Above baltimore. This is a picture of one of the areas where Police Officers have been battling the street protesters. At least one drugstore in the city is on fire after it was looted by those protesters just a couple hours ago. Rioters threw rocks and bricks at officers. They attacked patrol cars, and late today looting was spreading. Schools, businesses and train stations closed. Baltimore police say at least seven officers were injured. Some of them suffered broken bones. President obama has just talked to the mayor about the violence. We have two reports on this breaking story and first well go the chip reid. Chip . Well, scott this intersection behind me is where the rioting began just a short time ago. It looked like a war down there. My cameraman picked this up off the street. This is an example of what they were throwing at the police. The streets of baltimore erupted in riots today as protesters, many appearing to be high school age, destroyed an unoccupied police car with clubs and baseball bats. Hundreds of heavily armed police many riot ger responded. They were pelted with rock, bricks even large chunks of concrete. System officers picked up the rocks and sent them flying back. Some officers used their shields to deflect the rock. Others werent so lucky. More than half a dozen officers were injured, one had a bloody head. Another was said to be unresponsive. Tear gas filled the air after protesters torched a police cruiser. Baltimore Police Spokesman captain eric qualchek warned residents to stay inside and in a tweet asked parents to find their kids. Youre going to see tear gas. Youre going to see pepper balls. Were going the use appropriate methods to preserve the safety of the community. Reporter it was a blockbyblock battle as abarmy of police advanced and retreated, apparently taking guidance of from the mayor to give protesters some breathing room. At times it appeared to be a frenzy as rioters turned other one vehicle and ripped the door off another. This group ran from ha evidently armed police vehicle. Some were an hebded or arrested, most got away. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowds and pepper spray in close quarters. Looters ransacked a drugstore and a Check Cashing center. Maryland governor larry hogan has said hes now putting the National Guard on alert. Scott, so they will be in position to deploy rapidly as needed. Pelley chip, thanks very much. The riot flead in the hours after this mornings funeral for freddie gray who died last week after his neck was broken while in police custody. Six officers are suspended pending an investigation. More than 2,500 mourners crowded into the new darren Shiloh Baptist church and Wyatt Andrews was there. Freddie gray was buried shortly after his emotional funeral in which members of his family appeared to be near collapse. Several speakers here called gray a marter who died in the cause of exposing police injustice. Did anybody recognize freddie when he was alive . Did you see him . Reporter maryland congressman Elijah Cummings represents baltimore. We will not rest, we will not rest until we address this and see that justice is done. Reporter all of the speakers called for nonviolent protests, but there was no masking the sense of anger in the community. I dont know how you can be black in america and be silent. Reporter the speaker the pastor who gave that spirited eulogy later went out into the streets to ask for calm. The gray family has asked for calm. Scott, at this funeral speaker after speaker challenged the community to show the world what baltimore is made of, but all this violence is not what they were hoping for. This is a live shot here. You can see the large police presence. As we watched this during the day, we found it remarkable that even though they were being pelted the rocks and bricks america times Police Officers retreated rather than confronting the protesters, at least seven officers have been injured. The mayor has promised the results of the Police Departments investigation into the death of gray by this friday. Now, were going to move on to the other major story tonight the catastrophe in nepal. The death toll has passed 4,000 including at least four americans. In some villages threequarters of the buildings collapsed in saturdays earthquake. Survivors are being airlifted to overwhelmed hospitals in the capital kathmandu and that is where Holly Williams begins our coverage. In kathmandu today they worked frantically digging through mountains of rubble with shovels and even their bare hands. This man was found alive after a search team tunneled through the wreckage to where he was trapped. Volunteer rescue worker Balram Galtaum hopes theyll find other survivor but knows they may only discover more bodies. We dont have the proper tools for this, and whatever we have were just doing with our hands. If we can save somebodys life, thats what were looking looking for. Reporter the quake struck just before midday on saturday. The violence of the tremors was captured by this Hotel Security video. From the air, you can see nepals historic capital now pockmarked with flattened buildings. And there have been dozens of aftershocks, jolting the country thats already on edge. Tens of thousands of people are still sleeping in makeshift camp some of them now homeless, but others simply fearful that the after shocks could bring more buildings down on top of them. In this overcrowded hospital, where doctors are struggling to treat the wounded we met yagaur atkari, whose home was demolished by the quake. Despite his fractured spine hes alive. Well, scott weve seen both search and rescue teams and medical teams arriving here in nepal. But a lot of International Help has been slowed down and even turned away because kathmandus airport is simply too small to cope with all the traffic. It was also damaged in the earthquake. Now, the fear here is that there may be many more dead and injured in remote villages that are still cut off from help. Almost immediately they started bringing patients to our camp because we were the only camp that had tents that hadnt been destroyed. The medical facility at base camp was leveled. Reporter over the past 48 hours, a daring airlift has rescued more than 100 climbers stranded high up on the mountain, two at a time, because at this altitude thats all the choppers can carry. And from the devastated ruin of everest base camp, the helicopters have been ferrying away both the wounded and the dead. In spite of that huge rescue effort scott nobody really knows how many climbers may be left on the mountain and the wealth is about to turn bad. It was more like a hurricaneforce wind that knocked people off their feet. It blew people across the glacier for several hundred yards. Pelley so it was the force of the wind off the avalanche and not the mass of snow and ice that killed most of these people . Yeah. It wasnt the traditional avalanche that you think of as snow coming down and burying everybody. Because of the impact of this ice falling for several thousand feet that impact created a force of air that had to go somewhere, so like if you were to be where air has to be blown out. It was blown across the glacier sort of like in a bomb fashion. Pelley the people who were killed, what sort of injuries did they suffer . A lot of injuries were from debris smaller rocks and people getting head injuries, even being maybe impaled like a tentpole just by falling debris. This is the first day of the trial of james holmes, accused of murdering 12 people and wounding 70 in the colorado Movie Theater massacre. Holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, and Mark Strassmann is at the courthouse in sen centennial. 400 people filed enter a boxlike theater to be entertained. And one person came there to slaughter them. Reporter District Attorney George Brauchler told the jury that killer was in the courtroom. His name is james eagen holmes. He tried to murder a theater full of people to make himself feel better. People are running out of the theater that were shot. Reporter on that july night nearly three years ago holmes wore body armour and a gas mask and fired repeatedly with a pistol, a shotgun and an assault rifle. Sixyearold veronica mosersullivan was among the dozen people killed. Since his arrest, holmes appearance has change dramatically, gone is the orange hair and the wildeyed look. The wellgroomed 27yearold today sat quietly tethered to a hook in the courtroom floor. Brauchler said this is video of holmes telling a courtappointed psychiatrist about his point system for taking human life. And the wounded . Theyre like collateral damage, i guess.
