Entered the case of an officer in ferguson, missouri, who shot an unarmed black man to death over the weekend. That sparked rioting. Fires were set. Stores were looted. Today there were peaceful protests along with calls for answers. Dean reynolds is in ferguson. crowd chanting reporter protesters in this largely black community were demanding to know why an unarmed 18yearold who was supposed to start Technical School today wound up in the morgue instead. Enough is enough Reporter Police in riot gear stood by todays protest to guard against a repetition of what took place here overnight. Looting, burning and 32 arrests. Donald harry watched it all. Its like living in beirut. My house is under siege. Reporter Ferguson Police chief tom jackson waded into the protesters this morning and got an earful from sonny ford of st. Louis. We know what happened the man had his hands up and said dont shoot me why was he shot . Reporter do they have valid points . They have a valid point of view but the fact is we dont know what happened. Reporter Dorian Johnson said he was with Michael Brown saturday walking down the middle of canfield drive when he said a policeman who he described as a white male drove up and ordered them to the sidewalk. Johnson said he then grabbed brown around the neck and tried to pull him into his cruiser. He said, ill shoot you, or im going to shoot. And in the same moment the first shot went off. Reporter police say a scuffle ensued but brown broke free. Johnson and other witnesses say the officer ran after him. His weapon was already drawn when he got out of the car. He shot a gun. And my friend turned around, put his hands in the air and he still got down but the the officer approached with his gun and he fired several more shots and he died. Reporter the name of the officer in question has not been released but hes been placed on paid administrative leave and late today the prosecutor for st. Louis county urged anyone with information about this shooting to please come forward. Pelley Dean Reynolds in ferguson. Thank you very much. Late today president obama tried to head off what may be an eminent coup in iraq. Today iraqs president named a new Prime Minister the head of government, but the current Prime MinisterNouri Almaliki, who was seeking a third term, vowed he would not leave office. Maliki ordered loyal troops to take up positions in government buildings and around the capital. Major garrett is with president obama on marthas vineyard. Major . Reporter scott, earlier today president obamas top advisors said a climate of danger and uncertainty surrounded iraqs political process and that a selection of a new Prime Minister was crucial to that countrys future. Late today mr. Obama said there is reason for optimism. Under the iraqi constitution, theres an important step for its form ago new government that can unite iraqs different communities. Now, this new iraqi leadership has a difficult task. It has to regain the confidence of citizens by governing increasively and taking steps to demonstrate its resolve. With those words the president pointedly ignored the current Prime Minister who is stubbornly clinging to power, Nouri Almaliki. The new Prime Minister comes from malikis own political faction even as he calls out military forms to protect him. I urge all iraqi political leaders to work peacefully through the political process in the days ahead. Reporter it was the u. S. Government that brought maliki to power eight years ago. It was hoping he would form an inclusive government and united the country. That did not happen. Frustrations with maliki visible for months and crystallized today when the administration formally withdrew support. Pelley thank you. U. S. Left iraq in 2011. What was gained has been lost as iraq is ripped into thirds by the two branches of islam and the kurdish ethnic minority. I. S. I. S. Has seized much of the west and the north. Last week the kurdish city of erbil was threatened. The siege of the kurds has been relieved somewhat by 19 american air strikes on i. S. I. S. Over the last four days. Holly williams is there. Reporter these men are iraqs best hope for defeating i. S. I. S. Theyre kurdish fighters from iraqs northeast, the only ones on the ground in this region who are still taking on the islamic militants. Iraqi government soldiers abandoned the countrys north two months ago, allowing i. S. I. S. To move in and capture their weapons and tanks, many of them paid for by america. The kurdish fighters are famous for their courage on the battl battlefield, but today they lost another town, jalalla, to the islamic extremists. The front line is just two miles in that direction. This is as close as we can get to the militants positions, and the soldiers here say they need more american air strikes to help them defeat i. S. I. S. They also want the u. S. To give them new weapons that are a match for the extremists theyre fighting. Thousands of iraqis are now facing starvation after they fled i. S. I. S. Through its barren mountaintop. The u. S. And other countries are dropping food and water from the air but it isnt enough and more than 50 children have died. At the command post near the front line, iraqs deputy Prime Minister rowsch shaways, himself kurdish, told us these men cannot defeat the islamic militants themselves. Now, many people here blame the current Prime MinisterNouri Almaliki for fueling religious tensions and allowing the islamic militants to capitalize on them. But the problem is that divisions between shiite muslims, sunni muslims and kurdish iraqis are so deep that its difficult to see how any government could hold iraq together. Iraq for us tonight. Thank you. One reason the president ordered the recent air strikes is to save members of the yazidi religious sect who are facing genocide at the hands of i. S. I. S. They have been triffen into the mount driven into the mountains of Northern Iraq where theyre in danger of starving to death and one Mission Today showed us the deteriorating situation there. The Iraqi Air Force helicopter flew low and slow over the side of mt. Sinjar. A camera crew captured what happened next. Relief supplies including food were pushed outside and gathered by the stranded yazidis. Then as the helicopter slowed and touched down, desperation as yazidis of all ages jumped on to the chopper, in some cases parents pushed their children aboard. Once safely inside, their faces told the story. In another war zone tonight, a new cease fire in gaza is holding. Negotiations on a truce resumed in egypt. This latest war between palestinians and the gaza strip and israel broke out more than a month ago. 1900 palestinians and 67 israelis have been killed. Charlie dagata is there. Reporter an israeli air strike on the fuel tanks of gazas only power plant triggered a massive explosion 12 days ago. The inferno left the plant in ruins. Today we found the u. N. Humanitarian coordinator james rawley surveying the damage. He told us its destruction not only plunged gaza into darkness but a humanitarian crisis. Without electricity, we cant get water into houses, we cant get water into hospitals and other Health Facilities and we cant get water into schools. General manager said the plant had come under fire five times. Was there any good reason . Hamas fired rockets from all over gaza. This power plant, nobody is allowed. We have our security staff. We have our cameras and we are incesting nobody enter this compound. Reporter this is the third time the plant has had to be rebuilt in eight years due to israeli bombs. It will take more than a year and depends on israel lifting its blockade of the gaza strip to let the supplies in. We have to get the agreement of the israeli parties to bring in the spare parts, materials, cement to rebuild gaza once again and thapts not an easy proposition. Reporter we contacted the Israeli Defense force today about the attack on the plant, scott. We are told that it is under investigation. But its worth noting that israel does provide gaza with some electricity and they have been begun repairing some of the power lines that were brought down during the fighting. This evening a sheriff in upstate new york says there is no evidence that a crime was committed in a deadly crash on a race track. Nascar favorite tony stewart was moonlighting in a minor league race on a dirt track saturday night when he struck and killed another driver. Heres don dahler. Reporter sheriffs investigators were taking a closer look at the track today. Saturday nights incident was recorded by a fan. 20yearold kevin ward, jr. Was side by side with Tony Stewarts car when he spun into a fence in a dimly lit section of track. Dressed in his black fire suit, ward jumped out of the car and walked down the track pointing at stewart, another driver avoided being hit while he walked toward the car. Ward was hit and pronounced dead an hour later. No charges are pending but the case is under review. Chuck miller was the race director. It might have been kevin just wanting to show he wasnt going to back down to someone of that statue, but the whole deal started as just a regular hard core racing incident. Reporter confrontations between drivers is becoming more common in auto racing but threetime National Champion tony stewart has a reputation for being especially short tempered.
