Talking. 4 and the biggest news of the night, marco rubio. People are calling it is marco momentum. Matt there is so much suspense about marco rubio and ted cruz. He finished third and within one trump. Of course, ted cruz the winner of the iowa caucus on the vote. You mentioned already Martin Omalley dropping out on. On the republican side, Rick Santorum told the Des Moines Register he will now look at the numbers and evaluate the future of his campaign. Mike huckabee says he has suspended his campaign. Amanda another big talk in the media center, governor branstad telling people not to vote for ted cruz. Whether it was a mistake or not, again, ted cruz the winner tonight and speaking of the Republican Party, the chair is on stage, very loud in here right now. Here in des moines for sure. Matt one thing you will see this year, microsoft increased the speed of reporting. In the past, weve taken two weeks to certify the vote and 48 hours from now, well know who won. It could be a full 48 hours before we declare a winner between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Amanda well see it through to the end. Matt breen and im amanda goodman. Back to you. Ron that democratic race is so close right now, its amazing to watch what happened over the course of this evening. More results in just a moment, but first, we have a big winter storm moving in as well. Lets go pack to the forecast center back to the forecast center right now, storm track 7 chief meteorologist Mark Schnackenberg tracking it all. Mark coming in later tonight, very late tonight, into the Early Morning hours tomorrow. We have a winter storm warning in effect for areas along highway 20 and northward, tomorrow morning through wednesday morning, and a Winter Weather advisory, this purple cedar rapids, over towards tama, same thing, Tuesday Morning into wednesday morning. Snowfall totals by wednesday morning running from roughly just north of dubuque to tama line, well be dealing with five to nine inches of snow, and then it tapers off very quickly as you go a bit farther to the south. Just across dubuque county, go from five to nine to one to three inches of snow, give you an idea of how sharp a grayent on the southern edge that is. Iowa city just a tris to inch of snow. Before we get there, we have pretty thick fog across the entire region. Dense fog advisory in effect until 4 00 in the morning where visibilities less than a quarter mile. The wind starts picking up as we get closer to 6 00 and 7 00, fog no longer a problem. Were dealing with snow becoming a bit more widespread as we towards 7 and 8 00. Well time things out in just a bit. Ron mark, thank you very much. Our continuing caucus night night for iowa caucus goers. Marco rubio, an impressive showing in iowa tonight, coming up just short of the projected winner donald trump who now has finished second, way behind, four points behind ted cruz. Heres nush on this impressive third place finish, almost got second. They told me i needed to wait my turn, that i needed to wait in line. [ cheers and applause ] but tonight, tonight here in iowa, the people of this great state have sent a very clear message. After seven years of barack obama, we are not waiting any longer [ cheers and applause ] Ron Marco Rubio of florida, the impressive win tonight, almost goes past donald trump for second place. Looking at, of course, next week a big, big week for him as rubio moves on to New Hampshire as well. The 2008 iowa caucus winner on the republican side, mike ago, announced that he too will suspend his campaign, dropping out of the race. Its time to officially suspend the campaign, but not because of the votes. Its because of illness. Obviously the voters are sick of me and i need to acknowledge that. Ron well, you have to give him credit. A little bit of humor tonight from the winner of the 2008 Iowa Republican caucus, former governor mike huckabee. And we mentioned this earlier, democratic candidate Martin Omalley also suspending his campaign after failing to really gain much support at all during this campaign despite his appearance on the steele report, the anchor said sarcastically. All right, this is a live look right now, as you can tell who is going to be in the background, it says trust ted, so obviously were waiting right i guess, address the audience because this has been a very, very big night for him. I mean, he has won the Iowa Caucuses despite what governor branstad asked iowa voters to do a few weeks ago, and that was not support ted cruz in these caucuses. The voters said, hey, were going to go with this guy, give him a chance, and he has scored such a decisive and i guess some people call it an upset victory and some people say, hey, they thought he was going to win anyway, but ted cruz, winner of the Iowa Republican caucus. He had about a 5,000vote lead over donald trump with less than one percent of the precincts yet to report. Lets go live right now to kwwl Jerry Gallagher in des moines tonight where we do expect to hear from senator Bernie Sanders here as well sometime tonight, too, because he has had an impressive showing. This is such a close rate here. Jerry absolutely, it is, ron. Word, it is loud, it is raucous, absolutely electric here right now in des moines at this holiday inn where all of these Bernie Sanders supporters have basically durnd this place into a zans haul. Im going to step out of the way and give you a look at all the supporters here. It was really a quiet night up until about an hour ago. As the evening started and the results started coming in, it was secretary clinton with about a five or sixpoint lead, but slowly but surely, sanders started to pick up ground and the loudest roar of the night came when a political analyst said he has a chance, he has a real chance because of the results, the precincts that have not been reported as of yet. As you know, it is too close to call right now. 5050. We are expecting to hear from senator sanders at some point in time. We dont know when. Well let you know when and if we do hear from him as the night listening to a lot of this from a very raucous des moines. We have you covered live here at the holiday inn at this Bernie Sanders event. Im Jerry Gallagher, kwwl news. Ron thats all right, jerry, well come back to you later. What an exciting night to senator sanders this evening. Lets go to the republican side of Black Hawk County, lauren moss covering the democratic side from Cunningham School in waterloo, but lets go to the other side. Lauren, you had a good turnout, the gop was enroute to a record tonight, so what about where you were . Lauren thaers, ron. It was about a record. I would say there was about 130 in the first group, but a second caucus as well, about 120. Hillary clinton won both caucuses by a land side. Lets talk about numbers. The first one, she had 100 supporters while sanders had 33 and in the second one, she had 126 people while sanders wasnt even viable with only 21 supporters. There was skreeping and applause screaming and applause in this gym throughout the night as people changed preference groups. What a process. We were expecting a close call between clinton and sanders omalley only haone supporter out of 133 caucus goers, so that woman was persuaded and she joined clintons joern. It was fascinating to watch this process process. I spoke with a clinton coach, and heres why she says this process works. This gives a person an opportunity to talk to a human right there oneonone, looking in my eye, talk to me, get my feelings from my heart, find out exactly whats going on and like i said, my issues may be their issues. Im not coming from from a candidates perspective, im coming from a voters perspective. Im coming from a person in the neighborhood that wants good my country and for my kids and my grandkids. Lauren as weve been taking, everything came down to voter turnout. The group here at cunningham was mostly older adults. I only saw about a handful of college age caucus goers, if any. Sanders is very popular among young voters, so that could have definitely played a role here tonight, but ron, what a night. This was my first caucus that i got to cover and i have to say, it did not disappoint. It was entertaining, it was fascinating to watch. It was very fun and Energetic Group here, but i do have to say that sanders supporters left pretty disappointed tonight. As weve been taking, its a close call tonight throughout the state of iowa. We have you covered live in waterloo, im lauren moss, kwwl news. Ron im glad you enjoyed yourself because the democratic caucuses are very interesting with all the horse trading. Lets take a look at the screens from Black Hawk County. Ted cruz won here as well although not all the votes are 92 of them are in, 8 to go, but a very close race. Look at this, ted cruz out in front, marco rubio running second, and donald trump running third in Black Hawk County. So a little bit of a surprise there as well. On the democratic side, Bernie Sanders had the lead over Hillary Clinton in this county with the different precinct caucus locations out there, 5446. We have to see how this goes across the state. Bernie sanders at least at this point winning the Black Hawk County results. With that in mind, lets go live to kwwls olivia mancino. She was at Central Middle School tonight reporting on the Black Hawk CountyRepublican Caucus and i know they had a big you had out there because they always do when they hold it at central unless. Olivia they did, i learned that tonight. Central middle school is the largest caucus location in Black Hawk County with 12 precincts reporting there. I spoke to so many people, firsttime caucusers and even people still undecided up to the very last minute. Lets check out the process. This is video of waterloo ward one. Many people voiced their to persuade lastminute caucus goers who got a garden variety of support for trump, cruz, and even fiorina, paul, kasich. I caught up with a firsttime caucus goer to talk to him about his experience. You got hear a lot of different people and these are my neighbors too. These are not just paid spokespersons from wherever. I could have live by one of those people. Olivia now, he says he was a trump supporter and he didnt stick around to see who won the precinct, but trump did not take the victory home tonight, but that gentleman said he enjoyed this process tonight and hes glad he decided to come. I also spoke to a fan on the flip side, hes been to many caucuses and he said he was really pleased with how this one was run. He said it was on organized and it was the best one hes been to and having so many caucus locations played a key role in for now, we have you covered live in the newsroom, olivia mancino, kwwl news. Ron olivia, great job there. This is Benton County, the Republican Caucus out of Benton County. Ted cruz, a pretty big winner tonight at least in these results showing up out of Benton County. Cruz followed by donald trump, marco rubio trailing in that Benton County race. So thats a pretty interesting situation now in benton. The democratic side, they have 84 of their precincts reporting is so close on the democratic side. Clinton and sanders in a slightly ahead. Our kwwl political analyst is the associate professor of Political Science at the university of northern iowa. Dr. Chris larimer joins us with reaction tonight. Chris, lets talk about the big ahead. Dr. Larimer certainly the totals, obviously ted cruz, and thinking about ted cruz in context of whats happened over the last two caucus cycles is quite interesting. We had 2008 with mike huckabee, 2012 with Rick Santorum. Most people say both of them the conservative he haveevangelical candidate winning, and it was interesting who came in third. We talk about marco rubio coming in just stiefr or six points behind ted cruz, but 14 points ahead of ben carson, who is in fourth place. Going forward, there were questions about if another very socially conservative candidate won the Iowa Caucuses in 2016, what does that mean for the future of the caucuses . We had that candidate win tonight in ted cruz, but marco rubio finished a very close third, a surprising third place finish and iowa may not launch the next president in terms of the person who wins the caucuses, but it seems at first glance, the results from tonight are going to launch the campaign for marco rubio and if youre establishment candidates, this is a real blow to your campaign. Chris christie, john case sick, jeb bush, theyre looking to have mom item going into New Hampshire and now it looks like marco rubio is going to have all the, quote, establishment momentum going into New Hampshire and thats going to be tough for those candidates to come back. On the whole, if youre the iowa gop, yes, ted cruz won tonight who may not go on to be the nominee, but launching the campaign of marco rubio may be a boost to the Iowa Caucuses that they didnt see coming. I think its a big win to ted cruz, although after tonight it will be difficult, but certainly for marco rubio, this was a huge night. Ron and chris, you know, reince priebus, the Republican National chairman, has already hinted behind the scenes and in public a couple of times, they would like to take away the power of iowa and the other early states like New Hampshire and South Carolina and nevada, hasnt he . Dr. Larimer he has, but i think tonights results make that more difficult potentially. Nominee, i will obviously point back to what happened tonight as an indication of his support, sort of mom item coming in and a way to get his campaign moving in New Hampshire in a way that make the establishment part of the party very happy. They now have their candidate so to speak Going Forward into nnch. Ron and next week, we dont know how its going to come tonight, looks like mrs. Clinton may hold on for a slightly victory, we dont know yet, but next week, Bernie Sanders is the hometown favorite, or favorite son, going out to New Hampshire which is nearby vermont and i liken that to bob dole winning the Iowa Caucuses years ago when he was from nearby kansas. Dr. Larimer and all clinton was hoping for tonight is a win. If she wins in iowa, she may not win in New Hampshire, but thats okay because of how shes doing in polls in South Carolina and nevada. If she can split the first two states, thats a big win for her moving forward. If Bernie Sanders does not win tonight, even if its a close momentum for the rest of the campaign very difficult. Ron chris larimer, thank you very much. Always enjoy your perspective on this, youre such a good analyst of whats going on. Were expecting to go momentarily here to senator ted cruz, the republican winner tonight of the Iowa Caucuses. Lets just take a look at that live picture, and chris, were expecting to hear from him momentarily, so he gets momentum. The governor basically asked iowans not to support him. What did you think about that . I thought that was unprecedented for the governor because they dont usually take a position anyway, but then asking people not to take his vote for him is something. Disagreed on a number of issues, particularly ethanol, but the fact that governor brad sad was so public about not supporting ted cruz, that he should be defeated, was unprecedented. I thought that was interesting ron that hug from steve king. We had congressman king on the steele report last week with heidi cruz. These are the key people in iowa who helped him win this tonight. Dr. Larimer and former secretary of state ted schultz. I talked a lot about turnout and turnout was way up, it would be to the detriment of cruz and sanders, but they did get close to over 160,000, it sounds like, but it must have been cruzs organization and also part of rusho, so Organization Still matters in iowa. Personal contact Still Matters in iowa and thats important for the iowa gop. Ron they said they had many, many people manning the phones, particularly here on caucus day. They had a good ground game on. The family leader itself, a very conservative organization in iowa, did not support anyone, but Bob Vander Platts did come out individually and supported the candidacy of ted cruz. Right now. He has a big crowd there, he gives a hug to his wife heidi, Vander Platts on the left, steve king on the right, an embrace with his wife. They know this is a big win tonight and its on to New Hampshire after iowa. This is the winner of the Iowa Caucuses, ted cruz. [ cheers and applause ] god bless the great state of iowa [ cheers and applause ] [ cheers and applause ] tonight is a victory for the grassroots. [ cheers and applause ] tonight is a victory for courageous conservative across iowa and all across this great nation [ cheers and applause ] [ cheers and applaus] iowa has sent notice that the republican nominee and the next president of the United States will not be chosen by the media. And tonight is a testament to the peoples commitments to their yearnings to get back to our core commitment, free market principles, constitutional liberties, and the judeochristian values that built this great nation. [ applause ] when the washington lobbyists settled on other candidates in this race, when the media in one voice said a conservative cannot win, nationwide, over 800,000 cruz. Org as courageous conservatives said yes, we can. [ applause ] 800,000 contributions at ted cruz. Org with an average contribution of 67. That is the power of the grassroots [ cheers and applause ] but srean the state of iowa. [ cheers and applause ] its over 200 ron well, 12,000 volunteers, hearse ted cruz say right there, a heard ted cruz say right there alone in the state of the final numbers of n he had 50,684 votes tonight. Lets go break away for a moment and go to the forecast center. Or mrs. Clinton . Lets go to the storm center okay, were going to stick with mrs. Clinton. Secretary clinton is about to speak. She has widened her lead slightly. The last time i saw, it was very close, within about. 5 of a . Were going to know in just a little bit how she came out. Do you have any update on that . Dr. Larimer no, not yet. Im still checking on that. Ron im on the secretary of States Office realtime lets go to Hillary Clinton now with bill clinton at her side and chelsea, see what she has to say about her apparent victory tonight. We have a major storm coming in and well hear Hillary Clinton momentarily as soon as we get our audio problem corrected. Whats ahead with this big storm . Mark we have to deal with the fog and then the snow moves in tomorrow morning. We have the winter storm warning in effect along and north of highway 20. This runs from Tuesday Morning to wednesday morning and travel plans farther to the west, probably not want to do that. Thats a blizzard warning in effect during the day tomorrow. Dubuque to tama northward, five to nine inches, but not too far away, south of dubuque, only one to three inches. That extends to the southern part of Johnson County excuse and in johnson trace to an inch of snow expected. As for where the precip is right now, this is aloft and not reaching the ground yet. Storm track 7 live Doppler Radar south and west. Rain and snow in parts of southwestern iowa. The low right now located right there. The track will take it across southeast iowa and in advance of that, it will bring in warm air as well as asl as dry air and that shuts off some of the rain and snow for just a little bit. Well have more in a bit going back to ron. Ron thank you very much. We have our audio connected to mrs. Clinton now. A very close race. I am honored to stand in the long line of american reformers who make up our minds that the status quo is not good enough, that standing still is not an option, and that brings people together to find ways forward i look back over the years of my involvement from that very first job i had at the Childrens Defense Fund and i know [ cheers and applause ] i know what were capable of doing. I know that we may have differences of opinion about how best to achieve our goals, but i believe we have a very clear idea that the Democratic Party and this Campaign Stands for have to be united [ cheers and applause ] [ cheers and applause ] when it is all said and done, we have to be united against a republican vision and candidates who would drive us apart and divide us. That is not who we are, my friends. I followed their campaign very closely. I understand what theyre appealing to and i intend to stand against it. I will not [ cheers and applause ] i will not let their divisiveness, their efforts to rip away the progress that weve made, be successful because we cant afford that.
