In philadelphia this is cbs3 Eyewitness News. Trying to beat the heat turns dangerous as a man is seriously injured jumping into a local quarry. That is just one of the dangers of the sweltering temperatures. Good evening, im chris may. Jessica is off tonight. And we are gearing up for more sizzling weather. Lets check first with meteorologist kathy orr. Shes outside on the cbs3 sky deck with the heat advisory that goes into effect tomorrow. Kathy. Yes, more summer sizzling heat and humidity. It will be hotter tomorrow. It will be more humid and it is going to feel oppressive across the delaware valley. Right now, were looking at dry conditions and a little bit of a its helping to cut through that muggy air mass sitting over us. We are seeing some showers and thunderstorms to the north and west of us, and some of these will be moving into places like the poconos and possibly the northern Lehigh Valley and then dying out. More numerous showers and thunderstorms will be coming over the next couple of days. Right now, 81 in philadelphia. The air is so thick. Allentown 81. 83 in reading. 82 in wilmington. That heat advisory goes into effect at noon and it continues through the day wednesday when you combine the heat and humidity, it will feel like its around 100 degrees and we are going to be seeing even warmer temperatures. Coming up, near record warmth expected. Ill have the numbers, plus the threat of Severe Weather returns in this warm and humid air mass. Swimming is one way to stay cool in the heat but swimming in the wrong place we know can be dangerous. A man was seriously injured this afternoon in a quarry dive and only cbs3 was there for his rescue. Eyewitness News Reporter Todd Quinones joins us live now from Jefferson Hospital with more on what happened there. Todd . Reporter chris, 3984 old man who jumped into a quarry in Chester County tonight had to be rushed here. He suffered an apparent spinal injury. Early Police Reports indicate that 39 year old man jumped into the quarry on saint peters road in warwick township, Chester County, to try and cool off and beat the heat. Thats when he suffered an apparent spinal injury. Because of the 30degree slope leading into the quarry, a specially trained Technical Rescue Team had to be called in to pull the man out. One patient complaining of numbness in the legs report roar his injuries were so serious that 39 year old was flown to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital at around 5 30. The incident is a stark reminder of the dangers of jumping into quarries and creeks. On this bridge over Pennypack Creek in philadelphia theres memorial to those who have lost their lives here including 13 year old Brandon Boyle who died here just last year. Teens still swim here. I really just dont go out too deep. Go out right there. Just to cool down. Reporter beth lost her 15 year old sonic key in 1996. He was trying save his friend near this dam when both were swept away and died. She has message to those looking to cool off in the coming months ahead. Stay out of the creek. If you love your mothers and your fathers, dont leave them to have lifetime of sadness. All right. Todd, thank you. New at 11 00 oclock tonight, we meet a 13 year old boy who was targeted by a gunman as he searched for his stolen bike. Just released from the hospital he sat down with our Elizabeth Hur. She joins us live outside south detectives now. Liz . Reporter chris, this seventh grader says his stepfather had just picked him up from school and they were driving around looking for his stolen bike. Thats when someone approached them, claiming for 20 that stolen bike can be returned. Were told the stepfather was willing to pay, but the gunman still fired away. Lucky he missed my vessels. Just released from the hospital now with a bullet still lodged in his arm and his leg still bandaged the bullet went like through here like hyped and came out over here. Report roar this 13 year old asked that we dont use his name with the shooter and his accomplice still out there. I was like scared. And i like i was so nervous. Reporter it happened monday afternoon here at corner of 20th and morris. He says he was there trying to recover his bike that looks like this one. He says it was stolen the day before near 20th and tasker when he let his friend borough it. Push him off the bike and they was threatening him. The seventh grader said the bike was a Birthday Gift from his stepfather. So together they were driving around trying to recover the bike. He backed up and pull out the gun and started shooting at the door eight times. Reporter an undercover detective in the area for an unrelated case witnessed the shooting and saw the two men run into a home nearby. The swat team responded but the suspects were gone. Luck killly the win did he was strong enough. But it went through the car door. Thats how i got hit. Reporter police say this victim was shot at point blank range. So you can imagine why this 13 year old is just grateful to be alive. As for the investigation, police say while they have recovered two weapons, again, still no suspects. Fiery scene on route 70 in cherry hill tonight as seen from chopper three. This wire came down across the highway near cuthbert boulevard. It caught fire in both the east and westbound lanes. The roadway had to be closed for time which, of course, led to big traffic backups. But at this hour one lane in each direction is getting by. It is still unclear why those wires came down. Chopper three over a house fire in harleysville, Montgomery County torque night. This happened in the seven around 7 00 oclock in the 600 block of northfield lane. Police say the people inside that home did get out safely. There is no word on how it started. Some dramatic new video could shed light on deadly house fire in wilmington. A neighbor captured this cell phone video of the house as it was engulfed in flames on bird street last night. One man died here, and two women were injured. Family members say that 49 year old Francine Wallace suffered burns over 80 of her body. They believe that someone doused this home with gasoline and then set it on fire. Well two people are dead in bizarre accident in wilmington manor, delaware. State police say that a Jeep Cherokee went out of control on route 13, crashing into two ca cars. It then careened off the road and into a person riding a lawnmower at wilmington university. The driver of the jeep 25 year old derek win of new castle and the lawnmower operator 20 year old Francisco Jimenez flor were both killed. The cause of that accident is still under investigation. Eyewitness news with an exclusive video of a bear in mt. Laurel today. Take look at this. One of our photographers Allen Wheeler shot this video of the bear. He came across it on teal street early this morning. The bear went from yard to yard even near a busy roads like 295. And on oh hot day like this even took time to take a dip in nearby pond. Authorities dont believe this bare poses a danger but they do offer this advice. We recommend not chasing him. Dont follow him. No selfies trying get pictures with him. You just are going to create a problem if you do that. At least two bears have wanderewandered into populated f south jersey recently. There havent sights in evesham, waterford and winslow townships. Five Year Old Girl is among two People Killed when tornadoes roar across a small farming down in nebraska. Shes been identified tonight as callista dixon. Callistas mother is in a medically induced coma. They were the victims of twin tornadoes that cut a path of destruction across the town of pilger. Population 350. Up to 75 of the buildings in that town have been destroyed. We were in a Little Corner of the basement and the house just lifted right off the top of us. I i know this community is a tough knit community. Their motto is a town too tough to die. At least 19 others were taken to hospitals north jersey nanny climbs down a 15foot hole all to rescue a three Year Old Girl. This happened in hackettstown, warren county. That nanny reported heard the girl from next door screaming and then later found her up to her neck in water in a hole covered by grass. When police arrived, the woman was already halfway down trying to rescue the child. Now once a ladder was in place the nanny helped bring the little girl to safety and then handed her off to emergency personnel. They put a ladder down and they were trying to do different way. I said, no, just give me the ladder down and ill climb up. Well be fine because shes very tiny. My other hand i tried stepping up. Well, the three year old was taken to the hospital as a precaution but is expected to be okay. Exploding wine bottles trigger a safety alert tonight. Bottles of sparkling white wine called indigenous selections prosecco brood 2013 have been pulled from fine wine and Good Spirit Stores in pennsylvania. There were several reports of full bottles exploding in stores. But its not clear why. If you have purchased this wine, you can get a refund and the Pennsylvania Liquor control board says you should dispose of the bottle with care. New at 11 00 oclock, a group of nuns is suing their next door neighbor a strip club. They want it shut down. This is battle that has been brewing for years between club allure and the elderly sisters of Saint Charles near chicago. The sisters say the club is noisy until 5 00 a. M. And that customers leave trash around the area. They also say the club is within a thousand feet of a religious institution which would be a violation of state law. A lot of our sisters are elderly. Her recall involved fuel tank. Small chance of experiencing a fuel leak during certain rearend collisions can result in an under body fire. They told me it could take weeks or it could take months. For seven months, brett, left his two dodge trucks parked while waiting for recall repairs on the tie rods. They tell me theyre usable but youre taking your life in your own hands. The recall notice says could cause a loss of directional control and or crash without warning. Ive had clients waiting months and months and months for parts to get their car fixed and theres no end in site. Dealers dont know when theyre coming in. The inform tsb has strict rules about how and when a recall is issued 6789 of. Under the law consumers are entitled to a remedy win a residential time. But the word residential isnt defined. They cant fix the car where theres no parts available. Reporter attorney Bob Silverman says if a vehicle is out of service because of 30 days because of a recall condition that cant be fixed or because parts arent availability owners dont have to sit and wait things out. If you have a brand new car you might have a lemon law cla claim. You might be entitled to all your money back. If you have a used car or a car under warranty or out of warranty sitting down with no end in sight youre entitle to do compensation. Often its not a case of making additional parts. Were talking about heat and humidity combining to make it feel like its close to 100 degrees and because of the spring that we had and the cold winter that we had were really not used to this. Take lookout side where we do have some hazy, hot and humid conditions. Look at the home of the river sharks looks a little busy late this evening. Were talking about a little bit of a breeze out there right now. But that will be dying down. On storm scan3, theres a line of showers and thunderstorms some of these severe moving through central new york, also northern western pennsylvania, moving toward williamsport. These have history of large hail, torrential downpours and damaging winds. The good news by the time they make it toward the poconos, they will just be some isolated thunderstorms. And if they make it into our northern and western suburbs most likely to be spotty showers overnight tonight. But that line will regenerate for tomorrow evening. So we will be in for the threat of Severe Weather across part of the region. Right now, it is still warm. It is still humid. The High Temperature today made it up to 93 degrees. Still 81 in philadelphia. 81 in allentown. 83 in reading. And 75 degrees in the poconos. Remember those days that we would have just loved to have a high in the 70s . Well now were talking about 90s. Elsewhere, pretty warm temperatures throughout the region from albany new york all the way down through richmond. High pressure will be parked off the coast. This is a summer like pattern. A bermuda high setting up pumping in heat and humidity. Temperatures running about 10 to 15 degrees above normal tomorrow. Highs will be at least in the mid 90s. And then this front moves through creating some showers and thunderstorms again for thursday afternoon, highs in the 80s then we break the humidity. This High Pressure system to the north and canada with a northerly wind drier air pushing this front to the south, and we get in on some refreshing air. It will be a pleasant change for friday with High Temperatures in the low 80s and weekend stays that way as well. But for tomorrow, that Severe Weather threat mainly through the poconos, the Lehigh Valley down through berks county and also lancaster cun tee. Heavy downpours the possibility of hail and damaging winds and this threat will be mainly tomorrow afternoon and evening. Overnight, parly cloudy, warm and muggy in philadelphia and its adjacent suburb, at you move farther to the north and west especially in the poconos a chance avenue spotty thunderstorm. The low 74.
