Right now at 11 00 oclock a winter storm leaves its mark all across the delaware valley. Shovels are out in full force as the cleanup slowly begins. The snow quickly covering roadways creating treacherous conditions out there. This cab in center stow philadelphia fishtailed right down market street. It was a slippery time as well for people walking out there as the snow began changing over to freezing rain. Right now storm scan3 shows that change overtaking place and most of the snow is moving out of the region and freezing rain and rain taking over. Good evening everyone, im Natasha Brown. Thanks for joining us. Temperature will be climbing throughout the night but were not out of the woods just yet. At the bottom of your screen you will see a number of closures and delays so please take note of that. We also have live team three coverage for you of this saturday storm. Thats brought us a mix of pretty much everything. Lets begin with meteorologist Justin Drabick live on the sky deck tracking whats happening at this hour. Justin. Good evening natasha. Thats right. Still dealing with light freezing rain right now temperature hovering around 32 degrees you may be wondering is next to me this is actually a coat rack a metal coat rack we stuck out here to see how much ice we could accumulate. There is a little icy creeks on here maybe hard to see but enough of a glaze to cause some problems much this is what youll be dealing with over the next hour or so if you head outside youll have have oh scrape your car and streets right here in center city still slush covered with some ice. Just be careful if youre heading out overnight. Heres whats happening on storm scan3. Still decent amount of moisture left and we are seeing a lot of areas of pink indicating the freezing rain but notice the green. The plane rain moving in from the south that will be the trend over the next few hours. By midnight should be dealing with plane rain here in philadelphia. Little bit farther to the north still light snow shower activity breaking out across the far northwestern suburbs. Zoom in closer to southern new jersey you can see that rain and freezing rain line moving into camden, gloucester counties. So improving conditions as far as south and Central Jersey goes as temperatures climb above freezing. Were still under the winter storm warnings and Winter Weather advisories through the region as well. But visibles getting better. Still down to half a mile in reading due to some snow but up to 4 miles for philadelphia in parts of southern new jersey up to six in dover so better driving conditions overnight as far as the visibility goes but the damage has been done. Check it out. Looks like the sweet spot was down in northern delaware parts of Chester County as far as the snow goes and in new jersey. Bear, delaware, 6. 5inches. Drexel hill 6. 2. Voorhees half a too much 5inches in levittown and in philadelphia officially 4. 5 at the airport. That makes it the highest storm this season so far for snowfall. Winter storm warnings still remain in effect for the areas in pink including philadelphia Winter Weather advisories up in the poconos. Well be tracking warmer temperatures and some improving conditions for the rest of the weekend with those details lets send it ba tock kathy. Thank you very much justin. We were outside slipping and sliding on the sidewalk. It only takes a thin amount of ice just 100th of an inch to create in that graze glaze. But reduced visible continues tonight. So please be aware of those warmer temperatures also coming across the colder snow pack createing additional Poor Visibility with fog overnight. Another concern. So as we work our way through the late night hours and overnight were looking at light sleet to the north and west and freezing rain. It will be changing over to rain but you may see that light Ice Accumulation that will make it very slick if it looks wet its icy changing to rain from southeast to north and west. Over the next two to three hours and once again areas of fog once that rain and warmer air moves n you can see our future weather lining up temperatures at or just above freezing from philadelphia to the south and east. Still cold below freezing to the north and west. Overnight tonight that warm air will lift in but see the lehigh val and also reading. Reading the borderline but allentown you will end as little bit of an icy mix. And then everything moves on shore. Tomorrow morning at 8 00 a. M. Everyone above freezing with the exception of the poconos. Look at wildwood. 42 degrees. So it will ab mild day. And by the late morning early afternoon the sun will come out believe it or not. Now the snow did cause slippery roadways and numerous crashes a car slammed no a pole on route 1 in chadds ford, delaware county. Thankfully we have not seen any crashes. We can show was the road looks locate right now. Pretty clear right now. Snowplows have made their way through this region several times in the last two hours or so basically its turned to rain what were seeing here in willow grove is similar what weve seen across our area. We have some video should show you from the cbs3 mobile weather lab as it drove around our area today. Roadways certainly covered with snow and now a little bit of ice. As this change over continues. It certainly made penndots battle an you will hill one as we spoke to some of their officials a little bit earlier today. Simply put bucks county roads were werent pretty saturday sometimes slushy sometimes snowy all of it difficult for drivers to get through. Be more careful. Yeah. Very slow. Take your time. Taking my time, yes. Reporter side streets are one thing, of course. Main roads another. The well traveled portion of street road in warminster saw its fair share of snowplows but in the end the snowflakes won out. Saturdays snow was no surprise of course weve known about the potential for accumulations since late week. Penndot has too and says they did what they could proactive. This starting off as a plowing operation. We had a chance to get output material down. We had our plows ready. Reporter when the snowfalls of rates an inch an hour like it did saturday, nearly impossible to keep up. Penndot it takes hours to complete 140mile psych kerr our crews are out working hard to keep roads passible. Something plow operator gary riley understands. Theyre doing good job. Just keeping up with it is half the battle report roar another man who spends his time on the roads postal employee darrell washington. His review of the 400 some penndot trucks working the streets theyre doing pretty good yeah. They should have jumped on it earlier but its pretty good. Reporter and so as we mention earlier the snow that we saw during the afternoon is turned into a light freezing rain and its resulted in that kind of ice that kind of glaze that were seeing in the parking lot here that were standing on right now. That kind of ice is what penndot tells me will be focusing on overnight. They will have hundreds of trucks remain out on area roadways overnight to do what they can to keep roadways safe. Now the cold weather meantime is to blame for a water main break in philadelphias Port Richmond neighbor. Service has been restored to about 100 homes on the 3000 block of tulip street. Authorities say an 8inch main snapped just after 9 00 oclock this morning. And water started pouring into the basements of at least 10 homes. This is a brutal time of year. Certainly the temperatures not helping. The water temperature going to the mains is extremely cold. Breaking many mains around the city and we ask for patience as we get out there and make repairs as quickly as we can. The red cross did help families displaced by that water main break. And an Apartment Fire forced 22 adults and 14 kids into the cold in lindenwold, Camden County today. Flames ripped through the Emerald Ridge apartments on gibbsboro road about 3 00 oclock this morning. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting from the rooftop of that building. They were able to quickly contain the fire despite battling extreme cold. Trying to do the best we can with what we have at that time. Luckily the winds have died down down. So that wasnt a contributing factor. Four units were damaged and there were no injuries reported but the cause remains under investigation. Now for kids today, it was the perfect day for sledding. Take look in virginia drivers had pretty tough time down there getting from point a to point b as much as 10inches of snow fell in parts of my home state actually and after the snow, came the freezing rain. Also, in tennessee a state of emergency was declared after various bouts of Winter Weather including snow, sleet and freezing rain. Roads near chatanooga turned into ice skating ring and thick sheets of ice rendered rendered roads impossible. Ice brought down power lines leaving many in the dark. Back here at home we are starting to finally see the transition from snow to freezing rain to rain out there. Good evening natasha. Weve seen it all today. We had the light fluff tee snow earlier, this afternoon sleet freezing rain noun were just dealing with plane rain here empty city with temperatures 33 degrees. I mentioned the fluffy snow earlier thats gone now with the rain its just a pack down snow and easy to mick snowballs great for that. Just watch out be careful theres icy spots especially on those treated sidewalks because we have a thin glaze of ice from this freezing rain but look whats happening on storm scan3. You starting to see tail end of the system a little bit some of that moisture is breaking up to the north and west notice the area of plane rain indicated by green on the radar. Its starting to creep farther north so temperatures are warming up so thats better news for the overnight drive if you have to head out. Still leftover light snow showers north and west of the city. You get up to northern bucks and Montgomery County and there could be still a light accumulation around the city could be a few pockets of light freezing rain but mostly plane rain is starting to move into the region you can see some heavier rain now breaking out across parts of salem county new jersey indicated by the yellow there on Doppler Radar so still pocks heavy rain at times over the next few hours. The snow has ended for the most part and again that sweet spot has been in parts of delaware and new jersey. 5inches in newark delaware. Mt. Laurel at 4. 8. 4. 4 in williamstown and in wynnewood, pennsylvania. In Kennett Square comes in just shy of 4inches. Now, we do have to mention light Ice Accumulation possible. A few hundredths of an inch basically from the city on northward. And it only takes few hundredths of an inch to cause slick spots out there on the roads just keep that in point. The good news at least we had snow down initially that helps outpatient the track little bit. There are the temperatures above freezing in philadelphia. 33 degrees its sitting at freezing in wilmington. 34 in Atlantic City and in wildwood. Allentown reading still in the mid 20s. So theres going to be some frozen precipitation through the overnight hours. You guys may not even see the change over to plane rain by the time the storm system is out of here 36 in washington. So we do have milder air moving in from the south that will continue to be the trend through the overnight hours looks like well catch a break from the cold tomorrow before another blast of arctic air moves back into the delaware valley. But william you guys will be changeing over to just plain old rain but remember the ground temperature is colder than the air temperature. So you still could see some icy patches on the ground that subfreezing even the temperatures are above freezing. Upper darby bill is reporting 33 degrees. Hes seeing rain right now and lets take you to the north and west we still have temperatures that are well below freezing. Jim reporting in a temperature of 26 degrees in royersford. Temperatures slowly rising light sleet but roads are still slick. I want to show you some of our snow accumulations from our weather watchers. Because these are impressive and as justin had mentioned some of the higher amounts through southeastern pennsylvania near the i95 corridor and through south jersey landenberg six upon five. In Burlington Township 6inches. Levittown 6inches. Somerdale 5. 9. Glasgow, delaware, 5. 5. Wilmington over five. Newark over five. Collingswood five. And even in lawrenceville 4. 25inches of snow. Now, heres a lock outside where were seeing some areas of fog. So we have warm air moving in over that fresh cold snow pack and that will create some fog overnight. Please be aware of that. This is the view from campbells field of course of the ben franklin bridge. We cant even see the skyline indicating that visibility could be an issue overnight. Area of low pressure will be lifting to our north and to the east. That means tomorrow some milder air with some sunshine temperatures in the 40s. Get out, enjoy it.
