Savannah, i was just watching the open of the show, and i got a glimpse of the Rockefeller Christmas tree lit this morning. This is supposed to be the most joyous and festive time of the year. You and i were supposed to be part of that Tree Lighting ceremony last night. Reporter police say farook left the event after some sort back with malik. Both armed with assault rifles and handguns. Explosive devices were also used in the attack. I think based upon what we have seen and based upon how they were equipped, there had to have been some degree of planning that went into this. We have not ruled out terrorism. Overnight, his brotherinlaw apologized to the victims, but gave no indication of a motive. On behalf of my family for the victims, its unbelievable what happened. I am very sad, like deeply sad and shocked. Reporter as investigators comb crime scenes for leads, some families reunited with loved ones. This womans sister survived the doors opened, they began shooting. Everybody hit the floor. She said it lasted 30, 40 seconds. Paused for a moment and started again. Then they were gone. Didnt say anything. Reporter you know, this city is clearly reeling. Im looking across to the mayor of the city off our camera. Hes going to join me in just a second. The crime scenes are still very active. Not only the one just behind me down the road, the Inland Regional Center, but also the street where the suv was eventually stopped. Nbc National Correspondent Miguel Almaguer joins us with dramatic images inside the ordeal as survivors speak out. Manuel, goodout. Rang out. They hid in clo miguel, good morning to you. Sets and ran for reporter it started like a normal day at work. Holiday party when the gunshots rang out. They hid in closets and ran for their lives. People in a panic, frantic, all over the place, screaming and yelling. Just like a bloody warpath. It was just crazy. Reporter as the walking still hiding inside. I need to see youre alive, youre okay, that nothing is wrong with you. Take a photo and text it to me. She did, thank god. Reporter 14 were dead, at least 17 wounded. The lucky escaped the gunfire, but not the memory of what happened inside. Reporter even with the suspects dead, theyll have to relive this whole thing, matt. Theyll have to talk to investigators in detail about what they saw. Of course, many of them knew the gunmen. Miguel, thank you very much. I want to turn to nbcs justice correspondent Pete Williams. Hes been talking to Law Enforcement sources throughout the night. Pete, what are you hearing . They say they still dont know what led syed farook and his wife to carry out such a brutal and deadly attack, matt. Authorities say it was well planned. Not only were the two heavily armed, they had prepared and brought some homemade bombs. At least three devices have been the attack. Federal Officials Say a check of Border Protection records showed farook recently traveled to saudi arabia. They believe it was a religious pilgrimage that religious muslims are to make at least once in their lives. Authorities will look through the couples computers, looking for clues. Theyll examine farooks employment records, talk to his coworkers, to see if they can shed any light. Authorities say some people who knew farook told them his personality began to change six months ago. This morning, investigators cannot say what this attack was. Was it a workplace dispute that spun so strangely out of control . Was it jihadist inspired terrorism, or was it a combination of the two . Matt . But, pete, ive known you for years and years. Youre one of the most careful journalists ive ever met. Less like any kind of simple workplace dispute, and more and more like the nightmare weve all been fearing. Someone blending into our society and carrying out an attack. It certainly does. That is why, i think, there is so much puzzled, trying to find an explanation. They cant interview both of the people in involved in the shooting. Both are dead, the man and the woman. They have to see if there is any other indication. Did they leave a message on social media, something in their computers . No one theyve talked to yet can give an explanation. Reporter Pete Williams. Pete, thank you very much. With us now is carey davis, the mayor of San Bernardino. Thank you for joining us. Condolences to you. Im sure the Police Department and your office were swamped overnight, with calls from people who were scared, shut in homes and businesses, wanting to know if its safe to come out. First priority has been and will continue to be public safety. Our Police Department responded as efficiently as they could. It was a massive outpouring of concern for our community. The city, overnight, has been on high alert. We will continue until we hear from the Police Department, following their lead. All throughout the day, we heard there were possibly three shooters actively involved in the massacre inside the Inland Regional Center. Are you confident now, after talking with police and atf and fbi, that everyone who was actively involved in that shooting has been killed . Matt, as you know, this is an active investigation. Were not going to compromise any information. The Police Department is controlling. Were deferring all of our information to our Police Department. I was just talking to Pete Williams in washington, our justice correspondent. Are you waking up today to the fear that there may have been a community . Again, matt, this is an active investigation. Were leaving that up to the Law Enforcement, to make sure they conduct it. When we find out more information from them, they will be releasing that information. I know you had a chance yesterday to stop and talk to some of the people who were inside that Regional Center at the time this happened. Also talked to family members of people who were inside. What kinds of stories were you hearing . Our community is very saddened by this event. The crime that took place has certainly impacted San Bernardino. You could see the emotions that they were dealing with, the shock, the desperation that they must have felt during those moments of unknown and panic. But again our Police Department surrounding neighboring. Surrounding aneighboring agencies came to the aid of San Bernardino. The fbi was here, as you know. It was a massive effort to make sure that they secured that facility as quickly and as well as they could. As the mayor of a city of a couple hundred thousands people, im sure youve watched the coverage of other Mass Shootings across the country. Did you watch the coverage of those events with the thought in the back of your mind that it could happen just down the street . Well, i think in the world today, with the heightened level of violence thats taking place, i dont think any community is immune. Certainly we dont anticipate that kind of thing happening here. It was a shock. Certainly a shock to hear the information when i was notified. I mentioned a colleague of our on the bbc in reporting this the United States, just another day of guns, chaos, and panic. This time in the city of San Bernardino. Its unfortunate we have to deal with these things. We always need to be cautious. We certainly need to stay on a high level of alert. At the same time, we dont want to be paralyzed by the incidents. We need to move on. We also need to recognize and be aware that those victims will need some support, ongoing support. We will do all we can to provide the support. As you carefully point out, ongoing investigation, active crime scenes. Mr. Mayor, i appreciate you joining me this morning. Youre welcome. Thank you. Our thoughts with you and your people here. Lets go back to savannah now. Lets turn to sean henry, executive director of the fbi and now the chief Security Officer for crowd strike. Sean, good morning to you. Good morning. This is a perplexing case. Some aspects you might this is, maybe this is a disgruntled worker. Went to the Holiday Party where he works, got mad and left. That strikes it as terrorism. What strikes you . There are more questions than answers. We know it was a Workplace Violence issue, certainly, but what caused that to happen . When you start to look at and assess, is this terrorism or not, you look at, what were the tactics . They used long guns. They had bulletproof vests. They had improvised explosive devices. These are telltale signs. For me, the sign is traveling to saudi arabia. If were thinking its terroristrelated, and theres going to be a lot of investigation done through saudi intelligence, trying to determine what happened there when he traveled, when he met his wife there, and what happens with her family. That jumps out. So does the fact we have two shooters, one male and one female. Thats right. Thats also in many of the shootings that weve seen historically, where weve had cases of Mental Illness in Movie Theaters and schools, typically, youve got one person thats involved. When youve got two people here in a coordinated effort, again, the type of weapons that theyre using, this was very well in. And they leave a baby with his mother, the 6monthold baby. Think they apparently had no plan for escape. I mean on the one hand they get way, but on the other hand, theyre still in the area hours later. What do you make of that . Thats right. They had an opportunity to get away. In the past in some of the situations weve seen internationally, terrorists have stayed on site to fight with police. To continue until theyve what we saw in paris, detonated suicide vests. In this case, Law Enforcement, fbi, joint Terrorism Task force, local police will be scouring through search warrants at the location through vehicles and the exploitation of media because there will be some trail. Urls, web browsing history, email communication, social media, et cetera. This is going to be a longterm investigation here to try to piece this together. A lot of work to be done. Sean henry, thank you very much. Matt, back to you. Savannah, thank you. This mans wife was wounded in the shooting. Good morning. Good morning. How is your wife doing . Shes doing remarkably well. She was shot three times, is that correct . Yes. Once in one arm. Yes. She had shots on this one arm. It went through and out. And one here, and one passed the abdomen, barely didnt go inside. I know there was talk for a few hours yesterday that she might need surgery. Is that now a possibility she wont need that . Possibility she may not need that. Only the bullet fragments are inside her body. What did she tell you . You got to the hospital. You were out of town, flew back in to be by her side at the hospital. When you got there, what did she describe . She was we became very emotional and its like thank god she survived with this kind of situation. My kids, they reunited with her. Still we have a small baby. She hasnt reunited with her yet. Bring her to the hospital. Did she tell you what she saw, what she witnessed inside the center . She couldnt see who was the shooter because everybody ducked down. Bullets were flying all over the place. She was she crawled into the bathroom and realized her hands were bleeding. Is it true that some of your family members were actually watching the coverage of this tragedy on television and saw your wife being treated in the triage . Yes. Actually my son told me that his friend told him that they saw her on television inside the triage, you know, treating. Youve heard what weve heard about the two suspects who are now dead after carrying out this attack. What do you think inspired them . Do you have a gut feeling . I think yeah. I think any killing of any human being should be an act of terrorism. I think we need to control our gun law in our country. Or ideological, youd label it an act of terrorism no matter what. Any killing of human beings should be active terrorism. I appreciate you joining us. My best to your wife. Our thoughts are with her. Thank you. Thank you very much. Lets go back now to savannah in new york. Matt, well check in with you in a bit. Well take a turn and get a check of the weather. Its getting warm here. It is. Savannah is back in new york in studio 1a. Good morning again to you. Good morning, matt. There was initial confusion, but police have revealed that there were two shooters. It was a married couple, 28yearold saeed Rizwan Farook syed was at the Holiday Party, left and came armed. Was this Workplace Violence or terrorism . Left with his coat still hanging over his chair. A guy sitting at the table with him saw him leave. He got up to go to the bathroom and a couple minutes later, felt bullets flying through the walls of the bathroom. It didnt take long for him to return with his wife. At least 14 People Killed. This is the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since sandy hook three years ago. Unfortunately, it is far from the only incident like those weve had to cover in recent months. Church massacre. Nine People Killed when a man opens fire at a charleston church. The rampage that ended with many dead. Killing two, wounding nine others. In memory and grief. Colleagues during a live broadcast. Face of a killer, the gunman who killed nine people at an oregon college. In colorado, a 57yearold man behind bars after a deadly shootout at a planned parenthood clinic. Its just sickening how often weve had to start a show like this. Nbcs tom costello is taking a closer look at the staggering numbers. Tom, sadly, this has become hauntingly familiar. Matt, you know, yesterday was the second mass shooting of the day. There was one yesterday morning in georgia. Four people shot, three wounded and one dead. Consider this, what we saw in San Bernardino is the sixth mass shooting in the u. S. In a week, including the man who killed three week and wounded nine others at a Colorado Springs plan it parentned parenthood. That same day, black friday, evidence that guns are still big sellers. More gun background checks last friday than any other single day 185,000, up 5 from black friday last year. There are roughly 300 million firearms in the u. S. That would mean one for every man, woman and child. Although, of course, tens of millions of americans dont own a gun. The majority of the guns are used legally. In 2015, the u. S. Has already seen more Mass Shootings than days weve had so far in the year. 20 days with four or more Mass Shootings, in which at least four victims were shot. We have a map showing it is a nationwide problem. With 5 of the worlds popular, the u. S. Sees almost 1 3 of all Mass Shootings. 50 times more americans died from gun violence than terrorist attacks since 9 11. The fbi has studied Mass Shootings. 160 of them. Now, San Bernardino is burned into our minds, along with places like virginia tech, columbine columbine, new town, the Washington Navy yard. The list is so long, it goes on i could be reading names and locations probably for at least an hour. Matt . Tom costello on this story from washington for us. Tom, thank you very much. Well, the anticipation was tremendous this morning because we didnt really know what was going to happen. I want respect for my daughters life, and thats what i got today. The conviction of murder. This is the result now of investigation and the justice system. I feel so proud now that shes got some respect. She hasnt lost her life for nothing. Shell be remembered. It looks like Oscar Pistorius as i understand South African law, the typical minimum sentence is 15 years in prison. Is that what he deserves, in your mind . It doesnt really matter the amount of time. Its got nothing to do with me. Wouldnt make any difference to my life. Reeva wont come back. Shes gone now. I dont want revenge against him. But he can pay for his crime. Thats all. Thats all it amounts to. Doesnt matter what the time is, how long it is. Its got nothing to do with the justice. I read that as part of his parole, he was required to reach out to you and your husband and offer a meeting, if you desired it. Did that meeting ever happen . Will it ever happen . Would you want to meet with him . I dont really think its necessary now, but we dont know. That meeting hasnt taken place yet. I cant really say whether it will happen or not. What would you want to say to him, if anything, or hear from him . I think all i would say is, to explain to him what hes taken away from her life, her career, her wedding, her child. Thats what hes taken away. Hes taken away all the joy in my husband and is life. Hes taken away from us, what hes taken away from her. Thats all i would want to say. June steenkamp, thank you so much for being here on this momentum day. I hope that this decision gives you some measure of peace. Our best wishes to you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much. There were cop cars going down the street and Different Army vehicles. At one point, didnt you look out in another direction and see Police Actually apprehend somebody . I did. Few study finds weight gain between pregnancies could raise the risks of stillbirth and infant deaths if subsequent pregnancies. Dr. Natalie is here. Good morning. How do we end up in this study . Its saying weight gait in between pregnancies is the issue . Yeah. Thats kind of what sets this study apart from many other studies. We know from a wealth of leicester, maternal overweight in obesity complicates pregnancies period. Some studies having looed at whether gaining 28 between the first and second pregnancies increase cans risks and stillbirth. Some studies have found that in the past. Not that many studies have looked at infant mortality. Thats what separates this study from ones previously done. Are we talking weighing gain like you cant lose the last ten pounds . Are we talking more weight gain than that . Thats exactly the question we want to talk about. Number they found significant was 4 bmi units, which roughly translates to 2. 8 kilograms which is around 6 pounds. For example hello, i think every woman pregnant says im six pounds more than the first one. The medical stories this week a all important in terms of interpreting them in the context of how they were done statistically. Meaning that if you look at the actual number the absolute risks for the mom, the number was two in a thousand pregnancies resulted in still birth. If you gained weighing between pregnancies. And that increased only to one extra one per thousand pregnancies. So what you are saying is yes, there is an increased risk. Yet, it is exceedingly rare . In there the risk went up 50 t. Absolute rick was one more pregnancy in a thousand. Thats really important. A few other take home points was if you lost weight4between so whats the take home . Its something we have been saying a lot, okay, is that maintaining a healthy weight between pregnancies is important and losing your pregnancy weighing after the first pregnancy is very important in terms of the health of the sec pregnancy and the second baby. But i think most experts who interpret it or looked at these results feel its very important that that number is communicated very carefully. That this is not an astronomical or spectacular risk to women. Its still small. But at a population level that does amount to,ou know, quite a few pregnancies. Its still very important. Another reason to try to keep a healthy weight between pregnancies . Exactly. Its not shocking. Still. Natalie, thank you so much. We will send it over to our other natalie. Thanks, savannah. Thats something about their phycology, their commitment to whatever it was. Too many times we have been on this program, the morning aftete one of these shootings, and expressing grief, sort rerow, outrage. Cbs news spoke with president obama yesterday after this. You could see that same frustration and hear it in his voic may b aware of the facthat we have a noo fly list, whehe people cant get on planes, but those same people who we dont allow to fly could go into a store right now in the United States and buy a firearm. Theres nothing that we cano to stop them. The president went on to say, thoughts and prayers arent enough. Heres the headline of the daily news. A lot of people talking about this. Thoughts and prayers. People saying, god isnt fixing this. Last night, our thougs and prayers are with the folksks in San Bernardino. While the good intentions thoughts and prayers, this isnt fixing the problem. Weeed to do more to do that. Thats the intent of that editorial in the daily news. And other people are echoing that. Were watching morning joe, the program that willie ds on msnbc, and you watch people go to their political corners. Gop candidate Carly Fiorina was on, as well as the speaker of the house paul ryan, both republicans. Both said, there are laws on the books right now that arent being enforced. They believe that the country should focus more on Mental Health issues. Then you see some of the progressive bloggers, democrats on capitol hill, site simcite similar things on common sense gun safety, as they describe it. Theres a clear political divide. You talk a aut Mass Shootings by the numbers. Sat here with the children and families of new town, sandy hook, and said, everything will change. I vividly remember watching nightly news that evening. Brian williams was on and said, will anything change now that we watched children be massacred . Here are the numbers. Mass shootings happen almost each day of the year. 355 shootings versus 336 days of this year. This isshe sixth mass shooting in the u. S. In a week, including yesterday in savannah, georgia, four people were shot. One woman died and we were saying in our meeting, had it not been for the massacre in San Bernardino, many people would never have heard about the shooting in savannah. It came up as part of the conversation by the numbers. Thats how, outsidee of the local market, people even knew that there was another mass shooting in this country. Bbc, the headline from the british broadcast, said, just another day, another shooting in it was after the last mass shooting, the president said, weve all become almost like rote memorization. We have the same reaction. Whether its the thoughts and prayers line. Whether its, how did we get here . Were all journalists, we know that and know our responsibility and every person here takeshat role seriously. Were also human beings and we also live in this country. And are a part of the conversation onhat can happen next that is reasonable. That doesnt make people i live in texas. My dad ill tell you this, when i turned 21 and got my first apartment, my dad gave me a g. I gbew up in a home where guns exist. The home that is m m family home, there is a shooting range thats packed on any given day. My family members, they hunt. Many of them see an assault weapon and say, how can someone own multiple assault weapons . But they are also people who want to own their gun. What is the reasonable y y know though, that this conversation that we continue to have day in and day out, with six shootings th week alone, sadly, doesnt seem like its going to change the course of this country either. What is engainrained now is a sickness. Whats happening around us is a sickness. That said though, i understand people talking about thoughts and prayers not being enough. I do think though at a time where ware all feeling somewhat lost and need someththg, perhaps faith is what people need. The point of that, and i remember there was an interesting some years ago, there was a tornado. The reporter said to the woman, my prayers are with you. She said, i dont believe in god. Not everyone pivots to that. I am a person of faith. We are. Thats our choice. Is faith legislation . There is a separation. Should there be, yes, a faithful conversation with prayer, but there is a legislative cocoersation conversation, that makes us all uncomfortable. My hands are shaking because you know youre likely to Say Something that results inn onslaught of attacks. We live in a free country where People Choose to believe. There are freedoms and the freedomsre preserved by our constitution. Given all of this, there were some peaceful moments last night to mark the events of the day. During the pregame of the pacersclippers game, there was a moment of silence there. As you see, they darkened the court and people just send theirt their thoughts. Obviously, it is the holiday season. Speaker paul ryan pausing during the annual ceremony to light the capital Christmas Tree in washington, d. C. Here in Rockefeller Center, our last night at the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting in new york, there was a beautiful rendidion from the new york kids choir, singing let there be peace on earth. It struck us all to the core. Take a listen. Let there be peace on earth and let it be here with me the new york youth choir. That wasnt supposed to be the way the show would open. Given the events of the day, they felt hearing childrens voices and the innocence was such an important reminder to all of us, that the peace and the innocence of this holiday needs to be preserved. I thought it t s a moving way to open the program last night. To give people, at least for an hour or so, something to celebrate before they gotack into the news.
