Glor hi, everyone. Im jeff glor. Its a review of the fbi lab in washington that is opening eyes across the country and now it could reopen hundreds of criminal cases. 95 of cases looked at so far included flawed testimony that includes 32 Death Penalty cases. This weekend the fbi acknowledged mistakes and Jericka Duncan has details. Reporter before dna testing became prevalent the fbi relies heavily on visual analysis of evidence, sometimes building occasions on microscopic analysis of hair. But in 2012, federal officials launched an investigation after the Washington Post reported that flawed presentic hair matches might have led to the convictions of hundreds of people. A in a full report coming out tomorrow, the Innocence Project and the National Association of criminal defense lawyers will say that from the 1970s through 1999, 25 of 29 fbi forensic examiners made errors in their testimony impacting 257 cases. The reports will says, out of 18 executions, 12 of them had errors in either testimony or lab reports. Innocence project cofounder Peter Neufeld says this could mean hundreds of appeals nationwide. The first order of business frankly is the fbi and doj has to redouble their efforts to get the transcripts of the hundreds and hundreds of cases of people where fbi agents gave exaggerated testimony. Reporter Justice Department issued a statement saying the department and the fbi are committed to ensuring that affected defendants are notified of past errors, and that justice is done in every instance. Connecticut senator richard blumenthal. The question now is, why it was permitted to continue and thats a question that the fbi has to answer after an investigation, a systematic analysis of the root causes, why did it happen . Reporter not all of the cases depended heavily on flawed hair match analysis, which will make it more difficult jeff, for some to appeal their cases. Glor Jericka Duncan, thank you. At least 31,000 runners and a million spectators are expected at tomorrows Boston Marathon, which, again will be under tight security. Extra measures put in place last year after the 2013 deadly bombings will remain in place including surveillance cameras. Spectators are discouraged from bringing large coolers or backpacks. On tuesday, the trial of convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev enters the penalty phase. The jury will decide whether the 21yearold gets the Death Penalty or life in prison and don dahler is in boston. Reporter the prosecution is expected to remind jurors of Dzhokhar Tsarnaevs deliberate actions that led to the death of four people including 8yearold martin richard. Tsarnaev can be seen setting his bomb down just feet away from the child. The defense Team Including antiDeath Penalty specialist judy clarke is expected to put tsarnaevs family members on the stand to portray him as a typical College Student who was radicalized and led astray by his overbearing older brother testimony. Whats tamerlan. Whats not clear is what testimony the judge will aloup he limited it during during the trial stage. But despite the brutality of the bombings legal experts say its the defense that has the advantage. Massachusetts has no Death Penalty. Tsarnaev was convicted in federal court. While a recent cbs news poll shows 60 of americans favor the Death Penalty for tsarnaev, almost the exact opposite is true among bostonians. The small bombs reporter ed davis was Bostons Police commissioner at the time of the bombings. This is massachusetts. Do you think theres a jury in this state thats going to be able to hand down the Death Penalty . I think there is. Im not a big advocate of the Death Penalty. Ive never been extremely supportive of it. I think it has its place, and i think this is a place. Reporter even among the victims, there is disagreement. In a boston globe essay Martin Richards family urged prosecutors to take the Death Penalty off the table. In exchange for the defendant spending the rest of his life in prison without any possibility of release and waiting all of his waiving all of his rights to appeal. But patrickdowns who Patrick Downes has an evening stronger desire. I want this to be over. I want th to be over for our city. I want this to be over for the families. Reporter the marathon will be run here tomorrow, but the day after jurors are looking at a marathon of their own. Between the prosecution and defense cases as well as deliberations, jeff, the penalty phase could take another four weeks. Glor don dahler. Thank you. Tornado watches in the south today as violent thunderstorms moved across the region. Those storms are moving up the coast and will affect tens of millions including those participateating in tomorrows Boston Marathon. Were joined by eric fisher chief meteorologist at our boston station wbz. Eric what is ahead tonight first . This has been a slowmoving system all week long. And more thunderstorms working into the midsouth overnight could become destructive with large hail damaging winds and heavy rain threat moves over towards the northeast and the Boston Marathon into monday. The main area threat region were watching mississippi valley, little rock, back toward oklahoma. This is where some of the strongest storms will be developing tonight and moving east. Tomorrow that threat goes to the east coast so places like d. C. Raleigh, and down into Central Florida could all see some isolated severe storms. Hundreds offing my rapts are feared dead after their bode capsesized off the coast of libya. Italian Officials Say 18 ships are searching for survivors. In the past week, nearly 10,000 refugees have been rescued at sea and brought to italy. Lean lean in allen pizzey in italy has more on this calling crisis. A call from a rescue vessel sums up the horror. Were checking who is alive and who is dead among the bodies floating in the water. The disaster in what was already dubbed the most Dangerous Passage in the world prompted calls for something to be done. Cbs news was aboard one of the rescue ships which picked up migrants from a sinking boat a few days ago. What they had to endure is almost beyond imagining. Migrants tell tales of being held in appalling conditions by smugglers who often beat them. They only put you in the boat and leave you there. Its now left to you and allah. At his sunday blessing, pope francis appealed to the International Community to take swift and decisive action. They are men and women like us, our brothers seeking a better life, starving, persecuted wounded, exploited, victims of war, he said they were looking for a better life. The refugees come from warravaged and impoverished parts of africa and increasingly syria. These Twin Brothers made it to the island of lampedusa. If we had stayed we would have been dead, mohammed said. You only die once in your life. We decided to risk dying trying to reach here. French president Francois Hollande labeled the smugglers terrorists and called for a much more intense fight against human smuggling. One option being proposed is a blockade on libyan ports from where most of the boats set off. But that isnt likely to stop the smugglers from trying to make money or the desperate from taking the potentially lethal risks. Allenallen pizzey allen, cbs news, rome. Glor isis released a video today claiming it shows the mass execution of ethiopian christians in libya. Alex ortiz has more on the growing influence in north africa. Reporter the latest isis video delivered a clear and direct threat to christians in the middle east. You will not have safety, even in your dreams, until you embrace islam. Reporter then militants carried out what appears to be a mass keyexugs. Execution. Masked men lined up two groups of ethiopian christians, shooting some captives and beheading others. Still, isis claimed that christians who pay a tax to live in its territories are welltreated and called on christians who have left isiscontrolled land to return. In the same video this man is identified as a christian who said hes safe and happy living under the islamic state. But isis has a welldocumented history of targeting religious minorities in syria and iraq massacring civilians and desecrating churches. This is the second mass execution of christians in libya isis claims to have carried out this year bringing their campaign of terror to the shores of the mediterranean. Alex ortiz, cbs news, cairo. Glor weve long been told aspirin can help reduce heart disease. Now a new study says longterm regular aspirin use can substantially cut the risk of some kinds of cancer. Here now to explain is dr. Heather yeo of new york presbyterianweill cornell medical center. Doctor, good to see you. Why was this study so significant . Thanks, jeff. Actually, the study is important because its one of the first studies to study patients, 130,000 patients actually, for such a long period of time. They studied patients for over 32 years and showed that after taking a moderate amount of aspirin for a long period of time, patients had a significantly decreased risk of cancer. Glor gastrointestinal and colorectal cancers . Correct. And in fact, for gi cancers, the risk goes down by 20 percent, and for colorectal cancers, for patients i treat in particular, it goes down by 25 . So thats really exciting news. Glor but the duration, it did say, what, 16 years, before it is effective in this way . Correct. Patients need to take the aspirin for at least 16 years, and after theyve stopped taking for a period of three or four years, the benefits no longer there. Glor by the way, when you say regular basis, what does that mean . So, regular basis means that patients had to take at least two 325mg tablets during the week. Glor what is it the aspirin is doing . So aspirin works through a number of mechanisms. Probably the most important one is by decreasing inflammation, but it also works on clotting in the blood system and it also works to decrease cancer cell production. Glor theres evidence that aspirin can treat cancer. This just dealt with actually preventing cancer to begin with. We should mention that. The bottom line, then, is, from this study, should be just rush out and buy that aspirin, or no . I think the bottom line jeff, is that patients need to talk to their doctors about it. Aspirin is not right for everyone. Again, it has side effects. But this will help increase the dialogue between both physicians and their patients. Glor thanks very much. Thanks. Glor in oklahoma city, 168 seconds of silence were observed for the 168 victims killed 20 years ago today.
