A powerful storm lashing parts of the west coast. Heavy rain in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest is causing flash floods, power outages, and big problems for highway and air travel. The storm is expected to continue bringing heavy rain through sunday which may provide a bit of relief for the regions severe drought. Lets get more from carter evans in San Francisco. Good morning carter. Reporter theres a small break in the weather right now but as you said the wind and rain are expected to continue through the weekend. Yesterday this powerful storm caused major problems across the Pacific Northwest. At least seven inches of rain fell in this neighborhood west of seattle yesterday turning roads into rivers and forcing swift water rescue teams to evacuate residents stranded in flooded homes. Everybody here needs to get out and we need to make sure these banks dont fall. Reporter in california thunderstorms and lightning lit up the skies above sacramento. Strong winds sent trees crashing to the ground crushing this car. I ran to see if everyone was okay and it was just my car that was caught in the aftermath. Reporter the storm was a headache for travelers knocking out power at intersections and causing fourhour flight delays in San Francisco. Meteorologists call storm systems like this a Pineapple Express. Its a river of water in the sky funneling huge amounts of moisture from the Hawaiian Islands to the west coast. Despite the damage these storms caused, the rain is welcome in california bringing as much as 70 of the states annual precipitation. This is tremendous. Were thrilled to have it. Reporter in napa valleys wine country, the soaking is good news for the vineyard. Almost droughtlike conditions for several months. This is amazing and exactly the right time for the grapevine. Reporter this is normally the rainy time of year here in San Francisco, but we are in an historic drought. Until yesterday, this particular area had not seen a drop of rain since december. Vinita . Carter evans in San Francisco this morning. Thank you. There was intense weather in northwest new york state. At least five tractortrailers and 30 other vehicles collided friday in a massive pileup on interstate 81. This happened in the midst of a lakeeffect snowstorm. Were joined now by our meteorologist at our chicago station. Good morning. Good morning. Heres the mess out on the west coast that carter was telling you about. This river of moisture thats headed toward the west coast. This Pineapple Express that comes down near hawaii all of the way up into Northern California and into Washington State and oregon as well bringing these rains this morning that continue and though theyve been winding down a little bit, they have really made an impact. Look at these rain totals. 48hour totals as of 4 00 yesterday afternoon. Futurecast shows us even though this is winding down here another area of rain forms and moves onshore as we go into sunday as well. Its a weekend of rain for Northern California and for other areas as well in the Pacific Northwest. Now we look to the northeast where we have a winter storm watch thats up for upstate new york as well as into new england. Another snowstorm. Boston has seen about 4. 5 feet of snow this year. Four feet of that was only in the past two weeks. They get hit again with a snowstorm here that will basically start on sunday and go all of the way through monday. Some areas to the north here could see anywhere from a foot of snow to maybe 16 17 inches of snow. Futurecast shows you how it comes in on sunday and it really doesnt leave until we get late in the evening hours on monday bringing those snow totals to this particular area. How about some positive news . We look around the country at some of the temperatures we have. 80 degrees for phoenix for today. 71 degrees in denver. Some warm 63 degrees in kansas city. Very warm temperatures. Mild temps around much of the country. Anthony . Thank you, ed. There are still more questions than answers about the fate of an American Humanitarian worker this morning. Isis claims Kayla Mueller of prescott, arizona, was killed in a jordanian led air strike in northern syria. U. S. Officials say theres nothing to support that claim. Muellers parents say the news leaves them concerned yet hopeful that kayla is alive. We go to amman for more. Charlie, good morning. Reporter good morning. The Jordanian Foreign minister dismissed the claim as an outright lie. An old and sick trick in his words claiming human shields were killed in air raids. Meanwhile, the air strikes are ongoing. Jordanian fighter jets have bombarded the isis stronghold of raqqa ever since video emerged of the countrys pilot burnt alive by isis militants but the terror group says one of those air strikes leveled this building with the message that says the american hostage Kayla Mueller is buried beneath. The pictures offered no conclusive evidence of her death and isis said not a single fighter was killed. I am in solidarity with the syrian people. Reporter the 26yearold aid worker from prescott arizona, came to help desperate syrians caught up in the conflict until she was taken hostage in 2013. Her family said theyre hopeful shes still alive and asked her isis captors to contact them privately. National security adviser susan rice said its too early to tell. We do not at the present have any evidence to corroborate isils claims. Obviously well keep reviewing the information at hand. Reporter isis has lied before about the fate of its hostages. Jordanians were led to believe their pilot was alive after isis offered a Prisoner Exchange this week only for intelligence analysts to conclude he was likely executed weeks ago. His gruesome killing sparked an unprecedented backlash in jordan where thousands filled the streets chanting death to isis. Jordans queen took part saying the country was united in grief and pride. The arab country says its now going after isis with everything it has and the unproven claim of muellers death will likely do nothing to stop the punishing bombardment. Jordanians are working closely with u. S. Forces and all targets go through a vetting process first and that weapon was thought to be holding weapons and nothing to suggest it was holding hostages. Thank you. For more on this were joined by cbs News Senior National security analyst in our washington bureau. Juan, good morning. Good morning. How credible are these claims right now . I think we should view with skepticism the specifics of what isis is claiming that the female hostage was killed and nobody else in the isis universe was harmed. I think that really is not very credible. What we do have to take seriously is their threats to her life. This is a group that has threatened hostages and lives in the past and has gone through with those threats. Though we pray for her life its very serious they are claiming shes dead regardless of the circumstances. Clearly they are trying to use the fact that they have this american hostage to try to blunt the rage and reaction from jordan. To what degree do you think they are trying to create tension between u. S. And jordan . What effect do you think this will have . Anthony, i think what isis has been trying to do is use their hostages as strategic pawns to try to inject confusion and to affect the Decision Making of the coalition and create tensions and fractures in that coalition. You saw that between tokyo and amman and now they are trying to create tension between the u. S. And jordan. I dont think it will create that tension. U. S. And jordanian interests are aligned and what isis will continue to try to do is to sow confusion and to use the hostages to great propaganda value and advantage. I dont think its really going to work in this case between jordan and the u. S. Juan give us a sense of the politics behind all of this. Republicans have been very vocal saying the president has not been aggressive enough in responding to isis but do you get the sense he has a strategy in not responding to each individual claim . Vinita i think the white house doesnt want to have the president out there at each and every moment. First of all you dont want the president out as the fact witness before you have all of the information and certainly the white house doesnt have information about the proof of life for kayla. In addition they also dont want the president having to whipsaw and react to everything that isis does. This is the american president after all. I agree with the white house in not putting the president out every time isis does something. On the other hand theres a broader question as to whether or not we have a strategy to actually defeat this group and that criticism is beginning to Gain Momentum certainly here in washington. As you mention this came out on the heels of the president rolling out his National Security strategy. What is the biggest challenge to our National Security at this point . Anthony i think its the fact that we have so many challenges at once at a time in history where the u. S. Still remains the global superpower but perhaps doesnt have the means or the will to deal with all of these issues around the world. We certainly cant be the worlds policemen and deal with all of the problems around the world. Yet, we cant ignore them either. Whether its the rise of china, russian aggression cybercrime the threat of isis and terrorism, we have to deal with it all. The challenge is how do we do that and how do we do that within our means . Juan thank you. As we mentioned, president obama is outlining a new National Security blueprint. He focuses on threats of isil also known as isis al qaeda, cyberattacks nuclear weapons, Climate Change and disease. Tax season has barely started and authorities in 19 states are reporting significant increases in fraudulent filing activity. Concerns raised over suspicious filings prompted an online thirdparty Tax Preparation Service to shut down its state Filing Services for 24 hours. Turbo tax is back online ensuring customers that filed that they have nothing to worry about. Jill joins us with more. This is people filing tax returns in someone elses name taking the refund. How could they have fixed this in 24 hours . Were not sure. I think they had a Third Party Security firm come in. They audited and quickly they say they discovered this was not a hack of turbo tax. So really think of turbo tax as the vehicle the fraudsters use to file their returns. They could have filed a paper return. I think what turbo tax needed to determine very quickly is this us when they said it was not . They started to file returns again. The states will be vigilant to detect fraud. Differences from last year that may tag it as a fraudulent return. This is not a new scam. This happens a lot. The irs loses billions every year. 5. 2 billion in 2013. They said however, their Fraud Detection Services that have been beefed up prevented over 20 billion of additional fraud. Again, you sort of say to yourself, what is going on here . Whats happening is they are taking your social. Theyre filing that return. Its coming in and that money is being diverted electronically to an account they set up in your name. Its really Identity Theft taken to the next level. You wouldnt even know until you tried to file your own return that something had already been done. People say maybe i should file early because this is a way to thwart the thieves. Whats different about this is we saw this at the federal level. This has obviously become rampant at the state level and thats why it got flagged. 19 states found errors before turbo tax did. What do you do if youre a victim of this . Turbo tax set up a toll free number. We should also point out that the government has a lot of steps outlined. Identitytheft. Gov. That could go from filing a report, getting a Police Report placing a freeze on your account, all of these things are measures and there are specific steps you must take once you believe your identity has been stolen. The irs wants to hear from you. They want to help you get through this. Jill, thank you so much. Im glad you got the gray memo. Always. The u. S. Jobs market is getting stronger. A better than expected report from the Labor Department on friday shows that employers added more than a quarter of a million jobs last month. Still the nations Unemployment Rate edged up to 5. 7 . Thats because more people are looking for work and are more optimistic about finding a job. Following the transasia plane crash in taiwan this week all 71 of the Airline Pilots who fly propeller jets will have aviation skills retested. Officials say the pilot shut off a running engine when the other planes engine stopped working. The Measles Outbreak continues to spread across the u. S. The centers for Disease Control and prevention is reporting 102 cases. Cbs news learned that there are now at least 155 reported cases in 16 states. The latest is at a daycare facility in illinois. Here with more dr. Holly phillips. Holly, good morning. At a Kindercare Learning Center in illinois five infants were diagnosed with the disease. Two of the cases are confirmed. When will the other parents know what they face with their kids . One things that make measles a tricky disease is it has a long incubation period. It could be 21 days after youre exposed before you develop symptoms. Average is about 14 days. Also, youre most contagious four days before you get the rash and four days after that. You might be spreading the illness without even knowing. The parents might not know for a while. The kids are being monitored. The babies are being monitored at home and theyre told to avoid anyone who hasnt been vaccinated. All of this coverage seems like they linked everything to what happened at disneyland. How do they know it all came from there . Many cases are able to be linked. They do that in two case. The first is called contact tracking which is an exhaustive process where they look at all of the contacts the person who has measles has had in weeks leading up to. Involves hundreds, sometimes thousands of people. Most of this is actually done in a lab. Genetic analysis on viral samples. There are many different types of measles so they try to match each one with the one at disneyland. With a disease this contagious, how do we contain it . It only comes down to vaccination. The disease is so contagious. 90 of people who are unvaccinated in close contact with someone who has it will get it. Although we know vaccination works, in 2000 the disease was considered eliminated and now we see it rise again. If we have done it once we can get rid of it again. Dr. Holly phillips thank you very much. Holly will rejoin us later with more medical news. Reporter pam dixon researches medical data breaches and is concerned the 26 billion investment in Electronic Health records is not secure. The Healthcare System built a digital records system without building the corresponding privacy and security safeguards. Reporter federal law requires medical providers to protect patient data but there have only been 115 Healthcare Provider audits out of 700,000 as a recent survey of Healthcare Professionals found 45 fear their organizations have not properly implemented security measures. And healthcare data breaches continue to rise from 102 in 2011 to 333 last year prompting the fbi to issue two warnings to the healthcare industry. Now for morning rounds joining us our cbs news contributors. First up this week the stress factor. A new survey by the American Psychological association finds that money is the number one contributor to stress. Despite the improving economy, 29 of americans report their financial worries have intensified over the past year. Holly, first of all, who feels this the most . Again, the vast majority of americans do feel stress around finances. The top groups really are parents with children under the age of 18. Young adults who may now be grappling with the job market for the first time and people in lower income brackets. I have to say, i thought for sure it would be men who stress out more. Its actually not. Women are considerably more likely to report high levels of stress. That might be because women are just more likely to communicate it. I think regardless of who is im not picking up on that. Regardless of who is the primary bread winner in the family, women are more often in a position to be buying clothes for the children or to be purchasing groceries so they might experience it on even more personal and acute level. What are some of the symptoms of stress and how do you handle it . Stress is a great masquerader. It can manifest in a lot of ways. In physical ways you can have chest pain fatigue and you can have stomach upset. In terms of emotional symptoms of stress you can feel anxiety, sadness, depression and then theres behavioral symptoms which are changes in your eating habits, changes in sleep, sex drive, drinking more or trying drugs or cigarettes. It can have a lot of different symptoms. In terms of how to deal with it there are some people who recommend meditation relaxation exercises, yoga social support is a huge one. Having loved ones friends that you can sort of have there to buffer the stress is helpful. Finding ways to regain control in a situation because when you feel out of control, that contributes to stress level. And then counseling when necessary. Sounds like trickle down is health because one in five americans skipped doctor appointments because they were fearful of money. Thats the worst thing you can do. We know that stress can contribute to chronic diseases like cancer heart disease, as asthma asthma, psychiatric disease. There was a book written called why zebras dont get ulcers. Were evolved to be smart enough to make ourselves sick. In the wild you are chased by a lion and you either get eaten and killed or you live and then the stress response is turned off. In our lives, we turn it on all the time. We raise our Blood Pressure and heart rate and lowering our immune system and reproduction and growth and all of this contributes to chronic disease. The British Parliament is getting worldwide headlines after voting to allow the creation of babies from the dna of three people. The controversial procedure is intended to cut the risk of genetic disorders but critics say it crosses a fundamental scientific boundary and could lead to socalled designer babies. It raised eyebrows on both sides of the atlantic earlier this week. Mark phillips has more on that. Yesterday may well be remembered as the day that genetic future of our species began. Reporter jamie is a writer on generaltics policies and his words may sound overstated but not to poppys family. Shes almost four and suffers from a disease. She cant walk and can barely speak. Her cells dont produce the energy they need for her to develop. Her sister does not suffer from the disease but may carry the genetic defect. The procedure would help mothers whose eggs have a healthy nucleus but are surrounded by defective batteries that power cells. That nucleus is transferred to a donor egg and embryo produced with that hybrid egg would contain dna from the mother and father plus a tiny amount from the egg donor. Its this threeparent child that poses the ethical dilemma. Not to poppys family. It means the girls lillie certainly and poppy if she lives to reproductive age, could have children that dont have the disease. It will pass down the female line so to give them a choice when they come to the age of thinking about children and an option of having a healthy child. Reporter science won the moral argument in britain but in the u. S. , the discussion gets political. Its very difficult to have these conversations in the United States because we have the big divide between the right to choice and the socalled right to life that we very very quickly get caught up in National Politics that are in some ways bigger than the issue. Reporter for cbs this morning saturday, im Mark Phillips london. That little girl in the story had a defect. Are there other diseases caused by a defect . Its really representative of why it has a wide spectrum of severity. Some are mild and go almost undetected and some are severe and fatal before adulthood. Those include heart, kidney liver failure and a number of neurologic diseases as well. The idea of being able to repair parts of the cell while its still in the embryonic stage is really a huge leaps and bounds ahead. One of the things we do have to point out is that this changes only the Energy Source of the cell. It doesnt affect our nucleus, which has our 23 chromosomes, 20,000 genes all of the things that make us us. This is about protecting ourselves from a medical disorder. Very interesting debate. Next up this morning, running faster and farther isnt necessarily better. A new study in the journal of the american journal of cardiology say that light joggers may outlive more intense runners. This is surprising to a lot of people. What did the study find . The study compared joggers of all different types. Light, moderate and faster. Light joggers lowered mortality. In terms of what seemed to be the best prescription for jogging, a pace of 12 minutes per mile or five miles per hour. People think of that as slow. For 1. 24 hours per week. Not a lot. Finally, the power of music. Learning how to play an instrument before the age of 14 and sticking with it for at least ten years could help older people preserve cognitive skills like the ability to follow what others are saying. This comes from a new canadian study published in the journal of neuroscience. Older adults who had musical training in their youth were 25 faster in identifying speech sounds than their nonmusician peers. This is really interesting. If this isnt an argument to keep the arts keep music in schools, you know, i dont know a better one. Its also not just cognitive ability. A number of studies have found that for children with psychological issues or who have psychiatric issues music is incredibly powerful at helping them to deal with it. Even more so than psychotherapy and medication. Its something we all really should do. Thank you both so much. Up next is americas long hot love affair with cars finally cooling off . Americans are driving less than they did a decade ago before the recession. We dont own as many cars as we used to. In just five years from 2006 to 2011, the number of vehicles owned per driver fell marginally. Lets learn more from tim, a reporter for an online daily magazine. Whats happening here . Why are people driveing less . A big change is urbanization. More americans live in cities than used to. Twothirds of Young Americans live in cities and they just dont need cars as much as they used to. Its a big reason for it. What fascinated me about research is change in culture amongst younger people. I remember getting my license. The opportunity to get it was a big deal and now this age group is less interested. Its not the right of passage it used to be. In 1983 80 of 18yearold americans had a drivers license. In 2010, it was down to 60 . I think its going to be going down Going Forward. Nowadays when people want to get away from their parents, they dont go to the mall or the drivein, they go to social media and theres less technological cachet that comes with having the last car. They want the last phone. Is this something the automakers are worried about . Theyll sell 17 million cars in the u. S. This year. Its not the end of the world. They are concerned about it. If you look at ford or any big american car makers, they are integrating more technology and do partnerships with company that will be the bleeding edge of how cars are used in the u. S. Going forward. Talk about the role of smartphones. Of all of the things smartphones have done, i never would have thought these two things could be connected. One is just you can communicate. You dont need to make as many trips to see people. Its also like uber. Car service where if you want a car, you can summon one with your phone and be there in two minutes and drive away. You can track when the bus is coming. Thats a big part of it. It makes mass transit more individual and more assessable to people. Do you see this trend accelerating . Absolutely. There are people who are less bearish about the end of demand in cars who think maybe after the recession were going to see people getting richer. Millennials will leave their parents households and have kids and get married and not want to live in cities anymore and move out to the suburbs and maybe more cars there. Automakers think about emerging markets now looking at china and india and places where density of car ownership is lower than in the u. S. But its the same story there. Theres a lot of congestion in cities and they look at mass transit. Thank you for being with us this morning. Ahead of the Grammy Awards a star studded tribute to bob dylan. Each year for their concert, they choose one artist to be honoree. This year one of musics greatest tentime grammy winner. I played them back when nobody was doing it. Singing nothing but these folk songs and they gave me the code for everything thats fair game that everything belongs to everyone. John mellencamp Willie Nelson and Bruce Springsteen were just some of the performers who took part in the tribute. Presenting the award to dylan last night was president jimmy carter. Im proud to be here tonight for music cares and honored to have these artists singing my songs. Im just crossing over jordan too. Lets hope we meet again sometime and we will. Its like Hank Williams says. The good lord willing and the creek dont rise. This is really pretty extraordinary. We havent seen bob dylan talk in public in quite a long time. He gives interviews occasionally. Rarely on camera. This was a rambling half hour speech. He thanked peter, paul and mary johnny cash, he went through everybody he thought he owed a debt to. It was pretty cool. Coming up the controversy over a new novel from harper lee. Is the author of to kill a mockingbird capable of making a decision to publish the book. A passenger took this video aboard the flight. 160 people were onboard. Nobody was hurt. Lets get more on the weather and a look ahead from our chicago station wbbmtv. The Pineapple Express that brings moisture from Northern California to oregon to washington and some incredible rainfall totals in the 48hour period ending yesterday afternoon and weve only been adding to that. The fate of an American Humanitarian worker remains a mystery this morning after isis claims she was killed by a Jordanian Air strike. U. S. Officials say there is nothing to support that claim but the parents of Kayla Mueller of prescott arizona, are speaking out and say the news has them concerned but leaves them hopeful that kayla is alive. Jordanian officials have dismissed the claim that their fighter jets killed american hostage Kayla Mueller saying its nothing but a publicity stunt meant to drive a wedge between jordan and its coalition partners. Isis posted pictures of what they said was proof of her killing showing a collapsed building with a message that she was buried beneath it in an air strike that took place yesterday. Isis militants offered no further evidence of her killing and they said that none of their own fighters were killed in that air strike. The 26yearold aid workers family said they are still hopeful that shes alive and they have requested that the captors contact them directly. Theres been a media blackout since her disappearance in aleppo in 2013. Jordan has intensified its air strikes over the past few days. Payback in response to the gruesome execution of its pilot and they have expanded that air offensive to include iraq as well as syria. Anthony and vinita . Thank you. To kill a mockingbird has stood the test of time as one of the undisputed Literary Masterpieces but after it was released in 1960 author harper lee retreated from the spotlight and never published again. That may be about to change. Lees publisher said this week it will release a recently rediscovered novel go set a watchman which was completed in the mid 1950s but some who know the 88yearold lee are protesting. They insist she would never authorize publication of a book she kept hidden for almost 60 years and say shes being taken advantage of. So will this wind up in court . Lets ask cbs news legal analyst. Good morning. Good morning. How do you determine whether somebody is being taken advantage of in a situation like this . One of the things we have to look at is who are the people representing harper lee . You have an agent who went to Harper Collins and said in essence have i got a deal for you. And this agent is really well respected in the business. So we almost put him to the side. Then we look at the lawyer. You have to understand this family. Carter is a younger woman who worked for harper lees sister. Harper lees sister alice, really took care of harper lee throughout her life and carter the lawyer got as i would say, the Good Housekeeping seal of approval from the sisters. Its carter who is Going Forward with this case. If youre a nosey neighbor or if youre a really good thinking friend of harper lees, either side of this. This was a woman who would never want this publicity. She would never have wanted an unedited novel to go forward. So we dont like this. Is there a remedy for them . I think that the interesting question about this is there may not be because theyre not heirs to a fortune of harper lees to go to the courthouse and get a remedy. In terms of her medical status, shes blind, deaf, wheelchair bound and living in an assisted center. We so badly would have wanted another book. Its number one on amazon right now in presales. Who can look after her if theres no heir . We dont know if there are a will or other heirs. We know that carter acted on her behalf. She has power of attorney to go forward, sign contracts, make deals. One thing thats interesting that came out this week is a good friend and historian, a man named wayne flynn saw her on monday and said shes very keen. They didnt discuss this new book. They certainly did discuss that all of our favorites to kill a mockingbird is up toward the top of the amazon list and it excited her. The problem is the quote. What the lawyer said harper lee said is im alive and kicking and happy as hell. Other people say thats not really what harper lee would have said at this state of being. If they really really have a problem, they can go to Adult Protective Services and try to start an investigation and then you know what happens . We all lose. We all want this novel to be published. To kill a mockingbird sells a mill up next a controversial new way to discipline your kid at the barber shop. Youre watching cbs this morning saturday. I guess i never really gave much thought to the acidity in any foods. Never thought about the coffee i was drinking having acids. It never dawned on me that it could hurt your teeth. My dentist has told me your enamel is wearing away, and that sounded really scary to me and i was like well can you fix it can you paint it back on and he explained that it was not something that grows back, its kind of a onetime shot and you have to care for it. He told me to use pronamel. Its gonna help protect the enamel in your teeth. It allows me to continue to drink my coffee and to eat healthier and it was a real easy switch to make. A barber shop in suburban atlanta is offering parents a new approach to discipline kids that have misbehaved. Its a hair raising tactic for the youngsters and its getting mixed reviews from grownups. Reporter at a1 cuts the newest cut is the least popular look. No kid wants that haircut. No would you . Reporter no. Frederick russell named the new do. The grown up kid special. I took it upon myself to make you look grownup. It shows you how to behave. I mean i would agree with it. At the same time i wouldnt want my hair to be cut off. Reporter its called a special because its meant to punish problem kids by making them look like old men. Its also free. Im more than willing to do it for free because i have three sons and i understand what this is all about and trying to raise kids with all these new rules and regulations and you have to tiptoe through raising your child without being scrutinized. Reporter frederick got the idea after his own son started failing classes. I could not afford for him to get a whooping and then call the police on me and then i be in trouble. Reporter unable to change his behavior frederick decided to alter his sons appearance. It was a move that at first hurt his heart, he says. When all else fails, what do you do . You cant whoop them. You take all their gadgets away from them. I mean when all of that is done and it still doesnt work how do you reach these kids . Reporter frederick insists the horrible haircut worked for his son so when a mother stopped in asking for help dealing with her troubled son, frederick knew what to do with the moms permission. Thats how he looked when he first came in. This is the transition to the after cut. His mother said that the school asked for her to fix it because it was getting too much attention at the school. Reporter he changed the boys hair back but he also saw a change in the boy. The son actually thanked me. He said that he doesnt want that cut again. Hes going to do what it takes so he doesnt have to get it. Reporter fredericks hair humiliation went viral after he posted pictures on social media. Its been bananas. Reporter hes gotten calls from all over the world even one floating the idea of a reality show. As you might imagine, not all attention mr. Frederick has been getting is positive. He even had one threatening phone call. Some say his effort to discipline has the potential to backfire. In general Mental Health professionals dont like the idea of shame. They dont like strategies that humiliate children. I think were much more about kind of helping children do the right thing in a positive way. I think its brilliant. Reporter a navy veteran and father of four endorses the cut as a way of whooping boys into shape minus the whipping. If its not abuse, what is it . Its a lesson. When youre being punished at home whether you are punishing them at home behind closed doors but you bring this out and let your friends and say, hey, you know, look at the haircut. What did you do to get that haircut . I didnt study. Talking back to a teacher. Always getting detention. I strongly feel that you know that will teach the lesson. Reporter youre not going to stop . No why . If i see that its causing more of a problem than its helping, i would stop. But as long as im seeing positive outcomes from this why would you stop . I love the face on the kids after the haircut. Its an interesting way. You hear from the barber and you understand his mentality of saying there are few things you can do. I think every parent has been desperate at one moment in time. Up next music, music, music. The stars will be out to shine and sing at tomorrow nights 57th annual gramry rymy awards. Hello kitty how are you today little kitty hello kitty our attempts at singing could have made that. The Grammy Awards are set for tomorrow night hosted once again by l. L. Cool j. Our own Michelle Miller got a chance to talk to him about being the new face of the grammys and about the big show itself. Heres a sample. Lets talk about the grammy grammies. Fourth time hosting. Does it ever get old . It never gets old. This is an opportunity for me to be close to music and close to some of the greatest musicians that the world has to offer. As a lover of music and as a musician myself what could be better than that . Do you ever ask yourself why me . Why did they pick me . Why do they keep asking me . You know thats a funny question. Im very grateful. Very very grateful. My answer to the other side of that is why not me . 30 years ago the grammys werent even looking at rap seriously. To come full circle and have you on stage hosting. Yeah. I love it. Is that a reflection how the grammys has changed or how society has changed . Its a combination of both. Society has changed in a lot of ways for the better. Obviously theres a lot of work that still needs to be done. I think the grammys are definitely reflecting that. I think it is commendable for them to have an africanamerican hosting the biggest music show in the world. You can see all of michelles interview with l. L. Cool j. Tomorrow on cbs. Now were joined by joe in l. A. With a preview of the grammys. Good morning, joe. Good morning. A lot of talk about sam smith up for six awards including the big four best song best album, best record, best new artist. Is he going to sweep this thing . Sweep, im not so sure. He has tough competition. Those four major categories a lot of strong nominations in there. I like him to win two awards in the major categories and maybe three overall. I think hes good for two bare minimum. After since i heard someone reference him as adeles baby brother, its more enduring. Who do you think will take album of the year . Its tough competition. It comes down to beyonce and sam smith. I talked with sam smith a few months ago and asked him who would win album of the year and he said beyonce of course. If anybody else wins they should give the award to her. So maybe well have to hold him to that. I do think its going to go to beyonce. What about record of the year . Record of the year an enormously strong category. A lot of these major categories really reflecting whats happening right now on the billboard charts on the pop charts. I think this comes down to taylor swift. Dont count out fancy. Ferrell williams is up against himself for album of the year. How do you think hell do . It will be an interesting question. Ferrell did well last year. His big hit happy was up last year and its been around since then. Its nominated for a live version in the pop categories. Hes up for album of the year and i think that he might be edged out by beyonce there. Beyonce is up for six awards. Are you expecting a big night for her . Im expecting a big night for her but one of the funny things is that shes up for six awards. She, ferrell, sam smith, most nominated awards but they say beyonce was snubbed because her song drunken love didnt get brought up for major awards. Well see her on stage. Cool how she did that surprise release. People forget about what buzz there was for that. U2 have one nomination. Its a little bit of a surprise. You know that album was released for free with apple and then u2 rushed out a final copy so that it would be eligible on sale somewhere. You could pay for it and it would be eligible for grammy nominations. Im sure they were hoping for more attention from the grammys than one nomination in the rock categories. Theyve been a grammy favorite for so long. It shows that grammys right now are concentrating on whats really happening. What people are responding to. Whats on the pop charts. Joe, real quickly, best alternative album. Whats your pick . Tight competition there. I like jack white in this category. Strong nominations here but i like jack whites album a lot. Joe, thanks. Enjoy the grammys. One more reminder you can see all of the stars and hear the great music at the grammys here on cbs beginning tomorrow night at 8 00 eastern, 7 00 central and our Online Streaming Service is doing countdown to the Grammy Awards with action live from the red carpet from 6 00 to 8 00 eastern at cbsnews. Com. Coming up scanning the smithsonian. Cant make it to washington, d. C. To see National Treasures like the spirit of st. Louis. An ambitious effort is under way to 3d scan iconic items from americas history to bring the smithsonian home to you. That story coming up on cbs this morning saturday. From the cbs Broadcast Center in philadelphia. This is cbs3 Eyewitness News. Good morning everyone, im nicole brewer. Fire fight remembers called back to the scene of two alarm blaze hours after first put under control. It all happened at auto body shop on the 1600 block in philadelphias frankford section, this is the scene from chopper three last night the fire reached its intensity, firefighters returned this morning when parts of the building began burning again. The hot spots were quickly put out. Now, lets get a check on the forecast, carol good morning. Good morning we will be warming up today. Our temperatures reaching finally into the 40s and close to 50 degrees tomorrow. Weve got clouds out there though, as you can see and we also have some clouds in the shore areas. So we can expect to be finding some of that, also, storm scan three showing the clouds, and there is a weather system to the north. It will be moving here, looks like it will be rain on monday for us, but could end as that wintery mix in our area. Even though there is a winter storm watch in effect for the poconos, for sunday evening through monday night now weve got temperature of 29 degrees right now we are on our way this afternoon into the low to mid 40s, tomorrow, close to 50, and then monday with the rain, 38 degrees, wintery mix to ends it. Nick snow. Carol, next update at 8 57. Im nicole brewer. See you then. A train created whiteout conditions as it plowed through huge snow drifts following three days of blizzards in less than a week. The locomotive sent snow flying as it went past the train crossing. Some snow covered the camera lens. Can you imagine seeing that snow come through the window. Fun, fun, fun. We begin this half hour with a look at how the Smithsonian Institution is adapting to the 21st century. The smithsonian is going 3d. If you wanted to see 138 million items in the collection you had to go to washington, d. C. But not anymore. Now its launched an ambitious new project and mark albert is here to tell you about it. Good morning, mark. Good morning. This is really an incredibly ambitious project and its taking the smithsonian into the 21st century. In the bright atrium of the national air and space museum in washington, two men are using light to stop time. Perfect. Adam a former painter, and vince, a former sculptor carved out a niche as the Smithsonian Institutions laser cowboys scanning pieces of American History like the spirit of st. Louis in 3d before its too late. Charles lindbergh flew this plane across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927. The first person to make the trip nonstop alone. While his record will hold up the aircrafts original fabric skin will not. So the smithsonian lowered the plane for the first time in a generation to capture it for all time. Here we have a preview of the spirit of st. Louis in the background. Reporter a single 20minute 180degree scan records 5 to 10 million measurements. So youre blending the 3d image along with color 2d photographs. That allows us to create life like digital version of this object. Were going to use this data to bring this airplane to the world. Get up close and personal with this airplane in a way theyve never been able to do before. The program has a goal of scanning 16 million of the institutions artifacts, objects and specimens. Thats just 11 of the entire smithsonian collection. Only 2 of which is on physical display. The smithsonian already created a 3d image of the 1903 wright flier. The worlds first powered airplane now taking off in a new medium. The newly scanned 3d objects like this originally revolution revolutionary gun boat can be brought back to life with a 3d printer. You can print your own smithsonian collection item and put it on your coffee table and discuss what it means to you. Does it teach you Something Different to hold an item in your hands. This is a 3d print of a lincoln life mask from 1865 where you see a very aged lincoln. I think the experience of being able to hold that and actually touch these furrows on his face im sitting there and it sends chills down my spine. An aged linkon edd lincoln on the right can be compared from before the war. They recently scanned barack obama at the white house. Are you hoping people learn from what they are putting online . Are you hoping to teach them something . What is your goal . To provide people with the raw material to tell their own stories and also to feed scientists the data they need in order to make new discoveries and address vital questions such as why are bee colonies collapsing in the United States . If we zoom into this bumble bee, you can see all of the fibers and hairs on this bumble bees body. Megan is leading the effort to transcribe the items into a searchable online data base. 4,500 volunteers worldwide discovering and documenting history long since forgotten. It feels like were going through the smithsonian basement in a way. Were getting a chance to go through the locked boxes of treasure down there. The bee specimens and other items never seen publicly speed through the first scanning Assembly Line of its kind at a u. S. Museum. We used to do a few dozen of these sheets a day. Now we can do 3,000 to 4,000 a day. Resolution is sharp. If history is a collection of treasures or moments, the smithsonian hopes the light of a 3d scanner can do what our memories cannot preserve the past long into the future. Have you ever wondered what james would think about your efforts to digitize the collection that was founded in his name in 1846 . I think he would absolutely have loved it. He understood that when information gets shared science gets better. The smithsonian is spending 2 million a year on this but thinks it may cost up to 80 million in all. It hopes to raise most of that from private donations. This is fascinating. How long will it take them to do this . Theyre only doing a portion of the collection for now. If they tried to do every exhibit in the collection and they scanned one item every minute for every day, it would take 260 years. What do laser cowboys do besides the smithsonian . Do they have other projects . It turns out they occasionally make house calls. There was an ancient whale graveyard they discovered and so they flew down because construction wasnt going to stop. 3d scanned this entire graveyard and now scientists will have it forever to study. Fascinating stuff. Th up next the dish. He hasnt hit 30 yet but he wowed critics with his restaurant with a taste of spain here in manhattan. I like that tall pour. Here are two guys at a grand restaurant. They were perplexed and invited us back to the kitchen to talk to the chef and owner. We cooked there for two summers at interns starting at 14. I guess thats the legal working age. I think its still the case. I guess it took. You have been to spain several times. When did have you that moment where you thought this is the region for me and why i want to be cooking . Growing up tookcooking, spain was at the forefront of modern cooking. I traveled there and it was unaffordable to eat at the grand restaurants but we do have some in new york but not enough and not just food but the environment we were trying to create emulating what its like to be milling about in a bar in spain.
