in philadelphia and basically i95 and all the counties that flank it. Heat advisory though posted for everybody else here in the Delaware Valley. Its a toasty afternoon. Take look at these current feels like values. Yeah, thats brutal stuff. In dover it feels like 107 already. And here in philadelphia it already feels like were flir flirting with 100 technically we expect to actually hit 97 right now we are just shy of 90 degrees in philadelphia. But thats going continue to change as we heat up through the afternoon. Youve got some sunshine but notice youve got the thunderstorms also on the way. Theyll be scattered in nature, but they will be coming through with bang. We think we can see pretty nasty ones later on today. You can see the tail end of what moved through early this morning. Now out to sea on current storm scan3 loop things are awfully quite but eventually well start to see that activity popping up here on the radar. So as we continue to talk about the fact that were tracking storms were still talking about record highs and also the heat wave set to continue. So while this is the worst day of our heat wave, it does appear as though we continue to string of 90 plus degrees even the days ahead ill tell you just how long its actually going last a little later in the show. Guys, ill send it back in to you. Thanks, katie. Coming up on cbs3 Eyewitness News as expected the dnc is impacting roads in town. Be careful where you park. Warning from the Philadelphia Parking Authority is coming up next. Despite plenty of warning about restrictions on i95, it was a mess this morning. Meisha johnson is next with a traffic whenthe state made aers, commitment to us. I knew that i wasnt going to make a fortune. But i would have a secure pension plan when i retired. Each and every one of us made that contribution from every paycheck we ever earned. Theyve been negligent in their responsibility over the years of not funding this pension the way it should have been funded. They have made a promise, theyve made a commitment, and they need to stick to it. Well on this first day of dnc a reminder for drivers in south philadelphia. The ppa says it will tow cars parked in the median on South Broad Street while the convention is in town. Cars towed by the ppa will go to the swanson street lot and owners, well, theyll have to pay 51 fine. This is not only the first day of the dnc its the first day of traffic restrictions throughout the area. This is what the morning rush hour looked like on i95 north near Prospect Park in delaware county. Now, theres a ban on vehicles 5 tons or more on 95 near the Wells Fargo Center and that created quite a backup as lanes were reduced. Meisha johnson is live in our Traffic Center with more on the restrictions and how traffic is flowing now. Meisha. Yeah, good afternoon. Traffic is looking actually okay right now. I would like to tell you its just going to hit our morning commuters but thats not the case dnc in town. It had hit you in the evening as well right now looking outside, what youre looking at dnc closures and checkpoints are kind of scattered throughout 95 north at the platt bridge. This where we have one of those checkpoints right now. Additional checkpoints 95 southbound the offramp to the 59. Youre also going to be seeing them 59 eastbound off ramp to 95. 95 both directions remember between 59 and the platt bridge no vehicles over 5 tons are going to be loud. Hence all these checkpoints youll be running 92. Also you guys 95 ramps to broad street are closed. Southbound is open only to you traveling to the navy yard, but they will will be completely closed from 2 00 p. M. Until 2 00 a. M. Daily as well this week. So make note of that. Well will have that on cbsphilly. Com as well as ill be tweeting out at the wall. 95 between the platt bridge and vine street expressway no commercial vehicles over 5 tons. Broad street between washington and packer no parking in the center median. Also several septa bus routes are going to be detoured. Make note of this. Make sure to check your schedules online. Youre certainly going to want to do and also, taking a look at the wide view call your attention to this. A side from all of the restrictions that well see the checkpoints that were going to see and the alternate tee detours well be experiencing the wide right now is showing all gray. All Speed Sensors where they are, but for those of you commuting in the eastbound sides, and moving into the evening commute it will get slow around the convention time. I would starting at 3 00 p. M. Or so. Back over to you. Thanks so much, meisha for that information. Still ahead on eyewitness new news wildfires have people on the run. Well take you to the fire fight out west. Katie . And brooke back here at home it certainly is very very steamy outside and that is going to help provide some of the the stability we need for nasty fire storms to fire up yet again later today. Well track them for you have your full forecast on the other side. Donald trump i could stand in the middle of 5th avenue im Hillary Clinton and i approve this message. And shoot somebody and i wouldnt lose any voters, okay . And you can tell them to go f themselves you know, you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever. You gotta see this guy. Ahh, i dont know what i said, ahh. I dont remember. Hes going like i dont remember major wildfires in california are forcing thousands of people out of their homes. The flames have already destroyed 18 buildings while hundreds morey main in danger. Cbs news correspondent maria has more on the fastmoving fires. Reporter destructive fastmoving flames have gained new ground two days after exploding north of los angeles. Strong wind gusts and nearly triple digit temperatures propel the flames through canyons from years of drought. That fire came through like a freight train. Reporter as the fire surged toward a string of small communities late sunday firefighters on the ground set up to protect peoples homes. This is a fifth year of o ongoing drought. So we have very extreme fire behavior. These are not normal times. Reporter investigators discovered a mans body in this burned out car. Unfortunately, we lost one life. We feel that is preventible. Law enforcement say evacuate, that means evacuate. Reporter but cliff says he stayed to protect his home. I have no been in anything this close before. Reporter why did you stay, cliff . Well, you know, you work so hard on a piece of property. Reporter at least 1500 homes in this area are still under a mandatory evacuation perfect example of why this is important two to 3 miles from here there is a product Production Company sable production. The owners of that business tried to put the fire out with their own water hoses but they were quickly over taken by the fire and that fire basically ripped through them in a matter of seconds. Thankfully no one was hurt but it shows you how sporadic and how dangerous this fire can be. Cbs santa clarita, california. Katie, this morning when i was driving to work at 2 30 in the morning it was 84 degrees. I thought my car thing was broken. Yeah. It was so warm this morning. Then we had the really heavy thunderstorms come through. They helped cool things down briefly but were heating right back up right now. We do have very good shot to break a record here in philadelphia. So thats where wee turn our focus first and for most talking temperatures and also talking potential for additional showers and locally stronger if not severe thunderstorms. Lets get to it. We got a lot to cover. The records to beat today are as such. In Atlantic City got to hit 99 degrees. In philadelphia the record is 96. We are shooting for 97 as we showed you earlier in the broadcast. So we think well have new one fort books here today. In reading 96. 95 the number to beat in allentown theyve got a good shot to break it as well. Heres where we curren currentld flirting with 90 here in philadelphia. But tack another 9 degrees on to this thats where well end up later on today and it does feel about 10 degrees plus hotter than this right now. So thats the gauge i want to you use. As you go out the door. As i mentioned earlier i had to step inside from the sky deck after couple of minutes it really is brutal out there. So please take care the next couple of hours will be very very hot. Wear light loose fitting clothing if you can. If you have to be in the sun cite stay out of the direct sunlight. Keep your kids, keep your pets cool and of course never let anyone in the car for an extended period of time. Storm scan3 quiet for now. Heres the front that has crossed through. Thats going to get these additional showers and thunderstorms firing up and most of our region now sits in the slight for additional severe thunderstorms for downpours gusty winds small sized hail as pete mayor concerns mainly later this afternoon. So we judge nap future weather by 3 00 p. M. Things are bubbling up on the outskirts of Delaware Valley and start to rumble on in here in time for the evening rush. Than ideal timing the further north you travel. It looks as though some of the storms could really wreak havoc torrential downpours for the late evening especially over philadelphia. So nine, 10 00 oclock this evening we could really be in for some very very heavy rain and frequent lightning like we saw early this morning. All out of here her by tomorrow at least well see the worst humidity get wiped clean. Outside Kutztown Area Middle School few clouds but generally speaking a bright Sunny Afternoon that will change for some spots as that next round of thunderstorms fires up here. So its a toasty day. The high hits 97. Tack on handful of degrees for how it will feel. It isnt as humid tomorrow but a scorcher at 95 degrees. We keep some sun in the forecast wednesday, thursday and friday as do we keep those low to mid 90s. And we may even see a shower or thunder storm any of those days as well. So its definitely an active time here in the weather departme welcome back. Reminder before we go to join us tonight at 7 00 oclock for special coverage of the dnc. Well broadcast live from inside the Wells Fargo Center as the National Spotlight shines on our city. Tonight at 7 00 here on cbs3. So hot. That really sums it up. So steamy outside and again more showers, more thunderstorms later on today. The ones that came through this morning woke you up very likely wake you up again later on today. Maybe youre taking a afternoon snooze. But at least the worst humidity dies down by tomorrow. It will still be hot. You can see how the worst of the dew points start to drop off heading into the next couple of days. Its still humid but today really is the worst much another quick check on the seven day for you. 90s continue much its a theme right through the end of the week. Thanks, katie that is whenthe state made aers, commitment to us. I knew that i wasnt going to make a fortune. But i would have a secure pension plan when i retired.
