This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. The war president obama wanted so much to put behind him is is coming back with a vengeance and demanding his attention. Tonight, two and a half years after the last u. S. Troops left iraq, the country is in danger of falling apart. And hundreds of americans are being evacuated this evening. Government forces are battling militants who are taking back territory where thousands of american troops died, and theyre vowing to march on to baghdad. Mr. Obama said all options are open for helping the Iraqi Government, but his spokesman said that does not include boots on the ground. We have a series of reports on this important, breaking story. First, Holly Williams in iraq. Reporter thousands continue to flee the fighting, streaming across the to iraqi kurdistan, a region that enjoys relative peace amer riad hussein told us hes a soldier in the iraqi army who fought against the militants when they seized the city of mosul on tuesday. Theyre terrorists and i want to crush them, he said but we couldnt resist them because our Commanding Officers abandoned us. Many others have told similar stories, and these pictures show it happening. Iraqi soldiers, many dressed in civilian clothes deserted the battle field outside kirkuk yesterday. Today, the Iraqi Government hit back, launching airstrikes in the north. But on the ground, despite billions of dollars in american aid, iraqs military seems unable or unwilling to take on the armed islamist extremists. Many here resent the government in baghdad because of religious differences, and most of the refugees we spoke to only had praise for the islamic militant. Umm yussuf fled here with her family but told us she likes the militants because they dont harm civilians. She left, she said, because shes worried that iraqs government may try to recapture the city by shelling it. Scott, the militants have reached the outskirts of sam ra, which is just 80 miles north of baghdad. Samra is home of one of the holiest sites in shia iran, and there are fears this could rei reigdeadly tensions. Pelley this is largely a war between two branches of islam, the signee and shia, which split hundreds of years ago, much the way catholics and prot statses divided christianity. The force calls itself the Islamic State of iraq in syria. Elizabeth palmer in syria tonight has more on them. Reporter along with territory, the fighters took prisoners as they swept through Northern Iraq this week. The group has an especially brutal reputation. Online pictures appear to show the bodies of the iraqi police and soldiers they murdered along the way. In an online message today, the spokesman wander its fighters would march onward to baghdad and beyond to the muslim holy cities of carbula and najaf. For 10 years, they have had ambitions to set up a vast Islamic State. Originally known as al qaeda in iraq, its fighters often battled u. S. Troops during the american occupation. Oh i. E. D. Reporter fast forward to 2011, and the start of syrias civil war next door. By then, they had a new name and a new leader. Abu bakr al baghdadi. Its fighters moved back and forth over the iraqsyria border, exploiting the chaos and brutality to become one of the most powerful groups on the battlefield. In areas of syria where they ruled, there were public executions and a code of strict islamic law. Meanwhile, the group is carrying out almost tail suicide bombings in baghdad. No one knows how many fighters there are, but they come from across the arab world to join up with a group thats well funded with revenue from Oil Smuggling and extortion and steadily adding to its arsenal with weapons looted of ever victory. Many islamic militants see isis now setting the extremist agenda, me longer al qaeda, scott, and they see the isis leader al baghdadi, as the new bin laden. Pelley. Isis is now holding much of syria and iraq. Cities that theyve taken in rack were once held by American Forces at great cost fallujah, ramadi, mosul, tikrit, names written in American Military history now written off. American civilians are being evacuated from iraq tonight, and david martin has details on that. David. Reporter scott, more than 200 american contractors, along with a hand full of Defense Department personnel, are being evacuated from balad, the many iraqi airbase about 50 miles north of baghdad. There are several hundred contractors from all nations working there, helping to train the iraqi air force, but they are now being put on aircraft chartered by the companies they work for and flown back to baghdad. It will take until tomorrow to complete the evacuation. So far, there has been no decision to evacuate americans, including diplomats and military personnel, from baghdad, and that is one of the Big Decisions president obama now faces. Pelley david, thank you. Vice President Biden called iraqs president today to say that the United States is prepared to intensify its support. Major garrett is at the white house. Major, what do they mean by that . Reporter scott, the whois wants to defeat the insurgency, and the Iraqi Government has asked for u. S. Air support to stem the advancing threat. At a meeting late today here at the white house, the president was presented with a range of bombing options. I dont rule out anything because we do have a stake in making sure that these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothold in either iraq or syria, for the that matter. Reporter the president is reluctant to throw u. S. Air power behind Iraqi Security forces that refuse to fight. The u. S. Will not send Ground Forces to iraq, even though advisers acknowledge baghdad is in jeopardy. For now, scott, the u. S. Will continue providing humanitarian aid and military assistance to the Iraqi Government. Pelley major, thank you. Congressional correspondent nancy cordes spoke to the speaker of the house, republican john boehner bthe crisis. Reporter do you think the u. S. Should be launching air strikes . And if not what, should the u. S. Do . Well, i think what we should do is to provide the equipment and the Technical Assistance that the iraqis have been asking for. I dont know enough of the details about the air strikes to comment whether we should or we shouldnt. But its not like we havent seen this problem coming for over a year. Now theyve taken control of mosul. Theyre 100 miles from baghdad. And whats the president doing . Taking a nap. Pelley one of the people with deep insight into all of this is mike morell, who until last year, was number two at the c. I. A. And is now a cbs news contributor. Mr. Morrell, these attacking forces, do you believe they have the capability of taking baghdad . So, scott, this is this is no longer an al qaeda terrorist group. This is now an al qaeda army, and i think we have to think about it this way. I do think that they have the capability to threaten baghdad, but i think that iraqi forces and i think that the iranian help that theyre now getting and theyre likely to get more means that its going to be very tough for them to actually take baghdad, and i doubt that, that will happen. Pelley whats at stake for the jiewts the extent to which this group can have safe haif nen western iraq, could mean a base of operations from which they could attack the United States, the United States homeland, and thats something we really have to worry about. Pelley you know, i wonder, you were at the c. I. A. During the entire 10 years of americas involve independent iraq. What is it like watching this territory being taken . Its its disappointment. Its bordering on anger. You know, hundreds of thousands of u. S. Troops fought there to remove saddam is it to bring stability to iraq. Many, many c. I. A. Officers served there, and, you know, it is a real shame to see that stability erode and its now virtually gone. Pelley more than 4,000 americans having lost their lives to secure this territory in that time. Mike morell, former Deputy Director of the c. I. A. , thank vches. Thanks, scott. Pelley moving on now to afghanistan, today, the remains of some Service Members killed there on monday were returned home. They were flown to Dover Air Force base in delaware. Three of the families gave news outlets permission to cover the dignified transfer, as its called. Corporate justin clouse, specialist justin helton, and private aaron toppen were among five killed by mistrike b mista. Bomb. Also returning home tonight is Sergeant Bowe bergdahl, who was held by the taliban for five years. Hes on a flight right now from germany and is expected to arrive at Brooke Army Medical center in san antonio. Manual bojorquez is there. Manuel. Reporter scott, he will land at Lackland Air Force base, and then be transferred here, where a medical team has been rehearsing to help Sergeant Bergdahl regain a sense of control over his life there will be more interviews here about what happened during his fiveyear captivity. He will have access to a lawyer if he wants one. Most importantly, he will be reunited with family, but that will happen only when doctors believe he is prepared for what former captives told us is an overwhelming moment. Scott, bergdahls parents are still in idaho. There is no timeline for the sergeants release. The process here can take days or months. Pelley manual bojorquez in san antonio, thank you, manuel. Soccers world cup opened today in wr brazil. Brazil has spent 11 billion on this monthlong event, and today it made sure nothing would disrupt it. Elaine quijano is in sao paulo. Reporter these demonstrators had planned to protest the most expensive world cub in history. We pay a lot of taxes, have low salarys. We are not listened to here. The people are fed up. But they didnt get very fire. Police stopped them in their tracks. This is the neighborhood where protesterprotesters advertised n facebook that they wanted together. You can see theyve been met with a heavy Police Presence here including percussion grenades and even at points tear gas. That left many more upset. The basic needs of the population are not met, Elliot Rodger said. We see the freedom to protest is not guaranteed in brazil. But closer to the stadium, throngs of happy fans were oblivious to the protests, waving flags and blowing horns in support of the home team. Gustavo sousa came dressed for the occasion. It means happiness for brazilians. Reporter and in this poor neighborhood overlooking the 400 million stadium, the mood was also celebratory. He told us the government had spent money on a subway station and new Shopping Center ahead of the world cup and he was thrilled to be watching wra zil kick off the tournament. Despite the earlier protests and clashes with police, tonight, scott, aus celebration is getting under way. Pelley elaine quijano, thanks elaine. Facebook opens its files on you.
