Well have much more on the sudden passing of Justice Scalia and the debate in just a moment. First the philadelphia area is gripped by dangerous cold. Everyone was bundled up from head to toe and temperatures are still dropping. Good evening, im ukee washington. Im jessica dean. Were looking at the cold of the night of the year so far. We get right over to meteorologist kate bilo in the cbs3 weather center. Kate how cold is it going to get. Jessica, ukee, were on our way down into the Single Digits. It will be the coldest night of the year so far. We had a 12degree night back in january. Now were already at 14 degrees and still plenty of hours to drop. Keep in mind we generally hit our overnight low sometime around day break. You can see Single Digits popping up already. Allentown is at 9 degrees right now, lancaster 8 degrees. Mount pocono four below zero. These are the actual temperatures. Not just the wind chills. Wind chills right now just dangerous. Eight below is what it feels like in allentown wind chill of 27 below zero in mount pocono reading seven below and in philadelphia it feels like a big goose egg, zero is the wind chill right now and its going to get colder through the next several hours. Our wind chill advisory in effect for the vast majority of the region until 9 00 a. M. Tomorrow. Wind chills as cold as 15 or 20 below zero in this entire area. But the wind chill warning remains in effect for the poconos. This will be the coldest part of the region. Wind chills could reach 35 below. That kind of wind chill you can get frost bite in about 15, 20 minutes. Tomorrow morning you dont want to be out in that especially if youre far north and west of philadelphia. Next weather maker here it is digging southward as we head through tomorrow and into the start of next week and its going to be a winter storm for us. Were talking snow were talking the threat of ice and were talking rain coming up ill have all the details on that storm and when the arctic air moves out. Thats coming up in the sevenday forecast. For now ukee and jess, back to you. Thank you. We have a full resource guide for dealing with this weekends cold weather on our web site cbsphilly. Com. He was called both provocative an leading conservative voice. Supreme Court JusticeAntonin Scalia has died. The 79yearold was a native of trenton, new jersey. Tonight were learning he died of natural causes. Supreme Court JusticeAntonin Scalia made his mark during his three decades on the Supreme Court. He asked more questions and made more comments than any other judges and was known for his brilliant legal mind. According to the u. S. Marshalls service he was found dead this morning when he didnt show up for breakfast at a resort in west texas. President obama reacted to scalias death. He influenced a generation of judges, lawyers and students and profoundly shaped the leland scape. President Ronald Reagan chose scalia for the high court in 1986, the longest serving member of the current court. Always sticking to his guns, willing to write separate discents arguing the law should be turning in a conservative direction. He was born to italian immigrants in trenton. His family later moved to queens. College took him to Georgetown University and harvard law school. Scalia was one of the staunchest conservative members of the court, a strong advocate for gun rights, privacy and he consistently voted to let states outlaw abortion. In 2012 he talked to charlie rose about one of the courts most famous decisions that led to president george w. Bush taking the white house instead of al gore. You have no regret about that do you. About that case. Yeah. Oh, its a easy case. Chief Justice John Roberts called scalia an extraordinary individual and jurist admired and treasured by his colleagues. His absence on this court cannot be overstated because it will change the balance of the Supreme Court five conservatives, four liberals. President obama says hell submit a nomination to replace scalia in due time. The death of Justice Scalia led off tonights Republican Debate in South Carolina. The candidates honored scalias memory and faced off on a number of other topics. Our own Natasha Brown spent the night with a group of local voters right here at our cbs3 Broadcast Center and were going to talk with them in just a moment but first well take a look at some of the big moments from tonights debate. As the six remaining republican president ial candidates gathered for saturdays debate in greenville, South Carolina, the unexpected death of Supreme Court justice ander nine scalia loomed large. Moderator John Dickerson asked donald trump if he would be okay with president obama nominating a replacement before his term comes to an end. I think hes going to do it whether im okay with it or not. I think its up to Mitch Mcconnell and everybody else to stop it. Its called delay delay delay. Marco rubio wants to see the next president fill the vacancy. The cog is not a living and breathing document. It is to be interpreter as it was meant. It got personal like this exchange between donald trump and jeb bush. Jeb is so wrong. Jeb is absolutely so wrong. Just so you understand, you know what that is, thats jebs special interests and lobbyists talking. They lie said there were weapons of mass destruction. There were none and they knew there were none. Frankly i could careless about the insults that donald trump gives to me. He enjoys it and im glad hes happy about it. I am sick and tired of him going after my family. Echoing his primary night speech in new hampshire, john kasich tried stay above the fray. Bottom line is the people of this country and this state want to see everybody rise and they want to see unity and i dont want to get into all this fighting tonight. Im sick of the negative campaigning and im going stay positive. The candidates talked about how they plan to boost the economy and about the specifics of their tax plans. Starts at the 150 percent Poverty Level but even the people below that have to pay something because everybody has to have skin in the game and millions of people cant talk about what other people have to pay and have no skin in the game. Every time we lessen the burden of washington on Small Business owners on job creators we see incredible economic growth. You do that through tax reform and regulatory reform. A lot of ground covered tonight thats for sure and were taking the poll of local undecide voters. We invited more than a dozen of them to our studios they watched their debate. Now theyre sharing their opinions. Natasha, as we saw in jessicas recap plenty of fireworks tonight. Reporter absolutely. Plenty of response here from our local voters and we have invited them to the studios to gauge their reaction from the debate tonight. The folks have been watching very closely and listening to these candidates. Many say they do that appreciate this spirited debate that went on tonight but some of them say they would like to hear more from the candidates. When i would the candidates engaged in a spirited debate in South Carolina we were gauging reaction from local voters every step of the way. We tracked the responses of these voters gathered in our studio in realtime using keypad technology. Their likes and dislikes depending on the exchanges between the candidates. Jeb is so wrong. This is a man who reporter the continuous heated verbal sparring between jeb bush and donald trump also created the most reaction from local voters. Most seem to appreciate the feisty tone of this debate. I think its very energetic. I think that donald trump is getting on peoples nerves. You can hear it from the audience. I think it was good for jeb bush to go back. But i think its been lively and were getting a lot of information and insight. Reporter between the occasional outburst of laughter nods of agreement or disagreement all of it captured by a touch of a button. Before the debate began we asked which candidate this group of mostly Republican Voters were leaning before. Marco rubio with 29 percent tied with john kasich. Despite having a double digit lead in the polls donald trump trailed with 19 percent among our local panel. You saw rubio trying to defend the bush legacy saying he kept america safe and you saw trump sort of well not sort of he was definitely opposing that legacy and its kind of interesting to see how the bush legacy is hanging over this election even though hes been out of office for eight years now. Reporter on the heels of the sudden death of Supreme Court justice ander nine scalia the candidates addressed whether the president should nominate a Supreme Court justice to replace him. Our voters were split on that topic but they overwhelmingly believed the senate should delay confirming a new Supreme Court justice. I would like to hear what values or what yeah, what values these president ial candidates would want in a judicial nominee. Reporter we also asked voters do you like the way trump is handling the debate. 81 percent said no. What are they going really do as a leader . What will be one, two and three and thats what i want to hear from anybody not just a few people. I think if we dont find a way to stop the bleedout from jobs thats plaguing the nation none of this discussion is going matter one way or the other. Reporter there are lots of reactions from our voters that are gathered here in our studios tonight. The debate is over. Many of them we asked before the debate even started which candidate they were leaning toward and we can tell you tonight that that has shifted dramatically since the beginning of the debate. Were going to let you know those results coming up in just a bit. Were live here in studio b. Back to you, ukee and jessica. Very, very interesting stuff, natasha. Thanks so much and thanks to all the voters who are here with us tonight. Lets take a look now at the democratic side of the race. Back home and in other news tonight a fire tears through an auto body shop in the 4600 block of bristol street this morning leaving little behind. Eyewitness News Reporter anita oh spoke to a neighbor who was there as the blaze burned for hours. Looked like a towering inferno. Blazing 15, 20 feet in the air. The building behind this building caught fire. The building on that side caught fire. It was a mess. It was crazy. Reporter isaac perry saw it from directly across the street. I seen one firefighter he had to go in there drag him output him on a stretcher. He wasnt moving. He was laying limp. Another came running out of there, he fell to his knees and took his mask off to catch his breath. Reporter Officials Say a mother and child were also taken to the hospital for minor injuries. As the night and temperatures fell, crews had to deal with an entirely different element. These frigid wintry conditions are making things tough for firefighters with ice like this lining the streets, fire hydrants and cars also frozen over. Freezing out here. Temperatures feel like its below zero. Reporter volunteers set up a warming and Evacuation Center for neighbors and First Responders of the frankford friends school. Brides to be from around the area lined up for hours in the freezing cold. Find out why they were so many of you watched the Republican Debate here on cbs tonight and we hosted a group of undecided voters to our studios to get their perspective. Natasha brown is live in the Broadcast Center with more on what the voters thought before the debate and what they think now that its over. Natasha. Reporter well, weve certainly seen a drastic difference actually in what our voters were thinking before the debate even started and the candidates they were leaning toward then as opposed to who theyre leaning towards now. Lets give you some idea as we have been able to gauge this in realtime. Rubio 29 percent, kasich 29 percent and trump at 19 percent. That was before the debate. Now lets take a look at the numbers after the debate ended and how they certainly shifted dramatically. Rubio went from 29 percent to 43 percent among our local voters. John kasich stayed about the same and donald trump actually saw a dramatic drop from 19 to 5 percent. And when asked overall who they thought performed the best during this debate our group of local voters thought marco rubio certainly did. So, that is just kind of what weve been gauging here in the studio tonight with our voter whos have taken the time out of their night to watch the debate with us and also a person who helped to make this all possible and helped us gauge reaction so quickly and so easily ben with magna legal services. Thanks for being with us tonight. Tell me what you were seeing there. We were able to see the drops and declines like i said in realtime with voters. Yeah, the biggest decline you saw when trump went on attack mode people here rating in realtime really didnt seem to like that and the biggest spike came when they were asked whether president obama should be able to elect a new justice and that was overwhelmingly no. And did you see any surprises, anything that you thought okay this is interesting were getting lots of reaction here . No, nothing out of the ordinary, no. Reporter okay. All right, well, thank you so much im do appreciate you helping to orchestrate all of this for us we do appreciate that. Again, we appreciate all of our voters tonight. Give yourselves a round of applause. Thank you guys. We so appreciate you being here with us and being so honest and candid with us in what you thought about tonights gop debate. Thats the latest here. Back to you in the studio. Thanks to all of them for providing us with some really interesting insight natasha. Thank you to you as well. We appreciate it. Be sure to stay with Eyewitness News for continuing coverage of campaign 2016. Well always have the latest to your on air and also at cbsphilly. Com. Pope francis is wrapping up his first full day in mexico. Bells tolled as he rode on his popemobile through mexico city. At the president ial palace the leader of the Catholic Church delivered a message of tough love to mexican politicians. He told them not to be seduced by privilege but to offer true justice and meet the basic needs of allyiay morning and we are in that time frame right now. So this is the worst of it which is good because it can only get better from here right. As we head into tomorrow morning thats the apex of the cold and then were tracking a winter storm as we head into the start of next week. Weve got a lot to get to here in your weather forecast. Lets start with how it feels right now. Well take you out to our roof cam in center city, hopefully not too many people out on the streets tonight but those that are bundle up that. Wind is going to find a way to make you cold. Even if you think youre completely bundled up the wind finds those crevices and it is a biting wind. The wind chill advisory still remains in effect. But a beautiful looking night as long as youre in a warm spot looking out over center city. As always check on anyone you know that may need help staying warm tonight and of course we still have that code blue in effect across much of the region. Storm scan3 is clear right now. We had snow squalls move through earlier in the day. Those slithers sort of speak can really reduce the visibility rapidly but they moved on out just as quickly. Nothing going on just a few streamers, a couple snow showers across upstate new york. Our next storm will pull in moisture and really approach our area during the day monday into to us. Much more on that coming up but lets start with the cold. Temperatures right now 14 in philadelphia its 9 degrees in allentown its four below zero right now in mount pocono and as we head through the overnight hours well be down to around 5 degrees. I dont think well be near that record because the wind stays pretty strong but within about 3 degrees of the record here in philadelphia and the wind chill when you wake up will be teens below zero basically just about everywhere. It will feel like minus 32 in mount pocono. That is dangerous wind chill. 5 degrees the overnight low here in philadelphia. Tomorrows high for your valentines day 19 sunny breezy and frigid. We should be in the mid 40s this time of the year. Future weather keeps us pretty clear. Lots of sunshine through your sunday but then monday the clouds roll in and by midday monday right around the lunch hour here comes a little snow. It could intensify a bit in the afternoon so the monday evening commute doesnt look great but notice we start to see the rain work in, this big intrusion of warm air and eventually the snow and ice restreets and rain takes over. We could see an inch or two of snow before the rain comes in. A little bit more in our north and west counties. Most concerned about the potential for a little bit more ice off to the west and north especially if that cold air hong on hangs on longer. In philadelphia looks like a relatively rapid changeover from snow and again possibly one to 2 inches of snow over to rain around six or 7 oclock monday night and then just heavy rain all day tuesday especially heavy for the first half of the day. And look at the difference in temperature. We surge to 50 degrees. If that storm were to stay off shore, guys, this would be a major snow or ice storm for us. Luckily its taking the track that its taking. Its more of a rain maker and then finally some quiet weather later next week. I like the sound of that. Kate thank you. Whats going up next in sports. It might be cold outside. Number one villanova a 27point favorite could they cover . Plus flyers had a date with the devils this afternoon and lost a key member of the ive been a turkey farmer my whole life. And i raise turkey for shady brook farmsĀ®. No growthpromoting antibiotics, just honest, simple turkey. It has been a wild year atop the ncca mens basketball polls. Villanova is the sixth team to reach number one which is one shy of the record for a season. Nothing has been easy this year but this matchup for nova looked it at least on paper. Nova welcomed in saint johns who had lost 15 straight coming in. They were 27point favorites but it was fight throughout. Heres daniel rolling to the bucket. He had a nice night. Heres the big man once again. Hes running the floor so look out. Big man with the dunk. He had 25 on the night. Nova would pull away late as Ryan Arcidiacono knocks down a three. Nova wins 7363. Jay wright knows it wasnt pretty. Dave hakstol said this weekend would be a great opportunity for his team to make up ground in the standings. With 29 games remaining the flyers were four points back of the final wild card spot heading into action. And the devils they were ahead of them fighting for that same position. In the first period devils on the power play Joseph Blandisi with a tricky stick work past Michal Neuvirth to make it onenothing. Flyers had just two shots in the first but they picked it up from there and of course it was Shayne Gostisbehere from the point his tenth goal of the year set the flyers club record for rookies with a point in 11 straight games. Ton overtime, two on one and Brayden Schenn cannot finish so of course you know what happens after that. Devils on the power play Adam Henrique would bury it and wip it for new jersey by a score of two to one. Very important for to us win. Theyre a game ahead of us in the standings four points. We definitely needed the two points out of it. At least we got one but yeah, its a big two points we needed. More bad news flyers lost defenseman Michael Del Zotto to a wrist injury. Andrew mcdonald has been recalled and the flyers have a big one. They face the rangers tomorrow night. Its the start of a five game road trip.
