Pelley the fire one witness calls the beast will not be tamed by man. Only rain can save Fort Mcmurray, alberta now. Wildfire has exploded through parched forests, forcing this week the largest Mass Evacuation in north america in decades. At least 90,000 people are on the run living in emergency shelters, and most have no idea what has happened to their homes. At least 1600 houses are gone. One man who drove his family through the flames said simply, i thought we were dead. Youll understand what he means when you see ben tracy who is near the fire line tonight. Ben. Reporter scott, this is as close as you can get to Fort Mcmurray tonight, and you can see why. There is fire burning just everywhere you look. This is dense, dry vegetation back here, and firefighters tell us theres really little they can do except let it burn itself out. The flames once again lit up the night, appearing to dance on the shores of a nearby lake. The blaze has been driven by wicked winds pushing and pulling the heat in all directions. Late last night, this fire proved just how unpredictable it can be, heading south and north, devouring everything in its path, crossing this road, and just burning up this forest. Today, the fire continued to grow. Huge plumes of smoke and flames shooting up into the sky. Timelapse video shows how intense this fire can get in just one hour. Chad morrison is albertas wildfire manager. This fire is a fueldriven fire, which is the result of very dry, Drought Conditions over a long period of time. We have not seen rain in this area for the last two months. It feels surreal. It feels like were in a movie right now, a nightmare we cant wake up from. Reporter leah arnold and Brad Williams were in Fort Mcmurray during the firestorm tuesday. They fled to the north, only to find themselves stranded. Thousands of evacuee evacuees aw being flown to safety. Today a convoy of 500 vehicles brought some evacuees south, passing through the town most of them call home. Much of it is simply burned to the ground. Does it feel like home . Not today. No. Not not driving through that today, no. I mean, its eerie. Im not even sure where people are going to start, really. I mean, most of the town is gone. Reporter if theres any piece of good news tonight, its that the wind has shifted direction and firefighters say it is now blowing the flames away from the towns that were threatened. But they are in this for the long haul, scott. They tell us really the only thing that is going to end this wildfire is rain, and there isnt any in the forecast. Pelley bras for us tonight. Ben, thank you very much. One person after another was gunned down by a killer roaming montgomery county, maryland, outside washington, d. C. Six people were shot, three killed. The first fatality was yesterday at a high school. Today, there were two more, one at a shopping mall, another at a supermarket. Police have arrested a suspect. Its a federal Law Enforcement officer. Kris van cleave is on the story. Reporter police have been following Eulalio Tordil for about an hour as he walked through this strip mall, even stopping to have lunch. When the 62yearold federal Police Officer went to his car, they moved in. Montgomery county police chief tom manger says tordil had threatened a shootout. We certainly did not want to have any other plood shed here and so the plawnt cloacts sphrs waited until it was safe to take him into custody and thats what they did. Reporter todays shootings began around noon when police say tordil approached a woman outside a mall in bethesda, maryland. They exchanged words and he shot her in the shoulder. He then shot two men who came to her assistance. One man died. The other remains in critical condition. About a half hour later, another woman was shot and killed in her car outside a Grocery Store about eight miles away. Police quickly lynched the getaway car in todays shootings with a shooting yesterday 15 miles away help tordil is said to have killed his estranged wife and shot another person. He was placed on administrative leave in march of this year. His service gun and badge were confiscated. That same month, Court Records show he was ordered to stay away from his wife. She made allegations that he abused their children. So far, police have not been able to say what if any connection todays victims have with their alleged shooter. Scott, an eerie coincidence, the same restaurant where tordil was seen today, the d. C. Snipers were seen during their shooting spree in 2002. Pelley kris van cleave for us. Kris, thank you. Today, the zika virus fouled the plans of major league baseball. The league canceled a series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins in port preako. The games will now be played in miami. Today, the Presumptive Republican nominee won a few endorsements from top republicans, and he lost quite a few. Donald trump agreed to sit down with the House Speaker, paul ryan, who has said that he is not ready to jump on the trump bandwagon. Major garrett is following this. Paul ryan, i dont know what happened. Reporter donald trump told supporters in omaha, nebraska, today, he was caught off guard when House Speaker paul ryan said he could not endorse the presumptive nominee. He was congratulating me on doing so well. I figure routinely hed be behind it, and he the other day just in a big surprise. Reporter republican chairman Reince Priebus said trump called him after ryans snub. I said, listen, let me just, you know my view is just relax and be gracious, and ill talk to paul, and well try to work on this. Reporter priebus has now brokered a meeting between trump and ryan thursday in washington. Ryan tweeted today, i look forward to the discussion. But more Establishment Republicans continued to say they will not support trump in november. In a facebook post, jeb bush wrote he would not vote for trump because he has not displayed a respect for the constitution. And he is not a consistent conservative. Bush joins fellow failed g. O. P. Candidate lindsey graham, a frequent critic of trumps. I just cant go where donald trump would take us. I dont think hes qualified to be commander in chief. I will support every other republican in the country. Our house and Senate Majority are at risk and i will work to maintain them. Reporter trump said the two were sore losers and noted the endorsement today of former Vice President dick cheney and another former g. O. P. Rival rick perry. And i lik rick perry and hea good man. Reporter graham, bush, and another challenger Rick Santorum signed a pledge promising to summit the nominee, no matter who it is. It wasnt so long ago that g. O. P. Anxiety around that pledge revolved around trumps fidelity to it, not anyone elses. Pelley today, a political crisis has much of baghdad in lockdown. Thousands of Security Forces were deployed to prevent a repeat of last week when protesters broke into the socalled green zone which houses Iraqi Government offices, foreign embassies, and the United States embassy. Charlie dagata is in baghdad tonight. Charlie. Reporter we so those heavily armed Security Forces everywhere today, scott, new blast walls that sprung up overnight, rows of armored personnel carriers, even tanks, and we were forbidden from filming any of it. And heres why. Last weekend, thousands of protesters stormed the green zone and overran parliament accusing the government of corruption. It looked like an uprising. They were acting largely on the orders of muqtada alsadr, the powerful shiite cleric whose malicious raging street battles against u. S. Soldiers at the height of the insurgency in 2004. Today, the massive security cordon meant his supporters were confined to sadr city, the sprawling shia neighborhood on the edge of baghdad. It hasnt changed much in the year since the war has ended. We met said al batad, who told us why he took part in the green zones protest. They dont care about us, he said. Look at the poor, the hungry. Theres no electricity, no drinkable water and no jobs. How shameful is that . We asked muqtada alsadrs deputy, hakim al zamani, about sadrs strategy. Is there a danger of destabilizing this government at a time when this country is at war with isis . For 13 years all weve gotten are bombings, corruption, very little security, a weak economy and isis, he said. Weve run out of time. We cannot wait any longer. And they say they wont wait any longer, scott. Theyll be back at the green zone if their demands for government reforms are not met. And u. S. Military Officials Say 25 more marines have been sent to the u. S. Embassy inside the green zone as a precaution. Pelley Charlie Dagata in baghdad for us, charlie, thank you. After 16 years, two marine corps widows saw their husbands vindicated today. The pentagon now says the two pilots were unfairly blamed for the fatal crash of a revolutionary aircraft. A review of the investigation finds no fault with the plane but it says the pilots were not adequately trained and werent warned about potentially dangerous flight maneuvers. David martin reports from the pentagon. Reporter if ever there was a bittersweet moment, this is it. After 16 years of heartbreak and anger, two marine widows and their families met with the deputy secretary of defense to hear their late husbands cleared of blame for a deadly crash. Brooke gruber was eight months old when it happened and has grown up with the shadow hanging over her father. What would your friends ask you . Did your father cause the crash since he was the pilot . And i would have to say, of course, not. Reporter in april of 2000, a v22 marine tiltrotor osprey crashed during a night landing in arizona. The horrific fireball was recorded by a camera on a second v22. Crash crash crash reporter the two pilots Lieutenant Colonel john brow and major said al batad were killed instantly, along with 17 other marines. Theyre dead, arent they . Yes. Reporter announcing the findings of the accident investigation, this marine corps press release stated the fatal factor was brow and grubers decision to complete that nights mission by attempting a landing that required them to descend too rapidly. For connie gruber, that made the loz of her husband all the more painful. It felt like he had died once in the arizona desert, and it felt like he died again in the press. Reporter that statement, the fatal factor,. Upon. Right. Reporter why do you think the the marines added that . Many people have had the opinion that it was to basically protect the aircraft over the pilots. Reporter blame the pilot, not the aircraft. Reporter right. Reporter at the time the v22 with its rel losingary Tiltrotor Technology was a controversial aircraft and in danger of being canceled. I felt betrayed for my husband. Reporter because it had been put on him. Yes. Reporter with the help of North Carolina congressman walter jones, she set out to reverse the verdict. Finally, deputy defense, is the bob work, himself a former marine, reviewed the evidence and issued this letter. I disagree with the characterization that the pilots drive to accomplish the mission was the fatal factor that contribute to the accident. I knew right then that thats exactly what we needed to have said publicly. Reporter work concluded, i hope this letter will pride the widows some solace after years in which the blame for the accident was incorrectly interpreted to be primarily attributed to their husbands. What did you do with the letter . We went out to the cemetery, my daughter and i, and we placed it on the grave there. We rubbed our hand across his name, and we said, this is your legacy. Now its honorable, and you can finally rest in peace the way that you should have 16 years ago. Reporter Mission Finally accomplished. David martin, cbs news, the pentagon.
