It sounded like an attack. All of the sudden, people were screaming in the streets and they were running. A terrorist attack in nice claims more than 80 lives. From baa still day. A father and a son. All the babies screaming, shouting, all of this. It was horrendous. This is a war against these terrorist groups, radical jihadist groups. We need to be smart about how we wage it. Hillary clinton and obama want to allow more people into our country, what are they doing . Donald trump postponed announcing his choice for running mate because of the attack in france. He selected indiana governor mike pence as his running mate. Baltimore Police Officers who fatally shot a man while gashting say he was firing at them with an assault rifle. Nearly 200,000 customers are without power. Power is out now. All that i ask for your help to unite all the races. Ootd act of shocking violence one week after the Deadly Police ambush in dallas. This time france was hit by a new large scale terror attack. A truck slammed into a crowd gathered to watch the bastille day. The attack turned the streets into a scene of chaos. Cbs news confirmed the man behind the wheel was a 31yearold french citizen born in tunisia, 84 people were killed, dozens of others were hurt. Police shot and killed the attacker. American father and son on vacation with their family are among the dead. Sean and 11yearold Brodie Copeland are from the austin, texas, area. We are in the nice with the attack thats shaken the world, good morning. Reporter good morning, yes, well once again, france in shock and mourning after what should have been a joyous occasion. There were huge crowds lined up. You could see behind me to watch the fireworks along the beach e on frances e kwi lent of the fourth of july. B bastille day when a huge truck slammed into the crowd. Witnesses say aiming to hit as many people as he could. Police repeatedly tried to shoot him, but he managed to accelerate away and hit dozens more. People fled in panic. Witnesses say some even jumped into the sea. American tourist kayla reppin was on the promenade when she ran. It seemed like everyone was run, running away from something, but, you know, we were just turning down alleys and kind of looking for somewhere that might be safe. Reporter for many, there was nowhere safe. The truck charged on for over a mile until police finally shot and killed the driver. Over 80 people, more than ten of them children, were killed. Hes 31, a dual french citizen named Mohamed Lahouaiej bouhlel. They found a handgun, assault rifle, and fake hand grenades in his truck and determining if he acted alone. Isislinked staged two waves of attacks in france in 2015, which killed a 147 people. Back then, president Francios Hollande declared that france was at war. After yesterdays attack he said, france weeps, but france is strong and will always be stronger than the fanatics that strike it. Francios hollande has just arrived here in nice this morning with the interior minister and their very first duty will be to go and visit the scores of wounded here in local hospitals, gayle. Terrible site, thank you very much, Alyssa Palmer reporting from nice. No one has claimed responsibility for this horrible attack. Law enforcement source says, only one real weapon was found with the attacker. The front page of the french newspaper says this le figueroa, horror again, path of destruction stretched for more than a mile along the scenic seaside. We have details of some of the victims who dialled in the attack. She is also in nice and she will be joining us in just a few moments. It is shocking that you wake up once again as you said, charlie, once again theres another terror attack. You feel nowhere is safe. Nowhere is safe. Long stretch, indeed. Fred townsend joins us. She has experience in the white house. When you look at this the, we dont know some of the facts, no ones claimed credit. We dont know whether there was anybody else involved. Beyond that, this method of using a truck to run down human beings on a day of celebration. Awful, look charlie, i think the thing that makes it more terrifying to viewers and most americans. We can talk about in the wake of an orlando, what should, what should u. S. Gun policy be, but youre not going to take cars away. Its the demonalty of the thing used to inflict the harm that i think is so shaking to people. Now, al qaeda and isis have both called for the use of vehicles as they say, mow down the enemy. In some respects, you could have expected this sooner. The fact this he used a truck is what allowed him to sort of, in just an awful way, tragedyic way, go for such a long period of time. But you look at the individual now thats been identified, not known to french intelligence, no need to think but known to local police as a petty criminal. But nothing to suggest that this was his next act, right, that he would be and thats part of the troubling thing about isis. Traditionally the old al qaeda core was a high yark call group. They got approval for plans. You know, you put forward an attack plan and it got approved. This is not that kind of a group. Isis now has proven themselves to be this decentral ieds movement where individuals are selfradicalized and selfinitiating these kinds of attacks which makes them difficult. High holiday season, there are a lot of tourists there at this event. How do you possibly protect against a soft target from someone who clearly doesnt mind dying . He doesnt need an escape plan because he figures, hes not coming out of this alive and doesnt care. Thats right. In the wake of bataclan and charlie hebdo. If youre going to walk into a public place, the prescreening area of an airport or a cafe, a restaurant, its very difficult. We live in a free and open society. It puts a lot of pressure on the Intelligence Community to try and identify these people before they act because if you wait until that moment of the attack, its much more difficult. France again, can you say its a failure of french intelligence . I dont think you can. This is not somebody based on what were being told now. There was no need to think he was known to french intelligence. His petty criminal record should not have tripped anybody up, but i think, you know, right now Law Enforcement officials, intelligence officials are looking, what do we know about him . His context, his email, are there sbur vanls that we could have known . His travel . Were hearing now that he did not ever travel to the United States, but those are the sorts of pieces and with two american victims, the fbi will now have jurisdiction to open up a counterterrorism investigation here. He was not on any nofly list as far as we know at this hour. The response. Hillary clinton has called for a quote intelligence surge and more sharing of data with other countries. Trump is calling for tighter restrictions on immigrants coming to the u. S. Do you see either of those as preventing an attack like this . No. Look, everything you can do to mitigate the next attack, we ought to do. We certainly need better screening of those coming into the country. We know that. I dont think preventing all muslims which donald trump has called for at various points is the right answer. Afterall, some of our greatest counterterrorism comes from muslim allies. Certainly there is greater pressure on the Intelligence Community and so greater resources, both to the Intelligence Community and Law Enforcement is going to be required, if were going to track everybody whose been identified in this country alone. As a potential threat. One thing we have to do is figure out what it is that is causing these people to become radicalized. Charlie, thats the key to defeating isis. You have to attack the ideology. Theres something about this ideology and the way that they sort of spouse it thats attracting the disaffected, some with mental illness, obviously, we have to fight the ideology, and thats been the biggest challenge to the u. S. Government during the bush administration, obama administration, its always confounded of how best to do that. Thank you, fran. Fran townsend. Were learning more about some of the 84 victims killed. We are also in nice, good morning. Reporter good morning. Last nights horror reached across families and continents. Were beginning to learn details of some of those who lost their lives, including one family who traveled here from the u. S. 51yearold Sean Copeland from lake bay, texas was no nice with his family and 11yearold son, brodie. Their family confirmed today they both lost their lives in last nights attack on the bastille day celebrations. We are heartbroken and in shock over the last of Brodie Copeland, an amazing son and brother who lit up our lives and Sean Copeland, a wonderful husband and father. They are so loved. The Little League team that brodie played for posted this photo of him enjoying the beach in nice during the trip. The copelands had joined a party of thousands on the beach last night, which turned into a nightmare when an attacker drove his truck through the crowd. In the horror of last nights events, an american shot this video on her phone of the crowds fleeing the scene. Visibly upset, grace told cbs what she saw. Sirens are going off everywhere. People are screaming bloody mary. Running, i mean, just hauling butt, just women with their children on their arms like this, just running. And you just kind of cant help but run with them. Even though you have no idea what youre running from. Your adrenaline kicks in, youre just running away from something. Reporter in contrast with the mood minutes earlier. Everyone was just so happy, out of nowhere, all the sudden theres this attack and people are like injured and people are crying, and now we have to get to safety when literally just ten minutes before we were all on the beach enjoying fireworks. Reporter morrow who was with her aunt and uncle lost them during the chaos, but was reunited with them. So many families this morning will not be as fortunate. Police here say there are at least 50 children still in the hospital. Many of them in critical condition. Local media reports two children died overnight during surgery that had been hoped to save their lives. Nora. Awful news. Elaine cobb in nice, thank you so much. President obama ordered his administration to provide any aid that france requests. Margaret brennan is at the white house, margaret, good morning. Reporter good morning. Well president obama will soon call the french president to personally express his condolences and reiterate that offer to assist with the investigation. President obama was informed shortly after the killing happened and he very quickly called this a horrific terrorist attack. In a statement, he also said that the thoughts and prayers of americans are with the families and other loved ones of those killed and we wish a full recovery for the many wounded. We stand in solidarity and partnership with france, our oldest ally as they respond to and recover from this attack. Now earlier today in moscow, secretary of state john kerry expressed his frustration that these attacks are happening on a week lit basis around the world. And he blamed the war in syria as the single biggest incubator for terrorism right now. And so while u. S. Authorities say it is still too soon to pin this attack on isis, it has added new urgency to a meeting near washington planned for next week with World Leaders focussing on trying to defeat them not just on the battlefield, but here at home. Gayle. Thank you, margaret. The president ial candidates also offered support to france in a statement Hillary Clinton said this, every american stands in strong solidarity with the people of france. And we say with one voice, we will not be intimidated. On twitter donald trump says my prayers and condolences to the victims and families in the terrible tragedy in nice, france. We are with you in every way. Trump also tweeted he has postponed this mornings formal announcement of his Vice President ial pick. How trump and clinton are being tested as their campaigns enter a new phase, good morning. Good morning, as has been discussed, Hillary Clinton called for a surge of intelligence gathering and donald trump said if he were president , he would be extremely tough on screening all immigrants. He also postponed the announcement of mike pence as i had running mate citing the attack. Trump was mildly irked that the pence news leaked. All of this of course a jarring prelude to the Republican National convention. This is war if you look at it, this is war, coming from all different parts. Reporter hours after the carnage in nice, donald trump and Hillary Clinton agreed america and her allies are at war. This is a war against these terrorist groups. The radical jihadist groups, its a different kind of war. We need to be smart about how we wage it. Reporter arguing trouble is brewing at home, trump cautioned against new refugee flows from syria. Hillary clinton and obama to want allow more people into our country. What are they doing . Reporter to underscore the seriousness of the nice attacks, trump postponed his News Conference to add, indiana governor mike pence to the ticket. I just felt in light of this horrible situation, this horrible attack, it would be inappropriate despite trumps public denials. But i havent made a final, final decision. Reporter the governor flew from indiana to new jersey thursday, ducking quickly into a black suv for the ride to manhattan for meetings with Trump Campaign staff. I am supporting senator ted cruz because he is principled conservative. Reporter trump wasnt pences first choice during the primaries, but hit praised the political instincts and ability to motivate new voters. Im grateful. Im grateful for his voice in the national debate. Reporter the new running mate says sometimes the case will have to reconcile conflicting positions. In december for example, pence called trumps proposed temporary ban on muslims entering the u. S. Offensive and unconstitutional. In 2014 he urged the swift adoption of transpacific partnership, thats a deal trump has aggressively proposed. He will announce later this morning a new time for his announcement and all signs point to tomorrow here in new york, gayle. What do you think sealed the deal for him . For trump and pence . Yeah, that combo, yeah. Reassuring delegates at the convention, pence is not only a social conservative, but an economic conservative, and it speaks to if not a political sense of maturity on trumps part, an awareness that politics does matter. Working with his party and bringing someone that is recognized by them if not the nation is helpful. And that he should not always go on his gut instincts or personality preferences which is where gingrich and christie were. Where do you think this leaves Chris Christie . Someone who will have a big role and say in it, but little bummed out. Thanks. Thank you, major. Cbs news will bring you complete multiplatform coverage of next weeks Republican Convention. Police shot and killed the driver. Elizabeth palmer is with us, good morning. Reporter good morning. Well, nice is really frances ocean playground. Its a lovely city on the shores of the mediterranean with beautiful beaches, a real vacation magnet. And this boulevard behind me, very famous promenade along the sea was closed off to traffic in the evening. There was a huge crowd here. They were eating, drinking, enjoying themselves, waiting for the fireworks to begin. Those fireworks to Mark Bastille day. You mentioned it was to commemorate the beginning of the french revolution. And it is as big a deal and joyful a dooz ale july 4th is in the United States. So these people would have had absolutely no inkling that catastrophe was about to strike. Its an especially cruel blow because france was just heaving a sigh of relief. It had hosted huge crowds, millions of people for the big european soccer championship, which lasted a month. They mounted a massive security effort, and it went off almost without a hitch. So france was beginning to believe perhaps the worst was over, well clearly not. Joins us now from france, good morning, mr. Terrell, this must have been very frightening for you. Can you set the scene and tell us what you were doing and what you saw. You knew there was a problem. Reporter yes, yes, i was at home. My wife and my son were on the promenade watching the fireworks and at 11 00 when the fireworks ended, i just started hearing screams and i looked out the window and i saw people running. And i was about to get out to the go and see, try and get my wife, and she came up as i was coming out. And it turned out, she crossed the road literally five seconds before the truck came fast behind her and then there was just the panic in the crowd. A man she was telling me shell remember this man shouting, theyre shooting, theyre shooting, its an attack. And she ran home to be safe. And once she got home, i just told her to stay there and i grabbed the camera and went to the promenade and this terrible, terrible scene. There was bodies, just dismantled and there was really horrible, horrible, its a horrible scene. I mean, ive seen ive been to some places, and this was a terrible thing to see in my home country. Antonin, how long did it last . I was out there from 11 00 just past 11 00, thats when it started, and until i mean the truck was quick, but once that happened, until like 1 00 in the morning, even i think at 1 00 there was still bodies laying on the streets. It was like for three hours, im sure. It felt like a lifetime, you know, with all the emotions, i cant tell you how long. Definitely hours. And you saw children as well as men and women on the ground . Yes, yes, saw a lot of there was a lot of the restaurants all put their table cloth over the bodies to hide, you know, obviously are the terrible stuff. And so it was hard to see exactly if there were children or women, but yes, there was definitely women and men and just smaller shapes under the sheets. Tell us about the bastille day celebration. Next update at 8 25, coming up on cbs this morning, former cia Deputy Director tell us how this friday, july 15, 2016. More world news ahead including the latest on the investigation into the truck massacre in france. Well talk to mike morel about how terrorists are shifting tactics and targets, but the first here is todays eye opener at 8 00. Once again, france in shock and mourning after what should have been a very joyous occasion. Its method of using a truck to run down human beings in their celebration. Its the commonality of the thing used to inflict the harm that i think is so shaking to people. Were beginning to learn details of some of those who lost their lives. Including one family who traveled here from the u. S. President obama was informed shortly after the killing happened and he quickly called this a horrific terrorist attack. President called for a surge of intelligence gathering and trump said if he were president , he would be extremely tough on screening all immigrants. Can you set the scene and tell us what you were doing and what you saw . There was bodies dismantled. There was really horrible, horrible, it was a horrible scene. It was attack against the unity of the nation. The only responsible response that can be given is to remain true to the spirit of the area. To remain united, together, around everyone. Im charlie rose with gayle king and nora odonnell. French investigators want to know if the man behind the nice truck rampage had help. He slammed into a crowd of tourists and families celebrating bastille day. More than 80 people are dead, including more than ten children. The truck crushed dozens of people. No group has claimed responsibility. American father and son on vacation with their family are among the dead today. Sean, an 11yearold Brodie Copeland are from the austin, texas, area. Elizabeth palmer is in nice, elizabeth, good morning. Reporter good morning. Well, were slowly learning a few more facts about the driver of the truck. His name was Mohamed Bouhlel and he was 31 years old. According to the tv, which has good Police Contacts in france, he was facing divorce. His marriage was on the rocks. He was probably going to lose custody of his three small children. And he had also, on top of it, recently lost his job as a truck driver. Nice is known as a recruiting center for isis. Its sent many men up to syria and iraq, but theres absolutely no indication at this stage that he belonged to isis or was even sympathizing. The president Francios Hollande arrives here a while ago, his job today will be to visit all the wounded in hospital and try and reensure a profoundly shocked country. Meanwhile were standing on the boulevard where the attack happened. Hearing from some of the witnesses. This is what eric had to tell us. He is an american who was here on vacation with his wife. We heard the pop, pop, pop sounds. And my wife who is actually deaf recognize the sounds as gunfire. And we immediately got up, we were in the middle of paying our bill. We got up and ran for shelter. In the restaurant. And as we were running toward the shelter, which is underneath the promenade, people are throwing themselves off the roadway on to the restaurant, the beach. And one guy reporter hurdling themselves over the railing. One guy threw himself over and hit my way of. She has a bruised arm. Shes okay. A lot of people injured far worse than she is. Reporter and eric tells me that he is still feeling very shaken today. And very vulnerable as is everybody in this country. Nora. Elizabeth palmer in nice, thank you so much. Former cia Deputy Director michael morel is a cbs news Senior Security contributor. He is in washington, michael, good morning. Good morning. A truck rampage that mowed down, killed 80 people, wounded 100 more, what do you make of this attack . So we dont know for sure what motivated this guy, nora, but i think its safe to assume that he was an isis thesympathi, he was inspired by isis. If thats the case, this would make this the Third Largest terrorist attack in europe since 9 11, and it would make it the fourth isisinspired attack directed attack in the last four weeks. So its hard to overstate the significance of what happened last night. Michael. Go ahead. Michael, why is france such a target . Charlie hebdo, bataclan theater, elizabeth told us in the last hour that the french authorities were breathing a sigh of relief because they had just gotten through a very big soccer tournament without incident, and now we have an attack on bastille day. So france is one of the countries in europe that has had a very difficult time, gayle of bringing muslims into their society. They live in their own neighborhoods, they live in their own cultures. In some cases, they live in ghettos. So the french have not done a very good job of bringing folks into their society and thats one of the reasons france is in the state its in. Michael, how do we get our hands around the bigger issue which is why these people being radicalized, any kind of profile for who is likely to be radicalized and what kind of message makes them radicalized . So charlie, its a great question. I think focussing on the individuals makes it very hard. Because it is very difficult to identify indicators and patterns in particular people, i do think we need as a government and the the bigger problems. Rms around which is why large in your opinions of people are being radicalized. And that he has to do with a feeling in fundamentalist islam that the modern world is a threat to their religion and violence is an acceptable answer. The failure of governess in many middle eastern that dont give people hope from the future and struggle between iraq and golf states that stoke sectarianism. Thats what we need to get our arms around here to solve this problem in the long run. How do we do that . I think that is going to take leadership on the part of the United States to sit down with the leaders and muslim countries and have, have a very frank conversation about those issues. And what we expect from them. And hold them to that. Back in march on this very program, you said that terrorism is winning. It seems to give yes dense to that statement you told us three months ago. Gayle, i think things are going to get worse before they get better. As we put more pressure on them in iraq and syria, they are going to have a greater incentive to conduct attacks to inspire attacks because they want to show theyre still relevant. And as we are more successful in iraq and syria, all of those thousands and thousands of fighters who went there are going to start coming home. And so youre going to see more hay tacks by people who people went there and trained and military experience, come back home, conduct very serious attacks. Do you have concerns about security here at home in the u. S. And also at the conventions ahead . Specifically the Republican Convention next week . Absolutely. You know, i think its just a matter of time before we see attacks of this size here in the United States. I have no doubt about that. Were going to have to adjust to their tactics, right . The use of a vehicle as a weapon is something that terrorists have talked about for a long time. Dhs, fbi put out a report in 2010 warning of this. Theyre starting to use it. Thats very difficult to defend against. So were going to have to look at is their tactics and respond. Were going to have to start putting concrete barriers between the flow of vehicles and groups of people. Michael morel, thank you. Youre welcome. Soon after the attack president obama reaffirmed americans quote, solidarity and partnership with france our oldest ally. He said that after the attack, the u. S. Ufred any assistance that french officials may need to investigate this attack and bring those officials responsible to justice. The candidates offered their support for france and said they are determined to end terrorism. Hillary clinton said this cowardly attack strengthens our commitment to alliance and to defeating terrorism around the world. Donald trump said another horrific attack, many dead and injured, when will we learn . It is only getting worse. Trump postponed his Vice President ial announcement after news of the attack broke. He was expected to introduce indiana governor mike pence today as his running mate. And cbs news will bring you complete, multiplatform coverage of next weeks Republican Convention. You just walk in the street, even though youre told not walk in the street, and you stand nose to nose and you dont say anything. Nothing. What are they saying to you . Nothing, there was silence. There was a lot of nonverbal communication. Sometimes silence speaks volumes. I feel like what did you want your silence to say . Im human. Im a woman. Im a mom. Im a nurse. I could be your nurse. I could be taking care of you. You know, im here. We all matter. We dont have to beg to matter. We do matter. When you see the photo, what do you see . Does she look scared . No, because i wasnt. There is no, there was no fear in my body, which is kind of, when you see these officers, and you see their gear and i like i see his gun, you know, they like impen traable compared to me, with no armor in a sun dress, but there was no fear. No fear. The Washington Post says you captured a critical moment. Their comparing it to past photos. The man staring down the tanks. Civil rights demonstrations in birmingham, alabama, theyre now putting your photograph, the photograph of you rather in that category. What does that mean to you . It means that god has chosen to put me in a position to make a difference. Make a change. It is more than me. It is more than myself. So here i am, i have a responsibility to do something. What brought you there . All of the injustices before. I felt like i was just a bystander. And i had you know, you have a choice as a human being to do something or to not do something. And i chose to go to work the other time. During the other protests. I chose to pay those bills. To put the food in the refrej rater. Once the opportunity presented itself, it was just like, yeah, definitely. You saw the video of alton sterling. I saw the video. It literally rendered me numb. I couldnt cry. I couldnt scream. I couldnt break anything. I was just numb. So you see that video, and then what did you think when you saw mr. Castiles video which which happened the next day. I felt something has to be done. I told him to get his hand. Something has to be done. What did you tell your son . Your son is six years old. Hes six. What did you tell him . Whats his name . Justin. What did you tell justin . If you had gotten arrested. What did you tell him . I told him that i went to jail. He said why, i thought only bad people go to jail. Only bad people go to jail. And i didnt have an answer for him. I told him that sometimes thats not the case. And that was the best answer that i could give to my son. Because hes thinking, youre my mom and youre not a bad person right. Why are you in jail . Right. Youve never been arrested before. Do you see yourself as an activist . Um, before this, not really. I wouldnt really call myself an activist. I have a passion for my people. I love my people. So and i never really considered myself to be in the definition of, you know, brave, you know, but sometimes, you know, jobs are given to you that youre not really, you didnt apply for. Yeah, she said she certainly didnt apply for the job. People keep saying if she wasnt wearing that dress, it might not have gotten the attention. Its the juxtaposition of the Police Officers and her standing there so quietly. So what more can you tell us about her in terms of your feelings aegt about there. Shes a nurse, shes 27 years old. Shes never been arrested, never even thought about doing Something Like this before. And like many who are supporting the black lives movement, shes not painting all Police Officers with a brush, but i wanted them to look me in the eye and me look at them and see, we are all people. She wasnt scared. No, she wasnt scared. I was surprised too. She was not scared at all. She felt it was something she had to do. Well, it has brought a lot of conversation in that picture. Camden county Authorities Say a may fell through roof of a High School Early this morning, chopper three over Sterling High School in south warwick road in somerdale within the half hour. Now, it is not clear what the man was doing on the High School Roof and the extent of his injuries isnt known either. We will keep you to up date as we learn more. Right now we switch things up, check on eyewitness weather with meteorologist, katie fehlinger. Another hot one out there, brooke, yet again, silting in excessive heat warning up and down i59, and all of the counties, once again, see full sunshine out there, today, though, you dont want to have to worry about any pop up showers or strong thunderstorms, and it really looks like it will be a dry day in the sunshine, but hot again. And still quite steamy. So, again, zest i have heat warnings, as well as an air quality alert, posted for at least the garden state, and it is an air quality that is unhealthy for sensitive groups of children, the elderly, and if you have any respiratory illness takes it extra easy out there today. I will say today is fantastic pool or beach day. Just take it easy, take frequent breaks if you must, be out in the sunshine, and certainly, latter on the sun block, right . Now, there will be little easing up that takes place this weekend, i would not call this a cooldown necessarily. But we lose some of the humidity, thermometer eases up at least little bit. And either saturday or sunday could trigger just quick shower or storm, but generally dry in the sun, meisha. Katie, thank you so much. That sound good. Tim tebow will not speak at next weeks Republican Convention, will not speak. Several sources reported that the former nfl quarterback was scheduled to speak, but he said yesterday in an instagram video, he was surprised to hear the news. Just got back from the philippines and i wake up this morning to find out that im speaking at the Republican National convention. Its amazing how fast rumors fly. And thats exactly what it is. A rumor. Wow. The Trump Campaign confirmed it invited him to talk, but his goal is to make the biggest difference possible in the world, and for now, that does not include politics. Dont you think thats amazing . Your name is listed, they have a speaking slot and no one said anything to you about doing it. Well, my republican sources told me that the Convention Staff and the Trump Campaign are not getting along, that the list was put out without even being confirmed. That there is a lot of chaos and things that are were going to see Something Interesting next week. Well find out. They have until monday to work it out, nora. Indeed. Zblnchtsd we have been showing you how the terror attack in france is impacting the race for the white house. Cbs news and face the nation moderator, John Dickerson is in cleveland this. Morning where the Republican Convention is only three days away. John, good morning. Good morning, nora. So is it going to be chaos or a perfect coming out party for donald trump and his running mate . Reporter well based on the campaign so far, its unlikely to be like anything weve seen before. If its a smooth convention, that would be a huge win for donald trump because the question coming in here based on the conversations ive had with delegates here is, you know, can he do the compulsory exercises of a president ial campaign. . Hes thrown out the rulebook so far, can he put forward a consistent message and unify republicans, many of whom who have come here with questions about the nominee. Why did he choose mike pence in the end, don . Reporter well i think because in the end he went more sort of with his head than his heart. Normally sometimes you pick a Vice President to be an attack dog. The nominee is the attack dog. And so mike pence smooths out the Trump Campaign. Hes solid pick, hes strong with social conservatives, hes not you have washington, but haze washington experience. If he picked somebody like Newt Gingrich which is much more unpredictable, there would have been clashes likely as the nominee went, as the campaign went forward. And so, pence is a kind of calmer pick. And based on the conversations here with delegates, i talked with one who said its a stabilizing pick. And pence is lowers that ability. And whats the factor about mike pence because the latest poll from cbs and New York Times. 86 of theers dont know who he is or what he does or much about him. Vice president s rarely matter. You have to go back to Lyndon Johnson to have a really Vice President who really, really partied. What it tells you is something about the nominee. When george bush picked dick cheney, it showed that he cared about governing. Same with obama picking biden. What does this say about donald trump . It says that republicans here that ive talked to, recognizes his Campaign Needs stability. Its not all going to be done kind of unpredictability. And mike pence sends that signal, but it sends a signal for a day or so. The question is, does this stick for the next several months and thats still an open question with donald trump . John, we have a kind of terrorist that we had, what is perceived to be a terrorist attack in france and also what we had in orlando. Does that have a political output that you can suggest or can we discover whether it favors one party or the other . Well, we certainly seep both candidates rushing to try to give people, people look for some sense of com. Whether a candidate has a fooefpoint plan or not, looking for them to frame the moment, explain why things are going to get better. The problem with the campaign weve got right now in the structure of it, is that both donald trump and Hillary Clinton in an age of anxiety are part of their message is, you should be even more anxious if my opponent becomes president. So Hillary Clinton is saying donald trump is threatening. Donald trump is saying Hillary Clinton doesnt understand the nature of the threat. Which means as people are looking to their candidates for some kind of grasp and understanding of a complicated world, whether its terrorism overseas or violence in america, the structure of the campaign right now is responding to them with more messages of anxiety. And so, thats what has this campaign in a very jittery place. Events are already jittery enough the way its being discussed in a campaign is more so. John dickerson in cleveland, thaurng. And sunday on face the nation, guests including reince priebus, thats sunday right here on cbs. Late show host Stephen Colbert watched more than 20 president ial candidates go down one by one in what he calls the hungry for power game. This morning hes in studio 57 to look ahead to his live episodes. As donald trump and Hillary Clinton become the when youre the parent of a disabled child, you realize that the world can be a harsh place. But you also realize it can be a really loving, wonderful place. When i saw donald trump mock somebody who was disabled, i was appalled. You gotta see this guy. Ahh, i dont know what i said, ahh, i dont remember that reporter suffers from a chronic condition that impairs movement of his arms. Were very happy to welcome Stephen Colbert back to the table this morning, not only the host of the late show with Stephen Colbert, here on cbs, hes also an executive producer and a writer. Imagine that. Wow. Youre wanted. No wonder im so tired. You have so many talents. Latest topics include the pokemon go sensation, bachelorette and the race of the white house. Stephen is getting ready to broadcast two weeks of leif shows during the political conventions which start on monday, welcome, sir, great to see you. Thanks charlie, very excited to have you on the show tonight actually. Oh yeah. Its a big booking for me. Its like a vacation. Its the three of you can talk. I just have to go, and go. Ill time you. We have a good time. Ill sit behind the desk with a drink. We fill two hours every morning. How do you do it live every day . I have two weeks of live shows arent you looking forward to it . I need advice. Advice, whats that . Two smart, beautiful women. What are you guys doing if the next two weeks right now . Because im just alone at the desk. Were booked with this guy. Thats right, youre doing the morning and the evening. And the evening. He stars are rotating for the next two weeks. Give me what youre taking. Im sponsored by ad roll and red bull for the next two weeks. Tube the decision to do it live. I think this is a really great idea. Well, we wanted to do it live because one of our favorite things, theyve been keeping it topical as possible, one of the favorite things is that if something we can make a joke about happened at 5 00 and were recording at 0u 30, turn it quakely and be the first people, and thats a great joy. We dont want somebody else to pick the chicken as i like to say. Now given what we know about this Republican Convention, do you think youll have to write that many jokes . Oh god. I think well have to i think well have to see obviously what happens, but the most exciting thing about at least the republican week for me is that you are real news people, this is the first time in my adult lifetime that i dont know whats going to happen over the week of the convention. Because theyre so competitor graphed most of the time. We have to decide how much to play into what people want you to report on. Its normally just like a press release, and you kind of know whats going to happen, but this time tebow. Tim tebow was announced to be one of the speakers on the big night, on the trump night. He knows nothing about it. Thats right. Id like to announce, tim tebow will be my guest thursday night. Tim, good morning. If you just found out, surprise. But youve also got elizabeth warren, i think thats what night is she on . Elizabeth warren is going to come on to talk about the speech that trump gives on thursday night. So the night that he accepts the nomination, shell be on our show. Do you think shell like it . Oh, i think shell be passionate. I think shell be passionate about it. Again, i think itll be a vacation for me. And elizabeth warren, go. And youre it. So theres word and rumor that jon stewart may be joining you. I heard those rumors, the thing is, when we release jon into the wild, we put a tracking collar on him. And he get pings every so often. But we dont know whether maybe hes rubbed it off against a tree, we never know at this point. Never know at this point, but i have hope, i have hope. What . He knows the way to cleveland. Of course, he spends most of his vacations at the hall of fame. You know john well. You had to release Bernie Sanders finally from your hungry for power game. I love that you do. Thanks very much. That was difficult to let him go . Bernie . No. It was exciting to finally do it. We had written that draft many times because i dont know about you, but it really looked like he might be dropping out or have a reason to drop out for a few months before he did drop out. Dont you think when it finally happens, Hillary Clinton said thanks a lot bernie, for nothing. I think his wife probably. How hard to run for president of the United States . And ive done it twice. This is the season in which youre not a fake person. Yeah. Youre a real person. Im Stephen Colbert, but im not a fake news man. Colbert in 2012 Stephen Colbert, its all the difference in the world. It is all the difference in the world. Is it different that youre not doing the Comedy Central character . Yeah, it is. I mean, it doesnt mean he wont appear, show up. Goodness. Hes very needy.
