Almost like the forest is breathing. You might have guessed these arent your garden variety fireflies, this species gathers in swarms and flashes all at once. We have them back home in ken bit they dont have their act together. Synchronous fireflies, or as thee fans call them, to figure out this strange phenomenon we turned to the parks chief entomologist, ranger becky nicols. All start at the same time and flash somewhat randomly then go off. It will be completely dark. Then all start again. No where in the western hemisphere is there a bigger population of sink row news fireflies than right here at the campground. We think its primarily because its prime habitat for them. This is where the fireflies are in the third drawer down is where most ever them are. The scientific name for the synchronous firefly is photinus carolinus, one of 19 species here in the Great Smoky Mountains. We have a lot of specimens of this particular species. This is the one that everybody comes to see. The the firefly or lightning bug isnt a fly or a bug its actually a beetle. Thats the plan turn. That much light comes out of something that small. It really is. Almost zero heat produced. Theyre way more efficient than a light bulb. Thats right. We coolish something from them. Is it talking in a way . In a way, yeah. Sweet talking, to be more precise, because the fireflys flashing is all about getting a date. Its a mating display. Then respond with a glow of their own. Most of the people that many might not go in to the woods in the daytime. They are coming to sit in the woods in the dark. All very fleeting, sadly adult fireflies only live matter of week. The tentacles they have whats called a nematocyst like a microscopic harpoon under pressure, a hair trigger fires it off and injects in to whatever it hits. Adult jelly, male or female is called medusa but it starts life as an egg. Which watches into one of these hairy looking larvae which in turn attaches to something and then becomes a microscopic polyp. Polyps can mullet fly when conditions are right they start throwing off lots of babies, like these little moon jellies. The top part is the bell, underneath is the mouth, this is really fine filaments where they would sting. These are comb jellies. These, upside down jellies. There are hundreds of varieties in all shapes and sizes. Lions mane jellies can grow to over 80 feet long. Then there are nomuras jellis, as big as refrigerators at times. Especially inning they devastated the local fishing industry and even capsized fishing boat. All those nomuras jellies are exhibit a for a vocal group of researchers delivering a scary message. They are taking over the ocean. Amplified by media coverage, the jellies are turning the seas in to a giant gelatinous soup, the result of overfishing, pollution, climate change, even radiation. They list dozens of incidents like this one in 2011 where tons of jellyfish have clogged water intakes and shut down major power plants. A catyclism or not. True or false .
