And this is the travel show in which we talk about vacations and welcome I'm Arthur Frommer's and I'm Pauline Frommer and in the time ahead we're going to be discussing travel and that is a topic that you all could help us with if you'd like to talk with us either as a guest on the show or to ask a question or leave a comment on travel email me at for Olmert travel show at yahoo dot com And even if you don't want to be on the show we want to make it clear that we're not just here on radio you can pick up our guidebooks in stores you can visit us online me either follow us on social media just look for the word fromer f r o m m e r on Pinterest on Instagram on Twitter on Facebook or better yet come to for Omer's dot com which is a one stop shop for all of your vacation needs we have all kinds of journalistically prepared to travel advice and information now Pauline let's start today's program by talking about how why and that is surely a popular topic everybody wants to go to the why on islands at some point in their lives and there has never been a better time for doing so than now and why is that it's because a price war that's right a price war has suddenly broken out in airfares from the West Coast to Hawaii is that substantially reduce the cost of going there the price war began this. Past March and April when Southwest Airlines that notorious price cutter Southwest began flying to a why from the West Coast to wherever Southwest Airlines chooses to fly for the 1st time you can bet that prices are going to plummet they will actually plummet now the chief competitor to Southwest Airlines on its whole why routes as a whole why and airlines and Southwest has posed a deathly challenge to that long as stablished and rather expensive airline that used to charge upwards of $600.00 roundtrip to fly from the West Coast of the United States to Hawaii and the moment the Southwest 3 Gand flying to all live for such low prices prior prices the profit of Hawaiian Airlines in the 2nd quarter of this year has fallen. But the president of Wian Airlines has recently announced that he will be fighting back he's not accept rigs or render despite the temporary cut in his profits he has recently attempted to undercut the at Qana me fares of Southwest by creating a brand new air fare called basic economy basic economy which you pay a very small price for flying there but you don't receive seat selection you know receive meals you know receive free movies or know me yet other perks on your flight to Hawaii but I guess you just pack it yourself right that permits you to undercut the airfares of South was there lies that Southwest has fought back against Hawaiian air in a number of ways in so many ways that the summer they sometimes change almost daily here and it does make it impossible to say what you will encounter and how much you will pay on your own trip there this. The situation is simply too volatile for one thing Southwest has continued its normal practice of permitting passengers to check a board 2 pieces of luggage without paying a fee that's a saving of as much as $50.00 as it quali out that's great otherwise it is also is is presently flying from San Jose and from Oakland California to Honolulu and Maui and it will shortly begin flying as well from San Diego and Sacramento to. All of the 8 those are all famous routes that used to be handled almost exclusively by Hawaiian Airlines and as earlier mentioned the price war between the 2 airlines is today so hot and so furious that is it is impossible to tell you what you charged if you fly there tomorrow or today is really out of the the fares are changing on a daily basis but you could be assured absolutely assured that you will be paying bargain prices so if you have a year and to enjoy how why and vacation now is the time it will it will never be cheaper to cross the Pacific Ocean to why than it is now it's a go to your computer and see what prices are currently being offered by Southwest Airlines and by Hawaiian Airlines who are the 2 prizefighters in the current price war there and now let's turn to a more serious travel topic while the one that nevertheless has an immense significance when you measure. The travel aspect of what I'm about to say against the economic health of our economy normally when talking about the economy our current national administer. Talks about unemployment and about Rose domestic income another difficult formulas but they should also be taking into account the amount and the number of foreign tourists that are now coming to our shores that measurement also has a major impact on the health of our economy and the current new is the current news Baldwin is extremely pessimistic just recently the prestigious u.s. Travel Association has reported that the decline in foreign tourist to the United States is far worse than any of us ever imagined and the subject calls out for action specifically in the year 2015 just 4 years ago our nation used to enjoy 13.7 percent of all the long range of international travel taking place in the world as a whole that that percentage in the year 22020 rather that the year coming up that percentage will fall to only 11 percent representing a loss of 13000000 tourists a year who are no longer traveling to our nation and causing a drop off in spending by those tours of 59000000000 dollars 59000000000 dollars that otherwise would have been spent on hotels and restaurants and shops and stores and transportation attractions and all the other items that tourists normally purchase but wait the Fed The figures are going to get even worse they're going to get even worse according to the u.s. Travel Association from now until the year 2022. In just that 3 year period the negative figure will amount to a loss of $41000000.00 of foreign tourists who would have spent a great deal of money in our country but are no longer spending anywhere near $180000000000.00 in the United States they are there their total expenditures are amounting to less than $180000000000.00 And that means a loss of jobs. One out of every 11 Americans works in the travel industry and it's not a full effect of that hauled in has not yet been exposed experience but it is about to be experienced because we're talking about a year from now as there is do you ever done a how are those figures actually experienced well as one example in New York City today you are beginning to see a terminations of business by small companies operating street window locations mall up and down the streets of Manhattan when you walk out happened today you buy one company one small business after another that is gone abit of business and they can no longer enjoy the added business of foreign tourists. Now how did that all come about although a strong u.s. Dollar may have contributed somewhat to that lost most of it is directly attributed to actions set off by the president you cannot prohibit tourism from several Muslim majority nations without suffering a decline in what would have been millions of Muslims Taurus coming out of the United States you cannot launch a trade war with China without losing incoming tourism by millions of Chinese tourists and Chinese travelers are the biggest travelers in the world and that the biggest spenders each one of them spends. On the average of 7. Or $7000.00 Paula when they come to the us to continue here you cannot proclaim the words America 1st without convincing millions of would be a foreign businesses businesses rather that you are an unfriendly nation toward those would be towards you you cannot suffer mass killings by domestic terrorists using assault rifles against their enemies you cannot do that without frightening millions of foreign tourists from coming here and as bad as the figures for international tours coming here as bad as those figures presently are they are only getting worse according to the u.s. Travel Association all this and more will soon be reflected in overall economic figures or will account in a drop in living standards for most Americans in effect let me say that again you cannot thumb your nose at the rest of the world without dissuading them from coming here as Taurus and our. Current standard of living is to a certain extent directly affected by those incoming tourism figures which are now so low I welcome that on happy note we have to take a commercial but we'll be right back. Deal Saturday mornings at 5 on the news off of 103 point 501490 am. Welcome back to the travel show I'm Pauline Frommer and our guest today is Scott McCartney You may know that name because he is the long time columnist who writes The Middle Seat column for The Wall Street Journal Hey Scott welcome back to the travel show great to be with you Paula and so in your research a recent column you had very good news for travelers which is why fight is going to be more widely available and bleed free and can you give us just before we get into how that can happen can you get is give us a background on and how airlines support of wife I at this point you know it's it's really kind of fascinating So if you if you sort of stop and think about it it's really quite amazing that you can get connected to the Internet. From a metal tube that racing through the sky. 5 or 600 miles an hour and 5 or 6 miles above ground level. And. Why 5 started where airplanes. Could connect with round the end so go go with the leading company and they put receivers very much like so your service all over the country on the ground and as the plane what fly along it would connect from antenna to and. And that would provide the ground service now that obviously limited capacity and slow and when as we all know when a lot of people want to use that often nobody could use it because the system would get overloaded right so airlines started. And some went directly to satellite service some have been switching to satellite service and there's been a couple of generations of that. First generation using satellite to broadcast t.v. Networks use and all and later services specifically designed for airplane wife. And so the satellite service now can really give you a lot of capacity at very high speeds and so you get a very good experience and you can stream video you can do just about anything you want and you know that we have this odd situation in airlines although somewhat typical of some ways to the crazy airline business where the satellite service is actually a whole lot better and a whole lot cheaper than the ground based service which really isn't very good service but turns out to be priced very expensively because the airlines are actually trying to discourage too many people from using it in quieting that type was yeah very expensively in there and I think the frustrating thing that's happened to me probably has happened to a lot of our listeners where you pay $24.00 or so to get on and why fight during a flight and then it doesn't work. And you say you know many carriers will make it free will it be the satellite coverage that's free or the lousy ground service that's free middle but it'll be the satellite coverage the ground service will still exist mostly on small regional jets and older planes that are that will be retired not investing in the equipment on that but that's part of it will probably be a year or 2 before we'll see the big airline offered for free Jet Blue So actually are. Already offering it for free I know that I sometimes because I always buy this in the wife I guess I always have to work on planes and I've started factoring that into the cost of what I look at I had Jet Blue because it can be so expensive in Jet Blue has it for free what the airlines are trying to do and just for anybody tuning in late we are speaking with Scott McCartney who is the middle seat columnist for The Wall Street Journal and Scott what the airlines have to do is they're trying to get sponsors so they don't have to carry the entire cost of installing new systems right yeah that's right. You know when when this started the attraction of go go in the ground based system was go go with. The airplane and then and then go go would collect the revenue when you paid your $20.00 sometimes the $40.00 for the for that service while the airlines got out of that business and they started investing spending the money for the for the satellite equipment and to defray that cost they've been looking at different sponsorships than you are already see some of that. So Amazon has sponsored something with the Blue for example right American Airlines has a deal with Apple for for free Apple music and you could see to see that extending it so you know the people on airplanes are very attractive to market or they have disposable income. You know they. Have specific needs as travelers things like that so you could see all kinds of different companies that want to get in front of them so the sponsorship might be somewhat what airports tried where you might have to watch a video to get it right he service or or you know you just see the ad and you have to quit. Or is that to get on the service and you know I think people are generally happy with that though they'll do that to get the free service All right are there any I mean we're talking 2 years away for most of this but are there any credit cards or the loyalty programs or any other things we can do to join to get this free sooner. You know I don't. You don't think of any off hand this was a shot in the dark it's not your column so I apologize if I stump you know there was there may be something out there I just think of it really interesting thing about pretty to me is that if you charge for y. 5. You know about 7 percent that 10 percent of the people on the airplane will actually pay to use it even if you just charge a dollar the having to take out your credit card and log in and all of that becomes a deterrent for people using it and what airlines are finding is they're going to invest all this money and it's a huge customer satisfaction driver they get complaints about why spider find more complaints about what high than the just about anything else and I had no if they're if they're going to spend this money they want they want to reach more of their customers and if they're going to attract sponsors they want to reach more of their customers so if you make it free and they've done some testing on this 405060 percent of the people on the airplane will use it yet and that that's also why it's going to take 2 years right you have to get the capacity to where a 60 percent of the here on the airplane are going to be using it well thank you so much Scott we've been speaking with Scott McCartney of the Wall Street Journal. You're listening to the travel show I'm Pauline Frommer here with my dad Arthur Frommer and on the phone we have one of our favorite guests back she is Andrea Sax She is a travel writer for The Washington Post and her latest adventure sounds really fun it's and her she wrote an article titled In Sweden a d. I y. Dining adventure Welcome back Andrea and what does d i y mean in this case Hi It's great to be back 1st of all and I was I can't really claim I have the I lied in my mail because I am not the greatest of partying or cooking at all. But I did I know some people do it but I did this program until I had no 4th wave and and a cop out of a country and idea that you go out they set up their can pick them up of all around the country and they provide rest appears on line and some parking ticket and then you're supposed to go out into the woods and forage for your mail and then cook it and then eat it all and it will benefit the way that wow so you're you're going out into the woods in Sweden and you're foraging but. Is that legal it is very legal and then to bring this from and go back to the Middle Ages this philosophy and policy that it is called freedom to roam and really there's no there is private land that really like Land is Your Land and so there are a couple restructure and you can't for example going to someone's garden and picking their vegetables right you can go on the outskirts of their property and forage pick them berries you can go into the fields as long as they're not harvesting of Jonathan the industrial that they really encourage you to just roam Wow But you're not Ok so you're foraging but that is different than hunting you are not killing animals right I did ask that. I wondered about the protein right you have facing so for some of the coastal picnic tables and I went to I tried out to one in small and down in the south and want to unlock plants that have Flatland and we did try fishing I in the again so I was hoping we wouldn't catch any fish but it was fun to see everyone out with their fishing rods but they started to get they brought fish for us that the local and fresh but you can fish they don't really encourage hunting it is legal they do most but I try they've got to all so you said they brought fish for us so that means there are 2 ways to do this right you can either be truly do it yourself and just go to one of these picnic tables find a recipe and forage or you can work with someone to help you with this right correct yes there are a couple levels though the most simple the most is you just book a stay at one of these picnic tables and that's free and then you just get the recipes online and that's free and then you would have to have a frying pan right and maybe some oil or other things yet and that's the great question because you can do add on so you could get a cooking kit and that will have some really simple camping equipment and some Baystate them stable for cooking like salt and pepper and oil things that you can. And forage for right now it varies depending on the location but it's only you know like 10 dollars 12 dollars phone especially for Scandinavia that the bargain. And then you can add on say a foraging guide or a chef or a fishing guide or some health at the table and might like an anthropology catalog I mean it with twinkling life and it was so beautiful you know out into the it depends on how much you want to spend and how like and to feel like you want to get and so all sort of how much did you spend to have the gorgeous table and this yes. I thought of a large Lapland was a little cheaper so I had this couple who run the program and they helped me with the Ford thing and the cooking and I think about 45 dollars 50 dollars and deals on a lot of 1st Scandinavia that ain't bad exactly I know that's why it's so good you know and it was fresh and it with so tasty and we participated so it's really fun to see the cooking techniques and know that you have a handle let's let's let's let's unpack that we are speaking with Andrea Sachs who's a travel writer for The New York for the a live for the Washington Post I was I was making you a staffer for every major newspaper in the u.s. She has a terrific article in The Washington Post called in Sweden a do it yourself dining adventure so you're in Lapland places you show up what happens. So I'm in math land and weather tons of rain barefoot with amazing and I met the couple who were my guide and my escort and then 1st we started just foraging for different herbs and berries It was early in the theism for them they're about 6 weeks behind the hall of what the berry thing is that me at it was that mushroom thing is that much high wish I'd go and I'd love to go back for mushrooms Yeah but we had a ton of herbs and flowers and there were nice Wow half the ad we ate some clover there and they were purple and they were tasty but I don't twig to get stuck in your teeth I have to say. But no one ferret of your teeth or tried to run a twig in your teeth and then we forage for a product like 3045 minutes and then we went to the cooking they so much which way on the beautiful lake it's a deep the flake and we then and then we tried fishing but it was really you know just for the the kicks of it and then the chef actually came out with some fish from home and he smoked it. And that we had fish too and they smoked the engine apart so you can smoke it in that short a time I mean the time it takes to cook dinner yes I do I did that and I just wanted that they made homemade bread to why don't we fry bread we fry bread and we bake bread yeah oh my goodness it was incredible what they could do for the small and we had a 3 course meal including to start with homemade caramel that were out on the open fire and this happens in other parts of Sweden too I'm assuming it doesn't happen in the heart of Stockholm doesn't have them very close and like a half an hour out on the island from dot com and that one thawed out immediately that 1 September I tried to get on that one so you could you could do just Stockholm and then do this is a side trip because most visitors from the us to Sweden don't go that far beyond Stockholm No And you're absolutely right and now one is perfect for people wholy they for there for a day or 2 because they're the ones to take either. Train or flight then. It does take a while to get out there I want to add that you're so happy that you took that yes it's core experience I hear right from dot com And that line it's called I'm not sure it caused you to go to tell you today with an archipelago how wonderful our e-mail we've been speaking with Andrea Sachs who wrote a sad bill is article for The Washington Post in Sweden a deal I Why dining adventure thank you so much Andrea thanks for having me. That the blood just I did that because he sees you're right here and she comes up to me and she says sneering or no way you know I saw that same radio commercial Yeah well the blonde was talking to you she caught a glimpse of me as I rode my surfboard across a way and ride a 2nd money right after me calling my point saying I'm sorry if I don't pay say what I already have that might be seen on the radio call k y c 844517048 low. Sports to remember the Tri-City sports round up Saturday mornings at 8 you're on the news from 103.51490 am. You're listening to the travel show I'm Pauline Frommer here with my father Arthur Frommer and on the phone we have Julie we who wrote an interesting piece called The airport lounge is much improved if you can squeeze in Welcome back to the travel show Julie what do you mean if you can squeeze in. His are getting really crowded they used to be these sort of away sleeves for business people and just trying to get away from it from the airport terminal to do some work and maybe have a cocktail after a long day of meetings and now there's just there's so many more people who have access to the lounge and the lounge with themselves are proving with better food so it is getting quite crowded so why are there more people who have access I mean is it because there are more people flying 1st class and business class. There are more people flying over Also there are definitely more people buying more expensive tickets but there's also more people getting credit cards with lounge access. And as I was saying the lounges are improving that people on the spend more time there whereas you know and I might add a path to go from there in a car right to the to the gate to catch their plane. At the American lounge they have autocratic this morning I'm going to stop on my way and they you know that there's a lot more crowding for a lot of reasons and what really surprised me in your article was a lot of families may be using them because some lounges now have family friendly items in them I think that's going to dismay a lot of business travelers actually yet said this is travelers are already dismayed if you look on line that bad behavior you know that the you know complaint . Videos of kids like running amok in it. So I think I think that the kids came 1st and the kids amenities are coming after that the places they're creating a good place they are they might just have more like coloring books or just kids snacks things to keep the kids occupied me most about this want to come in there for you know a place The Good Wife 5 they want to plug in their phone and have something to eat there's a kind of the basics but now with children's playroom there's like room for nursing mothers and some places there's spa treatments there's all kinds of things that are being added for the variety of people that are coming there who what I thought was fascinating in your piece is you make the point and once again for anybody tuning in late we're speaking with Julie we'd who has a great article in The New York Times called the airport lounge is much improved if you can squeeze in you make the point that often the airport lounge will reflect the nature of the people who are coming to that particular airport so a lounge in Chicago say will be very different from a lounge in a while who. Right right so Chicago is a super busy building more people coming in at all hours and be dashing in for a quick snack in a resort destination their privacy or a flight to the crowd will more come in waves so it's relaxing there for an hour and so the airlines and independent lads operators like American Express and cherry lounges they design for crews coming in and what they expect to do there now out of the. Everybody is kind of putting in tens of millions of dollars into these new lounges Alaska Airlines for theft with spending $50000000.00 on the lodges and the thing they have to last a good decade and so they're being designed that could be more flexible because people aren't sure like what trends are going to come next but you know things they change with the fact you don't know a decade from now what the needs will be so the spaces are more flexible to have things moved in and out the back of the house where it should and more flexible as to what they're going to bring in and out so that kind of designing now knowing that thing. Things trend in and out and speaking of Alaska Airlines it's gotten pretty she she with it's lounge in Seattle I mean it has things in that lounge that I never thought you would see in an airport lounge Can you talk about some of the wacky new extras that we're seeing at some lounges. Alaska. For Alaska Airlines is Seattle and so Seattle has been growing by leaps and bounds in its passenger list Alaska's it's opened up a 3rd violence there they already had 2 and this one is gigantic It's $16000.00 square feet it has a beautiful view of the tarmac. But as he said it has like some extras it has and their thing area for new mothers It has a fire pit which you can kind of sit around and have your your special craft beer from the Seattle area my goodness are they giving you like sticks to do smores like this car paint I had I didn't see that it did I think great idea you know well I'd go I'd buy past for that. A fire pit and what about other lounges what other extras are receiving beyond Alaska airs. Some places have bought treatment instead of the international out here for people taking international flights are even better equipped because people are there for longer their business class seat holders so they pay thousands of dollars there's places that you can have like literally a meal in a dining room before you get on your flight Well if you don't want to have the airport food I mean the airline airplane food and you just want to go to sleep or you're overnight flight to London or whatever you can go to that lounges down dining room or something up and then you have your meal and the like and I love the fact that some of these launches are trying to reflect the area that they're in so you say that Delta's lounge at Reagan National outside d.c. Has a chandelier that looks like a cherry blossom tree that's just hilarious others are serving local beers Well it's a fascinating piece I do read it it's by Julie wade in the New York Times the airport lounge is much improved if you can squeeze in thanks so much Julie thank you so much for having me. Come back to the travel show I'm Pauline Frommer here with my dad Arthur Frommer and at the beginning of the show we started out by talking about the drop in travel to the United States one of the factors in that drop in it's a minor factor but it still counts is how unpleasant flying is in the United States not only are our cumbersome security system but also a lot of the things that are argue as carriers impose on travelers and on from worse dot com which is our website we have a really great article called High boarding group number don't panic the airlines are messing with you just in the last year or so the number of boarding groups and the way boarding is done has gotten ever more baroque and why is that because the airlines want to stress out travelers they want to stress out travelers to the extent that travelers will pay extra fees to feel like they are being treated better in fact in 2018 which is the last year we have stats for this the u.s. Airlines collected $4900000000.00 just in fees and that's an absolutely diabolical I guess diluted diabolical you to get the consciously take that into account that there definitely I may or the boarding process is more and more baroque and more and more cumbersome and they're putting people most around money and that people stranded money off to get a lower number when they board now this is partially because there's this fight to the death. At the boarding gate to get on 1st so that you can get your luggage into one of those coveted overhead bins which is again because of what the airlines have done to passengers because airlines now charge for luggage everybody is competing like mad there's one website who calls the boarding process or the boarders at the boarding process gate lice. Just because it's gotten to be such an ugly scene so the thing to know is calm down. We know that even if you're in groups for that is usually only premium economy and gold level frequent flyers that is a small number of people even at that high a level you probably will be able to get your luggage into a been in fact many of these processes are now going up to 2 groups 78 and 9 depending on the size of the flight so you're going to hear a lot of numbers but it doesn't mean there are that many people in each group ahead of you they're just breaking up the number of people on the plane into smaller groups for those announcements than they used to as you said earlier diabolical to read all about all the details on this go to for armors dot com The article once again is called High boarding group number don't panic we thank you for listening of We'd love to travel despite these problems and for those who are traveling wish you a hearty bone black guy.
