Turner says it started as negro history week but became black History Month in 1976. 1976. Any idea why it went from a week to month . No. I dont. It should be celebrated 365 really. There was a civil rights struggle and then black power. Then as part of the United States bicentennial president gerald ford urged the country to honor the often neglected history of black americans.
