Don . Reporter good afternoon, usually bustling streets of the Downtown Dallas have been replaced with crime scene tape and grief, this mid take, behind me is one of the many scenes investigators are combing over in the shooting that the police chief here called an atrocity. At least one gunman, ambushed, Police Officers just after a peaceful protest was ending in Downtown Dallas. The attack sent the crowd running for their lives. I was screaming, run, run, run active shooter, active shooter. Reporter twelve officers were hurt, fellow officers rush to their sides. Get back, get back. Reporter five of the officers died. Were hurting. Our profession is hurting. Reporter two civilians were also injured, police cornered the suspect identified as Micah Johnson and then negotiated with him for hours. Johnson told police he was acting alone. He was upset about black lives matter, suspect stated that he wanted to kill white people especially white officers. Reporter negotiations broke down with johnson and police got into a gunfight. Officers then used a bomb attached to a robot to kill him. Police have three other people in custody. Much of the downtown area is a crime scene, a ten block area will remain closed to day as police investigate. In poland overnight president obama called the shootings despicable. There is no possible justification for these kinds of attacks or any violence against Law Enforcement. Reporter protest was one of of several held a cross the country last night in the wake of the two officers involved shootings of black men in louisiana and minnesota, videos of the both shootings went viral. The police ambushed in dallas is deadliest day in Law Enforcement history since the 9 11 attacks. This must stop. The divisiveness, between our police and our citizens. Reporter the citys police chief is asking for the nations support. This community is already coming together, in the wake of this horrible tragedy, in about an hour people will be gathering at a park not too far away from here, for an inter faith prayer service, as the police chief here put it this morning, we have to start healing wounds, and not creating them. In dallas, im don champion to you back to you. Thanks, don for that report. We are learning how philadelphia authorities are responding to the violence in dallas. Is there a black lives matter march in philadelphia this evening. Greg argos is live at city hall with the plans for the Police Department, greg . Reporter jim, exactly right that black lives matters protest is expected to begin around 5 00 oclock this afternoon. The it will end right here at city hall. This afternoon or this morning i should say we did speak with commissioner richard ross about what the Police Department will be doing in addition to the normal routines for a protest, especially in light of what happened last night in dallas. Obviously it prompts us to take measures that even we werent taking before relative to a protest. Obviously in large scale events, some of the things im alluding to that we are not talking about are things we would have done but not necessarily in protest. So that is a sad commentary but we will do what we have to do to keep protesters safe and we will support to keep everybody in this city safe. Reporter on top of the extra Police Presence we are expecting for the protest commissioner ross tells cbs3 officers will patrol the streets in pairs, at least for the next few days. This is after the deadliest attack on Law Enforcement since 9 11. Officials in dallas say four people were shot by a snipper including 12 Law Enforcement officers and two civilians. Five officers died. It all began as a peaceful black lives matters protest in Downtown Dallas. Hundreds gathering like they will tonight, here in philadelphia to protest the killing of two black men in as many days by officers in both louisiana and minnesota. This morning the pennsylvania legislative black caucus held a previously planned meeting to talk about the violence and touched on what happened last night in dallas. Lets take a listen. All of these shootings over the last couple of days, we do not conn down violence in this manner when it comes down to the people of color and also when it comes down to Law Enforcement officers. Reporter once again tonights protest here in this is a cbs news special report, im jeff glor. Were about to hear from Loretta Lynch speaking about a sniper shooting in dallas that killed five Police Officers. The suspect identified by sources as 25yearold micah x. Johnson held police at bay for hours overnight until a bomb squad explosive killed him. Jen crawford is in washington waiting for the speech from the attorney general. Jen . This is a crucial moment for lynch, her leadership as she seeks to bridge the divide between Law Enforcement and the Africanamerican Community. Lynch came into her job with significant support from Law Enforcement, a former federal prosecutor in new york, gotten high marks for her efforts to reach out and develop a Good Relationship with Police Including those rankandfile officers, in contrast to her predecessor eric holder, a former prosecutor who developed strained relations with Law Enforcement after several Police Shootings of unarmed african men like in missouri. Lynch has been vigorously supporting civil rights laws and supporting Law Enforcement. Shes done a series of Community Policing tours, launched that last year, in which she was emphasizing the direction of the president , building trust, Community Policing, training, education, officer safety and wellness. This a crucial test for lynch as she tries to support Law Enforcement and build the bridge with minorities and the Africanamerican Community as the nations top Law Enforcement officer and move this country forward, jeff. Jan, as we wait for the attorney general to speak, this started at 8 45 p. M. Local time last night in dallas at the end of this what was a peaceful protest up until then. 12 officers were shot, five died, two civilians were also wounded by the gunfire. The investigation has continued on that scene in dallas all morning long. The suspect, before he was killed, said that he had left i. E. D. S in other parts of the city. At this point, Dallas Police have not found any of those and, in fact, have cleared the scene, but it does remain an active crime scene based on everything that happened last night. Chief d. V. D david brown in dalld what was an extraordinary and candy press conference earlier after the mayor spoke, and he said that, on behalf of Law Enforcement and Dallas Police, he said, we dont feel much support right now. We need your support. He said, our profession is hurting. Weve also learned this morning that most of the officers who were injured in last nights shooting have been actually released from the hospital. It is unclear at this point how many officers exactly remain in the hospital and what those injuries are, but well certainly bring all of that information to you as soon as we have it. If youre still with us, you mentioned eric holder who oversaw the Justice Department when some of these controversial shootings happened and then there was the handoff. Can you talk a little bit more why the handoff took place and why the president felt it was important. Eric holder when he came in had Law Enforcement experience, his brother a retired police officer, but ferguson, missouri, was a real turning point. I think Law Enforcement interpreted some of his comments before the investigation was completed as something much less than a lack of support for Law Enforcement and, so, when lynch came in, again very high marks from Law Enforcement because of her work as a federal ross cured in brooklyn, there was enormous hope that she would be more understanding and seek to bridge that divide with Law Enforcement. For example, after the rioting in baltimore, maryland, she met with rankandfile officers, something that holder did not do after ferguson, missouri, and specifically said in those conversations with the rankandfile officers that policing was a noble profession, and those kind of statements, making her seem more apolitical, i think, than eric holder had become perceived went a long way with Law Enforcement, but thats not to say that she has not vigorously sought to enforce the civil rights laws when there have been shootings as weve seen Justice Department moving in swiftly in the wake to have the shooting in louisiana this week. So i think she has really, i think, as were talking about this and trying to contrast her with the end of eric holders oversight of the Justice Department, she has tried to strike that balance. But jeff, as you know and all our viewers know, this test, this moment is something that is unimaginable, i think. Its, like, the Worst Nightmare for the nations top Law Enforcement officer, that Police Officers are now feeling under siege and targeted, and the Africanamerican Community wounded and hurting and suffering and also feeling they are being targeted. This is the test for lynch now as the nations top Law Enforcement officer, and here she comes. Lets listen to the attorney general as she starts to bridge this divide and talk about the case, jeff. Good afternoon, everyone. Thank you all for being here today. Last night at least five Police Officers were shot and killed, several more were injured, along with two civilians, as they sought to protect a peaceful protest in dallas, texas. Our thoughts and our prayers and condolences go out to the families of those who have lost loved ones. The department of justice, including the f. B. I. , a. T. F. , the u. S. Marshal service and u. S. Attorneys office on the scene is working closely with state and local counterparts and we intend to provide any assistance we can to investigate this attack and also to help heal a community that has been severely shaken and deeply scarred by an unfathomable tragedy. This is an unfolding situation. Well be providing Additional Information when it is available and appropriate. But more so, this has been a week of profound grief and heartbreaking loss. The peaceful protest planned in dallas last night was organized in response to the tragic death of alton sterling in louisiana and Philando Castile in minnesota and weve opened a civil rights investigation in louisiana and providing assistance to local authorities in minnesota who are leading the investigation there, and today we are feeling the devastating loss of dallas area Rapid Transit officer Brent Thompson and four other fallen officers whose names remain unreleased as we await notification to all of the families. Now, after the events of this week, americans across our country are feeling a sense of helplessness, of uncertainty and of fear, and these feelings are understandable, and they are justified, but the answer must not be violent, the answer is never violence. Rather, the answer, our answer, all our answer must be action calm, peaceful, collaborative and determined action. We must continue working to build trust between communities and Law Enforcement. We must continue working to guarantee every person in this country equal justice under the law, and we must take a hard look at the ease with which wrong doers can gee their hands on Deadly Weapons and the frequency with which they use them, and we must reflect on the kind of country that we want to build and the kind of society that we are choosing to pass on to our children. And above all, we must reject the easy impulses of bitterness and rancor and embrace the difficult work but the important work, the vital work of finding a path forward together. And above everything, we must remind ourselves that were all americans and that, as persons, we share not just a common land but a common life, not just common goals but a common heart and soul, and those who were lost this week have come from different backgrounds and neighborhoods but today theyre mourned by officers, residents, family and friends, by men and women and children who loved them, who needed them and who will miss them always. They are mourned by all of us. To the families of all who have lost their lives in this series of tragedies, we share your pain and your loss. To our brothers and sisters who wear the badge, i want you to know that i am deeply grateful that a difficult and dangerous work that you do every day to keep our streets safe and our nation secure, our hearts are broken by this loss, and the department of justice will do all that we can to support you in the days ahead, and to those who seek to improve our country through peaceful protest and protected speech, i want you to know that your voice is important. Do not be discouraged by those who would use your lawful actions as a cover for their heinous violence. We will continue to safeguard your Constitutional Rights and to work with you in the Difficult Mission of building a better nation and a brighter future. And to all americans, i ask you, i immore you i implore you, do not let this week precipitate a new normal in this country. I ask you to turn to each other not against each other as we move forward. Let us support one another, let us help heal one another. I urge you to remember today and every day that we are one nation, we are one people, and we stand together. May god bless the families and the loved ones of all who were taken from us this week and comfort their grief with his ever lasting grace and god bless the United States of america, thank you. Well, there you saw the attorney general really emphasizing that we are all americans in what she said was a week of profound grief, starting with the Police Shootings in louisiana and in minnesota and then last night the terrible violence that left five officers at this point dead in dallas, but what she really emphasized was this effort, i think, to try to bring people together and stress the Common Ground that everyone shares in america. At one point, when she said we are all americans, emphasizing we all have a common life, a common heart, a common soul, and then she talked about the victims in the shootings this week in louisiana and minnesota, that there are different backgrounds, but we are all in mourning. Jeff . She said to lawful protesters, do not be discouraged, rete us support one another. Americans are feeling a sense of helplessness this week but violence must never be the answer. Our coverage will continue throughout the day on our 24hour streamic network cbsn. Scott pelley and the team in dallas will have an update tuned and we will also have have the latest on the officerss ambush in dallas later today starting a at 5 00.
