This morning a strong winter storm is targeting the south as the northeast prepares for more snow and shivers and dangerous recordbreaking temperatures. There are winter storm warnings stretching from oklahoma to North Carolina. In the northeast subzero air temperatures have triggered windchill warnings. This fountain froze solid in new york where the windchill is expected to 20 degrees below zero today and another round of snow is expected tomorrow. In North Carolina tonights expect snow and ice was preceded by winds that snapped trees. At least one fell on top of a home but no one injured. And the salt trucks are out up to 9 inches of snow forecast for tennessee, arkansas and missouri. Up to 4 inches of snow is possible in georgia. But nothing compares to massachusetts where theres so much snow folks dont know what to do. In boston another foot fell yesterday on top of the six feet thats fallen over the last month. The latest come with bonechilling air astle meteorologist eric fisher reports more is on the way. The big dig under way on sunday. Thats the way we look into monday. Wind ville values as low as 35 below zero. Dangerous conditions to be outside. A lot of cold across the midwest and northeast to start the week. Also tracking a midsouth storm. Winter storm warnings out. Significant winter event. Heavy snowfall moving through monday. This whole area tracking its way eastward by the evening. Rough commutes across kentucky into West Virginia heading over toward d. C. And this will bring snow to dmoshg and boston tuesday before it heads off toward the east. Biggest totals across kentucky could see over a half foot. On the southern end across northern alabama, mississippi and georgia over towards charlotte will include ice really difficult travel conditions and could bring up to a half foot of additional snow into the boston area. In terms of the cold it is here to stay. Sharply colder temperatures central and eastern u. S. Running 20 to 40 degrees below average. Im meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. The weather is making for dangerous and difficult travel. So far this morning, 341 flights have been canceled. Over 3,000 since saturday. The boston Rapid Transit system will be reopened on a limited schedule today. It was shut down yesterday as they were pummeled with another storm that made february the snowiest month in the citys history. Paul burton from our station in boston says theres so much snow they cant keep up. Reporter the digout continues and work crews know they have a lot of work to clean up all the snow before the next storm hits. The coast guard was able to rescue a father and son from australia who got caught in yesterdays storm after setting sail from rhode island friday their 43foot sailboat lost power 140 miles off nantucket. Put it in the down in the water and approached the vessel. One individual jumped into the water. Rescue swimmer took him away from the vessel and picked up the survivor with the basket. The coast guard crew battled 60 Maureen Maher winds and 25foot seas for 40 minutes. The two sailors were checked for hypothermia but no one injured. This morning Egyptian Air Force jets bombed isis targets in libya. They follow the release of a video that appears to show the beheading of 21 egyptians. Egypt started these air strikes in libya at dawn. Retaliation for the murders of these egyptian christians that the group had been holding hostage for weeks. Libbys air force has announced it has started launching air strikes. All of this as congress has only begun to debate stepped up u. S. Military force against isis. Egyptian warplanes bombed Islamic State militants targeting weapons storage depots retaliation after the release of another gruesome video sunday. In it men dressed in black marched 21 Coptic Christians along a beach near tripoli and addresses the camera in english before they are beheaded simultaneously. Following the release egypts president convened an emergency meeting of his commanders where they planned the retaliation. This is a group at war and these videos are a window into that reality. Congress is currently debating president obamas request for it to authorize the use of military force against isis. Something arizona senator john mccain supports but doesnt think will ultimately destroy them.
