And 90 degrees already, in palmyra. Look at you, 88 for mt. Holly. Oh, i know, deep breath, everybody. Heatwave. Already seen four days of this 90 plus degrees heat. We have one more today, then we start to see break, so today will be our fifth and final day. 94 degrees, thats what were expecting so going out with a bang. Fifty years ago the concept of delivering the news from the scene, with a reporter, and you as eyewitnesses for the story, really revolutionized. At the dawn of tv, Channel Three was really a Ground Breaking station, as well. The first news station to broadcast in color. The first in the city to break the color barrier, with dear colleagues, trudy haynes in the late Malcolm Poindexter it, has been said the history of philly tv news is the history of tv news itself. And that is illustrated in a new book from the images of mercer east called Philadelphia Television and joining me now, the author, bill scholl. As i had a chance to go through it, well share everybody this picture of me from so long ago, it was really fun to be able to see the development of television in philadelphia. What inspired to you put the book together . Well, i grew up here. And i watched Philadelphia Television, like so many of us did, and when the opportunity came along, i couldnt pass it up. I worked in television for many years, and ive known so many of the people who were true broadcast pioneers. When i say pioneers, people who were there at the beginning. The beginning of the technology. The beginning of the news format. You mention Eyewitness News. A man named al primo, invented the format of Eyewitness News, and it took off around the rest of the country. And it real did i pave the way for how news has been broadcast, not just in philadelphia, but, everywhere. Yes, absolutely. Idea every breaking news, film, as opposed to an anchorman sitting there with a graphic. Lets look at some pictures, fun ones that we want to share with you, we now are at 16th and spring garden, but his is our tv station, at 1619 walnut st. That was Channel Threes second home. And it was built for radio. But, in the book, there is a nice cut away, graphic, that shows little room top floor, future tv studio, built the building in the 1930s, were thinking about tv. Okay. So, now, the next thing, how about the mummers. Hoe were the first to broadcast the mummers. Channel three was the first, that picture from 1947. Obviously a cold day. Childrens television, the pete boil show, that was really one of the very first shows for children. It was, pete boil was very popular host. We want to run over couple more pictures, the late tom snyder, the one actually the first to anchor this Eyewitness News at noon program. Another great pioneer in television, mike douglas, broadcast. Broadcast from the walnut st. Building at first, then fifth and market. And thats mike with florence henderson, of course, mike was a legend in daytime television i have to show you this.
