The movie about kyle is up for an oscar tonight night. The former marine who has shot kyle has pleaded not guilty by reason f insanity. Manuel bojorquez reports. Reporter injuries this week saw two faces of confessed killer eddie routh. The marine in his uniform standing next to his mother. The other, a man who was spiring out of control. For a mid pros kiertss must prove he is a man who knew right from wrong. Yesterday they called psychologist randall price to the stand. He said routh did know what he was doing was wrong and he did it anyway. Audio of the reporting is restricted. Routh killed kyle, which is the basis of the movie american sniper and kyles friend chad littlefield. They tried to help him by spending time with him at a shooting range two years ago. Routh said he felt the men were ignored them and he admitted he waited till kyle was unloading his gun to open fire. He testified, when i shot them, i thought, jesus christ what have i done, and then i became immediately remorseful. On thursday defense witness dr. Mitchell dunn told jurors he believed routh suffers from schizophrenia and was delusional. He said routh told him that quote, he began to think that mr. Kyle and mr. Littlefield were pig assassins hired to kill people. He said he felt threatened when he saw kyles weapons and he said he thought he would have to kill them or be killed. In court family mens of the victims became visibly upset when details of the shootings were discussed. If the jury of ten women and two men are found guilty, he could spend life in prison. For cbs this Morning Saturday, manuel bojorquez, stephensville, texas. Cbs legal analyst Rikki Klieman joins us now. What entertainment. Theyre showing the movie three miles from the courthouse. Tell us whats going on. As manuel mentioned some people who have testified include his family. Indeed they include his family. What you look at is where the insanity defense all maltby lays, which is its not only an skpirt who would testify on above of the defendant that he was suffered from schizophrenia and therefore did not know right from wrong, but you have family members who have seen him, you have friends who have seen him. And its a process of three hospitalizations. Severe, very veer mental disease and nine medications. So you would certainly think that from the defense side that they have met their burden of the preuponponderance of the evidence. You could have had a legion of psychiatric experts who could have come in and testify about this mans delusional state. However, this is my guess, but i know im right what you have here is a question of cost. If you have someone who is healthy who can afford to bring in expert after expert it would have helped the defense. One psychiatristsighpsychiatrist here, very tough. Its interesting because in fiction we so often here insanity as a defense. But i was reading in 1 of cases can they prove its very difficult to prove. Very very difficult to prove. Especially in a place like texas where the standard is so strict to sim will i do no right from wrong. But in terms of the prosecution says not only does he not suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder certainly doesnt suffer from schizophrenia tells the jury hes faking his schizophrenia, lingering, which means he must have fooled a lot of people for a long period of time. But when you have that battle of experts, are they going to ultimately cancel each other out, and from the prosecution side we must remember voluntary intoxication and drug use on top of the things that carry the day for the government. Very interesting. Thank you. Police are looking for three girls on their way maybe to syria to help with isis. One who is 15 and one is 16 caught a flight without telling their families. Experts are watching one generation in particular one that could hold the keys to the recover rye. Here on that is mike aubrey, a licensed realtor and host of the hgtv show power broker. Good morning to you. That was a mouthful for me. Good morning. What do you see being behind the Housing Market uptick . I think whats happened right now is theres a baen to being passed. I think generation x was the big sector buying houses and is being passed to the millennials or hopefully its being passed. What were seeing and what im concerned about and what a lot of them are concerned about is do millennials have that lead the way i did and the way that my parents did and i dont know that anybody really knows the answer as to whether north thats going to happen or not. Yeah. Strict lending standards are one of the things. Are they easing up at all . I dont know that lending standards are easing up as much as were seeing down payments get a little bit lower. The dodd frank act made it harder to get a loan. What happened in 2005 if you could fog up a piece of glass somebody would give you money and the pendulum would swing to other side and it got to the point where people with good credit add assets were havinging a difficult time getling loans. Lets talk about the federal Housing Administration annual insurance premiums because theyve dropped. They dropped dramatically at the beginning of 2015. Why do you think they changed so much . You know i think fha is trying to remain player in the loan landscape right now. Sort of as i said everybodys looking to the millennials to revive the real estate mark and while doing, that fha and conventional loan lemders want to sort of come up with spaces where people who have good money but dont have a lot of money in the bank are able to buy houses and i think this is all about attracting that next big group of buyers. Do you think they want to by mike . You know, im concerned. I hope so. Theres some zillo data out there that says most millennials do that. Knock on wood. I hope so. Its interesting. They want to be in the city. A lot of them dont want to be in the suburbs. The other thing thats interesting, as high as renltd is going, theres going to be a point where theyre going to have look at real estate ownership because its not going to make Financial Sense not to look at it. Thanks for joining us. Thank you. Usa today reports a virus that appears to have kill add man in kansas. This is the malcolm x that everyone remembers, the controversial leader preaching equality by any means necessary. Your fathers message, do you feel its been misinterpreted over the years . Oh sure. I understand the need for people to hold on to the strength associated with him, hour they do him a disservice, an injustice, when they excerpt him and redefine him in their ways and not as he is. Reporter here in Harlem Malcolm was the voice of black frustration, angry over poverty, police brutality, and segregation. Critics labeled him a militant. Supporters say he was uncompromising in his mission. Thats what he told a young cbs reporter named mike wallace who was in servearch of the real malcolm x. They are frustrated because they dont know. Jon, tell us about this drug. Its for someone with hyperactive sexual disorder and this is discreased libido and also a woman cares about it. Its distressing. This is the third time theyre putting it out for approval and it works supposedly the makers say by rearranging the transmitters in your head. The idea is it would rearrange those and get them more in some sort of symphony where lub bee doe has to work correctly. I have to say to hear any drug has not passed twice and is up for a third time makes me nervous. What is the holdup on this . Sure. Theres certainly an outcry for women to have options to improve their libido like men do. We only want options that work. Manufacturers say they have provided evidence on about 11,000 women that the drug may increase sexual desire increase the number of times women have sex each month and increase their satisfaction with it. The fda doesnt see it that way. Theyre not sure it meets all those end points and they have concerns about side effects interactions with other drugs and sleepiness. So its not straightforward. As holly points out there are a number of drugs on the market for men, so why is this so tricky . First i want to emphasize this is for premen pause all women. And, yes it is true there are a lot of drugs out for men and there is viagra that women think about. It increases blood flow below the waist, help wither erectile function. It does not help primarily with above the neck. Its the same thing with this drug. It does not do anything me mechanical below the waist. Its above the neck. Thats much more complicated whechbl you think of all that goes into libido theres the kids in the house, youre tired, you like sex in the morning, she likes it at night. Its very difficult to tease it out. Thats why its so hard to prove any pill is actually doing the trick. Another big story in Womens Health this week a new study finds hot flashes and other menopause symptoms could last much longer than previously thought. So holly, tell us about this study. Its a very large study, actually the largest one to date on this particular issue. We know that about 80 of women right before they start menopause and earring leads up to it and through menopause experience hot flashes or vai sew sow vai sow motor symptoms. This study shows hot flashes can last 7 years to as long as 14 years. In fact, the earlier the hot flashes start, the longer they last. It really sort of changes the way we thought about it. Do hot flashes only occur after menopause . No. I do want to emphasize and i think its been overlooked this study is talking about women with severe hot flashes, six or more. The women who had fewer than six got thrown out of the study. If they get hot flashes while they still have their period, it clearly lasted for euros. Clearly no women looks forward to this. What was interesting in this study was that race and e ethnicity has something to do with the duration. It could be that there are genetic factors at play. It also could be social and lifestyle issues that are affecting all of the women involved. Scientists are praising what could be mayer advance in the battle against hiv. Researchers create add way to block the vie vus infecting cells in animals. This seems like a huge development. This is really a big deal. Now, again its early. Its only been done and its really a few lab animal but it represents an entirely new approach to both treating and potentially preventing hiv through a process thats quite similar to gene therapy. Basically the way that hiv attacks our body is that it enters our cells really through two specific receptors. This protein that the scientists have created basically blocks those receptors, so the hiv cant enter. In the studies its blocked all strains of both hiv 1 and hiv 2 and those are the strains that affect humans. Wow. This sounds pretty exciting jon. These are in animal studies, right . Its not in humans. I am very interested in this. We tend to forget about hiv. We think theres some sort of effective treatment that turns into a chronic disease. But remember at the end of 2013 there were 35 Million People around the world with hiv and 1. 5 million deaths. So this is still a big problem. I have to say on a personal note, i lost a friend to a complication of the treatment for hiv last fall. You know these drugs do have side effects, especially long term. And it would be great to have some sort of effective treatment that wouldnt have the long side i affectings. How soon before they can put it to use . They hope to try human trials within a year. The first step so to see if the drug is effective in controlling hiv of people who are already infected an then the next step would be to see if its effective in preventing hiv, almost a vaccine approach. All right. A potential wakeup call for parents this week. Researchers say afternoon naps might interview with a toddlers sleep at night. The study says daytime napping after age 2 lengthens the time it takes for a child to fall asleep. It also shortens the amount of sleep kids get. Mines still going to get one. Finally, next time you go out for sushi, pity the penguin. They cant taste the catch of the day. They lost the ability to taste sweet, bitter, and savory. Researchers blame cold. They believe a freeze of the temperatures created a gene that thats why i lost my taste for coffee. Also the reason is penguins eat it whole. Carter evans has the latesten two rivals who are teaming up to potentially bring the nfl back to the city of angels. Welcome raiders. Welcome, chargers. After two decades without a Football Team, los angeles now finds itself with two nfl suiters. Im praying that its real. On thursday the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders announced that theyre working together to build a 1. 7 1. 7 billion stadium in carson california, that the two teams would share if they both relocate to the los angeles area. In a joint statement the team said we have both been working in our home markets to find a stadium solution for many years. So far unsuccessfully. If we cannot find a permanent solution in our home markets, we have no alternative but to preserve other options to guarantee the economic viability of our franchises. The news was met with dismay by fans of both teams. In san diego which appoint add committee to appoint a new stadium last month, the mayor was upset. They were actively working to go to l. A. With the raiders. Thats not being up front with san diegans, thats not being up front with the fans we do serve an honest and open dialogue. The teams have confirm theyd have purchased last in carson which is located south of los angeles. Rendering of the proposed stadium show a sleek modern structure that would seat 68,000 people with roar for more than 18,000 Parking Spaces along with tailgating. It will be finances entirely through revenues from the football stadium and other entertainment events. The news was met with enthusiasm. But in a city accustomed to being used by nfl teams to get better deals to stay where they will, there was also a healthy dose of skepticism. In the past we got our hopes up and then they were dashed. Reporter this time its different. The own irof the st. The polaroid became a favorite medium for the likes of andy warhol and chuck close. In movies like thelma and louise louise, and even made its way into popular music. But with the rise of digital photography came the fall of lands iconic invention. However, with the new company now producing the film and one famous person showing off her own polaroids the camera lives on. My first came rah, polaroid swinger. He was just 19 when he dropped out of school and said this is an idea worth following up on. I still remember the commercial. More than a camera more than a live its only 19. 95. Its no secret that baseball games have been slowing down for years so Major League Baseball is changing things to speed things up. For some of you, your local news is next. Nicole . Carol, thank youment next update 8 27. Im nicole brewer. See you then. Nlt. Welcome to cbs this Morning Saturday. Im anthony mason. And im vinita nair. Coming up this half hour speeding up the game of baseball. Fans may turn away because the game has gotten too slow. Theyre going to change the rule. The question is will it work. Then america used to be the land of the skyscraper. It was invented here and we had more than anywhere, but its changed and well show you why. The machine that thinks. Its called Artificial Intelligence and its already arrived. Is that a good thing or not. First this half hour the brutal weather that just wont stop. Millions of americans will be affected by the latest storm from the pleftmidwest to the mideast. And the u. S. And the Canadian Coast Guard today are hoping to free a ship stuck in ice in lake erie. Meteorologist ed skur ran of our chicago station wbbm has more. Well, we have winter storm warnings that are up for parts of colorado here where denver could see a foot of snow and from missouri all the way to the east coast there is this storm system that will march across the nation hear and will bring ice and rain and snow and a wintry mix as it makes its way. You can see it right now. Its rain to the south. They had icing in tennessee. Snow to the north as it continues on its way and heres what some people will see. And heres the snow in denver that keeps on going as we go into sunday. Again, they could see a food or more. The good news is our temperatures are starting to moderate today. 48 for salt lake city. 34 in denver 23 in minneapolis, 32 in chicago, and 32 in new york city. Quite an improvement over yesterdays very brutally cold temperatures. Anthony, vinita . That was meteorologist ed curran from our chicago station wbbmtv. A top nascar driver is the first ever to be suspended following accusations of domestic abuse. It has taken kurt busch off the road, preventing him from competing in tomorrows opener daytona 500. It is said that busch likely attacked his girlfriend last september. He denies the accusations and pledges to appeal the suspension. To baseball now where pitchers and catchers started arriving this week for spring training, hopefully a sign that weather is going to change. But if you watched a Major League Game recently and thought it was taking much longer than usual, youre not wrong. Baseball games have been getting slower for years from about 21s 2 hours in 1981 to more than three hours last season, a record. So Major League Baseball hopes to counter that trend with some rule changes. Brandon tierney, cohost of of a radio show is here with more on that. Hey, brandon. How are you going . I have a problem with my kids. We sit down to watch the mets and they say, its boring im leaving. Your problem is youre watching the mets. But also that the game goes on so long. Yeah. You can go back to 1981. Its a problem. Theyve final started to tackle it. And theyre finally responding. You look at the nfl and its 3 1 2 hours. Its fast and theres nonstop action. Really if you boil it down theres only 11 minutes of actual action. If you cut past the huddle guys jogging off the field and reviews, its 11 minutes. What they do more effectively than baseball is the down time they utilize replay they engage the mind keep it quick, keep it fast. Baseball doesnt do that. All right. They do have a problem with millennials in baseball. One of the things they plan on doing is they now say managers must make instant replay requests from the dugout not the field. Theres only a few challenges per game. Its kind of tactical thing because what managers will do, theyll staal, have the equipment guy or somebody in the dugout say, hey, listen skip, they missed it, challenged it or they got it right, lay off. Thats kind of to alert them from the dugout shave off 20 30 seconds. Not tooed by. The other ones will be more. Lets talk about them. You talk about stalling. Hitters are always stepping out of the box. Thank god. This is the one that will change the sport. My Junior College implemented this. Basically theres too much theatrics, guys moving around adjusting their cup. Its putting them to sleep. I think theyre trying to milk tv time. When you get away from that its more about engaging the mind and thats the purpose of this. Now, you look at these other rules, and theres two more. Its just about, you know reaching into that next generation. Im in between. Im a baseball guy. My dad, he doesnt even know how to text, so hes going to watch. But if youre 12 years old and yu stweer on the couch and your phone is blowing up and this is happen, welcome back back in 1952. Youre like clint, nobody cares. Historically some of us do, but the kids dont. Lets talk about the other one. Play will resume promptly once tv broadcasts return from commercial and the other is speeding up the pitching changes. How are they going to do that . Basically another tactical thing. When the managers want to do these things, a lot of them are old, they have repaired hips. They mosey out to the mound. Its stalling. By the time the guy gets to the mound its two minutes later. What this will do is accelerate that. The orr thing is when you come back from commercial, instead of watching them aimlessly do nothing, heres the ball heres the batter lets go. Mental stimulation. It quickens the pace. Theyre rm manipulating the mind. If youre going to commit to something three hours is it a big difference, no but in terms of it well see. I dont know if im going to dont watch the mets. Thank you very muff. Its part of lifes suffering. Speaking of speeding things up thats happening with some of your favorite tv shows, theyre squeeding shows into a shorter amount of time and you can guess why. The actress Courteney Cox who started in the series friends noticed it while watching a rerun of one of her old shows. My voice sounded so different because i think they speed it up a little bit they speed it up a few frames to get another commercial in there. Shes right. With ad growth growing and ratings slipping. Praerms are shortening their shows to have room for more ads. A viewer noticed it while watching seinfeld and posted this on youtube. The same episode. The version on top is sped up so its 15 seconds shorter than the original. Seems reasonable seems reasonable. We can basically take a 30minute i love lucy show and make it 28 minutes without edits out any of the content at all. John pelicano ceoo Duplication Services speeds up some shows for cable and broadcast networks. With a 30second ad selling for more than 17,000 adding two minutes of commercials can add another 68,000 in revenue. If theres a lot of movement stuttering, stepping peoples voices speed up. So there are modifications. He shows how its all worked. Sped up by 7 you barely notice the different and a 22second clip is shortened by a full second. Of course, running more ads may drive more view irs away. Dade hayes is executive editor of broadcasting and cable magazine. Bottom line theress roegs happening in terms of tv advertising and theres a huge intense game on now to make up that shortfall through various news. Technology is certainly one way they can do it. You know they say time speeds up when you get older. Apparently its also true for up next way up next, some really Tall Buildings. Im David Begnaud in Downtown Los Angeles at the site of what will be the tallest sky scrape never the u. S. When its complete. But this is where the bragling rights may end the super Tall Buildings in north america are becoming a thing of the past. More on that when cbs this Morning Saturday returns. This is jim. A man who doesnt stand still. But jim has afib, Atrial Fibrillation an irregular heartbeat not caused by a heart valve problem. That puts jim at a greater risk of stroke. For years, jims medicine tied him to a monthly trip to the clinic to get his blood tested. But now, with onceaday xarelto®, jims on the move. Jims doctor recommended xarelto®. Like warfarin, xarelto® is proven effective to reduce afibrelated stroke risk. But xarelto® is the first and only onceaday prescription blood thinner for patients with afib not caused by a heart valve problem that doesnt require regular blood monitoring. So jims not tied to that monitoring routine. Gps proceed to the designated route. Not today. For patients currently well managed on warfarin, there is limited information on how xarelto® and warfarin compare in reducing the risk of stroke. Xarelto® is just one pill a day taken with the evening meal. Plus, with no known dietary restrictions jim can eat the Healthy Foods he likes. Dont stop taking xarelto® rivaroxaban, unless your doctor tells you to. While taking xarelto®, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. Xarelto® may increase your risk of bleeding if you take certain medicines. Xarelto® can cause serious bleeding and in rare cases, may be fatal. Get help right away if you develop unexpected bleeding, unusual bruising, or tingling. If you have had spinal anesthesia while on xarelto® watch for back pain or any nerve or muscle related signs or symptoms. Do not take xarelto® if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. Tell your doctor before all planned medical or dental procedures. Before starting xarelto®, tell your doctor about any conditions such as kidney, liver, or bleeding problems. Jim changed his routine. Ask your doctor about xarelto®. Onceaday xarelto® means no regular blood monitoring, no known dietary restrictions. For information and savings options, download the xarelto® Patient Center app call 1888xarelto or visit goxarelto. When it comes to construction of the worlds highest buildings, the sky is not the limit in the u. S. For towering ambition you now have to look abroad. David begnaud is joining us from los angeles. Good morning, david. Reporter vinita, good morning. North america used to be the boss when it came to constructing super Tall Buildings but now its lost that bragging right. However, the quest to impress in a very wise way is still inspiring big city skylines like the one right fwhiemd me from l. A. From the air the newest sky skyscraper looks juvenile from its peers but when come pleered the wilshire grand will soar taller from the top of the spire and be 73 stories tall with a sky deck that has a panoramic view. This is not a trendy building. Its not a fashion statement thats gone in a few years. Its something that has to last for a very long time. Reporter chris martin is chief architect and development manager. We call it a next generation office. Its also a next generation hotel. Were trying to design buildings that work for the tenant of today, not the tenant of yesterday. Reporter the next generation is mixed use occupancy, whereas some skyscrapers used to be all office space theyre now hotel, retail, and residential. Its become a moneyback guarantee to ensure that they stack up financially. It used to be the skys the limit. 25 years ago 80 of the tallest buildings were right on this content. Now its plummeteted to just 20 . You might say the high rise craze has relocated. Reporter of all the Tall Buildings, north america only had 20. One World Trade Center in new york city topped the list. The majority were in theve hemisphere. Anthony wood is the executive director. The new predictor, the world east tallest building 30 years ago you would have said three things with certainty. Number one it will be in north america, number two, it will be an Office Building and number three, it will be build out of steal. Now were finding its not true. It will be residential, mixed use and probably concrete construction. Reporter he said the reason its shifted to other areas is due to changes in World Economics and demographics. China has their workers relocated an then there are the bragging rights. Its not a case that america is no longer building Tall Buildings. Its just that agenda for that quest of the title worlds tallest has moved on to cities in country who believe that thats what they need to put their city on the machlt cities are using skyscrapers to brand themselves as a developed city in the same way that Corporate Companies in america use skyscrapers to brand their kormgs 30, 40, 50 years ago. Reporter which brings us back to the wilshire grand. Its logo will be below it. Dont be denied. There will be 900 Luxury Hotel Rooms along with offices, restaurants, and retail shops casts 1. 1 billion to build, its a helluva gamble. I wanted to see us build a building that really made Financial Sense, that hit the market demand. That hit the expectations of the owner. Thats a gutsy thing to make this kind of investment in los angeles and i want them to finish that and say this was really successful. Reporter lets not forget this is going up in an earthquake hot zone. Engineers said wasnt complete it will be seismically chic. The idea being that when the building shakes it lwill minimize the danger. Seismically chic. I like that. David begnaud in los angeles. Thanks, david. Up next will robots take ore the world . I love boy hood. My favored film. Lets look at best actor. At the Golden Globes we had Eddie Redmayne winning in one category. Michael keaton winning in another. What do you see here . Im going to with redmayne. Keaton is older. At the oscars usually in the acting cat kwoir its not the best that is the most. Who gave the most who had the biggest trangs formation, who looked most like the person. This year its Eddie Redmayne playing steven hocking. Michael keaton was funny in birdman but i thought he was playing himself. He looks the most like michael keaton. I think eddie reenman in terms of it its probably leaning toward that. I guessed wromg a month ago. Let me give you one more to fight about. Julian moor. Ill start off with you. No fight. I think it is. Shes been nominated several times. Its definitely her year. Right. Shes been nominated four times. Lifetime achievement. Shes a great actress. Its her year. Is a. J. Simmons slamdunk . . Ee. I would say the same is true for Patricia Arquette for boy hood. I still want her to win. And i think if somebody other than simmons or her win, i will fall down and die. Wow. Well bring your corpse on afterward. Its a contest. Again, between boyhood and birdman. Im going down with the ship. I say richard linklater. 12 years of directing that show. I wonder if this is going to be a year where we do split the director in pictures. It could happen. If it goes to birdman for best picture, which i suspect it will, i think they will go richard linklater. What about the razzies . I dont believe in rewarding bad films. Nicolas cage. Transformers. It puts extinct in extinction transformers. Thank you very much. At 6 00 p. M. Eastern tomorrow be sure to join us on countdown to the Academy Awards. You can.
