Evidence shows Lab Researchers failed to follow the proper procedure. Doctors are treating dozens of people at risk. Good morning. Reporter good morning. The cdc continues investigating the breakdown in safety protocol here. As many as 75 scientists may have been exposed to the potentially deadly bacteria. Those scientists are now being monitored and given medication. The cdc discovered the exposure last fright when this anthrax bacterial plates used in the lab were being gathered for disposal and live bacteria was detected on them. They meaimmediately contacted t workers. They were given antibiotics and a vaccine. Theyll be closely monitored. Dr. William schaffner is an Infectious Disease scientist. He says the risk does not pose a risk to the general public. This is a low level risk. Its a confined exposure. Its being well addressed. Reporter exposure to anthrax often leads to flu or coldlike symptoms and can be fatal if left untreated. The samples were being transferred to three lower security labs not equipped to andle live anthrax. However, the lab used a procedure that did not adequa adequately activate the samples. Scientists in the lower labs who thought the samples were safe were left unprotected. Disciplinary action will be taken as necessary. The cdc has responded promptly, transparently, aggressively, and is doig all the right things. Now the cdc says as many as seven researchers may have come into direct contact with anthrax.
